Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in late February, world leaders swiftly enacted policies to support Ukraine and sanction Russia. State and federal officials in the United States recently echoed this sentiment, offering support to displaced Ukrainians.

Pennsylvania Governor Vows Ongoing Support for Ukraine

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf recently announced his ongoing support for Ukraine and vowed he would take action as Governor to support the country. His announcement is particularly meaningful as Pennsylvania is home to more than 122,000 Ukrainians – the second most in any U.S. state.

HARRISBURG, PA (WSKG) – Gov. Tom Wolf wants state lawmakers to do their part to support Ukrainian refugees and condemn the Russian invasion.

At a Monday news conference, Wolf said he supports a bill from two House Democrats that would send at least $2 million in state funds to pay for refugee resettlement efforts, as well as a House Republican effort to add Russia to a list of countries that Pennsylvania could no longer invest public money in.

PENNSYLVANIA — Gov. Tom Wolf has called on two more agencies within Pennsylvania government to divest from any investments connected to Russia, he said in an announcement Thursday, as the invasion of Ukraine and human rights atrocities there continue..

The governor sent letters to both the Pennsylvania State Employees' Retirement System (SERS) and the Public School Employees' Retirement System (PSERS), urging them to make the move. It comes after legislation divesting all of the state government's investment from Russia was already introduced, and after the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board pulled Russian-made products from Fine Wine and Spirits store statewide.

"As the events in Ukraine continue to unfold, I am doing what is within my authority to ensure the commonwealth is disengaging in business with Russia," Gov. Wolf said in a statement. "I strongly urge SERS and PSERS to take immediate action to divest any public pension funds from investments connected to Russia. We must do what is within our power to bring an end to the suffering of the people of Ukraine."

The governor added that he would sign any "clean" legislation that appears on his desk that divests the state from Russian investments, including the bill brought forward in the state legislature by Republican House Majority Leader Kerry Benninghoff.
