Election integrity group sues New Mexico officials over right to publish voter rolls

"We are not going to be deterred by partisan election officials who believe the election records taxpayers pay for are their personal possessions," said Doug Truax, Founder and President of Restoration Action.

Voter Reference Foundation (VRF) is suing the New Mexico secretary of state and attorney general to ensure publication of the state's voter rolls.

The election integrity watchdog filed the First Amendment lawsuit on Monday, asking the U.S. District Court in Albuquerque to assert VRF's right to publish the voter rolls for taxpayers to view.

The lawsuit alleges that Democratic Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver falsely claimed in public statements that VRF illegally published New Mexico's voter rolls. Oliver has a history of refusing to release public voting records, according to the lawsuit, as she previously did so when former President Trump requested them in 2017.

"The taxpayers of New Mexico pay for election administration, and they have an absolute right to view the records that are produced," said Doug Truax, Founder and President of Restoration Action, which started VRF. "Confidence in American elections is at a low ebb, and one reason is a lack of transparency."

Since VRF started in 2021, it has published the voter rolls of 22 states and Washington, D.C. so citizens have "the ability to view who is eligible to vote, when they voted, and other basic election data," according to a press release.

After VRF published the New Mexico voter roll in December, Oliver said it was illegal and referred the matter to Democratic Attorney General Hector Balderas for investigation and possible prosecution, according to a ProPublica article cited in the lawsuit.

"We are not going to be deterred by partisan election officials who believe the election records taxpayers pay for are their personal possessions," Truax added in a statement. "The public has a right to see them and if they try to block us, we will assert that right in court."

The lawsuit claims that the state’s law regarding the publication of voter data violates both the First and Fifth Amendments since it is too vague and broad and "fails to give notice as to what uses are permissible and which are prohibited."

VRF is requesting a declaratory judgment to continue publishing voter rolls and a preliminary and permanent injunction to prevent Oliver and Balderas "from enforcing any statute in violation of Plaintiffs' rights," the lawsuit states.

Pending litigation, VRF will take the New Mexico voter rolls off of its website.

Truax also said that there will likely be litigation in several other states that prohibit the publication of voter rolls.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to address Australian parliament

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will address Australian politicians at 5:30pm AEDT on Thursday, as Russia's war continues to rage through his country.

The Prime Minister and Opposition Leader will each welcome Mr Zelenskyy, before he makes the address via video link.

Parliament will briefly suspend to facilitate the address, and senators will gather in the House of Representatives for the speech.

Mr Zelenskyy has addressed the US Congress, Canadian parliament, British parliament and other parliaments around the world over recent weeks.

He has repeatedly called on supporters of Ukrainian sovereignty to "do more" to help his country resist the Russian invasion.

There had been rumours Mr Zelenskyy would address the Australian parliament during this sitting week, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison saying last week he would "welcome any opportunity for him to speak to the Australian people".

'The enemy has marked me target number one'

In a video shot recently on the streets of Kyiv, Mr Zelenskyy said he feared his life was in danger.

"The enemy has marked me as target number one, my family as target number two," said the President, dressed in khaki and flanked by his officials.

"They want to destroy Ukraine politically by destroying the head of the state."

Several assassination attempts have been made on Mr Zelenskyy, including one allegedly by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov in early March.

Mr Zelenskyy's wife, Olena Zelenska, their 17-year-old daughter Sasha and nine-year-old son Kyrylo, remain in Ukraine in hiding.

"As every woman in Ukraine, now I fear for my husband," Ms Zelenska wrote in a series of messages sent through intermediaries to ABC America.

"Every morning before I call him, I pray everything goes well.

"I also know how strong and enduring he is. He is able to withstand anything."

Earlier this month, Scott Morrison pledged $70 million to buy military equipment and weapons for Ukraine as part of a coordinated Western effort to help its armed forces resist Russia's invasion.

"The overwhelming majority of that [$70 million] will be in the lethal category," Mr Morrison said.

