Russian opera singer sacked for not denouncing Putin
Met Opera parts ways with Anna Netrebko, despite soprano condemning war in Ukraine
Russian soprano Anna Netrebko has quit New Yorkâs Metropolitan Opera after management ordered her to ârepudiate her public supportâ for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Amid a wave of anti-Russian sentiment in the west following Russiaâs invasion of Ukraine, Netrebko is not the only high culture figure left suddenly unemployed.
In a statement on Thursday, the iconic opera company said that Netrebko had âwithdrawn from her upcoming Met performancesâ in Pucciniâs âTurandotâ and Verdi's âDon Carlo,â after ânot complyingâ with the firmâs demand that she ârepudiate her public support for Vladimir Putin.â
Two days earlier, Netrebko made a post on Instagram calling on Russia to end what she called âthis senseless war of aggressionâ in Ukraine, referring to the Russian militaryâs ongoing military operation to disarm and neutralize Ukraine by force.
However, management at the Met wanted the Russian diva to go a step further and personally denounce Putin, with a source telling the Guardian that the company pressured her several times to do so.
âIt is a great artistic loss for the Met and for opera,â said Met General Manager Peter Gelb. âAnna is one of the greatest singers in Met history, but with Putin killing innocent victims in Ukraine, there was no way forward.â
Netrebko, who has starred in nearly 200 performances at the Met, will be replaced in âTurandotâ by Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska, while a replacement for her role in âDon Carloâ has yet to be announced.
Netrebko received the Peopleâs Artist of Russia honor from Putin in 2008, and in 2014 donated a million roubles (then $18,500) to rebuild the Donetsk Opera House, which was damaged in fighting between pro-independence and Ukrainian forces. Although Netrebko received some criticism in the west for posing with separatist leaders in Donetsk, she insisted that she had ânothing to do with politics.â
In addition to the harsh economic sanctions levied on Russia by the US and EU, private firms and organizations have announced their own anti-Russia crackdowns. Amid a flight of western brands from Russia, stores in the US pulled Russian vodka from their shelves, the International Cat Federation banned Russian-bred and Russian-owned cats from its exhibitions, and Russian-owned businesses around the world have been targeted by vandals.
Netrebko is not the only icon of Russian high culture to lose her job in this climate. Conductor Valery Gergiev was fired from his job at the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra earlier this week after he refused a request by Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter to âclearly and unequivocally distance himself from the brutal war of aggression that Putin is waging against Ukraine.â
Gergiev, an associate of Putin, had earlier been declared unwelcome by venues around the world, including New Yorkâs Carnegie Hall, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the Edinburgh Festival.

Graham: Iâm Going to Introduce a Resolution Declaring Putin a âWar Criminalâ
Friday on FNCâs âHannity,â Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) announced he would introduce a resolution in the U.S. Senate declaring Russian President Vladimir Putin a âwar criminal.â
âI spoke to the Ukrainian ambassador earlier [Friday],â he said. âYour voice is breaking through. After I listen to your program every night, Putin needs a longer table. Hereâs what I would say, Iâve been a military prosecutor, defense attorney, judge for 30-something years. Iâm going to introduce a resolution next week â Iâll give it to you on your show â declaring that Putin is a war criminal. Itâs clear to me the world would be better off if the Russian people took Putin out tonight. The war on Ukraine would end, and Russia would have freedom they donât enjoy today. A steel curtain has descended upon the Russian people. What does that tell me? That Putin is afraid of his own people. Martial law has been virtually declared by Putin. I think the Russian people are not buying what Putin is selling when it comes to the Ukraine.â
âAnd if the Ukrainian people continue to fight as brave as they are, I think eventually, the dam will break in Russia,â Graham continued. âBut I want to say this crystal clear â without apology, without equivocation â the world would be better off if Putin were gone tonight. And the best way to end this war is not American boots on the ground, but for the Russian people to rise up, reclaim the honor of their country and take this guy out, Putin, by any means necessary. And if you donât understand that, you donât understand this war, and you donât understand the world in which we live.â

