Russia transfers Chernobyl plant to Ukraine, withdraws troops from airport near Kyiv

 

Ukraine has not reported staff rotation at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in nearly two weeks.

 

Russian forces have reportedly transferred control of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant to Ukrainian personnel after seizing the facility at the start of its invasion of Ukraine.

 

Moscow further appears to have started withdrawing forces from some areas, including the Hostomel airport outside of Kyiv, in order to "regroup" troops on key fronts such as the Donbas, a breakaway region of southeast Ukraine.

 

The International Atomic Energy Agency on Thursday reported that Ukraine said Russian forces have transferred control of the Chernobyl plant back to Ukraine in writing. The authorities also told IAEA that three convoys of Russian troops were headed toward Belarus, a close ally of the Kremlin.

 

Russia is also reportedly moving equipment to Belarus as well.

 

Ukrainian Ground Forces Command claim they have seen "'almost 700 units of equipment withdrawing towards Ivankov, towards the Belarusian border,'" New Lines magazine reporter Michael Weiss tweeted.

 

A senior US defense official said Russians "have abandoned Hostomel airport," according to VOA reporter Carla Babb.

 

Hostomel Airport was the site of an intense battle in late February that resulted in the Russians capturing the key site.

 

"Russia is trying to regroup, resupply and reinforce," NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said, per the BBC.

 

The UK claims the Kremlin is trying to send up to 2,000 troops from Georgia into Ukraine as reinforcements.

 

Russia's Defense Minister on Tuesday said the Kremlin would "reduce military activity" in portions of Ukraine to focus on "liberating" Donbas.

 

"We see continued shelling of cities and we see that Russia is re-positioning some of the troops, moving some of them around, most likely to reinforce their efforts in the Donbas region," Stoltenberg said.

 

"At the same time, Russia maintains pressure on Kyiv and other cities. So we can expect additional offensive actions, bringing even more suffering," he added.

 

Ukrainian officials have expressed doubts that Russia is going to order a mass removal of troops.

Meat industry leader Paul Troja among victims of Mount Disappointment helicopter crash

 

One of the five people killed in a helicopter crash at Mount Disappointment has been remembered as a "passionate" leader of the meat industry, as investigators continue to investigate the cause of the tragedy.

Paul Troja, 73, lived in Albert Park and was chairman of Radford Meats, which operated an abattoir in Warragul, south-east of Melbourne.

 

Two helicopters which were part of a private charter were flying north from Melbourne's CBD over Mount Disappointment on Thursday when one disappeared just after 9am.

 

Police said the other four occupants of the plane, all of whom died, were a Cheltenham man aged 32, an Inverloch woman aged 50, and two men from New South Wales aged 59 and 70.

 

Mr Troja was flying with a major client and their working group to inspect a property, the company told the ABC.

 

Chief executive Paul Scanlon told the Victorian Country Hour that Mr Troja had had a long and distinguished career in the meat industry and his death had hit the company hard.

 

"It's a tragic time for us here at Radfords," he said.

 

"Our thoughts are with his wife Ann, his children and his grandchildren and the members of his extended family and friends and also the family and friends of the other people caught up in this accident," Mr Scanlon said.

Scott Morrison says Australia will send Bushmasters to Ukraine and fill Volodymyr Zelenskyy's request

 

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says Australia will fly a number of Australian-made Bushmaster vehicles over to Ukraine, after a public plea from the nation's wartime President.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy used a speech to the parliament to request Bushmasters

 

Volodymyr Zelenskyy directly appealed for the armoured vehicles while speaking to Australiaโ€™s parliament via video link on Thursday, saying those โ€œfighting against evilโ€ must be armed.

 

Mr Morrison said this morning that Australia would meet Mr Zelenskyy's request.

 

"We're not just sending our prayers, we are sending our guns, our ammunitions, humanitarian aid, all of this, our body armour," he said.

 

"We're going to be sending our armoured vehicles, our Bushmasters as well, and we'll be flying them over there on our C-17 [Globemasters]."

 

But he did not say how many vehicles would be sent or when they would be flown to Europe.

