My theory is that these parasites are world destroyers. Once they gain control of a hosts nervous system they convince them to destroy themselves and their children. They do this for every living being on a planet. Once a planet is destroyed via natural causes or weaponry, they travel on meteors/comets until they reach another planet for them to destroy. They can survive on the meteor while in harsh conditions of outer space by entering a cryostasis.
Would make for a good movie plot at least.
