I was having a spirited debate with my sister about the Deepwater Horizon spill after it was mentioned on the TOOB.

I told her the companies responsible for the cleanup happened to be bought out by the same crooks responsible for the spill just weeks before the catastrophe.

I just spent the past 30 minutes trying to find any articles about that to no avail. They have magically, disappeared. Results for it are all now "authoritative sources".

Any anons have some links to facts about how fucked up that entire "accident" was I can arm myself with the next time I am over at her house?

There was heaps of info on this back when it was going down. They tried really hard to stop the info about what was happening..

They didn't clean it up, they just sprayed chemicals onto the oil and let it sink to the bottom of the gulfโ€ฆ Now that oil is on the bottom of the gulf and destroying the whole ecosystem down there..

But these people love the planet right??

I member that BP knew that it would blow and drilled WAY too deep. BP brought an oil cleanup company (same one used in the first gulf war) to disperse the chemicals onto the slicks.

They stopped ALL media coverage and only let out "their" narritive. Censorship was happening back then, and most normies were saying how well BP did to clean it all up.

I have only used BP 2-3 times since that happened (only when on road trips and I need gas.)

Vindicated! State Dept. email showing $7 million bribe was withheld from Trumpโ€™s impeachment defense team

The Epoch Times is reporting that according to a 2016 State Department email, the US government received information from a source in Ukraine which said that Burisma, the Ukrainian-based energy firm that gave Hunter Biden a sweet position on its board, allegedly paid a $7 million bribe to the Ukrainian prosecutorโ€™s office.

 

George Kent, an official within the State Department was called to testify at the 2020 impeachment trial of former President Trump, however never mentioned or disclosed the information from that 2016 email.

 

The email was mentioned in a Sept 18, 2020, Senate Homeland Security report, however, wasnโ€™t publicly released until earlier this month. It states that Kent, then the deputy chief of mission in Kyiv, Ukraine, was advised by Ukraineโ€™s deputy general prosecutor that Burisma paid a $7 million bribe to put an end to a 2014 corruption investigation into the company.

 

Kentโ€™s email, the Times reported, was also addressed to Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Jorgan Andrews, and warned that Hunter Bidenโ€™s role at Bursima, which was during the time when Joe Biden was Obamaโ€™s vice president, was undermining US government endeavors to get a handle on corruption in the easter European nation.

 

Kent wrote, โ€œHunterโ€™s presence on the Burisma board undercut the anti-corruption messageโ€ emanating from Washington, DC. Kent also noted that โ€œUkrainians heard one message from us,โ€ however saw the Biden familyโ€™s โ€œassociation with a known corrupt figure whose company was known for not playing by the rules.โ€

 

All of this came about starting in 2014, when Victoria Nuland, then the assistant secretary for European and Eurasian affairs under Obamaโ€™s State Department spoke with then U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt, a conversation which was intercepted and leaked to the BBC.

 

During that call, Nuland, now Bidenโ€™s undersecretary of state for political affairs, and Pyatt seemed to be discussing the ouster of then-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and the installation of opposition leader Arseniy Yatsenyuk as prime minister.

 

During that conversation, Nuland said that Jake Sullivan, then serving as Bidenโ€™s national security adviser (a role which he now holds in the Biden administration) told her โ€œYou need Biden,โ€ whereby she concluded telling Pyatt that โ€œBidenโ€™s willing.โ€

 

Biden ended up being appointed by Obama as his โ€œpoint manโ€ on Ukraine in February 2014.

That same month, on Feb. 22, 2014, Yanukovych was removed as president of Ukraine, while three days later, the candidate favored by Nulandโ€”Yatsenyukโ€”was installed as Ukraineโ€™s prime minister.

 

The Bidenโ€™s involvement with Burisma is believed to have begun on April 16, 2014, when Joe Biden mete Hunter Bidenโ€™s business partner, Devon Archer, at the White House.

 

While it isnโ€™t known what was discussed at that meeting, Joe Biden traveled to Ukraine on April 21, 2014, to offer not only political support but to open Americaโ€™s wallet to the tune of $50 million in aid to the new government. After Bidenโ€™s visit, Petro Poroshenko, a billionaire politician, was elected president of Ukraine on May 25, 2014.

 

Biden developed a close relationship with both men, and later helped Ukraine secure a four-year $17.5 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) package in March 2015.

 

It was during Bidenโ€™s Ukraine visit in April 2014 when Archer joined Burismaโ€™s board. Later that month, Hunter Biden was also added to the board, however for unknown reasons, his appointment wasnโ€™t announced until the middle of May, 2014.

 

At the same time, Burisma announced Hunter Biden had been appointed as head of the companyโ€™s legal unit, an announcement which has since been scrubbed from the companyโ€™s website. The $7 million bribe was allegedly paid while Hunter Biden was in charge of Burismaโ€™s legal affairs.

 

In a strange case of โ€œcoincidence,โ€ Hunter Bidenโ€™s appointment to the board came as Burisma came under investigation by the Ukrainian Prosecutor Generalโ€™s Office.

 

The probe came about because Burismaโ€™s owner, Nikolai Zlochevsky, the countryโ€™s former minister of ecology, had been able to obtain what was described as an โ€œunusually largeโ€ number of permits to extract oil and gas, โ€œmany of which he appeared to have received during his time as minister.โ€

 

The investigation opened in April 2014, when the Prosecutor Generalโ€™s office began investigating Burisma after British authorities had frozen $23.5 million in assets belonging to Zlochevsky as part of an investigation into money laundering. This is when Archer and Hunter Biden suddenly found themselves appointed to Burismaโ€™s board. Irony? Or merely โ€œimpeccable timing?โ€

 

Kentโ€™s email noted that after the $7 million bribe was paid, Ukraineโ€™s chief prosecutor, Vitaly Yarema issued a letter to the London court in December 2014 which stated that โ€œthere was no active case open on Zlochevsky.โ€ The frozen assets were then released to him.

 

Yarema resigned on Feb 9, 2015, after pressure came to bear over his failure to prosecute any officials in the former Yanukovych administration.

 

The new prosecutor named was Viktor Shokin, who was brought out of retirement by Poroshenko. A former prosecutor, he was appointed the day after Yaremaโ€™s resignation, which met at least initially with approval by American officials.

In June 2015, Nuland wrote Shokin telling him that โ€œ[w]e have been impressed with the ambitious reform and anti-corruption agenda of your government.โ€ That letter was delivered by Pyatt to Shokin on orders from Nuland.

 

Nuland further praised Shokin, noting that his ongoing reforms showed his ability to โ€œinvestigate and prosecute corruption and other crimes in an effective, fair and transparent manner.โ€

 

Pyatt continued the Shokin praise-fest, saying in a September 2015 speech that โ€œ[w]e want to work with Prosecutor General Shokinโ€ because he was โ€œleading the fight against corruptionโ€ in Ukraine.

