When Barack Obama was elected president, his oldest daughter, Malia Obama, was just ten years old, per Biography. After her time on the "Extant" team, Malia also went on to assist the writers for HBO's "Girls." Most recently, the former president's daughter landed an exciting new role in the world of television. This job will be her first major work since graduating from Harvard.

 

It seems that all of Malia Obama's hard work in the entertainment industry is paying off! In 2022, NBC News reported that the Harvard grad landed a job working with director-producer Donald Glover, who revealed that Malia is "in the writers' room" working on his newest project. According to the outlet, Glover has been developing an Amazon series called "Hive," and he is thrilled to have Malia on the team. "[She is] an amazingly talented person. She's really focused, and she's working really hard," Glover said, adding that Malia's "writing style is great."

 

While some may assume that nepotism played a hand in the eldest Obama daughter's success, this doesn't appear to be the case. Malia has been developing a career in the world of television since she was a teenager, and those who work with her consider her an asset to the team. "Donald always says perspective is important, and people with different perspectives are important for a writers' room. And for sure, she definitely has a unique perspective on everything," Stephen Glover, Donald's brother, told Vanity Fair. "Hive" is reportedly based on a Beyonce-esque character, and currently does not have an official release date — so fans may have to wait a bit to experience Malia's writing style for themselves.

Some people around me have this really putrid breath since the vaccines started rolling out; not like your regular halitosis ass breath either. From their spit during talking it transfers into my mouth and I can feel the infection inside me developing. I get the same nasty breath, with bad stool. Not sure if it's the spike proteins but I think it mainly transfers through spit during talking.

 

I'm on zprotocol, fast regularly while ingesting hydrogen peroxide on empty stomach so it never lasts too long. Just annoying that it keeps coming back everytime someone is talking in my direction. A new financial order will be negotiated in the world, and the West won’t have the main say in it anymore, ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has claimed.

 

The “hellish” sanctions imposed on Russia by the US, EU, and their allies over the conflict in Ukraine have failed to cripple to the country, but are instead “returning to the West like a boomerang,” Medvedev, the former Russian president who is now the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, wrote on Telegram. “This is hurtful for our ‘friends’ in Europe and overseas.”

 

But while the West continues its “fruitless efforts” to restrict Russia, “the world is gradually moving towards a new logic of global economic relations; towards upgrading the financial system,” he said.

 

According to Medvedev, the US and EU have “tarnished their reputation” by blocking the reserves of the Russian central bank. “It is impossible to trust those who freeze the accounts of other states; steal other people’s business assets and personal possessions, compromising the principles of sanctity of private property.”

 

After the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine in late February, the US and EU froze nearly half of Russia’s foreign currency reserves, worth $300 billion. Washington created a special Task Force, KleptoCapture, to oversee the implementation of sanctions against Moscow and seize the assets of individuals and entities who violate them.

 

Confidence in reserve currencies is “fading like the morning mist,” and the prospect of abandoning the dollar and euro in this role does not seem like such an unrealistic prospect anymore, he said. “The era of regional currencies is coming.”

 

Russia said that from March 31, it will only accept payments for gas in rubles from “unfriendly countries,” which include the US and EU, while China and Saudi Arabia have been discussing switching to the yuan in their oil trade.

 

“No matter if they want it or not, they’ll have to negotiate a new financial order,” Medvedev said. “And the decisive voice will then be with those countries that have a strong and advanced economy, healthy public finances and a reliable monetary system. And not with those who endlessly inflate their public debt, issuing more and more pieces of paper into circulation which aren’t backed by national wealth.”

WASHINGTON – Edgar Maddison Welch, 29, of Salisbury, N.C., was sentenced today to four years in prison on charges stemming from an incident in which he carried a loaded AR-15 assault rifle and a revolver into a Northwest Washington pizza restaurant, scattering employees and customers, and fired his assault rifle into a door.

The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips, Andrew Vale, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office, and Peter Newsham, Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

Welch pled guilty on March 24, 2017, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, to a federal charge of interstate transportation of a firearm and ammunition, and a District of Columbia charge of assault with a dangerous weapon. He was sentenced by the Honorable Ketanji Brown Jackson. Following his prison term, Welch will be placed on three years of supervised release. While on supervised release, Welch is to receive a mental health assessment; he also was ordered to stay away from the restaurant while on release. Additionally, he must pay $5,744 in restitution for property damage he caused during the incident.

