Miami-Dade Mayor Declares State of Emergency Over Housing Affordability Due to Unprecedented Rent Increases

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava declared a state of emergency over housing affordability as rent continues to skyrocket on Friday.

“Over the last year, we have also become one of the most unaffordable regions in the country,” said Mayor Cava during her press conference.

“I’m putting together a plan called the Building Blocks program, and it will be as a first step. Today, we are announcing a new and additional $13 million into our emergency rental assistance program,” Cava added.

“Our workers, our seniors, our families have been burdened with unprecedented rent increases over 30%, higher than last year. For single mothers, for older adults, for our students, this is simply not an option. It’s not an option for any of us,” Cava continued.

Finally declaring a housing affordability crisis, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and her colleagues face the daunting challenge of trying to make homes more affordable for residents.

“We have become the most unaffordable place in the country,” Levine Cava said Friday, noting that’s “what’s different now.” As a first step, the county mayor announced the Building Blocks Program, an effort to use $13.4 million in federal funding for Miami-Dade’s emergency rental assistance program to help tenants struggling to pay rent.

The program’s key pieces are: The county will pay up to $3,000 a month to people behind on their monthly rent payments by up to a year; if your landlord raises the rent between 1% and 20%, the county will assist by covering up to 20% of your monthly payment for three months; and for tenants hit with rent hikes of more than 20%, the county will pay a portion of that increase.

Residents with an income below 80% of the county’s annual median income are eligible. That includes individuals earning less than $50,650, couples earning less than $57,650, families of three earning less than $65,100 and families of four earning less than $72,300.

Also, last month the county mayor began requiring property owners to give a 60-day notice, rather than the former 30 days, to tenants when their monthly rents are going to increase by 5% or more.

France’s Macron and Le Pen Head for April 24 Election Runoff

PARIS—French leader Emmanuel Macron and challenger Marine Le Pen qualified on Sunday for a presidential election runoff on April 24.

With partial results putting Macron in first place ahead of Le Pen after Sunday’s first-round voting,other major candidates admitted defeat. Except for one candidate, Eric Zemmour, they all urged voters to block Le Pen in two weeks’ time.

“Nothing is decided!,” Macron told supporters, urging all voters to rally behind him on April 24 to stop the right-wing Le Pen from ruling the European Union’s second-largest economy.

Ifop pollsters predicted a very tight runoff, with 51 percent for Macron and 49 percent for Le Pen. The gap is so tight that victory either way is within the margin of error.

Other pollsters offered a slightly bigger margin in favor of Macron, with up to 54 percent. But that was in any case much narrower than in 2017, when Macron beat Le Pen with 66.1 percent of the votes.

Le Pen, who had eaten into Macron’s once-commanding 10-point poll lead in recent weeks thanks to a campaign focused on cost-of-living issues said she was the one to protect the weak and unite a nation tired of its elite.

“What will be at stake on April 24 is a choice of society, a choice of civilization,” she told supporters, who chanted “We will win!” as she told them: “I will bring order back to France.”

Macron, meanwhile, told supporters waving French and EU flags: “The only project that is credible to help purchasing power is ours.”

With 88 percent of the votes counted for Sunday’s first round, Macron garnered 27.41 percent of the votes and Le Pen 24.9 percent. A near total count of the vote was expected for later in the evening.

Conservative candidate Valerie Pecresse warned of “disastrous consequences” if Macron lost, while the Socialists’ Anne Hidalgo urged supporters to vote for him “so that France does not fall into hatred.”

“Not one vote for Le Pen!” added hard-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon, who, according to the estimates, placed third with around 20 percent of the votes.

But they all also had very harsh words for Macron and some of the very unpopular policies of his first mandate as well as an abrasive style that has put off many voters.

“Emmanuel Macron played with fire,” Pecresse told supporters.

US lawmakers welcomed notorious Georgian warlord now boasting of war crimes in Ukraine

Top lawmakers in US Congress hosted Mamuka Mamulashvili, an infamous Georgian Legion warlord who has boasted of authorizing field executions of captive Russian soldiers in Ukraine.

Having taken up arms against Russia for a fifth time, Georgian Legion commander Mamuka Mamulashvili has bragged on video about his unit carrying out field executions of captured Russian soldiers in Ukraine.

While Western media pundits howled about images of dead bodies in the city of Bucha, echoing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy’s accusation that Russia is guilty of “genocide,” they have largely overlooked the apparent admission of atrocities by an avowed ally of the United States who was welcomed on Capitol Hill by senior lawmakers overseeing congressional foreign policy committees.

Having fought in four wars against Russia, and despite allegations that he played a leading role in the massacre of 49 protesters in Kiev’s Maidan Square in 2014, Mamulashvili has taken multiple trips to the United States, where he received a warm welcome from members of Congress, the New York Police Department, and Ukrainian diaspora community.

In an interview this April, Mamulashvili, was asked about a video showing Russian fighters who had been extrajudicially executed in Dmitrovka, a town just five miles from Bucha. Mamulashvili was candid about his unit’s take-no-prisoners tactics, though he has denied involvement in the specific crimes depicted.

