Russian opera singer sacked for not denouncing Putin

 

Met Opera parts ways with Anna Netrebko, despite soprano condemning war in Ukraine

 

Russian soprano Anna Netrebko has quit New York’s Metropolitan Opera after management ordered her to β€œrepudiate her public support” for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Amid a wave of anti-Russian sentiment in the west following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Netrebko is not the only high culture figure left suddenly unemployed.

 

In a statement on Thursday, the iconic opera company said that Netrebko had β€œwithdrawn from her upcoming Met performances” in Puccini’s β€˜Turandot’ and Verdi's β€˜Don Carlo,’ after β€œnot complying” with the firm’s demand that she β€œrepudiate her public support for Vladimir Putin.”

 

Two days earlier, Netrebko made a post on Instagram calling on Russia to end what she called β€œthis senseless war of aggression” in Ukraine, referring to the Russian military’s ongoing military operation to disarm and neutralize Ukraine by force.

 

However, management at the Met wanted the Russian diva to go a step further and personally denounce Putin, with a source telling the Guardian that the company pressured her several times to do so.

 

β€œIt is a great artistic loss for the Met and for opera,” said Met General Manager Peter Gelb. β€œAnna is one of the greatest singers in Met history, but with Putin killing innocent victims in Ukraine, there was no way forward.”

 

Netrebko, who has starred in nearly 200 performances at the Met, will be replaced in β€˜Turandot’ by Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska, while a replacement for her role in β€˜Don Carlo’ has yet to be announced.

 

Netrebko received the People’s Artist of Russia honor from Putin in 2008, and in 2014 donated a million roubles (then $18,500) to rebuild the Donetsk Opera House, which was damaged in fighting between pro-independence and Ukrainian forces. Although Netrebko received some criticism in the west for posing with separatist leaders in Donetsk, she insisted that she had β€œnothing to do with politics.”

 

In addition to the harsh economic sanctions levied on Russia by the US and EU, private firms and organizations have announced their own anti-Russia crackdowns. Amid a flight of western brands from Russia, stores in the US pulled Russian vodka from their shelves, the International Cat Federation banned Russian-bred and Russian-owned cats from its exhibitions, and Russian-owned businesses around the world have been targeted by vandals.

 

Netrebko is not the only icon of Russian high culture to lose her job in this climate. Conductor Valery Gergiev was fired from his job at the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra earlier this week after he refused a request by Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter to β€œclearly and unequivocally distance himself from the brutal war of aggression that Putin is waging against Ukraine.”

 

Gergiev, an associate of Putin, had earlier been declared unwelcome by venues around the world, including New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the Edinburgh Festival.

Glad to know, I’m not alone in my thinking that this is a very legitimate possibility. I’d long given up on the 2 party political system in the US by the time Trump threw his hat in the ring. 2 sides of 1 coin, nesrvas I could tell. And, all I could think about when seeing him give that snake speech was that he was openly mocking the public while fulfilling the β€œyou must tell them” rule of absolution of responsibility in under handed dealings. And, then Q showed up and gave me some hope. So, I’ve cautiously watched and waited for the big reveal that never seems to come. Meanwhile the plant continues to devolve into chaos with family pitted against family, friends of lifetimes abandon each other, derp state wins and wins and wins, while death counts sky rocket the world over. If this is what winning looks like, I think we might need to redefine that term. Hope can be a dangerous thing when weaponized…

That includes the actions of Brian Hodge, a person of interest identified by investigators who has somehow eluded the FBI’s Vegas crosshairs. Even though there is compelling evidence for Hodge, an Australian national living in the United States, to have been questioned. He never was interrogated, FBI sources said.

Hodge left Los Angeles on September 30th for Las vegas and disabled the geo-locating feature on this Twitter account.

 

β€œSomething you do to hide your location,” one FBI source confirmed. β€œThis is a surveillance-avoidance tactic that is taught to bad actors.”

 

FBI insiders said Hodge Tweeted throughout the Mandalay Bay attack with the geo-locating feature on his account disabled, thinking his location would be masked.

 

Then at 2:43 am PST, Hodge Tweeted again from the Vdara Hotel where he had checked into after vacating Mandalay Bay.

But FBI sources said for this post on Twitter, Hodge has turned his geo-locating feature back on.

 

This intrigued investigators. What was Hodge trying to hide? Why else would he flip-flop his geolocation feature on Twitter? FBI sources said Hodge, however, failed to disable the same location feature on his Facebook account.