 

He also gushed that the $23 million in frozen Burisma assets, returned to the companyโ€™s owner Zlochevsky through the actions of Shokinโ€™s predecessor were โ€œillicitโ€ and โ€œbelonged to the Ukrainian people.โ€

 

The love-fest with Shokin continued through October 2015, when Pyatt tweeted about overcoming corruption in Ukraine in collaboration with Shokin.

 

The honeymoon started to come crashing down not long after Hunter Biden received an email from the head of Burismaโ€™s board, Vadym Pozharskyi on Nov. 2, 2015. In that email, Pozharskyi demanded Hunter Biden produce what he called โ€œdeliverables,โ€ stating that the โ€œultimate purposeโ€ was to โ€œclose down any cases or pursuitsโ€ against Burismaโ€™s owner in Ukraine.

 

Quite โ€œironically,โ€ Pozharskyi had visited with Joe Biden in Washington, DC earlier that year.

 

The object of Pozharskyiโ€™s wrath appeared to be Shokin, who reopened the investigation into Zlochevsky, which had been sidelined by Yarema. In addition, Shokin attempted (albeit unsuccessfully) to obtain a court order from Ukrainian courts to seize Zlochevskyโ€™s assets, which were eventually seized on Feb. 2, 2016.

 

The Epoch Times further noted that on the same day Hunter Biden received Pozharskyiโ€™s email, Hunter contacted Amos Hochstein, Obamaโ€™s special envoy and coordinator of international energy affairs.

 

Four days later, on Nov. 6, Hunter met with Hochstein, which occurred within mere hours of receiving Pozharskyiโ€™s dictates, which is striking. Congressional investigators later learned from Hochstein that Hunter โ€œwanted to know my views on Burisma and Zlochevsky.โ€

 

All of this occurred right around the time that Joe Biden was going to be making a trip to Ukraine. Nuland told congressional investigators that Hochstein had expressed anxiety over Hunter Bidenโ€™s ties to Burisma specifically to Joe Biden during the flight to Ukraine on Dec. 7, 2015.

ON Nov. 22, 2015, Joe Biden demanded the removal of Shokin as prosecutor investigating Burisma. This occurred only two weeks before his trip to Ukraine, and just three weeks after Hunter was given his instructions that the cases against Zlochevsky needed to basically go away.

 

Despite Bidenโ€™s demands that Shokin be fired, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko initially pushed back against the directive, and the prosecutor was not fired during Bidenโ€™s December 2015 visit.

 

However just weeks later, on Jan. 21, 2016, Joe Biden again met with Poroshenko in Washington. A readout of the meeting shows the two discussed โ€˜the need to continue to move forward on Ukraineโ€™s anti-corruption agenda.โ€

 

Biden achieved his goal in March 2016 when Shokin was fired, however only after he was able to hold U.S. taxpayer loans over Poroshenkoโ€™s head in exchange for firing him.

 

Most people have by now seen the viral video of Joe Biden speaking at a Council of Foreign Relations conference on Jan. 23, 2018. Now as most people who have followed Joe Biden know, he is a human gaffe machine and has little self-control over what comes out of his mouth. Remember Corn Pop?

 

Anyway, during that interview with The Atlantic, Biden was recalling his conversation with the Ukrainian president:

 

โ€œPetro, youโ€™re not getting your billion dollars. Itโ€™s OK, you can keep the [prosecutor] general. Just understandโ€”weโ€™re not paying if you do.โ€

 

Just months after Shokin was kicked to the curb, Blue Star Strategies, a Washington, D.C.-based political consultancy firm approached his interim successor, Yuriy Sevruk.

 

Blue Star is headed by Bill Clintonโ€™s deputy chief of staff, Karen Tramontano. Pushed by Hunter Biden, Burisma hired Blue Star in November 2015, just after he was told to shut down the cases against Zlochevsky.

 

As if the web isnโ€™t tangled enough, it gets worse. Blue Star joined up with John Buretta, a former senior Obama Justice Department official and New York-based attorney. Kentโ€™s email noted that an official from Blue Star told him that the company โ€œdid not represent Nikolaiโ€™s interests in the U.S., since he had retained separate legal counsel.โ€

 

On the exact same day Shokin was fired, March 29, 2016, Buretta attempted to contact Sevruk, Shokinโ€™s interim replacement, as reported at the time by The Hill.

 

The Hill reported that Blue Starโ€™s outreach to Sevruk included tasking a staff member at the Ukrainian embassy in Washington, DC., Andrii Telizhenko, to facilitate a meeting with Sevruk.

That meeting, which took place in Ukraine on April 6, 2017, also included Buretta and Tramontano to speak with the interim prosecutor. Shortly after that meeting, Sevruk was replaced by Yuriy Lutsenko as Ukraineโ€™s new prosecutor, which pleased Joe Biden, who called him โ€œsolid.โ€

 

This was around the same time that Joe Biden met with Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman on June 15, 2016, and announced plans to commit an additional $220 million to Ukraine.

 

After all of this occurred, the investigations into Burisma and Zlochevsky were amazingly shut down over the course of a couple of months and in mid-January 2017, Burisma announced that it had been cleared of all legal proceedings against it, as well as the case against Zlochevsky.

 

After the Burisma investigations were closed, Joe Biden once again flew to Ukraine, in this case only days before he left the vice presidency. That was his sixth trip to the country in three years, Epoch Times reported.

 

Think of all that occurred just to get the investigation into Burisma closedโ€”bribing of a prosecutor, firing his replacement, numerous meetings with an interim prosecutor, pressure on a fourth but finally the cases were dropped.

 

All of this came about after Hunter Biden, with zero experience in the energy sector, was placed on Burismaโ€™s board to the tune of $83,333 a month, or $1 million per year, according to the New York Post.

 

Is it mere irony that all of this occurred while Joe Biden was vice president and in a position to strong-arm Ukraine into dropping the investigation into Burisma? Or is it corruption? Hunter Bidenโ€™s position on the Burisma board were suddenly cut in half after President Trump was inaugurated and Joe Biden was of no further use to Burisma.

 

The point of much of this goes back to the first impeachment of the former president. The fact that Kentโ€™s email was only recently made available as opposed to during the impeachment hearings, it would have vindicated much of what Trump was impeached for. Namely that initial investigations into Burisma were terminated when the original prosecutor was bribed, and the fact that it took place while Hunter Biden was in charge of Burismaโ€™s legal affairs.

 

Likewise it would have vindicated Trump who accused Hunter Biden of being corrupt, and also his claim that Joe Biden had pressured Ukraine into firing Shokin, who had reopened the investigations into Burisma.

While Kentโ€™s email was unknown during Trumpโ€™s first impeachment, the email from Pozhyarskyi to Hunter directing him to close down any cases against Burisma was released just three weeks before the 2020 election.

 

While some media outlets actually reported on that email and related events, including Joe Bidenโ€™s false claim that he โ€œknew nothingโ€ about Hunter Bidenโ€™s business dealings, the mainstream media, as well as social media colluded to suppress the story, knowing it would possibly hurt their preferred candidate, Joe Biden.