“We will not take Russian soldiers, as well as Kadyrovites [Chechnyan fighters]; in any case, we will not take prisoners, not a single person will be captured,” Mamulashvili said, implying that his fighters execute POWs.

The warlord’s battle dress shirt was emblazoned with a patch reading, “Mama says I’m special.”

The Dirty Election: how the cards are stacked in favour of Scott Morrison

If you’d just touched down from Mars, had no idea about Australian politics and tuned in to the ABC’s 7.30 Report last week to watch Leigh Sales interview Scott Morrison, you would have come away thinking this bloke was unbeatable, a PM par excellence. His achievements, his steely conviction utterly fake yet utterly impressive to those who didn’t know better. Michael West reports on a stacked election campaign.

Sales, a veteran ABC interviewer, did not lay a glove on the marketing maestro and the interview ended with Sales smiling, “Thank you Prime Minister”: the sort of sardonic smile which – in the land of Insiderville which is the Canberra Press Gallery, denotes a doff of the cap, an acknowledgement that yes, okay, you sure can spin the proverbial PM. “You’re good, a bit too good”.

There was also the obligatory whine that the PM should come on more often. But why would he when he has the cheesily fawning Paul Murray on Sky, or 2GB, or fan-man Chris Uhlmann on Nine as his go-to?

To get to the point, Labor may be streets ahead in the polls but Scott Morrison is now in his element. His government is a shambles but, with the three major media houses backing him, and the ABC and others truckling to their daily news agendas, Anthony Albanese will have to win this thing, not wait for Morrison to lose it.

The propagandists of News Corp will run hard for Morrison. Already, according to their questionable Newspoll, the gap has narrowed sharply. Sure, they want a contest, it sells their propaganda sheets, but given all the subsidies and favours which Rupert Murdoch, Nine Entertainment and Seven have wrung out of the Coalition they will be surely be barracking for the Coalition and bagging Labor till the cows come home.

Their shrill choir leaders such as Peta Credlin have foreshadowed this campaign. It will be about character, not policy, said Credlin. That’s code for a dirty election. Labor has deliberately chosen this playing field too, and perhaps not unwisely, by embracing its “small target” strategy.

The LNP might be trying to paint Albanese as the “most left-wing leader in history” but in truth the politics of the major parties are not far apart. Morrison has frustrated the right by steering back to the centre. Albanese has backed their tax cuts for the rich and eschewed its formerly sensible reform agendas on the likes of franking credits and negative gearing.

Truth will be no impediment at all to the electioneering of this government, not that it ever has been. And the corporate media will fail, London to a brick, to hold them to account, preferring to frolic in the daily distractions of political theatre.

This bizarre and insulting claim that Morrison and Greg Hunt saved 40,000 lives during the pandemic is a case in point. In fact, their gross failure in aged care to deliver on promises of RAT tests, booster shots and a surge workforce in time actually cost lives. How did they concoct that 40,000, what methodology did they deploy to get to this ridiculous assertion?

These are not the kind of questions the mainstream media asks.

Scott Morrison is now in his element, campaign mode, spin mode, stunt mode, balderdash mode. He’s gone for maximum campaign length, selecting the last viable date for a poll, May 21, and subjecting us all to a nightmarish Trump-fest.

Calling this poll is no exact science. Colleague Mark Sawyer writes this morning that, if first impressions are anything to go by, “Scott Morrison is toast at Election ‘22″.

Border Patrol agents seize over $3M worth of cocaine hidden in papier-mâché crafts

U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations (OFO) at the Laredo Port of Entry seized more than $3 million in alleged cocaine in a commercial truck containing papier-mâché handicrafts.

“Our frontline officers continue to maintain strict vigilance in the commercial truck environment and their effective utilization of training, inspections experience and technology successfully prevented a significant load of cocaine from ever reaching U.S. streets,” said Port Director Albert Flores, Laredo Port of Entry.

On April 8, 2022, a CBP officer assigned to the World Trade Bridge encountered a tractor trailer arriving from Mexico hauling a shipment of papier-mâché of glass handicrafts and referred it for secondary examination. After conducting a thorough secondary examination, which included utilization of non-intrusive inspection (NII) equipment, CBP officers discovered 101 packages containing a total of 427 pounds (193.8 kg) of alleged cocaine concealed within the conveyance. The cocaine had an estimated street value of $3.2 million.

CBP OFO seized the narcotics and an investigation by Homeland Security Investigations special agents remains ongoing.

Massive demonstrations rocked multiple Pakistani cities, including the country’s capital of Islamabad, on Sunday, with thousands taking to the streets to express their support to the deposed Prime Minister Imran Khan. He was ousted by the country’s parliament in a successful no-confidence vote on Saturday. Khan blasted the vote as a foreign-backed regime change operation.

“Never have such crowds come out so spontaneously and in such numbers in our history, rejecting the imported govt led by crooks,” Khan said on Twitter, sharing footage of the protests.

The protests were spearheaded by Khan’s PTI party, which called upon its members and supporters to take to the streets across the country.