In sentencing the defendant, the judge declared that “the extent of the recklessness in this case is breathtaking,” adding that it was only through “sheer luck” that no one was injured.

According to the government’s evidence, on Sunday, December 4, 2016, Welch transported three loaded firearms, together with ammunition, from North Carolina to Washington, D.C. The firearms included a 9mm AR-15 assault rifle loaded with approximately 29 rounds of ammunition, a fully-loaded, six-shot, .38-caliber revolver, and a loaded shotgun with additional shotgun shells. He drove directly to the Comet Ping Pong restaurant, in the 5000 block of Connecticut Avenue NW. According to the government’s evidence, Welch was motivated, at least in part, by unfounded rumors concerning a child sex-trafficking ring that supposedly was being perpetrated at the establishment.

Upon arriving at the restaurant, Welch parked his car and armed himself. At about 3 p.m., he marched inside the restaurant, which was occupied by employees and customers, including children. He was carrying the AR-15 assault rifle and the revolver. He was carrying the AR-15 openly, with one hand on the pistol grip, and the other hand on the hand guard around the barrel, such that anyone with an unobstructed view could see the gun.

The customers and employees fled the building. At one point, Welch encountered a locked room and attempted to force open the door, first using a butter knife and then discharging his assault rifle multiple times into the door.

A few minutes later, an unaware employee entered the restaurant, carrying pizza dough. Welch saw the employee and turned toward the worker with the assault rifle, causing the worker to immediately fear he would be shot. The worker fled. Welch was left alone in the restaurant. After spending more than 20 minutes inside, he left his firearms and exited the restaurant unarmed. He was then arrested and has remained in custody ever since. No one was injured.

The assault rifle and revolver were recovered inside the restaurant. A shotgun also was recovered from the defendant’s car, along with a box of shotgun ammunition.

In announcing the sentence, U.S. Attorney Phillips, Assistant Director in Charge Vale, and Chief Newsham commended the work of those who investigated the case from the Metropolitan Police Department and the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force. They also expressed appreciation for the assistance provided by the FBI’s Charlotte Division, which executed search warrants, seized evidence, and conducted interviews. They acknowledged the efforts of those who worked on the case from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, including Victim/Witness Advocates Yvonne Bryant and Karina Hernandez, Paralegal Specialists Chela Okonji and Bianca Evans, and Arvind K. Lal, Chief of the Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section, who assisted with forfeiture issues.

DETECTIVES were last night trying to unravel the circumstances in which a leading university research scientist was found dead at his blood-spattered and apparently ransacked home.

 

The body of Ian Langford, 40, a senior Fellow at the University of East Anglia’s Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment, was discovered on Monday night by police and ambulancemen. The body was naked from the waist down and partly wedged under a chair. It is understood that doors to the terraced house were locked.

A post-mortem examination failed to establish how Dr Langford, who lived alone in the house in Norwich, died.

Dr Langford began working at the university in 1993 after gaining his PhD in childhood leukaemia and infection following a first-class honours degree in environmental sciences. He worked most recently as a senior researcher assessing risk to the environment.

Professor Kerry Turner, director of the centre, said: “We are all very shocked by this appalling news. Ian was without doubt one of Europe’s leading experts on environmental risk, specialising in links between human health and environmental risk. He was known for his work on the effects on health of bathing water and air pollution, for example. He was one of the most brilliant colleagues I have ever had.”

FTW - February 14, 2002 – How many microbiologists does it take to change a light bulb?

Whatever you think the answer may be, change that light bulb soon.

Microbiologists are dropping like flies.

In the five-week period from November 16, 2001 through December 23, 2001, five world-class microbiologists in different parts of the world were reported dead. Four undoubtedly died of "unnatural" causes, while the fifth's death is quite questionable.

In the ten weeks prior to December 12, 2001, two additional microbiologists were killed, and possibly another five. The period also saw the deaths of three Israelis holding high-level positions in either medical research or public health.

On November 16, 2001, Dr. Don C. Wiley, 57, vanished, and his abandoned rental car was found on the Hernando de Soto Bridge outside Memphis, TN.

On December 10, 2001, Dr. David Schwartz, 57, was found murdered in his rural home in Loudon County, Virginia.

On December 12, 2001, Dr. Benito Que was found comatose in the street near the laboratory where he worked at the University of Miami Medical School.