 

Mr Morrison's confirmation came after Defence Minister Peter Dutton said his department was still looking into how to get the Bushmasters to Ukraine.

 

"We are very, very much open to the request and I think of the inspiration that President Zelenskyy has provided to his own people and the world โ€“ he has brought Europe together in a way that was not possible before the war โ€” we want to do whatever we can to help bring this war to an end," Mr Dutton said on Friday morning.

 

Speaking via a translator, Mr Zelenskyy said Ukraine needed weapons as well as sanctions against Russia and its supporters.

 

"Most of all we have to keep those who are fighting against this evil armed," he said.

 

"For example you have very good armoured personnel vehicles, Bushmasters, that could help Ukraine substantially, and other pieces of equipment that could strengthen our position in terms of armament.

 

"If you have an opportunity to share this with us we would be very grateful."

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) โ€” The government of El Salvador said Monday it has arrested more than 1,000 gang suspects after a wave of killings over the weekend.

 

President Nayib Bukele ordered food for gang members held in Salvadoran prisons be reduced to two meals per day, seized inmatesโ€™ mattresses and posted a video of prisoners being frog-marched through corridors and down stairs.

 

The government declared a state of emergency and locked down prisons after 87 murders were committed Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

 

Authorities have blamed the killings on gang members, and on Monday authorities said soldiers and police had raided gang strongholds around San Salvador.

 

Bukele wrote that those detained would not be released. His order that food for gang inmates be cut apparently was aimed at stretching current food supplies to feed the new detainees as well.

 

โ€œDon't think they are going to be set free,โ€ Bukele wrote in his Twitter account. โ€œWe are going to ration the same food we are giving now (to inmates).โ€

The inmates were stripped to their underwear, and their mattresses were taken away.

 

El Salvadorโ€™s congress granted Bukeleโ€™s request to declare a state of emergency early Sunday amid the wave of 87 gang-related killings over the weekend. By comparison, there were 79 homicides in the entire month of February.

The homicides appeared linked to the countryโ€™s notorious street gangs, who effectively control many neighborhoods in the capital. The National Police reported they have captured five leaders of the Mara Salvatrucha or MS-13, who they claimed ordered the weekend killings.

 

Bukele previously ordered the head of the countryโ€™s prisons to carry out an immediate 24/7 lockdown of gang inmates in their cells.

 

โ€œThey are not to go out even to the patioโ€ of prisons, Bukele wrote, adding โ€a message to the gangs: because of your actions, now your homeboys will not see even one ray of sunlight.โ€

 

Bukele's tough attitude on crime is likely to find few critics in El Salvador.

 

โ€œThis is unbearable. The gangs kill whenever they want, they do whatever they want. They have to be punished, and very hard,โ€ said Mario Alas, 39, as he got off a commuter bus in San Salvador, the capital.

 

Capital resident Juana Sรกnchez, 55, complained, โ€œNothing happens to them, they put them in jail for a while and fatten them up, and when they get out they get out they continue to prey on people, taking their money and killing them.โ€

 

But the countryโ€™s enormously powerful street gangs have proved a double-edged sword for Bukele.

 

โ€œWe must remind the people of El Salvador that what is happening now is due to the negligence of those who protected criminals,โ€ the conservative Arena party said in a statement.

 

That was an apparent reference to a December report by the U.S. Treasury Department that said Bukeleโ€™s government secretly negotiated a truce with leaders of the gangs. That contradicted Bukeleโ€™s denials and raised tensions between the two nations.

 

The U.S government alleges Bukeleโ€™s government bought the gangsโ€™ support with financial benefits and privileges for their imprisoned leaders including prostitutes and cellphones. Bukele has vehemently denied the accusations.

 

The explosive accusations cuts to the heart of one of Bukeleโ€™s most highly touted successes in office: a plunge in the countryโ€™s homicide rate.

 

The revelations are not the first time that Bukele's disdain for legal niceties have raised tensions with the Biden administration. After the new congress removed the attorney general and the justices of the constitutional chamber of the Supreme Court in May, the U.S. government expressed concern over the direction of the country.

 

The U.S. Agency for International Development announced it would shift aid from government agencies in El Salvador to non-governmental organizations.

