Angela Merkel_Romania and Bulgaria must belong to Europe_2005-06-02
Hello Anya,
It's me again. I did well at my exam and the next one is thursday. How are
you? How is your car ? I hope both well.
Markus Ferber, leader of the German Christian-Democrats in the Parliament
of Europe, stated that the French no vote to the European Constitution
might prevent Romania's accession to the European Union. In an interview
to BBC Markus Ferber opined that for the time being neither Romania nor
Bulgaria was ready for accession, although it was very clear that the two
states belonged to Europe. Ferber announced he would ask that the European
Union enlargement should stop, as well as the ratification of accession
treaties with Romania and Bulgaria.
The German MEP also said that unless there was a European Constitution
adopted by 2007, the EU enlargement would become pointless. He was asked
if German politicians would speculate on the accession of Romania and
Bulgaria as election campaign issues for legislative elections likely to
take place in autumn. Ferber answered that Turkey was sure to be one such
issue, but not Bulgaria and Romania.
Markus Ferber mentioned: "Both Mrs. Angela Merkel, our candidate for
Chancellor of Germany and my party (the Christian-Democrat Union) believe
that Romania and Bulgaria must belong to Europe. But this is not the case
of Turkey, which belongs neither to Europe nor to the European Union. This
is why Turkey is election campaign issue, unlike Romania or Bulgaria."
The Turkish think their country stands no chances to join the EU if the
German Christian-Democrat Union led by Angela Merkel wins legislative
elections in Germany, says Rompres. "We will never stand one chance with
Merkel. But with Schroeder there are 100% chances" says Uezeyis, member of
the Turkish community in Berlin. Like many other Turks, he is dissatisfied
that Merkel will introduce herself as the conservatory candidate for
autumn elections. Angela Merkel outscored Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in
opinion polls and she is an unrelenting opponent to Turkey's EU accession.
Kenan Kolat, vice president of the Turkish community in Germany opined: "
We are worried because the Christian-Democrat Union might prevent Turkey's
accession to the EU". Turkey's hope to join the EU was dashed in the last
two days: Merkel was nominated and the French said no to the European
Constitution. While Schroeder and French president Jacques Chirac pleaded
for starting negotiations with Turkey in October, Merkel went to Ankara to
plead for the idea of "a privileged partnership". According to Kolat,
although in Germany there live about 1,6 million Turks whose age is fit
for participation, to vote, only 700,000 of them have the right to vote
and usually support Schroeder's Social Democrats.
Talk with you soon,
Paula Nistor

Bush is impressed with Basescu's anti-corruption campaign 2005-03-11
The US leader was happy to recollect "the most wonderful moment" in his career as president: the mystical experience of the Bucharest rainbow ."Romania is special ally because we share the same values such as transparency, the state of law and anticorruption" .
