"Biden’s private army and the militarization of American politics"

"The deployment of military psychological warfare technology to defeat President Trump has taken on added meaning since the Washington Post first reported it last May.

 

Now, prominent counterinsurgency practitioners from the Global War on Terror are calling on the American military leadership to overthrow the president if the results of the upcoming election are inconclusive or in dispute.

 

For months the Biden camp has been using militarized rhetoric to suggest that President Trump is bent on electoral fraud and subverting the Constitution to keep himself in power.

 

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi went to the ultimate extreme by calling the president and his supporters in Congress “domestic enemies” and “enemies of the state.”

 

At the same time the Biden operation has underplayed the organized violence of Antifa, which does advocate the overthrow of the Constitution. This raises questions about whether the Democrats are using the Antifa/BLM extremists as tactical allies to oust Trump by any means necessary.

 

Let’s unpack these elements and examine each piece.

 

Element 1: Deploy counterinsurgency technology against the public

Last spring, a pro-Biden political action committee adapted a counterinsurgency technology designed for waging psychological warfare against ISIS, and deployed it against citizen supporters of President Trump.

 

“A new Democratic-aligned political action committee advised by retired Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the former head of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, is planning to deploy technology originally developed to counter Islamic State propaganda in service of a domestic political goal,” the Washington Post reported on May 1.

 

“The group, Defeat Disinfo, will use artificial intelligence and network analysis to map discussion of the president’s claims on social media. It will seek to intervene by identifying the most popular counter-narratives and boosting them through a network of more than 3.4 million influencers across the country — in some cases paying users with large followings to take sides against the president,” the Post said.

 

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) developed the psychological warfare technology for use against terrorists. Former DARPA consultant Curtis Hougland started Defeat Disinfo as a political action committee. He adapted an unclassified, open-source version of the DARPA technology to blame President Trump for the pandemic from China, and accuse him of pushing policies that kill American citizens. “People are dying as a result of his political agenda,” Houghland said on announcing the project.

 

By blaming Trump and not even mentioning China, Defeat Disinfo’s operations coincide with Beijing’s campaign in the US to deflect criticism away from the Chinese Communist Party and toward the Trump administration.

 

Defeat Disinfo’s central theme has been to attack what it calls Trump’s “disinformation” about the coronavirus pandemic and to push the Russia collusion conspiracy theory. “Trump’s lies about Joe Biden & Covid-19 threaten our society,” it says on its homepage. “Republicans and Russians weaponize these lies to divide the nation.” The PAC is open about politicizing the pandemic, saying that “while we target Republicans along Trump’s campaign trail with our ‘COVID Safe Communities’ campaign, we will also push for the high turnout we need among Democratic voters.”

 

DARPA, which pioneered early versions of today’s commercial high-tech, including the Internet and the cell phone, says it has nothing to do with Defeat Disinfo or the political use of the technology, which is now publicly available. It distanced itself from Defeat Disinfo and Houghland, a former DARPA consultant."…..

Use and abuse of this psychological warfare technology against the American public isn’t an independent rogue operation. It is part of something much bigger. For months, Biden has been saying that Trump will steal the election and might have to be removed from the Oval Office by military force. They are insights into a 2020 Democrat campaign strategy of total war. The political opponent is now a military enemy.

 

Element 2: Militarily overthrow President Trump

 

The second element is a strategy based on military counterinsurgency methods developed in Iraq. Two former lieutenant colonels revealed the strategy in an August 11 open letter to General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

 

The strategy is premised on rejection of the possibility that the American people ever would re-elect President Trump. Under this reasoning, Trump can only win through fraud and force. Therefore, American military leaders must overthrow Trump at a given date and time: January 20, 2021, at 12:01 AM. (That’s actually 12 hours before the end of Trump’s first term.)

 

This is not a political “scenario” or “discussion.” It’s a real plan.

 

The former Army officers, John Nagl and Paul Yingling, aren’t warning about someone else’s plan. They’re pushing their own. They told General Milley, “If Donald Trump refuses to leave office at the expiration of his constitutional term, the United States military must remove him by force, and you must give that order.”

