NFL hires former AG Loretta Lynch for racial bias lawsuit: Report

Lynch, the first black woman to be confirmed as attorney general, is now representing the NFL.

The National Football League reportedly has hired former Obama Attorney General Loretta Lynch for its defense in a racial discrimination lawsuit filed earlier this month by Brian Flores, former Miami head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

Flores' lawsuit against the NFL and three of its teams seeks "to shine a light on the racial injustices that take place inside the NFL and to effectuate real change for the future."

Lynch, the first black woman to be confirmed as attorney general, is now a partner at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. Four sources told Bloomberg on Wednesday that she is working on the lawsuit with the firm's chairman Brad Karp.

Flores, who is black and Hispanic, has not been picked to be head coach in several NFL openings after he was fired fired by the Dolphins in January.

The NFL released a statement on Flores' lawsuit the day it was filed.

"Diversity is core to everything we do, and there are few issues on which our clubs and our internal leadership team spend more time," the NFL stated. "We will defend against these claims, which are without merit."

US general issues China warning

The concerns come as Beijing backs Moscow in its row with NATO

With the West’s attention still locked on the tense standoff on the Russian-Ukrainian border, China could seize the opportunity to take action in the Asia-Pacific and test the waters to see how committed Washington is to its partners in the region, a senior American general has cautioned.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Singapore Airshow on Wednesday,General Kenneth Wilsbach, the head of the US Pacific Air Forces, weighed in on Beijing’s position in the worsening row between the two eastern European nations.

“From the standpoint of will China see what’s happening in Europe and… try to do something here in the Indo-Pacific – absolutely yes, that’s a concern,” he said, claiming that the Asian nation “would want to take advantage.”

“It won’t be surprising if they tried something that may be provocative, and see how the international community reacts,” Wilsbach added.

According to the general, Beijing views crises based on whether “this is an opportunity for gain.”

His remarks come amid months of speculation over the impasse between East and West, with Washington and several of its allies in Europe repeatedly sounding the alarm that Moscow’s armed forces could soon order an invasion into Ukraine. On Tuesday, Moscow’s Ministry of Defense announced that its troops had completed their training drills in Belarus and would begin the process of returning to their permanent bases.

The Kremlin, however, has consistently rejected that it has any intentions of striking its neighbor and has looked to gain security guarantees which would rule out NATO’s enlargement closer to Russia’s borders, a move for which Beijing has expressed its support.

Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping released a joint declaration opposing “the further expansion of NATO,” and also called “for the North Atlantic Alliance to refrain from ideological approaches from the time of the Cold War.”

Washington has long accused Beijing of staging provocations against Taiwan, which it views as an inalienable part of its territory. In early December, US Assistant Defense Secretary for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs Ely Ratner accused China’s army of “likely preparing for a contingency to unify” the island with the mainland. China has often condemned the US’ close ties with Taipei as interference in its internal affairs.

How Nazi war criminals found safe haven

After WWII was over, Tokyo decided to prosecute wartime elites, but never really went through with it

In Tokyo or any other big city in Japan, there is always a store selling military uniforms and paraphernalia – both authentic and replica – belonging to a variety of armies. The most popular among them are the modern American military uniform and, as strange as it may seem, the old German one circa the Third Reich’s Wehrmacht and SS days. Occasionally you might see people dressed in Nazi uniforms and sporting Totenkopf caps and red swastika armbands in the streets. Usually it’s someone going to a cosplay party, but mostly people buy these uniforms to add to their private collections or to wear at home or in theme clubs. There is no aversion to Nazi symbols here: unlike Germany, Japan never went through denazification and simply has no idea what it is. And the way many Japanese see the outcome of WWII is also not quite what other countries might expect.

Family Business

In early 2021, Shinzo Abe, who until recently served as prime minister of Japan, said that the country needs to establish an intelligence agency – the kind of statement he had refrained from in his official capacity.

It came as a bit of a surprise, but not really, as Abe has always been considered hawkish in his policies. Under his rule as the longest-serving prime minister, Japan had done plenty to stealthily revive its military sovereignty, shattered by the pacifist Article 9 of the 1947 Japanese Constitution and the 1960 Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan that stipulated that Japan didn’t really need an army. So Abe’s new suggestion is just a follow-up to the Act on the Protection of Specially Designated Secrets (SDS) that Japan adopted while he was in power.

Japan’s growing military budget (whose very existence would baffle many around the world), swift revamping of its army that technically doesn’t exist, as well as the willingness to dispense with the US defense ‘umbrella’ and create its own nuclear bomb, are all topics for a long conversation that Japanese traditionalists are not very keen to discuss. So let’s talk about the traditions first.

Shinzo Abe comes from a political dynasty. His father, Shintaro Abe, was a leading member of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has been in power for over 50 years. He served as the country’s foreign minister and married the daughter of prime minister Nobusuke Kishi in 1951. Shinzo Abe’s younger brother, Nobuo Kishi, took their mother’s family name to avoid allegations of nepotism. In 2020, Kishi became the defense minister of Japan.