 

Likewise, the intelligence community engaged in a partisan attempt to paint the information as โ€œRussian disinformation.โ€

 

In addition, Attorney General William Barr and FBI Director Christopher Wray remained silent in the leadup to the election, despite the fact the FBI had taken possession of Hunter Bidenโ€™s laptop which contained many of the salacious emails in December 2019.

 

Once the 2020 election was secured for Joe Biden, Hunter Biden released a statement in which he admitted being under investigation for โ€œtax affairs.โ€ However despite Hunter Bidenโ€™s statement, the investigation was, in fact, much broader than what he admitted to, with the feds โ€œprobing potential money laundering and Hunter Bidenโ€™s foreign ties.โ€

 

The media of course accomplished their job. Since they had engaged in a blackout of the story and those who didnโ€™t watch Newsmax, Fox News or OANN and perhaps read the New York Post were unaware, many voted for old โ€œlunch bucket Joe.โ€

 

A poll taken late in 2020 showed that 45 percent of those who voted for Biden were completely unaware of the allegations against the Bidens. Many said had they known, they would not have voted for Joe Biden.

Desktop apps are essentially Chrome and plain old Javascript, extremely heavy but quick to get up and running for sites. Can take gigs of space for one app.

 

Native web apps are essentially JavaScript frameworks that have compile code bridges without access to those native api's. Author once write for all platforms. They tend to have slower execution and tend to be a little wonkier.

 

Progressive web apps are like native but only JavaScript and use CSS heavily but can be run like desktop apps also. It's the best of all worlds but requires expert knowledge of the underpinnings.

'Like a war zone' Panic in Germany as apartment block destroyed by massive fire

 

The fire broke out at a building in Essen in western Germany on Sunday night home to around 100 people. Essen fire brigade said they had โ€œdefinitelyโ€ not experienced a fire of that magnitude before.

 

Strong winds caused by Storm Antonia which battered the country over the weekend reportedly whipped up the flames, engulfing all 50 flats housed in the apartment block.

 

180 people from the building and nearby area were taken to safety and three people were taken to hospital.

 

So far no one has died and no one has been reported missing.

 

The alarm was sounded at 2.15am and around 150 emergency services personnel were called to the scene.

 

The houses were evacuated and residents were accommodated in a nearby university lecture hall.

 

Hospitals in the area were put on alert in case there were a high number of casualties however the fire brigade said it was a miracle that more people were not injured.

This video will encompass a summary of my GrapheneOS review after using it for 3 weeks. GrapheneOS is a consumer-grade open-source mobile operating system based on the Android Open Source Project, or AOSP. It's one among the many custom ROMs created on that platform. Unlike previous homemade ROMs, though, this one offers enhanced privacy and security. It improves technologies such as app sandboxing, exploit protection, and the permission model significantly.

 

Daniel Micay, the co-founder of CopperheadOS, a privacy and security-focused mobile OS, developed this relatively new mobile OS. GrapheneOS used to be known as the Android Hardening Project when it was created in late 2014. Micay and his team decided to rebrand the project in 2019 to better reflect how it has grown and matured.

 

Although GrapheneOS is based on Android, the two operating systems are not identical. One significant difference is that GrapheneOS is Google-free. That means no Google Play Store, Google Chrome, Google Maps, or any of Google's other apps and services. You might question why an operating system would keep Google out entirely when so many people rely on its services. Well, this is all part of the project's efforts to provide the most strong privacy and security possible to its customers; bringing Google and its snooping eyes into the mix would make it impossible. In essence, if you don't use Google, you won't be tracked, which means you'll have better privacy and security.

 

Apple's new on device scanning is a great reason to switch to a private mobile OS. Apple's NeuralHash works by transforming images on a user's iPhone or Mac into a unique string of letters and numbers known as a hash, which will be available in iOS 15 and macOS Monterey in the next month or two. Any time you make a minor alteration to an image, the hash is changed, which can prevent matching. According to Apple, NeuralHash aims to ensure that images that are identical and aesthetically similar โ€” such as cropped or manipulated photographs โ€” produce the same hash.

There's something infecting right-wing circles, and it's showing no sign of letting up: a fixation on Hillary Clinton that I'm calling"Hillary Clinton Derangement Syndrome," or "HDS" for short.

 

The symptoms of this persistent ailment include an unhealthy obsession with the former secretary of state from spreading lies about her past actions to blaming her for events with which she has no connection combined with an insatiable longing to see her run for president again in 2024.

 

A new HDS variant apparently emerged last week when special counsel John Durham, who has been investigating the origins of the FBI's Trump-Russia probe, filed a motion involving Michael Sussmann, a lawyer with ties to Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign who has been charged with lying to the FBI. (Sussmann has pleaded not guilty, and his case is headed for trial later this year.)

 

Durham's 13-page motion addressed a possible conflict of interest regarding Sussmann's legal counsel, but some on the right interpreted the document as revealing something more sinister about Clinton.

 

After seizing upon details about Sussman sharing internet data with the CIA in 2017, right-wing activists, Fox News reporters and former President Donald Trump himself all blasted out allegations that the Clinton campaign and its lawyers "worked to 'infiltrate' Trump Tower and White House servers," as former Trump administration aide Kash Patel told Fox News.

 

Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows tweeted, "They didn't just spy on Donald Trump's campaign. They spied on Donald Trump as sitting President of the United States." Trump claimed that the motion "provides indisputable evidence that my campaign and presidency were spied on by operatives paid by the Hillary Clinton Campaign." He added, "in a stronger period of time in our country, this crime would have been punishable by death."

 

That would help explain GOP Sen. Ted Cruz's response on Saturday night to the news that Jean-Luc Brunel, an associate of Jeffrey Epstein, had been found dead in his Paris cell. The Texas senator retweeted the news story and then wrote, "Anyone know where Hillary was this weekend?" Cruz โ€” like others infected with HDS โ€” clearly feels compelled to mention Hillary Clinton whenever possible, even in regards to headlines that have nothing to do with her.

 

HDS is an insidious condition that also appears to make those who are infected hate Clinton while paradoxically craving to see more of her in the political sphere. This helps explain why so many of the same people who have attacked Clinton for decades are also obsessed with the idea of Clinton running for president in 2024. It doesn't matter that Clinton has not even hinted at another presidential campaign; apparently HDS causes some to see things the rest of us don't.

 

For example, GOP Rep. Jim Jordan appeared on Fox News last week to declare that Clinton's (non-existent) spying on Trump was "worse than we thought." And then, moments later, Jordan added that "Hillary Clinton looks like she's going to try to run and if it's a rematch between her and President Trump, I think President Trump wins in a landslide."

 

Add to that Fox News host Tucker Carlson declaring last week that Clinton may be gearing up for a run in 2024, saying, "We fully support Hillary Clinton as she runs for president." This is no laughing matter, as these people are evidently sick โ€“ sick with HDS, that is.