 

The pair are far from obscure cranks. Nagl, a West Point graduate, is a prominent military theorist who served in Iraq under General David Petraeus and on the Defense Policy Board advising Trump’s first defense secretary, retired Gen. Jim Mattis. A former president of the Center for a New American Security, an Obama holdover think tank, Nagl is a prolific writer and counterinsurgency theoretician with a large mainstream following in the military and counterterrorism field. Yingling, who sees counterinsurgency differently from Nagl, has been a harsh critic of generals who failed to anticipate an insurgency against US forces in Iraq. He once served under the general who became Trump’s second national security adviser, H. R. McMaster.

 

“Due to a dangerous confluence of circumstances, the once-unthinkable scenario of authoritarian rule in the United States is now a very real possibility,” Nagl and Yingling said in their letter, published in DefenseOne.com.

 

A Trump dictatorship, they said, is almost inevitable because “Trump faces near certain electoral defeat” and “is vigorously undermining public confidence in our elections.” Trump, they argue, won’t accept defeat because he’s certain to “face criminal prosecution.” He’s “assembling a private army capable of thwarting not only the will of the electorate but also the capacities of ordinary law enforcement,” they said; “When these forces collide on January 20, 2021, the US military will be the only institution capable of upholding our Constitutional order.”….

The narrative suddenly went mainstream.

 

Convinced of the impossibility of a legitimate Trump victory, Nagl and Yingling told Milley, as if as a fact, that the “Democrat-led House of Representatives will certify the Electoral College results, which Mr. Trump will dismiss as fake news.” Then a legal battle will begin in the courts, dragging on for months, “producing reasoned rulings that Trump will alternately appeal and ignore.”

 

Again: This is not a hypothetical gaming scenario for discussion. It’s a real plan.

 

The former lieutenant colonels then unveiled the progressives’ coup d’etat: “Then the clock will strike 12:01 AM, January 20, 2021, and Donald Trump will be sitting in the Oval Office. The street protests will inevitably swell outside the White House, and the ranks of Trump’s private army will grow inside its grounds. The speaker of the House [Pelosi] will declare the Trump presidency is at an end, and direct the Secret Service and Federal Marshals to remove Trump from the premises.”

 

Apparently Nagl and Yingling see Pelosi making herself interim president under the Presidential Succession Act, because she as a legislator would have no authority to direct the Secret Service or Marshals of the executive branch to do anything. “These agents will realize that they are outmanned and outgunned by Trump’s private army,” Nagl and Yingling told Milley, “and the moment of decision will arrive.”

 

The counterinsurgents-turned-coup-plotters see only “two options” to stop the “Constitutional crisis.” Either “US military forces escort the former president [Trump] from the White House grounds” – echoing a Biden comment from June and hinting that “a brigade of the 82nd Airborne” would do the job – or “the US military remains inert while the Constitution dies.”

 

The former officers then informed Milley, “your duty is to give unambiguous orders directing US military forces to support the Constitutional transfer of power” – i.e., oust President Trump under Nancy Pelosi’s orders. If Milley is silent, they say, “you will be complicit in a coup d’etat.”

 

This warped logic means that the if the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff doesn’t actively overthrow an unofficially re-elected President Trump while the issue is left for the judiciary to decide, he will be guilty of passively overthrowing either an unofficially-elected President Biden (or Harris), or a self-declared interim President Pelosi.

 

Milley didn’t take the bait. Responding to congressional Democrats who expressed concern about the Nagl-Yingling scenario, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs pledged to keep the military apolitical and leave such a decision to proper civilian authorities."….

The third element of the militarization of American politics is the apparent exploitation of violent extremists as tactical allies to intimidate and terrorize the public in the months and weeks leading up to the election, and possibly beyond Inauguration Day.

 

Antifa and its confederates are not Democrats. They are anarchist-communists. They are not interested in Joe Biden or elections. Their goal is to overthrow the United States Constitution.

 

But to the Trojan Horse Biden team, they could be tactical allies in a common short-term fight to oust Trump, make the country ungovernable, or provoke a constitutional crisis.

 

Counterinsurgency veterans are familiar with making tactical alliances with mortal enemies to pit one violent extremist faction against another for short-term military gain. Just as dehumanizing a military enemy to make him easier to kill, the key for the entire Biden-Harris battle is to dehumanize Trump and his allies. Not as political opponents to be defeated democratically, but as enemies to be destroyed.

 

In their letter to Milley, Nagl and Yingling appeared to envision armed clashes between federal agents who refuse to overthrow Trump and the Antifa/BLM mobs – what the sub-colonels call “extralegal violence between Trump’s private army and street protesters.” They even name the precise location: “Black Lives Matter Plaza,” the two-block length of 16th Street on the north side of Lafayette Park across from the White House.

