World Bank predicts Ukraine economy shrinking

 

UN-affiliated lender sees Ukrainian GDP plunging by almost half and an 11.2% contraction in Russia amid the conflict

 

The World Bank has taken measure of the economic devastation caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict, predicting double-digit GDP declines in the two countries and recessions in neighboring Belarus and Moldova.

 

Ukraine will be hardest hit, with its economy shrinking by 45.1% in 2022, the UN-affiliated bank said on Sunday in its updated forecast for the region. Russia, which has been hit with unprecedented economic sanctions by the US and its Western allies, will see an estimated 11.2% decline in GDP.

 

The Washington-based bank said some countries in the region will be forced to seek outside help to avert defaulting on their current debts. Emerging markets in Europe and Central Asia will suffer an economic contraction of 4.1% this year, the lender said, reversing its pre-conflict forecast of GDP growth averaging 3%.

 

The war is having a devastating impact on human life and causing economic destruction in both countries,” the World Bank said. It predicted “significant economic losses in the Europe and central Asia region and the rest of the world.”

 

Like two of Ukraine’s immediate neighbors, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan will slide into recession this year as economic effects of the crisis spill over, the bank said. The region’s estimated economic contraction would be twice as severe as the declines in GDP suffered in 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted business activity.

 

The effects of anti-Russia sanctions will ripple across the global economy and will hit former Soviet republics particularly hard as trade is disrupted, according to the revised forecast. “The war’s impacts are cascading through the region’s strong trade, financial and migration linkages, resulting in considerable economic damage to neighboring countries,” the bank said.

 

The lender also offered a “downside scenario” in which the conflict drags on, more sanctions are imposed and commodity prices spike further. In that case,Russia’s GDP would drop an estimated 20%, while Ukraine’s would plunge by 75%.

 

The bank last month announced more than $925 million in additional financing for Ukraine to help provide humanitarian relief. On Friday, the lender warned of a global food crisis as dozens of countries impose export restrictions to conserve their supplies.

 

Moscow sent troops into Ukraine in late February, following Kiev’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements signed in 2014, and Russia’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics in Donetsk and Lugansk. The German- and French-brokered protocols had been designed to normalize the status of those regions within the Ukrainian state.

 

Russia has now demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked and has denied claims it was planning to retake the two republics by force.

Miami-Dade Mayor Declares State of Emergency Over Housing Affordability Due to Unprecedented Rent Increases

 

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava declared a state of emergency over housing affordability as rent continues to skyrocket on Friday.

 

“Over the last year, we have also become one of the most unaffordable regions in the country,” said Mayor Cava during her press conference.

 

“I’m putting together a plan called the Building Blocks program, and it will be as a first step. Today, we are announcing a new and additional $13 million into our emergency rental assistance program,” Cava added.

 

“Our workers, our seniors, our families have been burdened with unprecedented rent increases over 30%, higher than last year. For single mothers, for older adults, for our students, this is simply not an option. It’s not an option for any of us,” Cava continued.

Finally declaring a housing affordability crisis, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and her colleagues face the daunting challenge of trying to make homes more affordable for residents.

 

“We have become the most unaffordable place in the country,” Levine Cava said Friday, noting that’s “what’s different now.” As a first step, the county mayor announced the Building Blocks Program, an effort to use $13.4 million in federal funding for Miami-Dade’s emergency rental assistance program to help tenants struggling to pay rent.

 

The program’s key pieces are: The county will pay up to $3,000 a month to people behind on their monthly rent payments by up to a year; if your landlord raises the rent between 1% and 20%, the county will assist by covering up to 20% of your monthly payment for three months; and for tenants hit with rent hikes of more than 20%, the county will pay a portion of that increase.

 

Residents with an income below 80% of the county’s annual median income are eligible. That includes individuals earning less than $50,650, couples earning less than $57,650, families of three earning less than $65,100 and families of four earning less than $72,300.

 

Also, last month the county mayor began requiring property owners to give a 60-day notice, rather than the former 30 days, to tenants when their monthly rents are going to increase by 5% or more.

Dubbed North Africa’s new ‘Cold War’, the tensions between Morocco and neighboring Algeria threaten to escalate and the consequences of this have a lot more to do with Western meddling in the affairs of the two countries than meets the eye.

 

In August 2021, Algeria’s foreign minister, Ramdane Lamamra, announced that Algiers was severing all diplomatic ties with Rabat. “The Moroccan kingdom has never stopped its hostile actions against Algeria,” he stated at a press conference at the time. Rabat has denied most of the charges laid out against it by the Algerian government.

