How One Priest Turned Putin’s Invasion Into a Holy War

The decade-long effort to wrap Russia’s geopolitical ambitions in faith — specifically, the flowing vestments of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Two days before he launched a bloody invasion of Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin sat alone in front of a camera and delivered a rambling, hour-long address. It outlined the ideological justification for what would ultimately become his “special military action” in Ukraine — an invasion that, as far as Putin was concerned, had more than a little to do with religion.

 

“Ukraine is an inalienable part of our own history, culture and spiritual space,” he said.

 

Two days later, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, spoke to military leaders and published a statement in honor of Defender of the Fatherland Day. The cleric congratulated Putin for his “high and responsible service to the people of Russia,” declared the Russian Orthodox Church has “always striven to make a significant contribution to the patriotic education of compatriots,” and lauded military service as “an active manifestation of evangelical love for neighbors.”

 

This religious ramp-up to war was the culmination of a decade-long effort to wrap Russia’s geopolitical ambitions in faith — specifically, the flowing vestments of the Russian Orthodox Church. Fusing religion, nationalism, a defense of conservative values that likens same-sex marriage to Nazism and a version of history that seeks to define Ukraine and other nearby nations as mere subsets of a greater “Russkiy mir” (Russian world), the partnership of Putin and Kirill laid the ideological and theological groundwork for the current invasion.

 

But as explosions continue to rock Ukraine, some in the church are beginning to resist the religious appeals of Putin and Kirill, pushing back on efforts to recast naked Russian aggression as something that sounds a whole lot like a holy war.

 

The partnership of Putin, 69, and Kirill, 75, began around 2012, when the politician was reelected for a third term. It was then that Putin began embracing the Russian Orthodox Church — not necessarily as a point of personal conversion so much as a mechanism for political gain, something foreign policy experts often call “soft power.”

 

The relationship between the president and the prelate escalated rapidly. Kirill, allegedly a former KGB staffer like Putin, hailed the Russian Federation president’s leadership as a “miracle of God.” Meanwhile, Putin worked to frame Russia as a defender of conservative Christian values, which usually meant opposing abortion, feminism and LGBTQ rights. The pitch proved popular among a broad swath of conservative Christian leaders, including prominent voices within the American religious right: In February 2014, evangelist Franklin Graham offered cautious praise for Putin in an editorial for Decision Magazine, celebrating the Russian president’s decision to back a law barring dissemination of “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations” — a statute which, activists argued, effectively banned children from accessing media that presents LGBTQ identities and relationships in a positive or normalizing light. Graham would travel to Russia the following year, where he met with both Kirill and Putin, and told local media that “millions of Americans would like (Putin) to come and run for president of the United States.”

 

By 2017, Politico was already describing Russia as “the leader of the global Christian Right.”

 

The impact of this religious diplomacy was even greater in eastern European nations that once belonged to the Soviet Union, where the Russian Orthodox Church and its allies still enjoy outsized influence. When Moldova sought stronger ties with Europe, Orthodox clerics operating underneath the Moscow patriarchate campaigned against it, with one bishop telling the New York Times in 2016, “For me, Russia is the guardian of Christian values.” Things were similar in Montenegro, where the Serbian Orthodox Church has a close relationship with the Russian Patriarchate; priests there advocated against the nation’s plans to join NATO, and last year Russian Orthodox leaders lambasted Montenegro’s leaders for supporting “eurointegration.”

Taylor Hawkins’ heart weighed double that of an average man: report

 

Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who died Friday in Colombia, had a heart that weighed double the average for men his age, according to a new report.

 

Forensic experts during an examination found Hawkins’ heart weighed “at least 600 grams,” double the average of 300 to 350 grams (three-quarters of a pound), the Daily Mail reported Sunday.

 

Hawkins, 50, was found dead Friday in a hotel room at the Four Seasons Casa Medina in Bogota. In his room, multiple drugs were found, according to a report that cited Colombian authorities.

 

“Colombian authorities found: marijuana, antidepressants, opioids, heroine [sic]. At least 10 different substances found,” journalist Luis Carlos Velez tweeted Saturday afternoon, citing Fiscalia Colombia, the national attorney general’s office.