 

The mayor of Washington DC has kept that area cordoned off and fortified with concrete barriers for months. It is an ideal staging area for many thousands. Union buildings, offices, a historic hotel, and a church there remain boarded up. Perhaps for good reason: “Black Lives Matter Plaza,” Nagl and Yingling write, “becomes Tahrir Square.”

 

Tahrir Square is a large plaza and traffic intersection in Cairo, the locus of the 2011 Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood-led grassroots revolution, backed by the Obama Administration, to overthrow President Hosni Mubarak and install an Islamist regime.

 

As the #2 member of the Obama team, Biden supported the policy of aligning the US with the Muslim Brotherhood. So the mention of Tahrir Square to Milley can be interpreted as an indicator, not a metaphor.

 

Nagl and Yingling then give Milley the Antifa “peaceful protester” line. The general was, they say, culpable for supporting the repulsion of Antifa’s attempts to destroy public historic monuments and buildings between the White House and the so-called Black Lives Matter Plaza. “You were rightly criticized for your prior active complicity in the president’s use of force against peaceful protesters in Lafayette Square,” they said. “Your passive complicity in an extralegal seizure of political power would be far worse.”

 

A tactical alliance between the Democrats and Antifa/BLM could help explain why Biden, Kamala Harris, Pelosi, and others would not denounce the Antifa rioting in Portland for more than three months, and why they still will not denounce Antifa by name.

 

As of this writing, Biden passively denounced Antifa once, as far as we know, but it was in response to a question and he still didn’t call out Antifa by name. Instead he blamed Trump.

 

The silence represents a dangerous and tense truce between once-mainstream politicians like Biden and violent anarcho-communists like Antifa."….

Pelosi embraced it to dehumanize the president and his supporters in Congress. Trump and the Republican lawmakers who support him – Pelosi’s own elected colleagues in the House – are now, in Pelosi’s words, “domestic enemies” and “enemies of the state.” In a coordinated script with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Pelosi accused the Department of Homeland Security of being Trump’s “private army” of “stormtroopers” to battle “peaceful protesters.”

 

The Overthrow Trump line has spread across the entire national Democratic party machine. There is now a rejection of the very idea of “election night results.” Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton, who lost to Trump in 2016, insisted that Biden not accept adverse election results “under any circumstances.” Her comment hinted at an actual mobilization plan to stage a coup if Trump is re-elected in a tight vote.

 

Siege warfare

Meanwhile, a foreign fringe group that ran the Occupy Wall Street campaign has promoted a 50-day operation to “lay siege to the White House.” The mob action was set to begin September 17 and continue through the election. That organized effort initially promised an immediate “spontaneous” post-election entrenchment of the insurgent forces that Nagl envisioned to battle federal officers who refuse to overthrow Trump. Organizers seemed to back off a bit, promising a 50-day jazz festival instead, but Antifa agitators from the Portland riots had already been spotted in DC.

 

A siege, of course, is a military action. Webster’s defines “siege” as “a military blockade of a city or fortified place to compel it to surrender.” To “lay siege,” according to Webster’s, is “to attack militarily.” In this case, the siege starts before the election.

National Security Agency Employee Indicted for Willful Transmission and Retention of National Defense Information

Defendant Allegedly Sent Highly Classified Information to an Individual Using His Personal Email

 

A Maryland man is charged with willful transmission and retention of National Defense Information (NDI) in an indictment unsealed today in the District of Maryland.

 

According to court documents, as an employee of the National Security Agency (NSA), Mark Robert Unkenholz, 60, of Hanover, held a Top Secret/SCI clearance and had lawful access to classified information relating to national defense that was closely held by the government (National Defense Information or NDI).

 

As detailed in the indictment, national security information is classified as Top Secret, Secret or Confidential. Only individuals with the appropriate security clearance could have authorized access to such classified national security information. All classified information can only be stored in an approved facility and container.