 

Heartbreakingly, HDS is nothing new. It's been with us on a national scale since Clinton became First Lady in 1993 and metastasized from there. You could fill a medical encyclopedia with experts trying to understand who was "Patient Zero" for HDS, with past articles such as, "The dark depths of hatred for Hillary Clinton"; "Why do people dislike Hillary Clinton?"; and the simply put, "Why do they hate her?" There are even books on the topic, such as Michael D'Antonio's "The Hunting of Hillary: The Forty-Year Campaign to Destroy Hillary Clinton."

 

If only there were a vaccine for HDS, or an HDS rehabilitation center to help those suffering to overcome this derangement that appears to be eating away at their rationality. Perhaps we can organize an HDS telethon to raise funds to better research cures for this syndrome. (Hillary Clinton, it seems, is trying a different approach to eradicating HDS by threatening a defamation lawsuit.)

 

But even if there were a cure for HDS, I doubt all of those struggling would avail themselves of it. Some don't seem to understand that they have a problem. Whether it's for ratings or social clout, it appears some of those infected with HDS not only want Clinton to live rent-free in their heads, but desperately need for her to be there.

What is the Suisse secrets leak?

Suisse secrets is a global journalistic investigation into a leak of data from the Swiss bank Credit Suisse. It comprises more than 18,000 bank accounts that were leaked to Sรผddeutsche Zeitung by a whistleblower who said Swiss banking secrecy laws were "immoral". The data, which is only a partial capture of the bankโ€™s 1.5 million private banking clients, is linked to more than 30,000 Credit Suisse clients. The leak includes personal, shared and corporate bank accounts โ€“ holding, on average, 7.5m Swiss francs (CHF). Almost 200 accounts in the data are worth more than 100m CHF, and more than a dozen are valued in the billions. While some accounts in the data were open as far back as the 1940s, more than two-thirds were opened since 2000. Many of those were still open well into the last decade, and a portion remain open today.

The Guardian was among more than 48 media partners around the world including journalists at Le Monde, NDR, the Miami Herald and the New York Times. They spent months using the data to investigate the bank, in a project coordinated by Sรผddeutsche Zeitung and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). They unearthed evidence Credit Suisse accounts had been used by clients involved in torture, drug trafficking, money laundering, corruption and other serious crimes, suggesting widespread failures of due diligence by the bank. It is not illegal to have a Swiss account and the leak also contained data of legitimate clients who had done nothing wrong. In its response, Credit Suisse said it "strongly rejects the allegations and inferences about the bankโ€™s purported business practices".

They include a human trafficker in the Philippines, a Hong Kong stock exchange boss jailed for bribery, a billionaire who ordered the murder of his Lebanese pop star girlfriend and executives who looted Venezuelaโ€™s state oil company, as well as corrupt politicians from Egypt to Ukraine.

One Vatican-owned account in the data was used to spend โ‚ฌ350m (ยฃ290m) in an allegedly fraudulent investment in London property that is at the centre of an ongoing criminal trial of several defendants, including a cardinal.

The huge trove of banking data was leaked by an anonymous whistleblower to the German newspaper Sรผddeutsche Zeitung. โ€œI believe that Swiss banking secrecy laws are immoral,โ€ the whistleblower source said in a statement. โ€œThe pretext of protecting financial privacy is merely a fig leaf covering the shameful role of Swiss banks as collaborators of tax evaders.โ€

Credit Suisse said that Switzerlandโ€™s strict banking secrecy laws prevented it from commenting on claims relating to individual clients.

โ€œCredit Suisse strongly rejects the allegations and inferences about the bankโ€™s purported business practices,โ€ the bank said in a statement, arguing that the matters uncovered by reporters are based on โ€œselective information taken out of context, resulting in tendentious interpretations of the bankโ€™s business conduct.โ€

The timing of the leak could hardly be worse for Credit Suisse, which has recently been beset by major scandals. Last month, it lost its chairman, Antรณnio Horta-Osรณrio, after he twice broke Covid-19 regulations.

That capped an unprecedented year of controversies in which the bank became embroiled in the collapse of the supply chain finance firm Greensill Capital and the US hedge fund Archegos Capital, and was fined ยฃ350m over its role in a loan scandal in Mozambique.

This month, Credit Suisse became the first major Swiss bank in the countryโ€™s history to face criminal charges โ€“ which it denies โ€“ relating to allegation it helped launder money from the cocaine trade on behalf of the Bulgarian mafia.

However, the repercussions of the leak could be much broader than one bank, threatening a crisis for Switzerland, which retains one of the worldโ€™s most secretive banking laws. Swiss financial institutions manage about 7.9tn CHF (ยฃ6.3tn) in assets, nearly half of which belongs to foreign clients.

The Suisse secrets project sheds a rare light on one of the worldโ€™s largest financial centres, which has grown used to operating in the shadows. It identifies the convicts and money launderers who were able to open bank accounts, or keep them open for years after their crimes emerged. And it reveals how Switzerlandโ€™s famed banking secrecy laws helped facilitate the looting of countries in the developing world.

Disgraced executives, fraudsters, traffickers โ€“ clients

When Ronald Li Fook-shiu approached a banker to open an account in 2000, he is unlikely to have been viewed as a run-of-the-mill client. A former chairman of the Hong Kong stock exchange, he was one of the wealthiest people in the city, where he was known as the โ€œgodfather of the stock marketโ€. But he was perhaps better known for the time he spent in a maximum security prison.

Liโ€™s career had ended in disgrace in 1990, when he was convicted of taking bribes in exchange for listing companies on the stock exchange. However, a decade later Li was nonetheless able to open an account that later held 59m CHF (ยฃ26.3m), according to the leak.

He has since died, but his case is one of dozens discovered by reporters appearing to show Credit Suisse opened or maintained accounts for clients who had serious convictions that might be expected to show up in due diligence checks. There are other instances in which Credit Suisse may have taken quick action after red flags emerged, but the case nonetheless shows that dubious clients have been attracted to the bank.

Like every other bank in the world, Credit Suisse professes to have stringent control mechanisms to carry out extensive due diligence on its customers to โ€œensure that the highest standards of conduct are upheldโ€. In banking parlance, such controls are called know-your-client or KYC checks.

A 2017 leaked report commissioned by Switzerlandโ€™s financial regulator shed some light on the bankโ€™s internal procedures at that time. Clients would face intensified scrutiny when flagged as a politically exposed person from a high-risk country, or a person involved in a high-risk activity such as gambling, weapons trading, financial services or mining, the report said.

Relationship managers were expected to use external sources to verify customers and their risk levels, according to the leak, including news articles or databases such as the Thomson Reuters World-Check platform, which is used widely in the financial services sector to flag when people are arrested, charged, investigated or convicted of a serious crime.

