Two-thirds of Public Drinking Water Systems in the U.S. Reported High Levels of Uranium

Uranium widespread in U.S. drinking water, higher than acceptable levels more likely to be near ‘semi-urban’ areas
We have learned that cancer-causing “forever chemicals” are included in the packaging of some of the most popular fast-food offerings in the country.
We learned, too, that scientists are, for the first time, finding microplastics in human blood streams.
And now comes a report on a drinking water study that analyzed data from the Environmental Protection Agency which may add to the list of things that can help explain why some of the country’s more poverty-stricken areas deal with higher levels of chronic illness. Because, according to Gizmodo, the study looked at information the EPA had from 37,000 drinking water systems around the country, and found that about “two-thirds” of them had detectable levels of uranium in them. And, out of that, 2.1% were found to have “an average concentration higher than the EPA’s limit.”

TESTING REQUIREMENTS & RECOMMENDATIONS
FOR [PRIVATELY OWNED DRINKING WATER WELLS]
URANIUM ADVISORY– Scattered drinking water sources in the Western Upper Peninsula have been found to contain uranium in amounts that exceed the federal Maximum Contaminant Level 0.03 mg/L. The source of the uranium may be the shale deposits that run inconsistently through the Jacobsville and Freda Sandstone formations. Water supplies with radioactivity have been found in Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon Counties.
The health effects of uranium exposure in the amounts that we have seen are mainly limited to kidney damage with long-time use. There is also a very small possibility of an increased risk of cancer over a lifetime of exposure. We caution people with wells constructed in the Jacobsville and Freda Sandstone formations that the possibility of uranium contamination exists and advise that their water be tested for uranium.

Obvious left wing, but to follow the “Trust” money may be useful:
However, the best advice offered by the EPA in a fact sheet addressing the effect of uranium and radiation on health is to “eat a healthy diet,” “use drinking water from a regulated source,” “get regular cancer screenings,” and “REDUCE YOUR CONTACT” (United States Environmental Protection Agency).
The mining companies will clean up 94 abandoned uranium mines in the Navajo reservation, with the United States government contributing $335 million to a trust account to help fund site evaluations, cost analyses, and cleanup of the mines.

The Issue: Groundwater monitoring in northeastern Washington State has shown elevated levels of naturally occurring uranium in several community water systems and in private wells. A better understanding of the occurrence of uranium in groundwater along with outreach products that communicate the risk to area residents are important in order to reduce uranium exposure, protect from the toxic kidney effects of uranium, and reduce the risk of cancer.