"We are talking missiles, ammunition, we are talking supporting them in their defence of their own homeland in Ukraine."

The government is also putting around $35 million toward humanitarian support to help international organisations responding to Ukrainians fleeing the country and seeking asylum in neighbouring regions.

Freshman Congressman Madison Cawthorn, a North Carolina Republican, is facing calls to reveal more information about his recent claims that fellow lawmakers in Washington have invited him to an orgy and done cocaine in front of him.

On Tuesday, Meghan McCain said on Twitter that the American people "deserve to know" the names of the people that Cawthorn was referring to when he made the controversial remarks in an interview last week.

McCain, a TV personality and daughter of the late John McCain, speculated that those lawmakers are likely MAGA supporters.

"So, Madison Cawthorne [sic] only hangs out with hard core MAGA people in DC…" McCain began. "The American public deserves to know which members of congress are doing cocaine and having orgies because they are unfit for office. Should we all just start guessing the people he's talking about?"

Cawthorn's controversial statements came during an appearance on the Warrior Poet Society podcast, in which he said that the Netflix drama House of Cards was an accurate portrayal of Washington.

"I look at all these people, a lot of them that I've looked up to through my life, I've always paid attention to politics," Cawthorn said. "Then all of the sudden you get invited to, 'Well hey, we're going to have kind of a sexual get-together at one of our homes, you should come.' I'm like, 'What did you just ask me to come to?' And then you realize they are asking you to come to an orgy."

Cawthorn then added that he's watched some of the people leading the national movement against drug addiction "do a key bump of cocaine" right in front of him.

His statements have reportedly angered several of his Republican colleagues, who discussed the issue during a closed-door House GOP conference meeting on Tuesday, which Cawthorn did not attend.

Arkansas Representative Steve Womack was among those who spoke out, telling the group he has received questions from his constituents about the claims, Politico reported. Others in the GOP have reportedly expressed doubt in Cawthorn's allegations.

According to reporters from both CNN and Politico, some lawmakers on Tuesday even joined McCain in wanting Cawthorn to identify the names of those who he claimed have engaged in the inappropriate behaviors.

"There's a desire among fellow Republicans for Cawthorn to identify the colleagues involved to prove the truth of his comments, but that desire to name names could also cause new headaches for a conference that's already faced an array of controversies this Congress," Politico reporter Olivia Beavers wrote on Tuesday.

In response to the ongoing controversy, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has promised to sit down with Cawthorn to discuss his comments.

This is not the first time the 26-year-old and staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump has caused trouble for the GOP. Earlier this month, Cawthorn faced criticism from the party for referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a "thug."

Senator Richard Burr, a fellow North Carolina Republican, said in an interview on Tuesday that Cawthorn has "been an embarrassment at times."

Newsweek reached out to Cawthorn's office for comment but did not hear back in time for publication.

The recently released emails show that on Mar. 17, 2020, a researcher from Wuhan University submitted genetic sequences to the NIH to upload to the SRA. Then, in early June 2020, the researcher requested that the agency remove them. The NIH—which admittedly funded gain-of-function research in Wuhan—initially declined to delete the data. However, when the researcher made the same request in mid-June, with a different rationale for the deletion, the NIH removed the sequences.

Well, IMO, gut health is basically the core of our immune system, and I do believe it can be re-balanced. It's an ecosystem. Anyway, another thing you might wanna think about is just going ahead and taking a round of Ivermectin. How come we Humans are the only mammals that don't need (fairly) routine treatment /prophylaxis against parasites?

My Wife and I did 7 days of 12mg Ivermectin and felt a definite difference. My night time acid reflux disappeared. Not saying it's a panacaea by any means, but it's a smart step IMO. We'll probably do a week of it every 6 months or so just because. Oh yea, and my poops became way better. Formed, no peanut butter-can't-squeeze-the-last-clump-out. Really good poops now! Have not had this many clean wipes since I was young, and didn't change my diet at all.