 

FBI agents have since amassed crucial data from Hodge’s cell phone that help fill in the blanks as to where he was during and after the attack. And it wasn’t where he said he was during numerous media interviews where Hodge maintains he was hiding in the bushes outside Mandalay Bay for three or four hours.

 

FBI agents learned he wasn’t even near the Mandalay Bay.

Approval could come as soon as next week. Lawmakers are also pushing the Biden administration to halt oil imports from Russia, a move that could tighten the vise on the country’s increasingly isolated economy.

 

But Graham is alone in encouraging attempts on Putin’s life. Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, called his comments β€œunacceptable and outrageous.”

 

Graham was unbowed in a Fox News appearance Friday morning, saying that the best way for the fighting to end is to have β€œan Eliot Ness or Wyatt Earp” in Russia, referring to fabled American law enforcement figures.

A box filled with human heads destined for medical research was stolen from a truck used to transport body parts in Denver, and police are currently on the lookout for both the thief and the grisly stolen items.

 

The truck was parked along 23rd Avenue in the city's Central Park neighborhood around 11 am on Thursday morning when someone broke into the truck and took a dolly and a box of human remains, Fox21 News reported.

 

The human heads were in a blue and white cardboard box, about 20 x 15 x 18 inches in size, with the label 'Science Care' scrawled across the sides of it, referring to a body and body part donation program used to to help improve scientific research and education.

 

Authorities said the human heads were en route to be used for medical research. It is unclear if the thief realized what they were stealing, and whether officials will still be able to use the heads if they're recovered, but haven't been kept refridgerated.

 

The heads were stolen from a van parked at this intersection in Denver

 

Local resident Isaac Fields, who moved to the typically-safe and residential neighborhood about three years ago, told the news outlet that takes his dog, Margot, to the dog park where the human heads were stolen nearly every day.

 

'Pretty shocking. I guess I don’t see too many strange things happening around here usually, but you know you never know,' said Fields.

 

'Wow! I would have been so terrified.'

 

'Well, my wife actually does Ph.D. research at the University of Colorado Anschutz,' Fields added.

United 93 Wreckage Photographs and Videos β€œExempt from Disclosure” Nearly 21 Years After 9/11

 

After many denials over the years through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and after a Mandatory Declassification Review case was rejected (for an unclear reason) to get this material, The Black Vault filed a FOIA request to get the β€œphotographs and videos of the wreckage of United Flight 93, taken on or around September 11, 2001” released to the public.

 

That case was filed in December of 2021, and on February 14, 2022, the FBI responded by denying all of the records as being β€œexempt from disclosure.”

After witnessing the devastation in Ukraine and sharing on Twitter that he "walked miles to the Polish border" to safety, Sean Penn sat down for an interview with CNN on Friday evening to appeal to viewers for help.

 

Appearing pale, exhausted and frustrated, theOscar-winning actor, activist and director told Anderson Cooper his nonprofit group, Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE), is doing what it can to assist the people in Ukraine as Russia continues its assault.

 

"We're distributing hygiene kits. We're giving cash assistance and water to refugees as they come through," he said. "We're working now to bring our staff into the other side as well, because you really have two kinds of struggles with the refugees. One is trying to get out of the country, and the other, figuring out what to do."

 

Penn added that many of the refugees that CORE staff encountered had lost everything.

 

"A lot of the people, plenty of them well-to-do, left their jobs and bank accounts behind, and so this is their new reality," he continued. "We need assistance with CORE. We've never been very good at getting on the media front, which is ironic, given that I'm supposed to help do that when it comes to the cash assistance that CORE needs to help people but I definitely want to ask people to help us out."

 

Penn then urged "Anderson Cooper 360" viewers to donate what they can. [Those wanting to help can find details on CORE's website.]

 

The "Mystic River" actor has been filming a documentary for Vice Studios about the Russian invasion, a spokesperson for Vice Studios confirmed to TheWrap last week.

 

Penn told Anderson Cooper he was "impressed and moved" after speaking with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

 

"Meeting with president Zelenskyy the day before the invasion and then meeting with him again on the day of the invasion, I don't know if he knew he was born for this, but it was clear that I was in the presence of something… that was new to the modern world in terms of courage and dignity and love," Penn explained. "This is an extraordinary moment. I was impressed and moved by him and terrified for him and for Ukraine."

when looking at how complex such an amino acid is and how many different ones with different functions exist, it is pretty unlikely that this just happened to end up like this. maybe some folks still consider it possible, given it has to have "mixed together" over very long periods of time. so nature had many time for try and error (basically the main theme of evolution theory).
