Marlee Matlin holds a number of records. She is the youngest person to win the Academy Award for Best Actress (at 21, for Children of a Lesser God). She is the only deaf person to win an Oscar. The $1,000,000 she raised for charity on Celebrity Apprentice is the most ever for any single-event TV show. Oh, and she once told Donald Trump something every woman would like to say to the notorious misogynist: “Now, please stop staring at my tits.”

In January of this year, Matlin made history again. Her new film CODA took home an unprecedented four awards at the virtual—owing to the pandemic—Sundance Film Festival, including the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award, and was quickly snapped up by Apple for a fest-high $25 million.

And CODA, which stands for “child of deaf adults,” is not only a total crowd-pleaser, but will surely garner plenty of Oscars attention.

It had survived the bombing

Marianna, the pregnant girl portrayed in one of the symbolic photos of the Russian-bombed pediatric hospital in Mariupol, has given birth to her baby girl, her name is Veronika. Ukrainian journalist Olga Tokaryuk , who contacted the family, made the announcement on Twitter : "Everything is fine with Marianna and her daughter, but in Mariupol it is very cold and the bombings do not stop".

Marianna, who is a popular blogger in Ukraine, appeared in the media around the world in a photo of her injured, in polka dot pajamas as she walked out of the targeted hospital. Evgeniy Maloletka 's shot for Associated Press then ended up in the crosshairs of the controversies of the Russian media that spoke of a "provocative staging" with "actors as protagonists" in which the girl would have lent herself to wearing different clothes to have the images taken various poses and would also have interpreted another photo that then went around the world, that of the woman on the stretcher in the hospital courtyard.

Just yesterday Twitter blacked out a series of tweets for violation of the rules of use of the platform, including the one circulated by the Russian embassy in London whose aim was to demonstrate that there were no patients in the hospital and which were relaunching Moscow's thesis of a some Ukrainian staging. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the hospital was used as a base by the Azov battalion and that there were no patients inside. In reality , at least 17 people were actually injured in the bombing of the Mariupol hospital, including several hospitalized women.

They are by Maloletka himself, well-known and multi-award-winning Ukrainian freelance photojournalist, also author of the dramatic shots of little Kirill , the images that portray Marianna after the birth of her daughter with her husband Yuri by her side.
