Russia transfers Chernobyl plant to Ukraine, withdraws troops from airport near Kyiv

Ukraine has not reported staff rotation at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in nearly two weeks.

Russian forces have reportedly transferred control of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant to Ukrainian personnel after seizing the facility at the start of its invasion of Ukraine.

Moscow further appears to have started withdrawing forces from some areas, including the Hostomel airport outside of Kyiv, in order to "regroup" troops on key fronts such as the Donbas, a breakaway region of southeast Ukraine.

The International Atomic Energy Agency on Thursday reported that Ukraine said Russian forces have transferred control of the Chernobyl plant back to Ukraine in writing. The authorities also told IAEA that three convoys of Russian troops were headed toward Belarus, a close ally of the Kremlin.

Russia is also reportedly moving equipment to Belarus as well.

Ukrainian Ground Forces Command claim they have seen "'almost 700 units of equipment withdrawing towards Ivankov, towards the Belarusian border,'" New Lines magazine reporter Michael Weiss tweeted.

A senior US defense official said Russians "have abandoned Hostomel airport," according to VOA reporter Carla Babb.

Hostomel Airport was the site of an intense battle in late February that resulted in the Russians capturing the key site.

"Russia is trying to regroup, resupply and reinforce," NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said, per the BBC.

The UK claims the Kremlin is trying to send up to 2,000 troops from Georgia into Ukraine as reinforcements.

Russia's Defense Minister on Tuesday said the Kremlin would "reduce military activity" in portions of Ukraine to focus on "liberating" Donbas.

"We see continued shelling of cities and we see that Russia is re-positioning some of the troops, moving some of them around, most likely to reinforce their efforts in the Donbas region," Stoltenberg said.

"At the same time, Russia maintains pressure on Kyiv and other cities. So we can expect additional offensive actions, bringing even more suffering," he added.

Ukrainian officials have expressed doubts that Russia is going to order a mass removal of troops.

Meat industry leader Paul Troja among victims of Mount Disappointment helicopter crash

One of the five people killed in a helicopter crash at Mount Disappointment has been remembered as a "passionate" leader of the meat industry, as investigators continue to investigate the cause of the tragedy.

Paul Troja, 73, lived in Albert Park and was chairman of Radford Meats, which operated an abattoir in Warragul, south-east of Melbourne.

Two helicopters which were part of a private charter were flying north from Melbourne's CBD over Mount Disappointment on Thursday when one disappeared just after 9am.

Police said the other four occupants of the plane, all of whom died, were a Cheltenham man aged 32, an Inverloch woman aged 50, and two men from New South Wales aged 59 and 70.

Mr Troja was flying with a major client and their working group to inspect a property, the company told the ABC.

Chief executive Paul Scanlon told the Victorian Country Hour that Mr Troja had had a long and distinguished career in the meat industry and his death had hit the company hard.

"It's a tragic time for us here at Radfords," he said.

"Our thoughts are with his wife Ann, his children and his grandchildren and the members of his extended family and friends and also the family and friends of the other people caught up in this accident," Mr Scanlon said.

Scott Morrison says Australia will send Bushmasters to Ukraine and fill Volodymyr Zelenskyy's request

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says Australia will fly a number of Australian-made Bushmaster vehicles over to Ukraine, after a public plea from the nation's wartime President.

The vehicles have been globally lauded for protecting soldiers' safety

Volodymyr Zelenskyy used a speech to the parliament to request Bushmasters

Volodymyr Zelenskyy directly appealed for the armoured vehicles while speaking to Australia’s parliament via video link on Thursday, saying those “fighting against evil” must be armed.

Mr Morrison said this morning that Australia would meet Mr Zelenskyy's request.

"We're not just sending our prayers, we are sending our guns, our ammunitions, humanitarian aid, all of this, our body armour," he said.

"We're going to be sending our armoured vehicles, our Bushmasters as well, and we'll be flying them over there on our C-17 [Globemasters]."

But he did not say how many vehicles would be sent or when they would be flown to Europe.

Mr Morrison's confirmation came after Defence Minister Peter Dutton said his department was still looking into how to get the Bushmasters to Ukraine.

"We are very, very much open to the request and I think of the inspiration that President Zelenskyy has provided to his own people and the world – he has brought Europe together in a way that was not possible before the war — we want to do whatever we can to help bring this war to an end," Mr Dutton said on Friday morning.

Speaking via a translator, Mr Zelenskyy said Ukraine needed weapons as well as sanctions against Russia and its supporters.

"Most of all we have to keep those who are fighting against this evil armed," he said.

"For example you have very good armoured personnel vehicles, Bushmasters, that could help Ukraine substantially, and other pieces of equipment that could strengthen our position in terms of armament.

"If you have an opportunity to share this with us we would be very grateful."
