Seattle rape cases moved to back burner, police insiders say

 

In the last year, Seattle Police have forwarded far fewer sex assault cases to the King County Prosecutor’s Office. Meanwhile, arrests for sex crimes involving adults and children have plummeted: This year so far, 1.6% of cases investigated by the sexual assault and child abuse unit have resulted in an arrest, down from 14% in 2019.

Containers To Be Removed From Massive Ship Stranded In Chesapeake Bay

 

A massive container ship has been stuck in the Chesapeake Bay waters outside Baltimore for three weeks. Numerous refloating attempts have failed, and Evergreen Marine, the owner of Ever Forward, declared "General Average" last week. Now salvage crews, left with only one option, will begin to unload thousands of containers to reduce the ship's current weight for future refloating attempts.

 

According to local news WMAR, the massive 1,100-foot container ship with 5,000 containers on board is stuck in 24 feet of water and needs about 42 feet of draft. The failed attempts to refloat the vessel will make way for two cranes in the coming days that will begin unloading hundreds of containers from both the starboard and port side in a move called "lightering." The entire process could take two weeks or more.

 

"Salvage experts determined they would not be able to overcome the ground force of the Ever Forward in its current loaded condition," the Coast Guard said in a statement.

 

John Martino, from the School of Seamanship, said unloading containers off the vessel will be no easy task:

 

"They also have to be careful the order they take the containers off.

 

"So, they have to make sure everything stays balanced as they go along," Martino said.

 

As an undertaking to free the container ship can be very expensive, Evergreen declared "General Average" last week to transfer some of the refloating costs to cargo owners.

 

Unloading containers risks unbalancing and damaging the ship. There are concerns that stress on the hull buried in more than 20 feet of mud could result in a fuel leak, or worse, structural damage to the vessel that could make it a more permanent fixture in the Chesapeake Bay.

You are right anon. A gift granted and some of us only realized this when we got here. I always knew God gave me a gift of discernment, but as a child I was naive, growing up my circumstances made me question even my family that were supposed to love each other.

 

The experience didnt make me jaded but increased my perceptions to almost an instantaneous knowledge of who to trust and whos “vibration” so to speak was low and filled with malcontent, they could never be trusted.

 

So I thank God I had that innocence and trust as a child, I didnt lose trust, I just refined the knowledge of who could be trusted more quickly. A blessing of a warrior and sometimes a curse.

 

But ultimately I’d rather know what I know. I see too many being taken advantage of, because they are concerned about being liked. Kek

Supreme Court justices are exempt from oversight under the federal judicial code of conduct, and it is left up to them in order to self-regulate their recusal from cases. Ideally, justices identify any conflict of interest which may cause them to be biased while deciding a case (ex. financial conflicts of interest) and they voluntary recuse themselves from the case in order to prevent a biased ruling from being handed down.

 

Unfortunately, Justice Clarence Thomas has failed to conform to this code of conduct, particularly in regard to cases involving Monsanto Co. In the 1970s—from 1976 to 1979—Clarence Thomas worked as a corporate lawyer for the Monsanto Corporation, thus creating a serious conflict of interest for him when deciding any case involving Monsanto. While some on the right (including Monsanto) have argued that Monsanto was a chemical company without involvement in GMOs when Thomas worked there, thus there isn’t a conflict of interest, this simply is not the case; in any situation where a judge worked with, for, or against a plaintiff, there is a real conflict of interest.

 

Since his appointment to the Supreme Court, Justice Thomas has participated in several cases involving his previous employer—in none of these cases did he follow the judicial codes of conduct and recuse himself:

 

Monsanto Co. v. Geertson Seed Farms: In 2010, the Supreme Court decided a case that affected regulations on GMO “RoundUp Ready” alfalfa. The decision of this case was a 7-1 vote, in favor of Monsanto. Despite his obvious conflict of interest, Thomas did not recuse himself from this case. In contrast to Thomas, Justice Breyer recused himself from the Monsanto v. Geertson Seed Farms case because his brother, Charles Breyer, was the Federal judge whose decision was being appealed.

 

Bowman v. Monsanto Co.: In 2013, the Supreme Court decided a case which expanded the patent rights of GMO manufacturers to include naturally reproduced seed stock—this would prevent farmers from saving and naturally replicating Monsanto seeds as they would do with spare non-GMO seeds. While this decision was unanimous and Thomas’s vote was ultimately irrelevant, the fact that he refused to recuse himself in a case of such import involving his former employer is indicative of his pattern of disregarding conflicts of interest.