 

According to the 26-count indictment, on 13 occasions between Feb. 14, 2018 and June 1, 2020, Unkenholz, lawfully having possession of, access to, and control over NDI, which he had reason to believe could be used to the injury of the United States or to the advantage of any foreign nation, willfully transmitted that information to another person who was not entitled to receive it. The indictment alleges that the information Unkenholz transmitted was classified at the Secret and Top Secret/SCI levels and that Unkenholz transmitted the classified information using his personal email address to the other person’s private company email addresses. The person receiving the information held a Top Secret/SCI clearance from April 2016 until approximately June 2019, while employed at a company referred to in the indictment as Company 1. From July 2019 until approximately January 2021, the person worked for a company referred to in the indictment as Company 2, and was not authorized to access, or receive, classified information.

 

The indictment alleges that Unkenholz’s personal email address, and the company email addresses of the person receiving the information were not authorized storage locations for classified NDI. Unkenholz allegedly retained the classified NDI within his personal email address.

A far-right battalion has a key role in Ukraine's resistance. Its neo-Nazi history has been exploited by Putin

(CNN) President Vladimir Putin framed the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a "special mission" to protect Russian speakers from genocide at the hands of ​"neo-Nazis."

In a speech broadcast minutes before the invasion began on February 24​, Putin said: "We will seek to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine," ignoring the fact that the country's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is Jewish.

For the Kremlin, Exhibit A in this special mission is the far-right Azov movement, part of the military and political landscape in Ukraine for nearly a decade. ​

Azov's military and political wings formally separated in 2016, when the far-right National Corps party was founded. The Azov battalion had by then been integrated into the Ukrainian National Guard.

An effective fighting force that's very much involved in the current conflict, the battalion has a history of neo-Nazi leanings, which have not been entirely extinguished by its integration into the Ukrainian military. ​

In its heyday as an autonomous militia, the Azov Battalion was associated with White supremacists and neo-Nazi ideology and insignia. It was especially active in and around Mariupol in 2014 and 2015. CNN teams in the area at the time reported Azov's embrace of neo-Nazi emblems and paraphernalia.

After its integration into the Ukrainian National Guard, amid discussions in the US Congress about designating the Azov Movement a foreign terrorist organization, Ukraine's then minister of internal affairs, Arsen Avakov, defended the unit. "The shameful information campaign about the alleged spread of Nazi ideology (among Azov members) is a deliberate attempt to discredit the 'Azov' unit and the National Guard of Ukraine," he told the online newspaper Ukrayinska Pravda in 2019.

The battalion still operates as a relatively autonomous entity. It has been prominent in defending Mariupol in recent weeks, and its resistance has been widely praised by members of the government.

For Putin, who has falsely claimed Ukraine's government is run by "drug addicts and neo-Nazis," Azov presents an obvious target. Moscow has given the regiment an outsized role in the conflict, routinely accusing it of human rights abuses.

On March 7, Russia's ambassador to the United Nations blamed the Azov regiment for blocking an evacuation corridor in the besieged port city, saying they were using "citizens as a human shield." That claim has been repeated consistently in Russian media.

The same day, Azov major Denis Prokopenko said in a video shared on the regiment's Twitter account that the "attempts to organize a safe corridor for the (relocation) of civilian people… failed because of several actions of the enemy (Russian forces) in the assembly area."

After the bombing of a Mariupol theater that was sheltering civilians and had "children" written in Russian on the ground on either side of the building, the Russian Defense Ministry accused "militants of the nationalist 'Azov' battalion" of carrying out the attack. ​

In the Russian disinformation playbook, the Azov movement is a tempting target – one where fact and disinformation can be elided.

The existence of an identifiably Azov element within the Ukrainian armed forces and an effective element at that poses uncomfortable questions for the Ukrainian government and its Western allies, which continue to send arms to the country.

CNN has reached out to ​Ukraine's defense ministry for comment.

In the not-too-distant past, Azov's leadership openly espoused ​White supremacist views and cultivated links with similarly minded groups and individuals in the West.

The statement said that Azov's "motivation has always angered Russia. Therefore, disinformation attacks on the AZOV Regiment have not stopped since 2014."

It added that the movement has "repeatedly denied allegations of fascism, nazism and racism," and have Ukrainians of all different backgrounds including "Greeks, Jews, Crimean Tatars, Russians" who "continue to serve in AZOV."

"Most of them are Russian-speaking, most are Orthodox. But there are Catholics and Protestants, Pagans and those who profess Islam and Judaism, and there are atheists," Azov asserted.

It noted that the Azov regiment's role is as "a special unit of the National Guard of Ukraine, and is subordinated exclusively to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief – the President of Ukraine, by the way, a Jew."

