TV tower struck in Ukrainian city – reports

Unverified videos on social media have shown the area around the structure in Lisichansk on fire

A television tower was reportedly struck in the city of Lisichansk in eastern Ukraine on Wednesday amid an ongoing Russian military offensive in the country.

Several videos purportedly filmed in the city captured thick black smoke billowing from the area around the tower after what appears to have been a missile strike.

Lisichansk is located in the western part of Ukraine’s Lugansk region. According to 2019 data, the city, which is currently under Kiev’s control, is populated by more than 97,000.

On Wednesday, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that it had hit a TV tower in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev a day earlier.

The strike, which was carried out with high-precision weapons, was aimed at thwarting “information attacks” by Ukraine and didn’t affect any residential buildings, ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.

The Kiev authorities have claimed that at least five people were killed and as many injured in the attack.

Russia began its “special operation” in Ukraine last Thursday, saying the incursion was needed to demilitarize and “denazify” the Ukraine government, which had been perpetrating “genocide” in the breakaway regions of Donetsk and Lugansk.

More than 1,500 Ukrainian military installations have been destroyed since the start of the operation, the Russian Defense Ministry has said. According to Kiev, Moscow’s actions have amounted to an unprovoked invasion.

Spain U-turns on supplying offensive weapons to Ukraine

IMO anyone sending arms to Ukraine are in deep and have a lot to hide

Madrid follows Berlin in reversing course and deciding to send arms

Spain is to join several other EU nations and send offensive weapons to Ukraine amid the Russian invasion, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Wednesday, breaking with his earlier statements. Previously, Madrid had contributed only defensive supplies.

“I announce that Spain will deliver offensive military material to the Ukrainian resistance,” Sanchez told the Spanish parliament. He didn’t specify the types of weaponry it would provide.

“To a European threat, we must give a European – coordinated and united – response,” the PM said, explaining his decision.

The move was also a response to his critics, who had questioned his government’s commitment to the Ukrainian people, he added.

As recent as Monday, Sanchez had assured state-run broadcaster TVE that Spain would not be sending offensive weapons direct to Ukraine. He said his country would instead offer assistance through the European Peace Facility, which had earlier decided to allocate €500 million to arming Kiev. As of last week, Madrid had supplied 20 tons of protective military gear and humanitarian aid.

Spain had initially planned only to supply defensive weapons to Ukraine, but even this idea was vigorously opposed by the left-wing United We Can group, which is a minority partner in the coalition government.

A similar U-turn had already been enacted in Germany. Despite previously ruling out the delivery of lethal arms to Kiev,Berlin has since provided it with anti-tank missiles and Stinger air defense systems.

More than a dozen countries have now supplied some form of military aid to Ukraine. They include the US, the UK, and Canada, as well as several EU member states, among them France, Portugal, Belgium, and the Czech Republic.

Russian troops were sent into Ukraine last Thursday as part of what the Kremlin called a “special operation” to demilitarize and “denazify” the Ukraine government, which it said was responsible for “genocide” in the breakaway regions of Donetsk and Lugansk. Kiev has described the actions by Moscow as an unprovoked invasion, and urged the West to increase its sanctions on Russia.

Biden pledges not to send American military to Ukraine

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine took center stage during the US president’s State of the Union address

President Joe Biden has assured American lawmakers that US military personnel will not be taking part in the war in Ukraine, and not a single service member will be sent to the Eastern European country to fight the Russian Army. Delivering his State of the Union address to Congress on Tuesday, Biden stressed that the US “forces are not engaged and will not engage in the conflict with Russian forces in Ukraine.”

However, according to the US leader, American troops, air squadrons and warships are being deployed elsewhere on the continent in order to “defend our NATO allies in the event that Putin decides to keep moving west.” Biden named Poland, Romania, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia as the countries where the US military presence was being beefed up.

The American president went on to warn Moscow that, in keeping with NATO’s Article 5 principle, Washington would come to its NATO allies’ rescue should Russia target them, adding that the military bloc was prepared to “defend every inch of territory of NATO countries with the full force of our collective power.”

While it’s not sending troops to Ukraine, the US will provide the Eastern European country with “more than $1 billion in direct assistance,” which is expected to come in the form of military, economic, andhumanitarian aid, Biden revealed.

How much fucking humanitarian aid does one small country need? I hate these fuckers the money never gets to the people.

He also tried to allay Americans’ concerns over the Ukrainian crisis, reassuring them that the US is “going to be OK.”

According to the US president, the current military conflict will eventually leave “Russia weaker and the rest of the world stronger.”

Speaking of his Russian counterpart, Biden claimed that “Putin is now isolated from the world more than he has ever been” – a remark which members of Congress met with applause.

Since February 24, when Moscow launched its military offensive in Ukraine, the US along with its allies in Europe and Asia have slapped unprecedented sanctions on Russia, targeting, among other things, its central bank’s assets, major commercial banks, and the country’s leadership. Over 35 countries, including the US, Canada and the whole of the EU, have since closed their airspace to Russian planes.

Explaining the need for military intervention in the neighboring country, President Putin argued that Ukraine had to be “demilitarized and denazified.” He also cited the need to protect the Russian-speaking population of the Donbass republics. Ukraine and its Western allies insist that this is merely being used as a pretext to invade a sovereign state, and to install a pro-Russian puppet government in Kiev.