 

While there is no direct evidence supporting any continuing financial entanglements between Justice Thomas and Monsanto, there are several indirect connections which further increase the conflict when Thomas decides a case involving Monsanto (these connections are interesting but unnecessary, as the simple fact that he worked there is enough of a conflict to necessitate recusal).

 

Over the past few years, Justice Thomas has taken numerous expensive gifts and social engagements from groups which are extremely pro-agribusiness. In particular, Thomas’s acceptance of a $15,000 “gift” from the American Enterprise Institute and his speaking engagements in front of the Federalist Society present a conflict in regard to his deciding GMO cases. Both AEI and the Federalist Society consider themselves conservative “free-market” think-tanks, and have been virulently against increased regulations on GMO producers. As such, Thomas’s involvement with these groups creates a pressure for him to rule in favor of corporate interests—after all, if he were to vote against GMO producers, it is likely that he would no longer receive the money of AEI or the prestige of speaking in front of the Federalist Society.

 

Long story short, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is irreparably entangled with Monsanto—both in his past employment and his current affiliations—and he should automatically recuse himself if Monsanto has any involvement in a case. Unfortunately, Thomas has demonstrated a shocking lack of judicial ethics—he has taken numerous “gifts” from people with interests in his court, “forgot” to report his wife’s lobbying income for years, and has refused to recuse himself from cases, even when there were glaring conflicts of interest—and it doesn’t appear as though this will change any time soon. If he were on any other court in the land, Thomas’s ethical violations would have resulted in his removal from the bench, but the fact that he is a Supreme Court justice virtually immunizes him from oversight.

 

For the immediate future, it appears that Monsanto has at least one friend on the Supreme Court who will put aside judicial ethics in order rule in its favor.

I think about our pig everyday many times . we rescued 20 years ago from living in a metal hot trailer that he was locked in and not taken care of .

I drive by the trailer still to this day ,

My older Brother had my pig slaughter to consume , I could never eat the meat , because I loved my pig , and I should never had witnessed the whole process.

I still have a hard time going out back to the corral , and barn area..

In televised remarks, he described Mariupol's industrial zone as a "city within a city".

"Several floors were built underground during the Soviet Union. It is impossible to bomb from above, you need to do a cleanup operation underground," Basurin told Russian state television.

"This will take time too. They have been preparing for this; they know this territory better than us," he added.

Basurin said that separatist forces should aim to blockade the Ukrainian army in the industrial area and "then wait for them to give themselves up". Basurin estimated that up to 3,500 Ukrainian troops were taking part in fighting at Azovstal and that armed civilians were fighting alongside the Ukrainian army in Mariupol.

"You have to take into account the fact that some residents of Mariupol have taken up arms. Therefore that number could be higher," he said.

Residents have spoken of utter devastation and dire conditions in Mariupol. The city's population has shrunk from 400,000 before the conflict to around 120,000 today.

WHO calls for access to Ukraine's Mariupol

LVIV (AFP) - The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday (April 7) called for humanitarian access to Ukraine's besieged city of Mariupol, and said over 90 attacks on health services had been confirmed in the war.

Speaking at a press conference in Lviv, WHO regional director for Europe Hans Kluge lamented that while health assistance had reached many "affected areas", some were out of reach.

"It's true some remain very difficult. I think a priority definitely, I think we all agree, would be Mariupol," Kluge told reporters.

Located in a strategic southeastern spot between Russia-occupied Crimea and pro-Russian separatist regions in Ukraine's east, Mariupol has been the scene of some of the fiercest assaults by Moscow's forces.

Residents have spoken of utter devastation and dire conditions. The city's population has shrunk from 400,000 before the conflict to around 120,000 today.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday accused Russia of blocking humanitarian access to the city to hide evidence of "thousands" of people killed there.

Kluge at the same time noted that the WHO had "delivered over 185 tonnes of medical supplies to the hardest hit areas of the country, reaching half-a-million people".

The UN health agency also said it had confirmed 91 attacks on different health services, including supplies, ambulances and several hospitals.

"This is clearly a breach of international humanitarian law," Kluge said, stressing that it was not the WHO's mandate to attribute the attacks to actors and that they had only verified that the attacks had taken place.

The regional director also noted that "50 per cent of Ukraine's pharmacies are presumed closed and 1,000 health facilities are in proximity to conflict areas or changed areas of control".