 

Tensions again escalated on October 31, when Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced the end of their gas supply contract with Rabat. This led to a reported shortage of gas in both Morocco and also Spain, which had previously received gas supplies through the Gazoduc Maghreb Europe (GME) pipeline, despite claims made by Moroccan officials that the move would have little impact. The following day, alleged drone strikes carried out by Morocco directly targeted clearly marked Algerian trucks near the Mauritanian border with the disputed Western Sahara region. The“barbaric attack,” as described by Ennahar, Algeria’s national broadcaster, killed 3 Algerians and generated a large outpour of rage from the Algerian government.

 

Although many of the accusations made against Morocco by Algeria have been strongly denied, they nonetheless have a real impact on public perception of the two sides. An example of such allegations is an announcement on October 13 in which Algerian state-media claimed that the “General Directorate of National Security managed to thwart a conspiracy plot that dates back to 2014” [sic]. To blame for the attack, according to the authorities, was “the Zionist entity [Israel]” and a “North African country,” broadly interpreted to have meant Morocco.

 

What’s interesting here is that the conflict between Morocco and Algeria has not just been limited to affecting Rabat and Algiers alone, but has also implicated several other players; notably France, Israel, Spain, and the Polisario Front that represents the national liberation movement for the Sahrawi people.

 

To get to know more about this conflict, I spoke to Zine Labidine Ghebouli, an analyst and researcher who specializes in the political and security dynamics of Algeria. Ghebouli says that the ‘Cold War of North Africa’ “has already erupted,” claiming that this war will manifest itself in three main ways; the battle for regional supremacy, a propaganda war, and the persecution of dissenting voices. He said that “first you are going to have them [Algeria and Morocco] seeking regional supremacy, through the arms race that we have been seeing for nearly a decade now, but also through the diplomatic race. Morocco obviously normalized relations with Israel so it’s expanding its diplomatic influence. Algeria, on the other hand, is trying to devise diplomatic efforts and we have seen the visits of Foreign Minister Ramdane Lamamra to the Gulf and also to many African countries … so that’s the first way that will make either Algiers or Rabat as the leading regional power.”

 

On the second point of escalation, he states that “you have the war of propaganda,” which “we have been seeing from the official Algerian authorities. Obviously, there are some pro-Moroccan websites that also spread disinformation about Algeria, but so far that hasn’t been the stance of the official Moroccan authorities. On the other hand, Algeria mobilized both the official and unofficial media platforms to target Rabat and social issues in Morocco, economic issues, [and] political issues and we’ve seen a lot of propaganda recently.”

 

Zine Ghebouli then said, on the third way the war will manifest itself, “you have the judicial prosecution of activists, journalists of Algerian origins who may be perceived by Algiers as assets to the Moroccan authorities, we’ve seen with the designation of both the MAK and Rashad movements [alleged Separatist groups] as terrorist organisations … mainly with the MAK that it is [being accused of being] in contact with the Moroccan authorities to impose a security approach and this will continue, that anyone who is in contact with the Moroccan authorities will be designated as an enemy and will be treated as such.”…

France’s Macron and Le Pen Head for April 24 Election Runoff

 

PARIS—French leader Emmanuel Macron and challenger Marine Le Pen qualified on Sunday for a presidential election runoff on April 24.

 

With partial results putting Macron in first place ahead of Le Pen after Sunday’s first-round voting,other major candidates admitted defeat. Except for one candidate, Eric Zemmour, they all urged voters to block Le Pen in two weeks’ time.

 

“Nothing is decided!,” Macron told supporters, urging all voters to rally behind him on April 24 to stop the right-wing Le Pen from ruling the European Union’s second-largest economy.

 

Ifop pollsters predicted a very tight runoff, with 51 percent for Macron and 49 percent for Le Pen. The gap is so tight that victory either way is within the margin of error.

 

Other pollsters offered a slightly bigger margin in favor of Macron, with up to 54 percent. But that was in any case much narrower than in 2017, when Macron beat Le Pen with 66.1 percent of the votes.

 

Le Pen, who had eaten into Macron’s once-commanding 10-point poll lead in recent weeks thanks to a campaign focused on cost-of-living issues said she was the one to protect the weak and unite a nation tired of its elite.

 

“What will be at stake on April 24 is a choice of society, a choice of civilization,” she told supporters, who chanted “We will win!” as she told them: “I will bring order back to France.”

 

Macron, meanwhile, told supporters waving French and EU flags: “The only project that is credible to help purchasing power is ours.”