Ukraine demands security guarantees from NATO

The US and its allies must provide “legal” assurances that Ukraine is safe, even if it’s not in NATO, President Zelensky has said

Even if the West is currently not in a position to grant Kiev NATO membership, it must still make sure the country is “completely safe,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has insisted.

“Our partners, if they are not ready to take Ukraine into NATO… because Russia does not want Ukraine to be in NATO, should work out common security guarantees for Ukraine,” Zelensky told Reuters and CNN on Tuesday amid an ongoing invasion by Moscow.

Those ‘security guarantees’ are needed to ensure that “our territorial integrity, that our borders are protected, we have special relations with all our neighbors, we are completely safe,” he clarified.

According to Zelensky, the countries that would become “the guarantors that give us security” should “legally” provide such assurances to Kiev.

Speaking from what Reuters described as “a heavily guarded government compound” in the country’s capital, the Ukrainian leader has also praised the West for sending weapons to Kiev and slapping new sanctions on Moscow.

However, he called on the US and its allies to do even more, including by imposing a no-fly zone over Ukraine. Zelensky reiterated the call for airspace over his country to be shut, despite acknowledging that US President Joe Biden had earlier told him it wasn’t the time to introduce such a measure.

“This is not about dragging NATO countries into war. The truth is everyone has long since been dragged into war and definitely not by Ukraine, but by Russia,” he claimed.

Last year, Moscow had also asked Washington to provide written security guarantees that NATO wouldn’t be expanding into Ukraine and Georgia – a prospect seen as a major threat by Moscow. It also urged the American-led military bloc to scale back its provocative military activities near Russian borders. But the US declined to meet Russia’s demands.

Russian troops were sent to Ukraine last week as part of a special operation to demilitarize and “denazify” the government in Kiev in response to a “genocide” perpetrated in the breakaway regions of Donetsk and Lugansk.

Moscow has insisted that it isn’t targeting civilians, and is only striking Ukrainian military installations. Kiev has accused Moscow of carrying out an unprovoked invasion.

US-based former Russian FM calls on diplomats to resign

His demand was not received well at Moscow’s foreign ministry

A controversial former Russian foreign minister has come under fire after attempts to rally the country’s ambassadors to quit their posts in response to Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine.

In a fiery statement on Tuesday, Andrey Kozyrev urged the nation’s representatives abroad to “resign in protest.”

Kozyrev worked as the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic’s foreign minister, and served until 1996 after the collapse of the Soviet Union five years prior. While praised by the West, he is widely criticized in Russia for not being able to stand up to NATO’s aggressive actions in Bosnia and Iraq, andearned the nickname “Mr Yes.” He once publicly stated that Russia “has no national interests of its own,” and was accused by ex-Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev of working in the interests of the US State Department.

Now an American citizen,Kozyrev lives in Miamiwhere he has earned a reputation as a vehement critic of Moscow.

Dear Russian diplomats, you are professionals and not cheap propagandists. When I worked at the Foreign Ministry, I was proud of my colleagues. Now it is simply impossible to support the bloody fratricidal war in Ukraine,” he wrote on Twitter.

A representative from Moscow’s foreign ministry poured scorn on their former colleague’s words. “When recommending diplomats to surrender and betray, Kozyrev knows what he is talking about from his own experience. Colleagues were always ashamed that they had to work with him. No one has ever understood why such a person was appointed the head of the Foreign Ministry,” a source told TASS.

The unnamed foreign-service operative insisted that Kozyrev is associated with surrendering the country’s interests, and with betrayal. “Kozyrev has been living abroad for a long time. And for just as long he has been conducting anti-Russian subversive work,” the ministry source claimed.

“Kozyrev claims he was proud of the colleagues he worked with. I forgot to add that they did not reciprocate…Only thanks to a team of professionals was it possible to keep the department from complete collapse,” he added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the military action into Ukraine last Thursday after the leaders of the recently recognized breakaway Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics appealed for assistance in relation to what they claim was increasing “aggression” from Kiev’s armed forces.

Russian media watchdog warns Wikipedia over ‘Ukraine invasion’ entry

Kekkity, finally someone points put the obvious

The platform is accused of spreading false information about Russia’s offensive

Roskomnadzor has threatened Wikipedia with a ban over a page dubbed ‘Russia’s invasion of Ukraine’, the project said on Tuesday, sharing a notice sent by Russia’s media watchdog on social media.

The article contains “information purveyed in violation of the law,” the notice states. Namely, the article falsely claims major casualties among Russian troops and Ukrainian civilians, as well as spreads calls to withdraw cash from Russian banks due to western sanctions, the Roskomnadzor’s notice reads.

The watchdog itself remained silent on the matter, making no public statements about its threat. It also remained unclear whether Wikipedia would take any action to fix the article, as the project did not make any promises, but shared tips on how to circumvent the potential block instead.

Over the past few days, the watchdog blocked multiple internet outlets accused of spreading false information about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Moscow launched its large-scale military operation last week, saying it was the only option to protect the breakaway Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics from an allegedly imminent attack by Kiev forces.

Ukraine, however, has denied ever seeking to re-conquer the regions, condemning the assault as “unprovoked.” The two republics emerged back in 2014 following the Maidan events, which resulted in a coup ousting Ukraine’s democratically-elected government. The new Kiev authorities launched a military operation against the rogue regions, and while active combat was halted with the 2014-15 Minsk agreements, low-intensity warfare has continued in Ukraine’s east ever since.
