USDA Suspends Mexican Avocado Imports

by Zero Hedge

The U.S. suspended all imports of Mexican avocados that could send prices to near-record highs in the coming weeks on diminishing supplies if the ban remains in place.

The reason for the import halt is a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspector was threatened by what is presumed to be drug cartel members.

“U.S. health authorities…made the decision after one of their officials, who was carrying out inspections in Uruapan, Michoacan, received a threatening message on his official cellphone,” Mexico’s Agriculture Department said in a statement. –AP News

The surprise halt comes as the price of a 20-pound box of avocados from the state of Michoacan, Mexico (the central hub of Mexican avocado production) is approximately $26.89, the highest ever for this time of year with data going back to 1998.

This year alone, avocado prices are up 31%. The import ban came on the eve of the Super Bowl and may send spot prices to record highs on the prospects of tighter supplies.

Supply woes aren’t expected to affect Super Bowl consumption since those avocados had already been shipped, but there are concerns disruptions could be seen in the weeks ahead (if the import ban remains in place).

The ban also comes as the Avocados From Mexico association unveiled its Super Bowl ad that will be shown during the game.

Violence against USDA inspectors is nothing new since the Michoacan state is known for cartel turf wars. In 2019, a team of inspectors was threatened by a cartel.

Zero Hedge responds

Now We've Done It: We Pissed Off The CIA

While the collapse of public trust in the mainstream media is nothing new, with Forbes recently reporting that "Fewer Americans than ever before trust the mainstream media", it is only a much more recent phenomenon that members of the media's highest echelons - such as the NYT's Matthew Rosenberg - have started asking themselves and their (few remaining) readers the much more difficult question of why is public trust of media so low.

Joe Rogan is what he is. We in the media might want to spend more time thinking about why so many people trust him instead of us.

— Matthew Rosenberg (@AllMattNYT) January 30, 2022

Unfortunately, instead of following up with some much needed top-to-bottom cleansing and fundamental reassessment of how the MSM pursues, analyzes and reports news, the media has simply fallen back to its traditional tactic of spewing baseless hit pieces against outlets they would rather see silenced and/or censored.

Most notably in recent weeks, this has been observed vis-a-vis Joe Rogan's incredibly popular podcast which has emerged as one of the biggest competitors to traditional media.

This morning, it is Zero Hedge that has again been singled out for pursuing non-establishment groupthink.

Echoing a false allegation we have repeatedly heard before, early on Tuesday the Associated Press (of "how Associated Press cooperated with the Nazis" fame) writes that "U.S. intelligence officials on Tuesday accused a conservative financial news website with a significant American readership of amplifying Kremlin propaganda and alleged five media outlets targeting Ukrainians have taken direction from Russian spies. The officials said Zero Hedge, which has 1.2 million Twitter followers, published articles created by Moscow-controlled media that were then shared by outlets and people unaware of their nexus to Russian intelligence."

Well, now we've done it - we've angered the CIA, and for what? For publishing views that challenge the conventional narrative, such as disputing that an invasion of Ukraine is actually "imminent" as the US State Department and its mainstream media conduits repeat day after day, or that the Covid virus was actually created in a Chinese lab, a view which has gained substantial prominence in recent months after it emerged that none other than the UK's Jeremy Farrar (also known as the UK's Doctor Fauci) played a pivotal role in stifling suggestions that this new virus might have come from a laboratory rather than emerged through natural zoonotic transmission from animals.

Of course, there is no actual accusation that Zero Hedge works directly with anyone tied to Russia or its intelligence apparatus - as the AP admits "officials did not say whether they thought Zero Hedge knew of any links to spy agencies and did not allege direct links between the website and Russia", which is correct because - and we will repeat this once again for the record and for all future similar hit piece attempts to smear us - this website has never worked, collaborated or cooperated with Russia, nor are there any links to spy (or any other) agencies; instead all the AP notes, citing some unnamed "intelligence official", is that the US intelligence apparatus is unhappy that among our hundreds of guest publishing contributors is a website called Strategic Culture Foundation which US intel officials "allege" take direction from the SVR, the Russian foreign intelligence service.

Ontario still plans to roll out Digital ID, even after scrapping vaccine passports

TORONTO (LifeSiteNews) — The province of Ontario is still gearing up to launch a robust Digital ID system in “the coming months,” even after Premier Doug Ford announced that he will be axing the QR-code vaccine passport system.

The official Ontario government’s website still boasts about the upcoming arrival of the “voluntary” Digital identification system being launched in the province.

“Digital ID (identification) is an electronic version of trusted government ID that provides better safety, more security and stronger privacy than physical ID cards or documents,” reads the Ontario website, notifying residents the system will be unveiled in the coming months. “It can be securely stored in a digital wallet app for smartphones and other digital devices (like tablets or computers) and will let people and businesses prove who they are both online and in person.”

Calling the upcoming “digital ID” system “the foundation” that will “enable easier access to online services and make Ontario one of the world’s most digitally advanced jurisdictions,” the government states that this new system will allow more “businesses that require customer identification” to “move their services online,” furthering society’s transition from real life into the centralized digital realm.

According to Ontario, “The pandemic has also taught us that contactless in-person service options (such as tap-to-pay instead of entering a PIN on a terminal) can help keep us safe,” while mentioning that the system will also be used to “open a bank account” and “access and use vaccination records.”

The digital ID is part of the province’s larger goal of “Building a Digital Ontario,” which seeks to create “a world-leading digital economy that puts people first and delivers a more prosperous future for everyone.”

“The COVID-19 pandemic has made our province’s ability to harness technology more urgent than ever,” explains the government on the “Building a Digital Ontario” webpage. “With the people of Ontario increasingly using online services, for example to renew driver’s licences and health cards, strong digital security and robust data management must be crucial priorities — for individuals, communities, businesses, and government.”