 

Velez initially reported that Hawkins, a California native, had overdosed, but later backtracked in a follow-up tweet.

 

“Colombian authorities press release confirming 10 substances found #TaylorHawkins – Official release does not say overdose. Investigation continues,” he wrote.

 

Hawkins died of a cardiovascular collapse, the Daily Mail reported Sunday morning, citing Colombian news magazine Semana.

Split between Ukrainian, Russian churches shows political importance of Orthodox Christianity

The recent decision by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to split from its Russian counterpart after more than 300 years of being linked reflects not only the continuing military conflict between the two countries in recent years, but also the important political role Orthodox Christianity plays in the region.

 

Ukraine is an overwhelmingly Orthodox Christian nation, with nearly eight-in-ten adults (78%) identifying as Orthodox (compared with 71% in Russia), according to a 2015 Pew Research Center survey of much of the country (some contested areas in eastern Ukraine were not surveyed). This is up from 39% who said they were Orthodox Christian in 1991 – the year the officially atheist Soviet Union collapsed and Ukraine gained its independence. With roughly 35 million Orthodox Christians, Ukraine now has the third-largest Orthodox population in the world, after Russia and Ethiopia.

 

In addition, Orthodox Christianity is closely tied to Ukraine’s national and political life. Roughly half of all Ukrainians (51%) say it is at least somewhat important for someone to be Orthodox to be truly Ukrainian. The same is true for Russia, where 57% say being Orthodox is important to being truly Russian. In both countries, about half (48% in each) say religious leaders have at least some influence in political matters, although most Ukrainians (61%) and roughly half of Russians (52%) would prefer if this were not the case.

 

The split between the Orthodox churches in the two countries is part and parcel of a wider history of political tensions between Russia’s geopolitical ambitions in the region and Ukraine’s resistance to them – even as some other predominantly Orthodox countries in Eastern Europe look toward Russian for political and religious leadership. For example, majorities of Orthodox Christians in countries such as Serbia (77%) and Georgia (62%) say Russia has an obligation to protect Orthodox Christians outside its borders, but fewer Orthodox Ukrainians (41%) feel this way.

 

Indeed, even though the survey was conducted in 2015 – while the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was still under the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church – a plurality of Orthodox Ukrainians (46%) said they looked to the leaders of the Ukrainian national church (either the patriarch of Kiev or the metropolitan of Kiev and all of Ukraine) as the highest authority of Orthodoxy. Just 17% saw the patriarch of Moscow (currently Kirill I) as their spiritual leader, and an even smaller share (7%) said they looked to the ecumenical patriarch of Constantinople (currently Bartholomew I) for leadership, even though he is technically the foremost leader of the world’s roughly 300 million Orthodox Christians.

 

But attitudes in Ukraine toward Russia’s political and religious leadership are also highly divided between the eastern and western parts of the country. Eastern Ukrainians have more positive attitudes toward Russia than do western Ukrainians. For example, the 2015 survey found that over half of those living in the east (55%) say Russia has an obligation to protect Orthodox Christians living outside its borders. In western Ukraine, meanwhile, a majority (58%) disagree with this view. The patriarch of Moscow also receives higher support in eastern Ukraine than in western Ukraine. Western Ukrainians are more likely to look to their own national patriarchs as the highest authority of the Orthodox Church.

 

Due to fighting in eastern Ukraine between pro-Russian forces and the Ukrainian government, the 2015 survey used in this analysis covered only 80% of the country’s population and excluded the southernmost province of Crimea (which Russia annexed in 2014), as well as the eastern provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk. Given ongoing geopolitical tensions between the two countries, western Ukrainian attitudes toward Russia are not likely to have improved since 2015. But support for Russia in eastern Ukraine may have been somewhat higher had we been able to survey the contested provinces of the country.

The letter asks why the 2018 Trump administration 'China Initiative' - which was designed to identify and prosecute people hacking, stealing trade secrets, and conducting economic espionage for China within the US, according to Just the News.