"It would be absurd to think that we are united by the idea of white racism or nazism," the Azov statement added.

Despite the Azov movement's international notoriety, Ukraine "is not a cesspit for Nazi sympathizers," according to Alexander Ritzmann, a senior adviser at the Counter Extremism Project (CEP), based in Berlin.

He noted that in the last elections in Ukraine in 2019, Azov's political wing only won 2.15% of the vote, and Biletsky lost his seat in parliament.

Plus Ritzmann says there are far-right actors prominent in Russia, too. "There is a far-right extremist problem on both sides in the conflict, but there seems to be a bias in only reporting on Ukraine's far-right problem," he said.

International outreach

Since forming in 2014, the ​Azov movement has grown to include a militia, summer camps for kids and paramilitary training centers. It runs activities, including music festivals, political events and mixed-martial-arts tournaments, as it promoted itself in the international far-right space.

The National Corps has repeatedly demonstrated its disdain for liberal values in its treatment of minority groups – with few repercussions.

A 2018 US State Department report found that the movement's militia "attacked and destroyed a Romani camp in Kyiv after its residents failed to respond to their ultimatum to leave the area within 24 hours," in full view of the local police.

The 'Death Star'

While the far-right worldview of the Azov movement is clear, there has been an intense debate on whether the Azov Battalion should be classed a "foreign terrorist organization" by the US Department of State.

"People always assume it (the Azov regiment and Azov movement) is one Death Star," Rekawek said. "Year by year, the connections (between the regiment and the movement) are looser," he said, explaining that the battalion's ranks now include Ukrainians who have no affinity with its neo-Nazi past.

Ritzmann says the far-right element in Ukraine's army is no different to what's been detected in other militaries, such as in Germany and the US.

"Presumably, far-right extremists serve in the Ukrainian military as they do in all other militaries – valid data regarding the exact numbers are not available," he said.

"Back in 2015, the Azov Regiment itself claimed to have between 10% and 20% far-right extremists in their ranks," but those figures are possibly smaller today, he said.

But the regiment still uses the Wolfsangel symbol, and leaders of the Azov movement, who used to be commanders in the unit, continue to visit it, said Oleksiy Kuzmenko, a Ukrainian-American investigative journalist focusing on the Ukrainian far-right.

"The current leader of the Azov Regiment, Denis 'Redis' Prokopenko, is part of the core of the Azov movement since 2014, and served under commanders who went on to lead the Azov movement political and street wings," Kuzmenko told CNN.

Prokopenko's deputy, Svyatoslav "Kalyna" Palamar, has explicitly praised the movement's founder, Biletsky, as "a leader who 'finds sponsors that really invest money' into the regiment," Kuzmenko said.

Kuzmenko points out that as of 2021, the regiment was "actively involved in the training of the movement's youth leaders," and its website has a link to the movement's YouTube channel.

"Ukraine and (the) West's inaction on these issues paved the way for Putin to quite literally weaponize them against Ukraine in an attempt to justify his aggression," Kuzmenko said.

"While it's correct to point (out that) Ukraine's far-right has minimal electoral support, they (Azov) have enjoyed near impunity for violence aimed at minorities, were unchecked in their efforts to build influence in military and security forces, and have been normalized by Ukraine's senior leaders," he said.

In a statement to CNN on Wednesday, Prokopenko said: "Whoever calls us Nazis is deeply mistaken. We have young brave soldiers who give their lives for the independence of Ukraine and throw themselves under enemy tanks."

Foreign fighters

Since it formed, the Azov movement has recruited foreign fighters motivated by White supremacism to fight in Ukraine, experts say. Russia's full-scale invasion of the country, and Zelensky's call for foreign volunteers to join the fight, have raised concerns about radicalization in the war.

"My concern is that people, especially far-right extremists in Europe, (will gain) combat experience and training in the Ukrainian theater and then use that for terrorist attacks in Europe proper," Colin P. Clarke, senior research fellow at the New York- based ​foreign policy research nonprofit the Soufan Center, told CNN.

In 2020, Buzzfeed reported that Ukraine deported two members from the US-based neo-Nazi group the Atomwaffen Division, who were trying to gain combat experience with Azov.

