USDA Suspends Mexican Avocado Imports

by Zero Hedge

The U.S. suspended all imports of Mexican avocados that could send prices to near-record highs in the coming weeks on diminishing supplies if the ban remains in place.

The reason for the import halt is a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspector was threatened by what is presumed to be drug cartel members.

“U.S. health authorities…made the decision after one of their officials, who was carrying out inspections in Uruapan, Michoacan, received a threatening message on his official cellphone,” Mexico’s Agriculture Department said in a statement. –AP News

The surprise halt comes as the price of a 20-pound box of avocados from the state of Michoacan, Mexico (the central hub of Mexican avocado production) is approximately $26.89, the highest ever for this time of year with data going back to 1998.

This year alone, avocado prices are up 31%. The import ban came on the eve of the Super Bowl and may send spot prices to record highs on the prospects of tighter supplies.

Supply woes aren’t expected to affect Super Bowl consumption since those avocados had already been shipped, but there are concerns disruptions could be seen in the weeks ahead (if the import ban remains in place).

The ban also comes as the Avocados From Mexico association unveiled its Super Bowl ad that will be shown during the game.

Violence against USDA inspectors is nothing new since the Michoacan state is known for cartel turf wars. In 2019, a team of inspectors was threatened by a cartel.

Hillary Clinton Silent When Asked About Spying Accusations

Hillary Clinton on Tuesday ignored questions about whether her campaign spied on then-candidate Donald Trump, the Daily Mail reported.

A Friday court filing by special counsel John Durham accused an unnamed "tech executive" of exploiting his access to nonpublic internet information and instructing "researchers to mine internet data to establish 'an inference' and 'narrative' tying then-candidate Trump to Russia" in an effort to "please certain 'VIPs,'" including people in the Clinton campaign.

As she arrived at daughter Chelsea's Manhattan apartment mid-morning, a Daily Mail reporter asked Clinton whether the former secretary of state paid to have Trump's campaign spied on.

A masked Clinton, wearing a blue coat and black pants, remained silent and waved hello with her left hand while entering the building.

The Daily Mail reported that later, Clinton and her daughter left the building. They went to a restaurant in Queens, where a film crew was seen setting up inside the establishment.

The former first lady is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at Thursday's New York state Democratic convention.

Durham's court filing accused Michael Sussmann, a lawyer for the Clinton campaign, of sharing data with a federal agency allegedly showing the use of Russian-made phones near the White House in 2017.

The filing also accused attorney Sussmann of lying to the FBI in September 2016, when he said he was not working "for any client" while presenting the agency with purported evidence of covert communications between the Trump Organization and a Russian bank.

Besides the news surrounding Durham's filing, Clinton also is under the microscope for a past tweet in which she shared a statement from Jake Sullivan, President Joe Biden's national security adviser who was a top foreign policy adviser on her campaign.

"This could be the most direct link yet between Trump and Moscow," Sullivan said on Oct. 31, 2016, just days before the presidential election. "Computer scientists have apparently uncovered a covert server linking the Trump Organization to a Russian-based bank.

"This secret hotline may be the key to unlocking the mystery of Trump's ties to Russia."

Durham's probe has discredited the Steele dossier, which served as a basis for Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrants against Trump campaign aide Carter Page.

Republican lawmakers now are questioning whether Sullivan knowingly promoted faulty information while hiding Clinton's link to it, the Daily Mail said.

GOP Senators Call For An End To COVID-19 State Of Emergency

GOP lawmakers are stressing it’s time to move on from the COVID-19 pandemic. On Monday, a handful of senators, including Mike Lee (R-Utah), Roger Marshall (R-Kansas), Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.), sent a letter to their colleagues urging them to not help Democrats push a continuing resolution to fund the federal government unless Democrats defund vaccine mandates.

The lawmakers pointed out these mandates pose tremendous social and economic costs on American families. They decried such actions as unconstitutional, unlawful and an abuse of federal power. The GOP senators added, while Joe Biden has not sought the enforcement of vaccine mandates since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down OSHA’s mandate on federal workers, he could push another mandate in the future.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) echoed these calls while claiming the Biden administration has forgone scientific evidence to promote a restrictive agenda.

“They’ve got the list of boxes they have to check off,” she explained. “We’ve killed the Keystone pipeline. We’ve got mandates. We’ve got people in masks. We’ve got people in lockdowns. They’re going to lose their job if they don’t go get a jab. They’ve got an agenda. For all of this bluster about fundamentally transforming our way of life, all Joe Biden has managed to do is to alienate his fellow countrymen.”

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) claimed he and most of Americans believe it’s time to return to normal, adding COVID-19 is here to stay. The Kentucky lawmaker decried Democrats who support forcing children to mask up at schools while rich celebrities watched the Super Bowl “without a mask in sight.” McConnell also said it’s absolute bonkers for Democrats to push for zero-COVID while asserting that there’s no reasonable health expert who says that’s possible.

However, the Republican senator commended several Democrat leaders for announcing a rollback on their vaccine and mask mandates as several cities and states, including California, Connecticut, D.C. and New Jersey, plan to return to normal. McConnell believes this all has nothing to do with the actual science.

“The only science that’s changed in the last two weeks is the political science,” he stated. “The only data that has changed in the last two weeks is Democrats’ polling data. The Washington Post put it like this, ‘the abrupt end to mask mandates reflects a shifting political landscape.’ While Democratic leaders are stampeding to finally follow the science and end burdensome mandates on adults, in many places America’s children are still being left behind.”

In the meantime, Sen. Marshall plans to introduce a bill to end the federal state of emergency. The law would strip away many federal powers to respond to national emergencies under the National Emergency Act, which was invoked by 45th President Donald Trump and then Biden to tackle COVID. Biden extended the emergency order to March 1 and lawmakers are debating whether to further extend the order or return to normal.

Well, now we've done it - we've angered the CIA, and for what? The smallpox pandemic response was eerily similar to COVID

In late Dec 2019, I predicted almost everything that has happened so far with COVID-19, which put me at odds with most of my physician colleagues. I was able to do so because I was familiar with history and saw many the signs our past mistakes would repeat themselves (for example, The Real Anthony Fauci details how the HIV epidemic was a blueprint for the management of COVID).

What is occurring now in Canada and other places is almost identical to what happened with the smallpox vaccination campaigns over a century ago, and I believe it is critical we understand these lessons from the past and it is vital this message gets out to the Truckers. Briefly, the original smallpox vaccine was an unusually harmful vaccination that was never tested before being adopted. It increased, rather than decreased smallpox outbreaks. As the danger and inefficacy became known, increasing public protest developed towards vaccination. Yet, as smallpox increased, governments around the world instead adopted more draconian mandatory vaccination policies. Eventually, one of the largest protests of the century occurred in 1885 in Leicester (an English city). Leicester‘s government was replaced, mandatory vaccination abolished, and public health measures rejected by the medical community were implemented. These measures were highly successful, and once adopted globally ended the smallpox epidemic, something most erroneously believe arose from vaccination.