 

"On Feb. 23, 2022, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced it was effectively ending the China Initiative and implementing a new 'Strategy for Countering Nation-State Threats,' which will subsume the China Initiative's work in addition to efforts related to countries such as Russia, Iran, and North Korea," reads the Thursday letter.

 

In a speech announcing the termination of the China Initiative, Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen of the Justice Department's National Security Division said that while China "stands apart" as a "brazen" espionage threat, a "broader approach" is needed to confront threats from a "variety" of countries. Olsen called this effort a "strategy for countering nation-state threats."

 

Republican senators expressed concern that the new approach is ill-defined and therefore may not be effective at specifically combating nefarious activities conducted by the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP). -JtN

 

"In light of the continuing national security threat posed by the CCP, and the lack of clarity surrounding DOJ's new 'Strategy for Countering Nation-State Threats,' we write seeking clarity with respect to the changes in DOJ's approach," reads the letter. I hope you are all doing well. I realize at this point when you see an email from Audit The Vote PA you're probably as excited as you are about getting a colonoscopy, but nevertheless, here we are AGAIN.

 

Attached you will find a link to a press release that went out this morning at 9am detailing our canvassing results from 10 different counties.

 

I am reaching out to the entire General Assembly to request a legislative hearing in order to present our canvassing results and other findings that we have discovered over the last 17 months. I realize you had hearings in February and March of 2021, but most of what we have found has come from our citizen led investigation efforts that occurred after those hearings were completed and as tax paying, property owning citizens of the Commonwealth, I feel you are obligated to grant us this request.

 

This issue goes far beyond party lines. In fact, during our canvassing efforts we were thanked by both Democrats and Republicans at the door who recognized that the controversy surrounding the 2020 election affects all Americans, and they were very thankful that there are people on the ground trying to do something about it. I even had citizens who we canvassed tell me they are very concerned about President Trump running again in 2024 and that they voted in 2020 to get him out of office. Those same people thanked me for my efforts on the ground.

 

We also released a Decertify Petition earlier in the month, which now has over 13,000 signatures on it from people across the Commonwealth. Something went seriously wrong in 2020 and to date no legislative reform has been passed to address it. I would argue that is because the proposed legislative reform was incredibly flawed, and therefore a hearing to present our findings could aid in that process.

 

I look forward to hearing back from either Representative Grove or someone else who is in a position who can grant us our request.

Record Pentagon Budget Includes $6.9BN For European Deterrence Initiative & $682M To Assist Ukraine

 

Rebuffing progressive lawmakers' calls for Pentagon spending cuts, President Joe Biden on Monday is set to unveil a budget blueprint for the next fiscal year that includes a record $813.3 billion in funds for the U.S. military apparatus, a $31 billion increase from the current level.

 

"We're being robbed of resources to feed the endless hunger of the military-industrial complex."

 

The president's Fiscal Year 2023 budget request, which must be approved by Congress, is expected to contain $773 billion for the Pentagon alone as well as billions in funding for the Energy Department's maintenance of the country's nuclear arsenal.

 

The New York Times reported Monday that Biden's funding request for the Pentagon—the only federal agency that has not passed an independent audit—will "include $4.1 billion to conduct research and develop defense capabilities, nearly $5 billion for a space-based missile warning system to detect global threats, and nearly $2 billion for a missile defense interceptor."

 

According to Bloomberg, the White House is urging Congress to approve $145.9 billion for procurement, funding that will allow the military to purchase "61 F-35 jet fighters from Lockheed Martin Corp., fewer than previously planned, as well as… the B-21 bomber from Northrop Grumman Corp. and two Virginia-class submarines from General Dynamics Corp. and Huntington Ingalls Industries Corp."

 

The president's latest budget proposal will land on Capitol Hill amid Russia's deadly invasion of Ukraine, which has thus far proven to be a major boon for the U.S. weapons industry as the Biden administration pours arms into the besieged country.