On December 14, 2001, Set Van Nguyen was found dead in the airlock entrance to the walk-in refrigerator in the laboratory he worked at in Victoria State, Australia.

And on December 23, 2001, Dr. Vladimir Pasechnik, 64, was found dead in Wiltshire, England, a village near his home.

Before these deaths, on October 4, 2001, a commercial jetliner traveling from Israel to Novosibirsk, Siberia was shot down over the Black Sea by an "errant" Ukrainian surface-to-air missile, killing all on board. The missile was over 100 miles off-course. Despite early news stories reporting it as a charter, the flight (Air Sibir 1812) was a regularly scheduled flight.

According to several press reports, including a 12/05/01 article by Barry Chamish and one on 1/13/02 by Jim Rarey (both available at www.rense.com), the plane is believed by many in Israel to have had as many as four or five passengers who were microbiologists. Both Israel and Novosibirsk are homes for cutting-edge microbiological research. Novosibirsk is known as the scientific capital of Siberia. There are over 50 research facilities there, and 13 full universities for a population of only 2.5 million people.

At about the time of the Black Sea crash, Israeli journalists had been sounding the alarm that two Israeli microbiologists had been murdered, allegedly by terrorists. On November 24, 2001 a Swissair flight from Berlin to Zurich crashed on its landing approach. 24 of the 33 persons on board were killed, including the head of the Hematology department at Israel's Ichilov Hospital, as well as directors of the Tel Aviv Public Health Department and Hebrew University School of Medicine. They were the only Israelis on the flight. The names of those killed, as reported in a subsequent Israeli news story but not matched to their job titles, were Avishai Berkman, Amiramp Eldor and Yaacov Matzner.

Besides all being microbiologists, the five scientists who died within five weeks of each other pose severe problems with "official" explanations of their deaths. And four of the five were doing virtually identical research; research that has global political and financial significance.

A MEMPHIS MYSTERY

Dr. Don C. Wiley, of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Harvard University, was one of the most prominent microbiologists in the world. He had won many of the field's most prestigious awards, including the 1995 Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award for work that could make anti-viral vaccines a reality. He was heavily involved in research on DNA sequencing, and was last seen at around midnight on November 16, leaving the St. Jude's Children¹s Research Advisory Dinner at The Peabody Hotel in Memphis, TN. Associates attending the dinner said he showed no signs of intoxication, and no one has admitted to drinking with him.

His rented Mitsubishi Galant was found about four hours later, abandoned on a bridge across the Mississippi River, headed towards Arkansas. Keys were in the ignition, the gas tank full, but the hazard flashers had not been turned on. Wiley¹s body was found on December 20, snagged on a tree along the Mississippi River in Vidalia, LA, 300 miles south of Memphis. Until his body was found, Dr. Wiley's death was handled as a "missing person" case and police did no forensic examinations.

Early reports about Wiley's disappearance made no mention of paint marks on his car, or a missing hubcap which turned up in subsequent reports. The type of accident needed to knock off the hubcaps (actually a complete wheel

cover) used on recent model Galants would have caused marked damage to the sheet metal on either side of the wheel, and probably the wheel itself. No body or wheel damage to the car has been reported.

Wiley's car was found about a five minute drive from the hotel where he was last seen. There is a four-hour period in his evening that cannot be accounted for. There is also no explanation as to why he would have been headed into Arkansas late at night. Dr. Wiley was staying at his father¹s home in Memphis.

The death of Lara Prychodko — a wealthy Manhattan woman who died after plunging down her building’s trash chute in 2018 — has long been ruled a bizarre accident.

But her dad has a different theory — claiming in a wild new lawsuit that his daughter’s estranged husband hired a hitman to have her killed.

The Manhattan Supreme Court wrongful death suit — filed Tuesday by Prychodko’s father, Nicholas Prychodko, and financial advisor Lance Meyerowich on behalf of her estate — offers no proof of the claim.

But it alleges that Prychodko’s estranged husband David Schlachet paid someone to off his 48-year-old wife because he stood to lose as much as half of an approximately $6 million fortune upon the couple’s finalization of their contentious divorce.

No criminal charges have been filed against Schlachet in connection to the case.

Prychodko was found dead July 10 in the basement garbage room of her luxury Union Square building, less than a month after she celebrated her birthday in Paris with family and friends.

Cops at the time said she was last seen alive on surveillance video, in which she appeared to be drunk and stumbling about.