Such controls might be expected to prevent a bank from opening accounts for clients such as Rodoljub Raduloviฤ‡, a Serbian securities fraudster indicted in 2001 by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. However, the leaked data identifies him as the co-signatory of two Credit Suisse company accounts. The first was opened in 2005, the year after the SEC had secured a default judgment against Raduloviฤ‡ for running a pump-and-dump scheme.

One of Raduloviฤ‡โ€™s company accounts held 3.4m CHF (ยฃ2.2m) before they closed in 2010. He was recently given a 10-year prison sentence by a court in Belgrade for his role trafficking cocaine from South America for the organised crime boss Darko ล ariฤ‡. Raduloviฤ‡โ€™s lawyer did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Due diligence is not only for new clients. Banks are required to continually reassess existing customers. The 2017 report said Credit Suisse screened customers at least every three years and as often as once a year for the riskiest clients. The bank might, therefore, have been expected to have discovered that its German client Eduard Seidel was convicted of bribery in 2008. Seidel was an employee of Siemens. As the multinationalโ€™s lead in Nigeria, he oversaw a campaign of industrial-scale bribery to secure lucrative contracts for his employer by funnelling cash to corrupt Nigerian politicians.After German authorities raided the Munich headquarters of Siemens in 2006, Seidel immediately confessed his role in the bribery scheme, though he said he had never stolen from the company or appropriated its slush funds. However, the leaked Credit Suisse data shows his accounts were left open until at least well into the last decade. At one point after he left Siemens, one account was worth 54m CHF (ยฃ24m). Seidelโ€™s lawyer declined to say whether the accounts were his. He said his client had addressed all outstanding matters relating to his bribery offences and wished to move on with his life.

The lawyer did not respond to repeated invitations to explain the source of the 54m CHF. Siemens said it did not know about the money and that its review of its own cashflows shed no light on the account.

While Credit Suisse said in its statement it could not comment on any specific clients, the bank said โ€œactions have been taken in line with applicable policies and regulatory requirements at the relevant times, and that related issues have already been addressedโ€.

In some instances, Credit Suisse is understood to have frozen accounts belonging to problematic clients. Yet questions remain about how quickly the bank moved to close them.

One client, Stefan Sederholm, a Swedish computer technician who opened an account with Credit Suisse in 2008, was able to keep it open for two-and-a-half years after his widely reported conviction for human trafficking in the Philippines, for which he was given a life sentence.

Sederholmโ€™s crime first came to light in 2009, when police in Manila raided a storefront purporting to be the local chapter of the Mindanao Peoplesโ€™ Peace Movement, and discovered about 17 women in cubicles with webcams performing sex shows for foreign customers. He was convicted in 2011.

A representative for Sederholm said Credit Suisse never froze his accounts and did not close them until 2013 when he was unable to provide due diligence material. Asked why Sederholm needed a Swiss account, they said that he was living in Thailand when it was opened, adding: โ€œCan you please tell me if you would prefer to put your money in a Thai or Swiss bank?โ€

Ferdinand and Imelda pillage the Philippines

Swiss banks have cultivated their trusted reputation since as far back as 1713, when the Great Council of Geneva prohibited bankers from revealing details about the fortunes being deposited by European aristocrats. Switzerland soon became a tax haven for many of the worldโ€™s elites and its bankers nurtured a โ€œduty of absolute silenceโ€ about their clients affairs.

The custom was enshrined in statute in 1934 with the introduction of Switzerlandโ€™s banking secrecy law, which criminalised the disclosure of client banking information to foreign authorities. Within decades, wealthy clients from all over the world were flocking to Swiss banks. Sometimes, that meant clients with something to hide.

One of the most notorious cases in Credit Suisseโ€™s history involved the corrupt Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos and his wife, Imelda. The couple are estimated to have siphoned as much as $10bn from the Philippines during the three terms Ferdinand was president, which ended in 1986.

It has long been known that Credit Suisse was one of the first banks to help the Marcoses ravage their own country and in one infamous episode even helped them open Swiss accounts under the fake names โ€œWilliam Saundersโ€ and โ€œJane Ryanโ€. In 1995, a Zurich court ordered Credit Suisse and another bank to return $500m of stolen funds to the Philippines.

The leaked data contains an account that belonged to Helen Rivilla, an attorney convicted in 1992 for helping launder money on behalf of Ferdinand Marcos. Despite this, she was able to open a Swiss account in 2000, as was her husband, Antonio, who faced similar charges that were subsequently dropped.

It is hard to know how Credit Suisse could have missed the money-laundering case linking the couple to the corrupt Philippine leader, which was reported by the Associated Press. The couple, who could not be reached for comment, were able to hold about 8m CHF (ยฃ3.6m) with the bank before their accounts were closed in 2006.

One former Credit Suisse employee at the time alleges there was a deeply ingrained culture in Swiss banking of looking the other way when it came to problematic clients. โ€œThe bankโ€™s compliance departments [were] masters of plausible deniability,โ€ they told a reporter from the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, one of the coordinators of the Suisse secrets project. โ€œNever write anything down that could expose an account that is non-compliant and never ask a question you do not want to know the answer to.โ€

The 2000s was also a decade in which foreign regulators and tax authorities became increasingly frustrated at their inability to penetrate the Swiss financial system. That changed in 2007, when the UBS banker Bradley Birkenfeld voluntarily approached US authorities with information about how the bank was helping thousands of wealthy Americans evade tax with secret accounts.

A Chinese security guard was kidnapped and used as a 'blood slave' by a gang in Cambodia after he was lured to the country by a fake job ad.

 

The 31-year-old man, who has been identified only by his surname Li, was held captive and had 27 ounces of blood drained from him every month for six months.

 

It is believed that the gang who kidnapped Li sold his blood to private buyers online.

 

A normal blood donation usually takes around 16 ounces - 11 ounces less than the amount drained from Li - which is around 8 per cent of the average blood volume of an adult.

 

As a result of the excessive blood extraction, Li, who managed to escape the gang earlier this month, had multiple organ failures and his arms were covered with bruises from the needles.

 

The victim told Beijing Youth Daily he had been trafficked last June after going to China's southwestern region of Guangxi in response to a job advert for work as a nightclub bouncer.

 

Li said he was smuggled to the Cambodian coastal city of Sihanoukville by a criminal gang who sold him for ยฃ13,598 ($18,500) to another gang who forced him to work for various telemarketing fraud schemes.

 

In September, his captors began carrying out repeated extractions of blood from him after he refused to work and collect a ransom, which put his life in danger.

 

So much blood had been drained from Li that his captors started drawing from his head because the veins in his arms failed to yield enough blood.

 

The American Red Cross says that people should not donate blood more frequently than every 56 days, but for LI, the gang would extract the blood every month.

 

Li was only able to flee the gang when one member switched sides and was admitted to hospital on February 12 where he is in a stable condition after suffering from multiple organ failures.

 

Li said he was used as a 'blood slave' by the gang when he refused to participate in their fraud scheme and collect ransom for them.