Embattled GOP Rep. Madison Cawthornโ€™s political fate is growing increasingly rocky after he alleged that lawmakers engage in orgies and use cocaine, with North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis coming out against his fellow Republican ahead of his May 17 primary.

 

Additionally, Cawthorn faces increasing chatter from House GOP colleagues about whether he should lose his committee assignments.

 

Cawthorn came under fire after alleging, during an appearance on the Warrior Poet Society podcast, that politicians invited him to an orgy and that he witnessed colleagues using cocaine. The accusations sparked fury within the House GOP conference, with members airing grievances that their offices were receiving inquiries about his claims. That led Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana, in a Wednesday meeting, to grill the North Carolina Republican on his allegations and call for him to โ€œstraighten his life out.โ€

 

McCarthy said after the meeting that the 26-year-old lawmaker told them his claims on the podcast were exaggerated. Despite McCarthyโ€™s call for Cawthorn to โ€œmake things rightโ€ and few of his GOP colleagues coming to his defense, the freshman lawmaker has not directly addressed the situation.

 

Seven Republicans have entered the primary race to oust Cawthorn, with two sources telling the Washington Examiner that state Sen. Chuck Edwards and businesswoman Michele Woodhouse could be viable contenders.

 

Still, Cawthorn only needs 30% of the primary vote to win renomination in the crowded field.

 

โ€œChuck Edwards has a lot of money. He's going to be a factor,โ€ one GOP lawmaker told the Washington Examiner. โ€œThe question here is, in a scenario with a 30% threshold, can he get the nomination โ€” I'm not sure what happens here. It's too early to tell.โ€

 

The fallout from the scandal โ€” which comes on the heels of a series of other controversies, including Cawthorn referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as โ€œa thugโ€ and facing legal troubles for driving with a suspended license โ€” appears to have been the final straw for Tillis. The senator on Thursday released a statement backing Edwards for the GOP nomination.

 

โ€œThe 11th Congressional District deserves a congressman who is fully dedicated to serving their constituents. Unfortunately, Madison Cawthorn has fallen well short of the most basic standards Western North Carolina expects from their representatives, and voters now have several well-qualified candidates to choose from who would be a significant improvement,โ€ Tillis said. โ€œI believe Chuck Edwards is the best choice."

 

Sen. Richard Burr, a North Carolina Republican, said he is not endorsing in the GOP primary, but Burr told reporters he believes Cawthorn has โ€‹โ€‹"been an embarrassment at times" to the party.

 

And McCarthy declined to comment when asked by the Washington Examiner if he will continue to support Cawthorn in his primary race.

 

The firebrand conservative has proven himself to be a strong fundraiser, having taken in $2,860,009 between 2021 and 2022 through his leadership PAC and campaign committee. McCarthy spent the bulk of it, with $292,386 in cash on hand, according to the latest filings.

 

While Cawthorn has opted against publicly addressing the scandal, the congressman took to social media to assert he has no plans of dropping out of the race.

 

"The radical left, the establishment, and the media want to take me down. Their attacks have been relentless. I won't stop fighting. I won't bow to the mob. They want to silence the America First movement. I'm not going anywhere,โ€ he tweeted.

Inspector General Says Post Office Used iCOP Surveillance Program to Illegally Spy on Social Media Users

 

Why did the US government use the postal service to monitor what Americans post on social media?

 

The law enforcement arm of the US Postal Service secretly monitored and collected Americansโ€™ social media posts, according to documents previously obtained by Yahoo News.

 

The spying program is known as iCOP, or Internet Covert Operations Program and involved goons trolling through social media sites to look for โ€œinflammatoryโ€ posts โ€“ and then sharing the information with other government agencies.

 

Last we checked, โ€œinflammatoryโ€ language was covered by the First Amendment.

 

โ€œiCOP analysts are currently monitoring these social media channels for any potential threats stemming from the scheduled protests and will disseminate intelligence updates as needed,โ€ the bulletin posted last year said.

 

The bulletin mentioned the โ€œStop the Stealโ€ rally and included screenshots from an alleged member of the Proud Boys, but iCOP conceded that none of the posts contained anything threatening.