Vatican Chief Condemns Russiaâs âUnjustified Invasionâ of Ukraine
The Vatican prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, denounced Russiaâs âunjustified invasionâ of Ukraine this week at a liturgy at the Cathedral of Saints Sergius and Bacchus of the Ukrainians in Rome.
Cardinal Sandri told the congregation he had spoken by phone with Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk of the Greek Ukrainian Catholic Church and had âgathered up his tearsâ as well as those of many Ukrainians who at this moment âare fleeing, suffering from bombings, suffering from separations, and holding in their hearts the immense, invincible pain of mothers, fathers, soldiers, and children,â who have been forced to flee.
The cardinal noted that many of his Ukrainian hearers at the Ash Wednesday service âwill have to receive relatives and friends who are fleeing this senseless, unthinkable, unimaginable, inconceivable war,â as well as they may âhave relatives there who have not been able to escape.â
âTherefore, I want to tell you,â he said, that âall of us, our Congregation, but all of us, the Catholic Church suffers with you and opens to you the humble arms of fraternal affection and sharing your pain and your prayer.â
The cardinal encouraged his listeners to have recourse to prayer and to âbe strongâ in the knowledge that God is âwith us.â In the face of this war, the cardinal said, âwe have no words, we have no missiles, we have no guns, we have no tanks, we do not have the force of violence that wants to impose itself at any price.â
âWe have the strength of humility of those who receive the contempt of the world and of the powerful of the earth,â he added. âOur only weapon â in the face of so much shame for humanity and so much suffering â is what we have done today: pray.â
âI want to tell everyone with all my heart that Our Lady truly intercedes to bring peace and put an end to this abuse and this invincible suffering for the Ukrainian people,â the prelate declared.
âBe strong because God, the crucified Lord Jesus, and his Most Holy Mother are with us and with you,â he concluded.

White House disavows Grahamâs call for Putin assassination
South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham is facing pushback from the White House and all corners of Washington after calling for the assassination of President Vladimir Putin by the Russian people
White House disavows Grahamâs call for Putin assassinationBy MARY CLARE JALONICKAssociated PressThe Associated PressWASHINGTON
WASHINGTON (AP) â South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham is facing intense pushback from all corners of Washington after calling for the Russian people to end the Ukraine war by assassinating President Vladimir Putin. White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Friday that it is ânot the position of the United States government.â
Graham, a former Air Force lawyer and longtime defense hawk, tweeted Thursday evening that âthe only people who can fix thisâ are Russians.
âThe only way this ends is for somebody in Russia to take this guy out,â Graham tweeted. âYou would be doing your country â and the world â a great service.â
The tweet drew swift pushback from some of the most conservative and liberal members of Congress. Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz called it âan exceptionally bad idea.â Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican who was denounced this week for speaking at an event organized by a white nationalist, said Grahamâs tweet was âirresponsible, dangerous & unhinged.â And Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat who has faced criticism over comments about Israel, tweeted: âSeriously, wtf?â
On Friday, Psaki dismissed Grahamâs idea out of hand.
âThat is not the position of the United States government and certainly not a statement youâd hear come from the mouth of anybody working in this administration,â she said.
Grahamâs comment comes at a fraught time for the White House, which is orchestrating a tough Western response to Russiaâs invasion of Ukraine while trying to avoid a direct confrontation with Russia for fear of triggering a broader war. The Russian presidentâs raising of the alert level on his countryâs nuclear weapons stirred fears that he may be willing to consider the unthinkable step of using them.
The U.S. has ruled out sending troops to Ukraine and hasnât agreed to a no-fly zone over Ukraine that could lead to clashes with Russian warplanes.
With no letup in the war, the White House has asked Congress for $10 billion in emergency funding, with money going toward humanitarian aid and security needs. Approval could come as soon as next week. Lawmakers are also pushing the Biden administration to halt oil imports from Russia, a move that could tighten the vise on the countryâs increasingly isolated economy.
But Graham is alone in encouraging attempts on Putinâs life. Russiaâs ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, called his comments âunacceptable and outrageous.â
Graham was unbowed in a Fox News appearance Friday morning, saying that the best way for the fighting to end is to have âan Eliot Ness or Wyatt Earpâ in Russia, referring to fabled American law enforcement figures.
âI am convinced this is a one man problem surrounded by a few people,â Graham said.
Also Friday, Graham introduced a resolution with a bipartisan group of senators that calls for Putin to be held accountable for his actions in Ukraine, including investigations of war crimes.
Graham and his Senate colleagues will have an opportunity to talk to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy directly Saturday in a video call, according to a person familiar with the invitation from the Ukrainian embassy.
All senators are invited to the call, according to the person, who requested anonymity to discuss the private invitation. The meeting will be the first time U.S. lawmakers have talked to the Ukrainian president since Russia invaded his country.

United 93 Wreckage Photographs and Videos âExempt from Disclosureâ Nearly 21 Years After 9/11
After many denials over the years through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and after a Mandatory Declassification Review case was rejected (for an unclear reason) to get this material, The Black Vault filed a FOIA request to get the âphotographs and videos of the wreckage of United Flight 93, taken on or around September 11, 2001â released to the public.
That case was filed in December of 2021, and on February 14, 2022, the FBI responded by denying all of the records as being âexempt from disclosure.â
The full FOIA response is below.