 

He said one of the gang members threatened that they would sell him to organ harvesters if he did not give them his blood, the Asia Pacific Times reported.

 

Li said the gang would use electric prods to beat him and other men they had held captive.

 

Li, who had worked as a security guard in Shenzhen and Beijing before being trafficked, said he saw at least seven other men detained with him in a large room.

 

He said the others did not have their blood taken as much as him because his blood type is O, a universal blood type, reports the South China Morning Post.

 

'From top managers to HR staff [of this company] are all Chinese. They treat us coldly,' Li said. He added that they regarded him and the other captives as 'tools for making money'.

 

Li said he had been tricked by a fake job advertisement on the Chinese online classifieds platform 58.com.

 

The company, China's equivalent of Craigslist, told state media on Thursday it would cooperate with a police investigation in Cambodia although it had 'not yet established' whether the fraudulent job advert had been on its platform.

 

The Chinese embassy in Cambodia on Thursday in a statement confirmed parts of Li's story, but did not mention 58.com.

 

'The Chinese embassy in Cambodia once again reminds Chinese citizens who want to work in Cambodia to follow formal channels and not to believe in false adverts for high-paying jobs,' the statement said.

 

Sihanoukville has in recent years seen a surge of Chinese investment and immigration, mainly in the casino business, which is banned in mainland China.

 

Illegal online gambling operations targeting the mainland market are often run in overseas territories like Cambodia or the Philippines, where enforcement is less strict.

 

58.com's response to state media went viral on Friday, drawing over 200 million views on Chinese social media platform Weibo, where users accused 58.com of a wide range of unethical practices, from the high number of scams on the platform to the indiscriminate purchase and selling of user data.

 

58.com could not be immediately reached for comment. The company in 2020 was taken private by a consortium of investors who were backed by private equity firms Warburg Pincus and General Atlantic.

Birkenfeld was viewed as a traitor in Switzerland, where banking whistleblowers are often held in contempt. However, a wide-ranging US Senate investigation later uncovered the aggressive tactics used by UBS and Credit Suisse, the latter of which was found to have sent bankers to high-end events to recruit clients, courted a potential customer with free gold, and in one case even delivered sensitive bank statements hidden in the pages of a Sports Illustrated magazine.

The revelations sent shock waves through Switzerlandโ€™s financial sector and enraged the US, which pressured Switzerland into unilaterally disclosing which of its taxpayers had secret Swiss accounts from 2014. That same year, Switzerland reluctantly signed up to the international convention on the automatic exchange of banking Information.

By adopting the so-called common reporting standard (CRS) for sharing tax data, Switzerland in effect agreed that its banks would in the future exchange information about their clients with tax authorities in foreign countries. They started doing so in 2018.

Membership of the global exchange system is often cited by Switzerlandโ€™s banking industry as a turning point. โ€œThere is no longer Swiss bank client confidentiality for clients abroad,โ€ the Swiss Bankers Association told the Guardian. โ€œWe are transparent, there is nothing to hide in Switzerland.โ€

Switzerlandโ€™s almost 90-year-old banking secrecy law, however, remains in force โ€“ and was recently broadened. The Tax Justice Network estimates that countries around the world collectively lose $21bn (ยฃ15.4bn) each year in tax revenues because of Switzerland. Many of those countries will be poorer nations that have not signed up to the CRS data exchange.

More than 90 countries, most of which are in the developing world, remain in the dark when their wealthy taxpayers hide their money in Swiss accounts.

This inequity in the system was cited by the whistleblower behind the leaked data, who said the CRS system โ€œimposes a disproportionate financial and infrastructural burden on developing nations, perpetuating their exclusion from the system in the foreseeable futureโ€.

โ€œThis situation enables corruption and starves developing countries of much-needed tax revenue. These countries are the ones that therefore suffer most from Switzerlandโ€™s reverse-Robin-Hood stunt,โ€ they said.

The whistleblower acknowledged that the leak would contain accounts that were legitimate and declared by the client to their tax authority.

โ€œI am aware that having an offshore Swiss bank account does not necessarily imply tax evasion or any other financial crime,โ€ they said. โ€œHowever, it is likely that a significant number of these accounts were opened with the sole purpose of hiding their holderโ€™s wealth from fiscal institutions and/or avoiding the payment of taxes on capital gains.โ€

It was not possible for journalists in the Suisse secrets project to establish how many of the more than 18,000 accounts in the leak were declared to relevant tax authorities

Ferdinand Marcos may have been Credit Suisseโ€™s most notorious client. He is arguably rivalled only by relatives of the brutal Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha, who is believed to have stolen as much as $5bn from his people in just six years. It has long been known that Credit Suisse provided services to Abachaโ€™s sons, opening Swiss accounts in which they deposited $214m.

Credit Suisse was publicly contrite after being kicked off a sustainable investment index over the affair. โ€œWe understand that the index was not really happy with us being involved with Abacha โ€“ we were not happy ourselves,โ€ a spokesperson said in 1999. โ€œBut we have addressed those problems and for several years we have taken internal measures to make sure nothing similar happens in the future.โ€

Banks that enable kleptocrats to launder their money are complicit in a particularly far-reaching crime. The consequences for already impoverished populations can be devastating, as state coffers are siphoned, basic standards are eroded and trust in democracy plummets.

Politicians and state officials are among the riskiest customers for banks because of their access to public funds, particularly in developing nations with fewer legal safeguards against corruption. Banks and other financial institutions are required to subject politically exposed persons, or PEPs, to the most stringent checks, known as โ€œenhanced due diligenceโ€.

The leaked Credit Suisse data is peppered with politicians and their allies who have been linked to corruption before, during or after they had their accounts. None are as well known as the Marcoses or the Abachas, but several wielded great power in countries from Syria to Madagascar, where they amassed personal fortunes.

They include Pavlo Lazarenko, who served a corrupt single year as prime minister of Ukraine between 1997 and 1998 before applying for an account at Credit Suisse. One month after pressure from rivals forced Lazarenko to announce his resignation, he opened his first of two Credit Suisse accounts. One was later valued at almost 8m CHF (ยฃ3.6m).

Lazarenko was later estimated by Transparency International to have looted $200m from the Ukrainian government, allegedly by threatening to harm businesses unless they paid him 50% of their profits. He pleaded guilty to money laundering in Switzerland in 2000, and was later indicted in the US for corruption and sentenced to nine years in prison in 2006 in relation to bribes received from a Ukrainian businessman.

His lawyer said those convictions did not relate to the theft of any money from the people of Ukraine. Lazarenko, who reportedly lives in California, has resisted returning to the country, where he still faces accusations he stole $17m. His lawyer said his Credit Suisse accounts had not been accessed for two decades and were frozen in connection with court proceedings against him.

It remains unclear why Credit Suisse allowed Lazarenko to open an account and deposit such huge sums in the first place, given his background; before entering politics, Lazarenko was a functionary in charge of a collective farm.