 

The bulletin didnโ€™t mention anything about Antifa or BLM terrorists.

 

It turns out the post office used the program to illegally spy on Americans.

 

An inspector general investigation concluded the Post Office illegally used iCOP to spy on social media users.

 

Yahoo News reported:

 

An inspector general probe into the U.S. Postal Service surveillance program, known as iCOP, concluded that the agency did not have the legal authority to conduct the sweeping intelligence collection and surveillance of American protesters and others between 2018 and 2021.

 

The Postal Service Office of Inspector General launched an investigation into iCOP โ€” which stands for Internet Covert Operations Program โ€” at the request of Congress in direct response to reporting from Yahoo News last year.

 

โ€œWe determined that certain proactive searches iCOP conducted using an open-source intelligence tool from February to April 2021 exceeded the Postal Inspection Serviceโ€™s law enforcement authority,โ€ the March 25, 2022, inspector general report stated.

 

Using sophisticated technology and software, iCOP was running keyword searches like โ€œprotestโ€ on social media to collect online speech about a host of different events that contained no threats and had nothing to do with the Postal Serviceโ€™s work.

 

The inspector general report notes that in April 2021 Postal Inspection Service lawyers asked iCOP to remove โ€œprotestโ€ from its keyword searches โ€œto protect constitutional rights.โ€

 

Frank Albergo, president of the Postal Police Officers Association, told Yahoo News that the Postal Inspection Service had โ€œlost their way.โ€

On Thursdayโ€™s broadcast of MSNBCโ€™s โ€œAll In,โ€ Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm stated that many hoped โ€œwe would be focusing solely on clean energy solutions, renewable, making that transition,โ€ but the war in Ukraine has thrown a wrench into that and said that โ€œwe have got to use this reason to become energy independent with clean energy.โ€

 

Host Chris Hayes said that he would probably take a similar approach to President Joe Biden because people need gas to get around and gas price increases harm people, but โ€œAt the same time, it just seems so depressingly insane that we are here in 2022 and itโ€™s like, letโ€™s drill baby, drill, letโ€™s get more oil on those markets, this is the solution. And itโ€™s like itโ€™s always the next cigarette is the one weโ€™re going to give up, but for now, we need to buy another carton. Why should I not be depressed by this?โ€

 

Granholm responded, โ€œI totally get it, Chris, believe me. I think a lot of us came into this hoping that we would be focusing solely on clean energy solutions, renewable, making that transition, but we didnโ€™t anticipate that Vladimir Putin would wage war on Ukraine and cause these markets to go out of control. And so, thatโ€™s why the president said this is a two-step solution. One is, letโ€™s increase supply right now because weโ€™re on a wartime footing. And we want to reduce peopleโ€™s pain at the pump and safeguard them against this incredible volatility. But second, we have got to use this reason to become energy independent with clean energy. We donโ€™t want to be relying upon fossil fuel markets that are incredibly volatile or from countries that donโ€™t have our interests at heart. So, ultimately, the best solution is to go clean.โ€

 

She continued, โ€œAnd thatโ€™s why the second part of what he announced was invoking the Defense Production Act to help increase the building of batteries for electric vehicles in the United States. He also referred to the Weatherization Assistance Program, which โ€” we released $3.2 billion to the states to make sure that people donโ€™t use as much energy as they are right now because their homes may be leaky. We want to invest in renewables. We want to invest in the technologies that decarbonize the fossil fuel industry. And thatโ€™s why this second part, to become energy independent with clean energy, is the medium-to-long-term strategy.โ€

Never Trump Candidate Seen Allegedly Illegally Forging Petition Signatures In Parking Lot In Effort To Run Against Elise Stefanik

 

A never-Trump Republican in New York can be seen allegedly illegally forging petition signatures in a parking lot in his effort to challenge New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik, a video obtained exclusively by the Daily Caller shows.

 

Lonny Koons, who is trying to primary Stefanik in NY21, can be seen in his car in videos that were taken at the Ticonderoga Walmart Parking lot on March 24. The day the two videos were filmed he said on social media that he was in Ticonderoga and โ€œobtained a healthy number of petition signatures.โ€ However, the signatures appeared to have been faked and signed by Koons himself.