Rekawek, an expert on foreign fighters at C-REX, said Azov has only been able to recruit 20 foreign fighters since the start of the 2022 invasion. CNN has not been able to verify those figures independently.

For its part, Russia also has a thriving ultra-nationalist scene that is tolerated by the authorities.

The Russian Imperial Movement (RIM), an extreme-right militia based in St. Petersburg, ​was, in 2020, the first White supremacist group to be categorized as "Specially Designated Global Terrorists" by the US State Department. While the RIM has worked in opposition to Putin's regime, it has supported the Russian side in the war against Ukraine – training Russian militants to join pro-Russian separatists in the conflict, according to the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) at Stanford University.

"They have never confronted their own nationalists," said Rekawek. ​Experts say Russia has also been a player in Europe's far-right space, with France's Marine Le Pen and Italy's Matteo Salvini enjoying close links with Putin before the 2022 invasion.

And of the "few hundred western individuals with extreme right-wing or 'nationalist' convictions" who traveled to fight in the Ukraine conflict around 2014, "most of those extremist volunteers fought on the side of the pro-Russian separatists," according to a CEP report published in March.

Ritzmann has found pro-Russian groups calling for volunteers in his research. This includes "the Russian security contractor Wagner Group, which has a history of displaying Nazi insignia," he said in the CEP report.

But amid the tide of millions of refugees and untold damage to Ukrainian cities, some experts say Russia's fixation on a minor player like the Azov movement serves a purpose – allowing the Kremlin to frame the conflict as an ideological and even existential struggle. However remote from reality that may be.

In the third week of Russia's war in Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky appeared in a video, dressed in a dark green shirt, speaking slowly and deliberately while standing behind a white presidential podium featuring his country's coat of arms. Except for his head, the Ukrainian president's body barely moved as he spoke. His voice sounded distorted and almost gravelly as he appeared to tell Ukrainians to surrender to Russia.

"I ask you to lay down your weapons and go back to your families," he appeared to say in Ukrainian in the clip, which was quickly identified as a deepfake. "This war is not worth dying for. I suggest you to keep on living, and I am going to do the same."

Five years ago, nobody had even heard of deepfakes, the persuasive-looking but false video and audio files made with the help of artificial intelligence. Now, they're being used to impact the course of a war. In addition to the fake Zelesnky video, which went viral last week, there was another widely circulated deepfake video depicting Russian President Vladimir Putin supposedly declaring peace in the Ukraine war.

Experts in disinformation and content authentication have worried for years about the potential to spread lies and chaos via deepfakes, particularly as they become more and more realistic looking. In general, deepfakes have improved immensely in a relatively short period of time. Viral videos of a faux Tom Cruise doing coin flips and covering Dave Matthews Band songs last year, for instance, showed how deepfakes can appear convincingly real.

Neither of the recent videos of Zelensky or Putin came close to TikTok Tom Cruise's high production values (they were noticeably low resolution, for one thing, which is a common tactic for hiding flaws.) But experts still see them as dangerous. That's because they show the lighting speed with which high-tech disinformation can now spread around the globe. As they become increasingly common, deepfake videos make it harder to tell fact from fiction online, and all the more so during a war that is unfolding online and rife with misinformation. Even a bad deepfake risks muddying the waters further.

"Once this line is eroded, truth itself will not exist," said Wael Abd-Almageed, a research associate professor at the University of Southern California and founding director of the school's Visual Intelligence and Multimedia Analytics Laboratory. "If you see anything and you cannot believe it anymore, then everything becomes false. It's not like everything will become true. It's just that we will lose confidence in anything and everything."

The head of France’s military intelligence agency has resigned because he failed to predict the war in Ukraine, multiple French media reported, citing unnamed sources and an internal email announcing his departure.

 

Eric Vidaud had been at the helm of the military intelligence agency for seven months, but sources told l’Opinion newspaper and other outlets that the army had judged his briefings to be “insufficient” and that he lacked “subject mastery”.

 

France’s armed forces chief of staff, Thierry Burkhard, told Le Monde this month that French intelligence, unlike its American counterpart, was unable to predict Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

 

“The Americans said the Russians were going to attack, they were right. Our services thought that invading Ukraine would have a monstrous cost and that the Russians had other options,” Burkhard told Le Monde.

 

L’Opinion revealed that Vidaud was told on Tuesday that he would have to leave his post in the summer due tofailures in Ukraine,butthe general decided to resign immediately.