Monika Roth, an expert on money laundering and a professor at Lucerne University, said Swiss banks had for a long time struggled to properly challenge politicians and public officials who, after stints in public office on relatively modest salaries, turned up with huge sums to deposit. She said: โ€œNobody wants to have asked the question: how is that possible?โ€

Around the time it was doing business with Lazarenko, Credit Suisse appears to have also made inroads into the Egyptian political establishment under the dictator Hosni Mubarak, who was president for three decades until 2011. The bankโ€™s clients included Mubarakโ€™s sons, Alaa and Gamal, who established business empires in Egypt

The brothersโ€™ relationship with the bank spanned decades, with the earliest joint account opened by the brothers in 1993. By 2010 โ€“ the year before the popular revolt that ousted their father โ€“ an account belonging to Alaa held 232m CHF (ยฃ138m).

After the Arab spring uprisings their fortunes changed, and in 2015 the brothers and their father were sentenced to three years in jail by an Egyptian court for embezzlement and corruption. They say the case was politically motivated, but after an unsuccessful appeal Alaa and Gamal paid an estimated $17.6m to the Egyptian government in a settlement agreement that made no admissions of guilt.

Lawyers for the brothers reject any suggestion they were corrupt, saying their rights were violated during the Egyptian case, and 10 years of wide-ranging and intrusive investigations into their global assets by foreign authorities has not uncovered any legal violations. They added that their Swiss accounts had been frozen for over a decade, pending the resolution of investigations by the Swiss authorities.

Other Credit Suisse clients linked to Hosni Mubarak were the late tycoon Hussein Salem โ€“ who acted as a financial consigliere for the dictator for nearly three decades, amassed a fortune through preferred tender deals and died in exile after facing money-laundering charges โ€“ and Hisham Talaat Moustafa, a billionaire politician in Mubarakโ€™s party.

Moustafa, who could not be reached for comment, was convicted in 2009 of hiring a hitman to murder his ex-girlfriend, the Lebanese pop star Suzanne Tamim โ€“ but his account was not closed until 2014.

Another Mubarak henchman linked to Credit Suisseโ€™s banking services was his former spy chief Omar Suleiman. His associates are listed in the data as beneficial owners of an account that held 63m CHF (ยฃ26m) in 2007. Suleiman was a feared figure in Egypt, where he oversaw widespread torture and human rights abuses.

Chinese officials investigate woman chained by neck in shed

 

Chinese officials are reportedly investigating a distressing video depicting a woman chained by the neck in a shed that has sparked concerns about human trafficking.

 

Chinese authorities identified the woman Monday as Xiaohuamei, which means Little Plum Blossom, and said her relatives had not heard from her since 1996, the Wall Street Journal reported. She is believed to be mentally ill, and officials said they are investigating her husband.

 

โ€œThis case is egregious and especially bad,โ€ Yaqiu Wang, a senior researcher on China at Human Rights Watch, told Bloomberg News. โ€œOver the years, we have heard many stories about women being forced into villages due to a gender imbalance.โ€

 

The video was posted by a Chinese vlogger, or video blogger, who visited her village Jan. 26. It included interviews with her children, who informed the vlogger that they feed her every day. The vlogger noted that it was 0 degrees Celsius at that point and that Xiaohuamei was wearing thin clothing. The video sparked backlash and outrage on Chinese social media. It also prompted concerns about possible human trafficking in the case.

 

On Jan. 28, shortly after the video of Xiaohuamei surfaced, officials from, Feng County, where she is from, said she was married to a local man named Dong and was the mother of eight children, according to the Wall Street Journal. At the time, officials said she was living separately from her family because she was sometimes violent.

 

On Monday, Chinese authorities in Xuzhou said they believe both of Xiaohuamei's parents died and that she became a beggar in 1998 until Dong took her in and married her, the South China Morning Post reported. She was previously married to another man until getting divorced in 1996, and her mother tried to get her treatment in Jiangsu at the time, according to the report. Jiangsu is more than 2,000 miles away from where she was found in the January video.

 

Authorities in Xuzhou also confirmed through DNA testing that Xiaohuamei is the biological mother of her eight children, What's On Weibo reported. This is in violation of China's current three-child policy, though it is unclear if Xiaohuamei or her husband will face penalties for violating the policy.

 

Xiaohuamei currently has nine teeth left due to a gum infection, doctors told China Central Television. Following the controversy over the video, she has been taken to a local hospital where she is being treated for schizophrenia, the outlet reported.

Colby Martin, of White Pigeon, was initially charged with manslaughter after he allegedly struck Melody Rohrer with his car on September 20 and moved her body about 26 miles southwest, Van Buren County Sheriff's Office said at the time.

 

Prosecutors upgraded his charges to open murder during a hearing at Van Buren County District Court on Wednesday, after investigators revealed that Martin searched necrophilia-related pornography immediately after Rohrerโ€™s death, ABC 13 reported.

 

Detectives also found Rohrerโ€™s DNA on condoms found in Martinโ€™s car and in a trash can near his house, the news outlet added.

The data reveals Credit Suisse accounts held by several more intelligence and military figures and their family members, including in Pakistan, Jordan, Yemen and Iraq. One Algerian client was Khaled Nezzar, who served as minister of defence until 1993 and participated in a coup that precipitated a brutal civil war in which the military junta he was part of was accused of disappearances, mass detentions, torture and execution of detainees.

Nezzarโ€™s alleged role in human rights abuses had been widely documented by 2004, when his account was opened. It contained a maximum balance of 2m CHF (ยฃ900,000) and remained open until 2013, two years after he was arrested in Switzerland for suspected war crimes. He denies wrongdoing and the investigation is ongoing.

If ordinary Algerians, Egyptians and Ukrainians have reason to complain that Credit Suisse may have aided nefarious leaders, their grievances pale in comparison with Venezuelans.

Reporters working on the Suisse secrets project identified Credit Suisse accounts linked to almost two dozen business people, officials and politicians implicated in corrupt schemes in Venezuela, most of which revolved around the state oil company, Petrรณleos de Venezuela (PDVSA).

โ€œCorruption has always been around in PDVSA, in varying degrees and levels,โ€ said Cรฉsar Mata-Garcia, an academic at the University of Dundee specialising in international petroleum law. โ€œThe words โ€˜Venezuelaโ€™, โ€˜PDVSAโ€™ and โ€˜oilโ€™ are an alarm bell for banks.โ€

If so, that does not appear to have stopped Credit Suisse acquiring clients later revealed to be involved in numerous US investigations and prosecutions linked to PDVSA and the looting of the Venezuelan economy.

One case involves two US-based businessmen with Venezuelan connections, Roberto Rincรณn Fernรกndez and Abraham Shiera Bastidas, who in 2009 set about bribing officials in exchange for lucrative PDVSA contracts with the help of an associate, Fernando Ardila Rueda. Among those who allegedly received bungs were the energy vice-minister, Nervis Villalobos Cรกrdenas, and a senior PDVSA official, Luis De Lรฉon Perez.