 

"The hawks in Washington want to jack up the military budget and use Ukraine as an excuse," William Hartung, a senior research fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, argued in a recent interview on Democracy Now!, noting that Biden's new military budget request amounts to $100 billion more than was spent at the height of the Cold War, adjusted for inflation.

 

Such a massive military budget increase, Hartung warned, "is only going to benefit weapons contractors and members of Congress who receive campaign contributions from them."

 

In a statement on Monday, Hartung said that "spending to address the Ukraine crisis can be more than readily accommodated under current Pentagon spending levels."

The Holy Synod, the governing body of the Russian Orthodox Church, has ruled that any further clerical relations with Constantinople are impossible, Metropolitan Hilarion, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church’s External Relations Department, told journalists, de facto announcing the breach of relations between the two churches.

“A decision about the full break of relations with the Constantinople Patriarchate has been taken at a Synod meeting” that is currently been held in the Belarusian capital of Minsk, Hilarion said, as cited by TASS.

 

The move comes days after the Synod of the Constantinople Patriarchate decided to eventually grant the so-called autocephaly to two previously unrecognized branches of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, thus legitimizing the two clerical organizations.

 

The Moscow Patriarchate also said that it would not abide by any decisions taken by Constantinople and related to the status of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. “All these decisions are unlawful and canonically void,” Hilarion said, adding that “the Russian Orthodox Church does not recognize these decisions and will not follow them.”

 

At the same time, the Russian Church expressed its hope that “a common sense will prevail” and Constantinople will change its decision. However, it still accused the Ecumenical Patriarch of initiating the “schism.”

Schism of Orthodoxy in Ukraine deepens as Constantinople greenlights independent church

This religious movement led by the former Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, who is now called Patriarch Filaret in Ukraine, has sought to gain the status of an independent Orthodox Church, “equal” to the Moscow Patriarchate, since 1990s. Meanwhile, it did not hesitate to seize Moscow Patriarchate’s churches by force.

 

In its October decision, the Holy Synod of the Constantinople Patriarchate “canonically reinstated” Filaret and his followers “to their hierarchical or priestly rank” and restored their communion with the Church, thus effectively declaring that it does not see them as schismatic. This particular move also provoked angry reaction in the Moscow Patriarchate.

 

“A schism remains a schism. And the leaders of a schism remain as such,” Hilarion said, adding that “a Church that recognized schismatic [priests] and entered into communion with them … excluded itself from the canonical field of the Orthodox Church.”

 

He also named restitution of Filaret’s and his followers’ hierarchical or priestly ranks as one of the major reasons behind the Russian Orthodox Church Holy Synod’s decision to break all ties with Constantinople.

 

According to TASS, 40 churches have been forcefully seized by the Kiev Patriarchate between 2014 and 2016. In the first half of 2018 alone, Ukraine witnessed 10 new attacks on Russian Orthodox Churches. Now, as Constantinople is launched a procedure of granting independence to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, such attacks might further intensify, some experts warn.

Study finds more screen time for children linked to behavioral problems

 

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association for Psychiatry found a link between a greater amount of screen time for children and behavioral problems.

 

The study from a research team at the University of Calgary looked at dozens of scientific studies to arrive at the conclusion that more screen time may lead to harmful behavior.

 

For children under 12 years of age, the study said there was a "small but statistically significant" link between screen time and the internalization of anxiety or depression, the externalization of aggression, inattention, and showing defiance.

 

"There’s a signal there. We’re seeing some association between screen time and behavior problems. It’s not particularly robust, but it’s there," said Dr. Sheri Madigan, a senior author of the paper at the University of Calgary.

 

She went on to point out that child development is "really multi-determined" and can involve numerous environmental factors like socioeconomic status and parenting styles.

 

The meta-study involved a review of results from over 160,000 children under the age of 12. For those children who were allowed more screen time, the study said they were 11% more likely to externalize behavioral problems like aggression or inattention. They were also 7% more likely to internalize problems like anxiety and depression.

 

Madigan also said there appeared to be a difference in how screen time affects boys and girls.

 

"Essentially we found larger associations between screen time and externalizing problems in boys, relative to girls," Madigan explained.

