MOSCOW. March 31 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he has signed a decree on transitioning to payments for natural gas in rubles for unfriendly countries when opening a meeting on the development of the aviation sector.
Buyers of Russian gas will need to open ruble accounts in Russian banks in order to pay for supplies after April 1, Putin said. The blocking of Central Bank assets by the United States and the European Union creates a threat to currency revenue from gas exports, he said.
"Existing contracts for the supply of gas will be discontinued if buyers from unfriendly countries do not comply with the new payments terms," Putin said.
Gazprom's contracts with European counterparties for both transport and gas supply have been updated and supplemented dozens of times over the years of cooperation. Both negotiations and changes in the European regulatory framework have served as the basis for such reviews.
Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that the system for gas payments in rubles will be "simple, clear, transparent, and doable for respected European and international buyers." The new payment rules will not go into effect until March 31, as "payment and supply are a lengthy process," Peskov said.