In 2015, US prosecutors began indicting the participants; court papers make repeated reference to payments into accounts in an unnamed Swiss bank. However, the leaked data reveals all five men had Credit Suisse accounts active at the time of the offences. Of the five, four have pleaded guilty. The exception, Villalobos, is resisting extradition to the US from Spain.

Some of the Venezuela-linked Credit Suisse accounts contained enormous sums; Villalobos had as much as 9.5m CHF (ยฃ6.3m) in his account and De Lรฉon had as much as 22m (ยฃ15.5m). Rincรณn, the businessman paying their bribes, had more than 68m CHF (ยฃ44.2m) in his account as of November 2015, the month prior to his arrest.

โ€˜How many rogue bankers before you become a rogue bank?โ€™

When Credit Suisseโ€™s ornate headquarters were constructed in the 1870s in Zurich, they were designed to symbolise โ€œSwitzerland as a financial centreโ€. More than 150 years later, Credit Suisse occupies the same grand premises and Switzerland remains a global offshore centre, much as it has done for the last 300 years.

It is only in recent decades that Credit Suisse, one of Switzerlandโ€™s oldest and most cherished banks, acquired its reputation for calamity. As one commentator observed earlier this week: โ€œThe bank boasts that its purpose is to serve its wealthy clients โ€˜with care and entrepreneurial spiritโ€™, but at this stage most of them would probably be happy if it could just avoid yet another major scandal.โ€

Horta-Osรณrio lasted less than a year before resigning last month. Shortly after Credit Suisse appointed its new chairman, Axel Lehmann, the bank reported a loss of 1.6bn CHF (ยฃ1.3bn) in the fourth quarter, in part because it had put aside more than 400m CHF (ยฃ320m) to deal with unspecified โ€œlegacy litigation mattersโ€.

And there is no shortage of those. The scandals involving Greensill, Archegos and Mozambique bonds have dogged the bank over the past year.

Over the past three decades, Credit Suisse has faced at least a dozen penalties and sanctions for offences involving tax evasion, money laundering, the deliberate violation of US sanctions and frauds carried out against its own customers that span multiple decades and jurisdictions. In total, it has racked up more than $4.2bn in fines or settlements.

That includes the $2.6bn the Swiss bank agreed to pay US authorities after pleading guilty to conspiring to aid tax evasion in 2014; the $536m it was fined by the US five years before for deliberately circumventing US sanctions against countries including Iran and Sudan in 2009, and other payouts to Germany and Italy over tax evasion allegations.

Against this backdrop, the Suisse secrets revelations may fuel questions over whether Credit Suisseโ€™s challenges are indicative of a deep malaise at the bank.

Jeff Neiman, a Florida-based attorney who represents a number of Credit Suisse whistleblowers, believes the sheer number of scandals involving the bank indicates a deeper problem.

โ€œThe bank likes to say itโ€™s just rogue bankers. But how many rogue bankers do you need to have before you start having a rogue bank?โ€ he said. Neiman alleges there has been a culture at the bank โ€œwhich encourages its bankers probably from the top down to hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil, bury their heads in the sand on a good day, and on many days, actively assist folks to skirt whatever the law may be in order to best protect assets under managementโ€.โ€

Such allegations are strongly rejected by Credit Suisse. โ€œIn line with financial reforms across the sector and in Switzerland, Credit Suisse has taken a series of significant additional measures over the last decade, including considerable further investments in combating financial crime,โ€ the bank said in its statement, adding that it upheld โ€œthe highest standards of conductโ€.

Its lawyers said it had fully cooperated with many of the investigations cited by the Guardian and that any past individual failings by the bank did not reflect its current business policies, practices or culture. In November, it announced it would put โ€œrisk management at the very core of the bankโ€.

The bank said its โ€œpreliminary reviewโ€ of the accounts flagged by the Suisse secrets reporting project had established that more than 90% of those reviewed were now closed or โ€œwere in the process of closure prior to receipt of the press inquiriesโ€. Of the remaining accounts, which remain active, the bank said it was โ€œcomfortable that appropriate due diligence, reviews and other control-related steps were taken, including pending account closuresโ€.

The Credit Suisse statement added: โ€œThese media allegations appear to be a concerted effort to discredit the bank and the Swiss financial marketplace, which has undergone significant changes over the last several years.โ€

The debate over whether Switzerlandโ€™s banking industry has undergone sufficient reforms is likely to be renewed in light of the leak. The whistleblower who shared the data suggested that banks alone should not be blamed for the state of affairs, as they are โ€œsimply being good capitalists by maximising profits within the legal framework they operate inโ€.

โ€œSimply put, Swiss legislators are responsible for enabling financial crimes and โ€“ by virtue of their direct democracy โ€“ the Swiss people have the power to do something about it. While I am aware that banking secrecy laws are partly responsible for the Swiss economic success story, it is my strong opinion that such a wealthy country should be able to afford a conscience.โ€

Do you need working notifications on GrapheneOS? The official Google Play releases can be installed and used in the regular app sandbox on GrapheneOS thanks to a compatibility layer. In contrast to circumventing the app sandbox and obtaining a vast amount of highly privileged access, Google Play receives no special access or privileges on GrapheneOS. The compatibility layer, on the other hand, teaches it how to work within the whole app sandbox. Because GrapheneOS doesn't use Google Play even when it's installed, it's not used as a backend for the OS services as it would be elsewhere.

 

Because Google Play apps are like regular apps on GrapheneOS, you have to install them in a specific user or work profile, and they're only available to that profile. It can only be used by apps in the same profile, and they must explicitly select to utilize it. It functions in the same way as any other software and has no unique features. It can't access data from other apps and requires specific user approval to access profile data or standard permissions, just like any other app. Apps in the same profile can communicate with mutual consent, and sandboxed Google Play is no exception.

Well, that's a good start and I wouldn't know what else to tell you to do. Everything I upgrade the iOS I go through the phone and all apps, settings etcโ€ฆโ€ฆ. and disable certain things. Siri, and other kind of shit. I've never had FB on the phone and twitwatt and other SM shit like that. I'm not one of these people who walk around with my nose in this thing 24/7. Actually, I can put it on the counter in the kitchen and not look at it for days sometimes unless I check the weather or something.

I remember reading something about FB and once you've installed it on your device, computer etcโ€ฆโ€ฆeven if you remove it the infrastructure of the app is still there and it can still access your mic, camera and invade your privacy. You know anything about that anon?

Following a charge by mounted police officers into a crowd of protesters, conflicting reports have emerged as to the condition of an elderly woman who was trampled.

 

According to Fox News contributor Sara Carter, the woman tramped by the mounted patrol may have passed away in the hospital. Others are reporting that the elderly woman is merely injured.

Based on footage available online, it appears at least one other protester was trampled.