 

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry says that children in the U.S. aged between 8 and 12 spend 4 to 6 hours per day in front of a screen.

 

The researchers noted that the studies were conducted before the pandemic when screen time among children skyrocketed because of schools shutting down in favor of online learning.

Pfizer Board Member: Mask Mandate on Airlines Will Be Lifted Soon

 

Former Food and Drug Administration (FDA) chief and current Pfizer board member Dr. Scott Gottlieb is predicting that the federal mask mandate for airlines and other public transportation will be lifted in April if there’s no surge in COVID-19 cases.

 

Gottlieb, who led the FDA between 2017 and 2019, said he believes the Biden administration’s mask mandate for mass transit will be allowed to expire on April 18.

 

“If we’re not in the thick of another wave of BA.2 infection in the middle of April, I think they will go ahead and lift that,” Gottlieb told CNBC in a recent interview. “I think the uncertainty around that is we are starting to see infections start to creep up. If it kind of levels off in the next couple of weeks, which it may, I think the administration will go ahead and lift that.”

 

“My view was that they should lift that requirement on airlines,” he said.

 

The mandate should be lifted if the BA.2 Omicron subvariant of COVID-19 isn’t surging across the United States, he said.

 

But should infections rise in April, it’s likely the mandate won’t be lifted, the Trump-era FDA chief said.

 

“If we’re actually seeing a wave of infection—we’re unclear how large it’s going to be—I think it’s very hard to lift it in that kind of a backdrop, so you’d probably extend it a month,” Gottlieb said.

 

Major airline CEOs recently called on President Joe Biden to drop the mask mandate for airports and planes, according to an open letter that was issued earlier in March.

 

“Now is the time for the Administration to sunset federal transportation travel restrictions,” the letter reads.

 

It was signed by chief executives from American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and several others.

 

“It is critical to recognize that the burden of enforcing both the mask and predeparture testing requirements has fallen on our employees for two years now,” the letter states. “This is not a function they are trained to perform and subjects them to daily challenges by frustrated customers. This in turn takes a toll on their own well-being.”

 

Adding more pressure on the White House, nine flight attendants recently filed a lawsuit against the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health and Human Services in a bid to block the mask mandate.

 

The nine plaintiffs—who work for Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines—wrote that the mandates cause “chaos in the sky” and made note of “thousands of reports” sent to the Federal Aviation Administration for “‘unruly’ passenger behavior” over about the past year.

IRS gave $64 million in stimulus checks to dead people: report

 

In total, computer programming errors caused the erroneous issue of more than $100 million.

 

The Internal Revenue Service sent $64 million in erroneous payments to as part of the American Rescue Plan due to a computer error of which the agency was aware but did not fix, according to an inspector general report.

 

Nearly 45,000 payments totaling $64 million were sent to people for their deceased dependents, who died before Jan. 1, 2021, making them ineligible for Biden's stimulus payments of up to $1,400.

 

"We alerted the IRS to this programming error in April 2021. IRS management agreed that these payments were issued erroneously. However, IRS management did not provide their corrective action to address future erroneous payments," the treasury inspector general stated in a report released last week.

 

The IRS went on to issue more than 400 additional incorrect payments for those with a deceased dependent after being alerted to the issue, the watchdog said.

 

In total, more than $100 million was incorrectly issued due to computer programming errors up to September 2021, the inspector general stated.

 

IG estimates show $1.9 billion was was erroneously paid to more than one million people. More than half a billion of that went to over 300,000 "potential ineligible nonresidents."

 

The IRS agreed that there was an issue with all except about 130,000 of the payments. The agency then "implemented programming changes," according to the inspector general's report.

 

A previous watchdog report found early pandemic payments had even more problems, but slightly less money was went to nonresidents. In July 2020, $3.5 billion was given to nearly 2.2 million people who were deceased. More than $440 million was given to over 320,000 nonresidents at that time.

 

In total, by July 2020, more than 4.4 million people incorrectly received $5.5 billion, according to the inspector general.

 

Biden has faced accusations of covering up pandemic fraud.

