AcknowledgmentsThis book began with April Antonellis of the United States National Park Service. April, who oversaw the book’s inception and development, was a delightful partner. She and her team provided invaluable suggestions and guidance. The project was funded and supported by the Organization of American Historians through a public history program managed by Aidan J. Smith in the project’s early days and Paul J. Zwirecki thereafter. Their patient guidance has been unflagging throughout the book’s long gestation. I would also like to thank the group of teachers that participated in a workshop that kicked off the project:Lucas Cane, Annette Collazo, Cathy DeVoy, Leigh Inglehart, and Nathan McAlister. I hope that the book meets their expectations. I must single out Nathan McAlister, an outstanding history teacher who reviewed several drafts of the book. His insightful contributions to its pedagogy have made the book a valuable resource for teachers. In writing Teaching American Indian History with Primary Sources, I consulted several scholars. I benefited greatly from the advice of Ned Blackhawk and Colin G. Calloway, whose vast knowledge and wisdom left their mark on the content of this book. l