 

In the videos, posted on YouTube by an anonymous account called โ€œNorth Country Watch,โ€ Koons can be seen signing a number of signatures and names on a document in the parking lot, on the same day he said he was collecting signatures in Ticonderoga. The petition filing period starts April 4. Republicans need a minimum of 1,250 signatures to appear on the ballot.

 

On March 12th, Koons posted a letter on Facebook that he sent to the Working Families Party of New York. In the letter, he states that he is โ€œprimarying Ms. Elise Stefanik for the republican nominationโ€ and goes on to ask why the Working Families Party is representing him as a supporter of former President Donald Trump.

 

The Working Families Party is a far-left socialist political organization that stands for Defunding the Police, the Green New Deal and Medicare for all.

 

The organization which Koons founded, Blue Collar Politics, has also been vocal in supporting a โ€œTrue โ€˜Greenโ€™ Movementโ€œ, โ€œUniversal Healthcare for Allโ€œ, and โ€œpolice reform.โ€

 

The Daily Caller spoke to state officials who said they were shocked by the videos and said Koons was committing a felony.

 

Dutchess County Republican Elections Commissioner Erik Haight told the Caller, โ€œI watched the video several times. Honestly, in disbelief. Itโ€™s shockingly brazen. Itโ€™s such a violation of the publicโ€™s trust to be forging voterโ€™s signatures on an official document that eventually is going to be filed with the government entity, the State Board of Elections. And heโ€™s perpetrating a fraud on the electoral system. Frankly, if this candidate files those petitions, he should be prosecuted to the greatest extent of the law and it is a felony, and every time he affixes someone elseโ€™s signature to his petition.โ€

 

โ€œItโ€™s a crime,โ€ said Haight. โ€œAnd frankly, if he does file these fraudulent petitions, heโ€™s playing with fire and people have been imprisoned for that crime,โ€ Haight continued.

Also, cool article by @axios trying to claim that Trump's record keeping was bad, possible that the 7+ hour gap on 1/6 was just poor record keeping: Trump's 2016 campaign was based on concept that former government officials should get "locked-up" for poor record keeping.

US tells Americans in Russia and Ukraine to leave immediately

 

State Department says Russia is targeting Americans after basketball star is jailed on drug charges

All Americans currently in Russia and Ukraine should leave right away, as they may be singled out by Russian security officials on account of their citizenship, the State Department said on Thursday.

 

โ€œAll US citizens in Russia and Ukraine should depart immediately,โ€ State Department spokesman Ned Price announced at the daily press briefing at Foggy Bottom.

 

Price said the US travel advisories have been updated to reflect โ€œreportsโ€ that Russian security officials have โ€œsingled out and detainedโ€ US citizens, both in Ukraine and in Russia itself.

 

In addition, Price claimed the US has seen Russian President Vladimir Putin โ€œdenigrate equality, free speech and human rights for all.โ€

 

While the State Department travel advisory for Russia was updated on Wednesday, urging American citizens residing or traveling in the country to leave right away, the one for Ukraine was last updated on March 29 and still urges Americans there only to register with the US embassy.

 

The Russia advisory cites the โ€œinvasion of Ukraineโ€ as the chief reason. Both Russia and Ukraine have been under the โ€œLevel 4 โ€“ Do Not Travelโ€ US advisory for over a year, on account of the Covid-19 pandemic.

 

In his introductory remarks, Price did not elaborate on โ€œreportsโ€ that led the US government to announce the change. The only American known to have been detained by Russian authorities in recent weeks is the WNBA basketball star Brittney Griner.

 

Griner was arrested on February 17 โ€“ a week prior to the escalation of hostilities in Ukraine โ€“ at Moscowโ€™s Sheremetyevo International Airport, for possession of illegal narcotics. A drug-sniffing dog alerted to her luggage and police found carrying cannabis oil cartridges for a vaporizer inhaler, according to the Russian police. Griner has been charged with drug smuggling, and a court ordered her held in jail until May 19.