 

With 88 percent of the votes counted for Sunday’s first round, Macron garnered 27.41 percent of the votes and Le Pen 24.9 percent. A near total count of the vote was expected for later in the evening.

 

Conservative candidate Valerie Pecresse warned of “disastrous consequences” if Macron lost, while the Socialists’ Anne Hidalgo urged supporters to vote for him “so that France does not fall into hatred.”

 

“Not one vote for Le Pen!” added hard-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon, who, according to the estimates, placed third with around 20 percent of the votes.

 

But they all also had very harsh words for Macron and some of the very unpopular policies of his first mandate as well as an abrasive style that has put off many voters.

 

“Emmanuel Macron played with fire,” Pecresse told supporters.

While Western media pundits howled about images of dead bodies in the city of Bucha, echoing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy’s accusation that Russia is guilty of “genocide,” they have largely overlooked the apparent admission of atrocities by an avowed ally of the United States who was welcomed on Capitol Hill by senior lawmakers overseeing congressional foreign policy committees.

This time, it's his cleverly titled new track "if jesus saves, she's my type." It's a playful new track which comes with the news of his long-awaited debut album Rx, which is coming April 8, just before he takes the stage for another debut, performing at Coachella, which is making a comeback after its two-year hiatus.

 

The song plays with the idea of the many religious parallels in the way some find "God." To Role Model, God is a woman, more specifically the girl he fell in love with during one of the lowest points in his life.

 

In the accompanying video, Pillsbury is a small-town pastor who is convinced he has found God in the shape of a beautiful girl wearing a short denim shirt and hoop earrings. She walks in as a metaphorical Jesus.

The Dirty Election: how the cards are stacked in favour of Scott Morrison

 

If you’d just touched down from Mars, had no idea about Australian politics and tuned in to the ABC’s 7.30 Report last week to watch Leigh Sales interview Scott Morrison, you would have come away thinking this bloke was unbeatable, a PM par excellence. His achievements, his steely conviction utterly fake yet utterly impressive to those who didn’t know better. Michael West reports on a stacked election campaign.

 

Sales, a veteran ABC interviewer, did not lay a glove on the marketing maestro and the interview ended with Sales smiling, “Thank you Prime Minister”: the sort of sardonic smile which – in the land of Insiderville which is the Canberra Press Gallery, denotes a doff of the cap, an acknowledgement that yes, okay, you sure can spin the proverbial PM. “You’re good, a bit too good”.

 

There was also the obligatory whine that the PM should come on more often. But why would he when he has the cheesily fawning Paul Murray on Sky, or 2GB, or fan-man Chris Uhlmann on Nine as his go-to?

 

To get to the point, Labor may be streets ahead in the polls but Scott Morrison is now in his element. His government is a shambles but, with the three major media houses backing him, and the ABC and others truckling to their daily news agendas, Anthony Albanese will have to win this thing, not wait for Morrison to lose it.

 

The propagandists of News Corp will run hard for Morrison. Already, according to their questionable Newspoll, the gap has narrowed sharply. Sure, they want a contest, it sells their propaganda sheets, but given all the subsidies and favours which Rupert Murdoch, Nine Entertainment and Seven have wrung out of the Coalition they will be surely be barracking for the Coalition and bagging Labor till the cows come home.

Their shrill choir leaders such as Peta Credlin have foreshadowed this campaign. It will be about character, not policy, said Credlin. That’s code for a dirty election. Labor has deliberately chosen this playing field too, and perhaps not unwisely, by embracing its “small target” strategy.

 

The LNP might be trying to paint Albanese as the “most left-wing leader in history” but in truth the politics of the major parties are not far apart. Morrison has frustrated the right by steering back to the centre. Albanese has backed their tax cuts for the rich and eschewed its formerly sensible reform agendas on the likes of franking credits and negative gearing.

 

Truth will be no impediment at all to the electioneering of this government, not that it ever has been. And the corporate media will fail, London to a brick, to hold them to account, preferring to frolic in the daily distractions of political theatre.

 

This bizarre and insulting claim that Morrison and Greg Hunt saved 40,000 lives during the pandemic is a case in point. In fact, their gross failure in aged care to deliver on promises of RAT tests, booster shots and a surge workforce in time actually cost lives. How did they concoct that 40,000, what methodology did they deploy to get to this ridiculous assertion?

 

These are not the kind of questions the mainstream media asks.

 

Scott Morrison is now in his element, campaign mode, spin mode, stunt mode, balderdash mode. He’s gone for maximum campaign length, selecting the last viable date for a poll, May 21, and subjecting us all to a nightmarish Trump-fest.