 

"Last year, when congressional Democrats rammed through the partisan $1.9 trillion so-called COVID stimulus, which drove inflation, by the way, in a major way, our colleagues rejected numerous Republican amendments that would have targeted relief and prevented fraud," Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, said last month.

 

"Now, the Biden administration has taken unilateral action to sweep suspected fraud under the rug, allowing states to waive large numbers of suspicious claims and forego recovery and restitution for taxpayers," the Texas Republican said.

Grohl and his fellow bandmates warm to the mansion, but Grohl is facing writer's block. One of their tech helps, Krug, is electrocuted by a wire and the band decides to dedicate their album to him. Grohl finds a basement containing satanic objects and is possessed by the deceased frontman after listening to a demo tape. Under the demon's control, Grohl forces the band to continue production on the album. Later, a delivery man named Darren, who had earlier tried to give Grohl a demo tape, is decapitated outside the manor by an unknown figure with hedge clippers. The next day, as guitarist Chris Shiflett is cooking on the grill, the same figure pushes his face onto it. As Chris attempts to escape, he has his head smashed with the grill cover and is stabbed repeatedly in the neck, before the figure is revealed to be Grohl.

 

The band later finds the corpse of Darren, but Grohl convinces them not to call the police and takes their phones. After watching Grohl eat Chris, the band members soon learn of the mansion's backstory and Grohl's possession with the help of a neighbor, Samantha. To exorcise Grohl, they need to find a book needed to free him of the possession. As Samantha and Rami Jaffee have sex, they are both killed when Grohl sneaks under the bed and drives a chainsaw through their heads, before cutting them in half. Drummer Taylor Hawkins is pressured by Grohl to finish the song while Nate Mendel and Pat Smear retrieve the book from the basement. Taylor finishes the song and is partially decapitated by Grohl with a cymbal.

 

The two are successful in freeing Grohl from the possession and the souls of the deceased Dream Widow band members send the demon to Hell. However, Jeremy and real estate developer Barb Weems ambush the remaining members, revealing that they planned the whole thing. While Smear is fixing a car from underneath, Mendel is stabbed in the eye, causing him to accidentally hit the gas, which runs over Smear's head and runs over Barb. As Mendel gets out of the car to help Barb, she stabs him through the chin and dies alongside him. Grohl battles Jeremy only to back down in horror when Jeremy tells him of the album's success and the start of his solo career.

 

One year later, Grohl, the only Foo Fighter left, prepares for his first performance as a solo artist. The films ends as he shows signs of demonic possession.

A new report by John Lott, Jr. at the journal Public Choices reveals Joe Biden received more than 250,000 excess votes for president in the 2020 election.

 

Lott says there were 255,000 excess votes and possibly as many as 368,000 for Biden in the key states.

 

The Washington Examiner reported:

 

A new deep dive into discrepancies in the ballot counts of six key battleground states in the 2020 election has turned up more than 250,000 “excess votes” for President Joe Biden, and maybe far more.

 

The key point in the upcoming peer-reviewed study for the journal Public Choice by economist and noted gun expert John Lott Jr. is that the excess voting may challenge — or explain — Biden’s margin of victory over former President Donald Trump in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

 

In his report, on the Public Choice website but still awaiting final approval, Lott said that there were 255,000 excess votes and possibly as many as 368,000 for Biden in the key states.

 

And in a review of his statistical study he provided to RealClearPolitics, he said that “Biden only carried these states — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — by a total of 313,253 votes. Excluding Michigan, the gap was 159,065.”

 

Lott, who runs the Crime Prevention Research Center, said that his report was not meant to overturn the 2020 election but to reinforce the need for changes to voter identification, absentee voting, and provisional ballots.

 

“The point of this work isn’t to contest the 2020 election, but to point out that we have a real problem that needs to be dealt with. Americans must have confidence in future elections,” he wrote.

 

In the study, Lott reviewed voter registration rolls, actual in-person vote counts, absentee voting, and provisional ballots in counties where fraud has been alleged or suggested. He compared those counts to neighboring counties, arguing that the percentages should be similar.
