'Like a war zone' Panic in Germany as apartment block destroyed by massive fire
The fire broke out at a building in Essen in western Germany on Sunday night home to around 100 people. Essen fire brigade said they had “definitely” not experienced a fire of that magnitude before.
Strong winds caused by Storm Antonia which battered the country over the weekend reportedly whipped up the flames, engulfing all 50 flats housed in the apartment block.
180 people from the building and nearby area were taken to safety and three people were taken to hospital.
So far no one has died and no one has been reported missing.
The alarm was sounded at 2.15am and around 150 emergency services personnel were called to the scene.
The houses were evacuated and residents were accommodated in a nearby university lecture hall.
Hospitals in the area were put on alert in case there were a high number of casualties however the fire brigade said it was a miracle that more people were not injured.