A maintenance worker discovered her body “crushed from multiple angles” in the compactor, police have said.

The city Medical Examiner ruled Prychodko’s death an accident in December that year.

Trump’s comments on Putin came as the Russian president has been sanctioned and ostracized by the West for his continued assault on Ukraine. In a clip of the interview, Trump references Baturina, widow of former Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov.

President Biden this week said he wasn’t “walking back” comments that Putin should be removed from power due to the invasion.

“I wasn’t then, nor am I now, articulating a policy change,” Biden said. “I was expressing the moral outrage that I feel and I make no apologies for it.”

Trump ally Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC) had called for the Russian president’s assassination in controversial comments in the early days of the invasion.

The “hellish” sanctions imposed on Russia by the US, EU, and their allies over the conflict in Ukraine have failed to cripple to the country, but are instead “returning to the West like a boomerang,” Medvedev, the former Russian president who is now the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, wrote on Telegram. “This is hurtful for our ‘friends’ in Europe and overseas.”

 

But while the West continues its “fruitless efforts” to restrict Russia, “the world is gradually moving towards a new logic of global economic relations; towards upgrading the financial system,” he said.

 

According to Medvedev, the US and EU have “tarnished their reputation” by blocking the reserves of the Russian central bank. “It is impossible to trust those who freeze the accounts of other states; steal other people’s business assets and personal possessions, compromising the principles of sanctity of private property.”

 

After the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine in late February, the US and EU froze nearly half of Russia’s foreign currency reserves, worth $300 billion. Washington created a special Task Force, KleptoCapture, to oversee the implementation of sanctions against Moscow and seize the assets of individuals and entities who violate them.

 

Confidence in reserve currencies is “fading like the morning mist,” and the prospect of abandoning the dollar and euro in this role does not seem like such an unrealistic prospect anymore, he said. “The era of regional currencies is coming.”

 

Russia said that from March 31, it will only accept payments for gas in rubles from “unfriendly countries,” which include the US and EU, while China and Saudi Arabia have been discussing switching to the yuan in their oil trade.

 

“No matter if they want it or not, they’ll have to negotiate a new financial order,” Medvedev said. “And the decisive voice will then be with those countries that have a strong and advanced economy, healthy public finances and a reliable monetary system. And not with those who endlessly inflate their public debt, issuing more and more pieces of paper into circulation which aren’t backed by national wealth.”

Kremlin reveals details on switching to ruble payments for gas

 

Importers of Russian gas will be allowed time to switch the settlement method

 

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the process of switching to ruble payments for Russian gas export deliveries will take time and won’t begin immediately this week, despite the March 31 deadline set by presidential order.

 

“This process is more drawn out in time for technical reasons,” he told reporters, adding that importers will be allowed time to adjust.

 

Earlier this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the government to take necessary steps to switch all payments for Russian natural gas from “unfriendly” importers to the ruble, starting March 31.

 

The move targets states that are waging economic warfare against Russia by imposing numerous sanctions and freezing the country’s foreign currency reserves, following the launch of the military operation in Ukraine.

 

These will most likely include the US, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, and a number of smaller countries.

Did the Globalists Just Flinch on Russian Sanctions in Order to Keep Control of Global Climate Change Goals?

Something odd is happening in the background of the G7 energy ministers’ announcement earlier today.

 

Remember that moment {HERE} when Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland seemed really uncomfortable and weird at the presser – just 36 hours before the Trudeau administration announced they were going to drop the Emergency Act banking sanctions against the truckers? {Go Deep}

 

Here is an encapsulation of what’s weird, and you don’t have to be an expert in geopolitics and international trade to see it:

 

The G7 countries (including the U.S.) announced today they were demanding that Russia accept payment for oil and gas in euros and dollars. This is happening at the same time NATO is demanding (via sanctions) that Russia be blocked from accepting payments in euros and dollars.

 

Something is weird. Keep in mind, the same nations in the G7 are the same nations in NATO with the exception of Japan (G7 only).

 

The only way this conflict could make any sense, is if the G7 energy ministers realize that forcing Russia to trade in non-euros and non-dollars will structurally undermine the G7 unilateral hold of global finance and energy policy. In essence, the G7 see the non-sanction countries, particularly India and China, lining up to replace the petro-dollar, and that not only weakens their position financially, but it also weakens their climate change position.