 

Calling this poll is no exact science. Colleague Mark Sawyer writes this morning that, if first impressions are anything to go by, “Scott Morrison is toast at Election ‘22″.

Enormous California home depot fire visible from outer space

California firefighters were working to contain a massive blaze at a San Jos? home depot that could be seen from outer space Saturday evening.

 

Residents were asked to avoid the commercial area in the southern part of the city as the fire department battled the five alarm fire, officials said.

 

No injuries had been reported from the fire. It was unclear exactly when or how it started.

 

"If you live/work in the area of this fire on [Blossom Hill] and smell smoke, we recommend that you shelter in place. Close all doors and windows to minimize smoke from getting inside," the SDFD tweeted.

 

A pet hospital in the area had been evacuated and a meeting place was announced for owners to pick up their sick

 

A woman who lived 3 miles away from the scene alerted the department on Twitter that debris from the inferno was "falling on my property."

 

The National Weather Service said heat-sensing satellites above the atmosphere were able to detect the humongous fire.

NPR reporter breaks ranks with outlet to condemn their handling of Hunter Biden story

 

"The 'Hunter Biden laptop' investigation may end up being a tax case, a hill of beans, or something else. But what it's always been is a story," says Laura Sullivan.

 

An NPR reporter with over 18 years of experience at the outlet decided to call out her own bosses on Thursday afternoon over how their editorial management decided to largely ignore covering the leaked contents of Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop.

 

"Add @NPR to the list. Newsroom editors called it 'not a real story.' The 'Hunter Biden laptop' investigation may end up being a tax case, a hill of beans, or something else. But what it's always been is a story."

 

What the investigative reporter was responding to was a tweet by Glenn Greenwald about how there has been a lack of public apologies from establishment media outlets for their initial flawed handling of the Hunter Biden laptop scandal.

 

The viewpoint that people like Anne Applebaum of The Atlantic still maintains is that the Hunter Biden story is "totally irrelevant."

Greenwald applauded Sullivan’s bravery to call out the shortcomings of her employer.

 

Political scientist Ian Bremmer expressed admiration for her admission, adding it was easier for him to freely talk as he didn’t have "anyone that can fire me."

 

At the time in October 2020 when NPR’s Managing Editor Terence Samuels publicly denounced the Hunter Biden story as a waste of time, Sullivan issued a similar condemnation of her employer.

 

In April 2021, NPR had to issue a significant correction in their reporting, after initially claiming that US intelligence officials "discredited" the Hunter Biden laptop story. The outlet had to admit that wasn’t true.

 

The resurgence of widespread attention on the scandals surrounding Joe Biden’s son were enough to encourage House Judiciary committee Republicans to send out a public request letter this week. It was addressed to the 51 intelligence community officials who infamously published a group statement that pushed the claim that the Hunter Biden story was so-called "Russian disinformation."

 

Republicans want answers about how the group’s statement came about in the first place. This as The New York Times and Washington Post have since acknowledged the laptop’s legitimacy.

Meanwhile, a Hunter Biden whistleblower recently fled to Switzerland over his promises that there are recoverable deleted files from the Hunter Biden hard drive still yet to be published.

Ex-PM Imran Khan has said the country headed for a new “freedom struggle” blasting his ouster as a “US-backed regime change”

 

Massive demonstrations rocked multiple Pakistani cities, including the country’s capital of Islamabad, on Sunday, with thousands taking to the streets to express their support to the deposed Prime Minister Imran Khan. He was ousted by the country’s parliament in a successful no-confidence vote on Saturday. Khan blasted the vote as a foreign-backed regime change operation.

 

“Never have such crowds come out so spontaneously and in such numbers in our history, rejecting the imported govt led by crooks,” Khan said on Twitter, sharing footage of the protests.

 

The protests were spearheaded by Khan’s PTI party, which called upon its members and supporters to take to the streets across the country.

We've never been tested, we haven't taken the injections. We are all sick af at home, this is not your regular cold or flu.

 

My son picked it at school a week ago (we haven't been anywhere else so that's the vector, also confirmed by the number of absences being reported).

 

This thing is absolutely crippling, localised intense pain in different organs for hours at a time, one at a time: head, lungs, liver, kidneys. Intense pain. It's not the usual cold/flu.

 

We've known for months they need a disease for their strategy, and we know they might need a real one this time. I think this is it.

 

I fear this may be injected people spreading disease. There are other possibilities, however given we live in total segregation this is the most plausible one for me.