 

Saudi Arabia is not returning phone calls from the Biden administration, and the extended OPEC-plus are not following the sanctions regime of the western NATO alliance. Which makes sense, because Opec+ includes Russia, and the geopolitical dynamic appears to have fractured around the energy sector, with the western alliance chasing renewable energy and the non-sanction countries staying on course with oil and gas.

 

The conflicting position toward Russia, insofar as the G7 demands they keep selling using euros/dollars while NATO demands Russia stop receiving euros/dollars, remains brutally stark. It is a conflicting interest, within the same policies, within the same geopolitical group.

 

Behind the G7 and NATO, we know the multinational corporations assembled in the World Economic Forum are ultimately the driver of political policy. The central bankers, finance ministers and politicians all operate under the guidelines of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank (WB) and World Trade Organization (WTO).

 

Together the WEF, IMF, WB, WTO, EU central banks and U.S. federal reserve, collectively represent what we call the globalists. And the globalists are pushing the climate change agenda hard {WEF LINK}.

 

The conflicting position, with G7 energy ministers demanding Russia accept payments in Euros/Dollars, can only be reconciled if the globalist crew is worried about the fracturing we have previously discussed. {Go Deep}

 

However, if the globalist team only just now realized their sanctions have created a cleaving of the world energy trade system using dollars to pay for oil/gas purchases, and by extension this weakens their objective to force everyone to accept climate change objectives, they would be fools.

 

Something weird is going on here. I’m not certain what it is, but I am confident something really odd is again happening in the background.

 

It is always important to remember the ultimate goal of the ‘climate change’ promotors is not an energy system that changes the global climate. The goal of the ‘climate change’ group is to create a carbon trading system; a new financial mechanism (a global tax program) to control human activity on a world-wide basis. This system also needs a digital identity in order to work.

 

As a consequence, when we look at the fracturing of the global energy marketplace, it is worth viewing the divided group through the prism of the globalist carbon trading scheme.

 

My hunch is the demand for Russia to accept payment in euros and dollars is directly connected to the G7 worrying about losing climate change leverage with the non-sanction countries around the issue of energy. For the globalists, it’s not just the loss of the petro-dollar at stake, it’s losing the accompanying leverage they have to enforce their climate change mission.

 

That’s the only thing that makes this internal conflict make sense.

• the refusal to join NATO, fixation of Ukraine's bloc-free status;

 

• the renunciation of nuclear weapon;

 

• an obligation to conduct troop exercises only with the consent of the guarantor states, which must include Russia.

 

That is, Ukraine stated that it’s ready to fulfill these demands that Russia has been insisting on all these years.

 

If all these obligations are fulfilled, the threat of creating a NATO bridgehead on Ukrainian territory will be eliminated.

 

That’s why it’s so important to agree upon this treaty at the highest level.

 

However, the negotiations and our work continue.

Russophobia is the new mainstream – Polish PM

 

Mateusz Morawiecki says it has become an obvious reality in the country. (And they are justifying it, which is the sickness they promote)

 

What was once called Russophobia has now become mainstream in Poland, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said during a press conference on Wednesday.

 

The PM claims that in light of the situation in Ukraine,Poland has set “some standards” when it comes to anti-Russian sentiment.

 

“Ladies and Gentlemen, in the context of this terrible event which is the war in Ukraine, Poland sets some standards, and what was previously called Russophobia is now mainstream, it is already accepted as a reality,” Morawiecki said.

 

The statement came as the PM announced Poland’s decision to cut all Russian energy imports by the end of the year, describing it as “the most radical plan in Europe” and encouraging other EU nations to follow suit.

 

Poland is set to end all Russian oil and gas imports by the end of 2022, and plans to impose a complete embargo on Russian coal in April or May at the latest.

 

The move was announced in light of the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine, as Poland accuses Russia of using its energy resources as blackmail against European nations.

 

The PM has called for the EU to impose a tax on Russian raw materials, arguing that money from oil and gas exports is “fueling Russia’s war machine” and should be stopped.

 

Moscow attacked the neighboring state in late February, following Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements signed in 2014, and Russia’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics in Donetsk and Lugansk. The German and French brokered Minsk Protocol was designed to regularize the status of the regions within the Ukrainian state.

 

Russia has now demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked and has denied claims it was planning to retake the two republics by force.

 

A number of countries around the world have since imposed severe sanctions against Russia. The US, EU, and their allies have cut off the country from their financial systems, limited dollar and euro transactions, and froze roughly $300 billion in Russian forex reserves abroad, among other measures.

 

In response, Russia is now demanding that “unfriendly” European nations pay for gas using rubles – a demand that the G7 countries and other buyers which are still heavily reliant on Russian energy have rejected. Nevertheless,Russia says it will not be giving away gas for free, and has given the countries until March 31 to begin switching to payment in rubles.

Ukrainian ‘nationalists’ used synagogue to store weapons – Russia

 

The Russian Defense Ministry has accused Kiev of spreading “cynical lies” about its military campaign

 

Russia said on Wednesday that Ukrainian fighters were using a synagogue to secretly store weapons and ammunition. Kiev has repeatedly accused Moscow of striking civilian targets, while Russia says it is only hitting sites used by the military.

Major General Igor Konashenkov, Defense Ministry spokesman, accused Kiev of trying to deceive the world with “cynical lies” about Russia’s offensive.

 

He presented a set of images he said was evidence of “nationalists” using a synagogue in the city of Uman, in central Ukraine, “for military purposes.”

 

The spokesman added that Ukrainians planned to use Jewish religious groups to exert pressure on Russia if the synagogue in question had been destroyed.

 

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned the shelling of the city by Russia in his address to Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, on March 20. Tens of thousands of Jews gather in Uman every year for a pilgrimage to a tomb of a local religious leader.

 

The images, according to Konashenkov, were dated March 21 and provided by “a member of Uman’s Jewish community.” They appear to be stills from a CCTV video and show a group of men in fatigues gathering around a truck and two buses parked outside a building, which Konashenkov identified as a synagogue.

 

The truck is loaded with backpacks and objects similar to rolled up cushion foams. Two men cover them up with a bedsheet and a pair of blankets. The men in military-style clothes stand near a white bus with a warning sign on its windshield, which says “Children.”

 

Another set of images, purportedly made at the same location, shows men in helmets and body armor outside a red bus. Some carry large bags and at least two men carry what resembles rifles.

 

Konashenkov said the men belonged to “the two columns of nationalists that were formed on the territory of the synagogue.”

 

The images do not show any of the men entering or leaving the building. Konashenkov, however, claimed that “weapons and ammunition, which were stored inside the synagogue, were first loaded by nationalists onto trucks and later disguised as bags full of construction waste.”

 

Ukraine has so far not commented on the allegations, but Kiev repeatedly accused Russian troops of destroying civilian buildings, including apartment complexes, hospitals and schools. Police and city officials reported that several missiles landed in Uman last month, killing one person.

Interstate 81 reopened early Wednesday morning nearly two days after a 50-60 vehicle pileup in Schuylkill County that left five dead and at least two dozen injured.

The northbound side of I-81 reopened around 1 a.m. between exit 107 to Tremont/Tower City, and exit 119 to Highridge Park Road. This section of highway — in Foster Township — shut down around 10:30 a.m. Monday, when the pileup occurred as a snow squall appeared, causing near white-out conditions.

Crews were still moving damaged vehicles off the highway Tuesday evening, according to Pennsylvania State Police. Trooper David Beohm said construction was necessary after the crash was cleared, but it’s unclear exactly what work needed to be done.

The Schuylkill County Coroner’s Office said three people had died as of mid-afternoon Monday, but the Pottsville Republican Herald reported two additional deaths later that evening, according to fire officials who responded to the crash scene.

Police initially said 24 people were transported to area hospitals with injuries from the crash, while 75 others were bussed to a mass casualty center run by the Red Cross for assistance and reunification with families.

State police have not released an updated number of fatalities and injuries as of Wednesday morning.

Beohm told USA Today that the crashed vehicles formed a blockage Monday morning. From there, every other incoming vehicle had nowhere to go, creating a chain reaction of crashes.

The first state police vehicle to respond was involved in the crash, and the trooper suffered minor injuries, Beohm said.

Another factor in the delay of the crash response was vehicles on fire, including tractor-trailers, according to Beohm. Until the fires were out, crews couldn’t get to parts of the crash scene to provide assistance and clean up.

Beohm said fires were burning until around 6 p.m. Monday, nearly eight hours after the crash started. After going to the scene Tuesday, Beohm told USA Today that the whole road was black from the fire.

Videos from the crash showed motorists evaluating damage off to the side of the road when incoming vehicles slammed directly into stopped vehicles. In some cases, vehicles could be seen being pushed around the road after being hit by oncoming traffic.

Russia says Europe will not get free gas if countries refuse to pay in rubles. “We are not going to supply gas for free, this is clear,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday. When asked whether gas would be turned off for non-payers, Peskov replied: “No payment, no gas.” He added, however, that Russia is yet to make a final decision on how to respond should European countries refuse to pay in the Russian currency.

How much does Europe depend on Russian gas?

Europe depends heavily on Russian gas for heating and power generation. Russian gas accounts for some 40% of Europe’s total consumption. The EU’s gas imports from Russia this year stood between €200 million and €800 million a day.

What happens in Europe without Russian gas?

The European Commission has said it plans to cut EU dependency on Russian gas by two-thirds this year and end its reliance on Russian supplies “well before 2030.” However, economists say it’s not easy to replace the 1,550 terawatt-hours of Russian gas delivered to the EU in 2021. Europe cannot replace the supply shortfall quickly; it will need to curb demand. Meanwhile, increased liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports in an already tight global LNG market would place immense upside pressure on prices. This would be a major hit to the European economy, which is already suffering from sky-high energy prices. A prolonged halt in supply of Russian gas would come at a cost for the EU and might even result in some countries that are more exposed to Russian gas fluctuations, like Italy and Germany, having to take emergency measures. What are the wider implications?

There is a risk of a global energy crisis. Russia is the largest natural gas exporter in the world and the second-largest exporter of crude oil behind Saudi Arabia, according to the International Energy Agency. Replacing Russian gas will not be easy. Europe will have to buy gas on the open market, which means if they buy from countries like Qatar or the US they will have to pay more. It also means that the gas they buy will not go somewhere else. The result will be higher gas prices everywhere as countries outbid each other for limited supplies.

Will oil prices be affected?

Russia supplies around four million barrels of oil per day to the European Union. Unlike gas, the supply of which to a greater extent is still regulated by long-term contracts, the price of oil is volatile and is determined by supply and demand. If Europe still decides to abandon Russian oil, then crude prices could soar to $200 per barrel, or even higher, analysts warn.

Will Russia sell other commodities in rubles?

President Vladimir Putin has hinted during his payment plan announcement that natural gas could be the first Russian commodity to be sold in rubles. If the West imposes further sanctions, it raises the possibility that other Russian export commodities could be priced in rubles, including oil, metals, and grain.

Who will blink first as the payment deadline approaches?

So far, the EU and G7 nations have rejected Russia’s demand to switch their payments for gas to rubles. Russia said it will not provide free gas supplies, suggesting that it is ready to shut off the taps. If that happens Moscow would lose between €200 million to €800 million each day of the embargo. The status of Crimea is settled for Russia, and Moscow will not discuss the issue with Ukraine or any other party, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Wednesday. He was commenting on the outcome of peace talks in Turkey.

 

Kiev’s proposals for a settlement apparently include a pledge to resolve the territorial dispute over the peninsula within 15 years without the use of force.

 

“Crimea is part of the Russian Federation. According to our constitution, we cannot discuss with anyone the fates of Russian territories, the fates of Russian regions. That is out of the question,” the official said.

 

Crimea voted to rejoin Russia in 2014,in a disputed referendum, after a violent Western-backed coup in Kiev overthrew the Ukrainian government. Kiev claims the vote was illegitimate and now refers to Crimea as temporarily occupied Ukrainian territory. Ukrainian officials have said that under no circumstances will they drop the claim over the region.

 

Crimea was part of Russia until 1954, when the Soviet government transferred it to Kiev's control, while both countries were part of a union state.

 

During the peace talks in Istanbul on Tuesday, the Ukrainian delegation delivered to Russia a written proposal for how the armed conflict between the two nations could be resolved. According to Moscow, Ukraine said it was ready to pledge to remain a neutral nation and not to host foreign troops on its soil. Kiev said that in exchange, it wants NATO-like security guarantees from leading world powers, including Russia.

 

Russia’s top negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, said that Ukraine is seeking to include “parts” of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions in the definition of its territory for the purpose of security guarantees, and stressed that Ukraine’s proposals will not necessarily be part of the final document. Moscow recognized the Donbass republics as independent states in February.

 

Peskov said Russia’s top negotiator is due to make additional public statements later in the day about the progress made, which the Russian government considers promising, but still modest.
