The first man to blame his involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot on former President Donald Trump was found guilty on Thursday.
A federal jury deliberated for less than three hours before finding Dustin Byron Thompson, 38, guilty on six counts, The Associated Press reported.
"If the president is giving you almost an order to do something, I felt obligated to do that," Thompson testified Wednesday.
Thompson stressed that he was shocked he joined the riot. He admitted that he stole a coat rack and a bottle of bourbon from a Senate office.
"I can’t believe the things that I did," he said. "Mob mentality and group think is very real and very dangerous."
The court found Thompson guilty of obstructing Congress, stealing government property, entering or remaining in a restricted area, demonstrating in a Capitol, disruptive conduct in a Capitol and disorderly conduction in a restricted building, according to the AP.
The obstruction charge is Thompson's only felony while the others constitute misdemeanors.

MSNBC host warns of 'massive, life and globe-altering' consequences for free speech on Twitter
MSNBC anchor Katy Tur joined the meltdown by many on the left Thursday over the possibility of Elon Musk buying out Twitter and bringing free speech with fewer restrictions to the microblogging platform.
Musk revealed on Thursday morning that he had made an offer to purchase 100% of Twitter for $43 billion. The bid resulted in many on the left panicking over the future of Democracy in the belief that Musk would ease moderation on the platform.
Among those panicking was Tur, who interviewed tech journalist Kara Fisher about the development on MSNBC.
"There are real and devastating consequences for using that platform to lie, and we've seen it happen," said Tur.
"Yes!" agreed Fisher.
"I wonder," Tur added, stammering. "You know in talking about this, you know, it's kinda funny, oh, Elon Musk wants to buy it, but there are massive, life and globe-altering consequences for just letting people run wild on the thing.”
"Yes, one hundred percent, but that's Facebook, is really, where the real action is in that, so, this is a very small company. It has an outsized influence cuz media people like it, politicians, world leaders, and Elon Musk.
Swisher went on to joke that Musk sounded like a supervillain and said that the billionaire believes he is the Marvel superhero Iron Man. She also pointed out that Wall Street appeared not to take the offer seriously since the price of Twitter shock had not risen after he made the announcement.
Tur also expressed serious concern that Musk might allow former President Donald Trump back on Twitter after he was permanently banned in 2021.
When asked why he was interested in controlling Twitter, Musk explained that the platform could be pivotal to the development of freedom around the globe.
"My strong intuitive sense is that having a public platform that is maximally trusted and broadly inclusive is extremely important to the future of civilization," Musk explained at Ted Talk 2022 in Vancouver, Canada.

Syria accuses Israel of attack
Air defenses intercepted some missiles, Damascus said, but those that got through caused property damage
Israeli missiles targeted the countryside around Damascus late on Thursday, the Syrian military said, adding that some of the projectiles were intercepted by the country’s air defenses. The rockets allegedly came from the direction of the occupied Golan Heights, and caused material damage but no casualties.
The attack came around 11:20 local time, and targeted western Damascus governorate, a Syrian military spokesman told the news agency SANA. Syrian air defenses “confronted the aggression's missiles and shot down some of them,” the military added, noting that the missiles that got through caused property damage but no injuries or deaths.
Israel Defense Forces (IDF) did not comment on Syrian claims. Residents of northern Israel told local media they had seen increased activity by Israeli warplanes.
Thursday evening’s strikes come just five days after another attack, which allegedly came from Lebanese airspace.
Tel Aviv frequently launches missile attacks on Syrian territory. On rare occasions the Israeli government officially acknowledges the strikes, they are said to be self-defensive moves against Iranian personnel in Syria. Damascus has condemned the attacks as acts of aggression and violations of Syrian sovereignty, to no avail.
Iran and the Shi’a Hezbollah militia have both backed the Syrian government against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists and the Turkish-backed jihadists affiliate with Al-Qaeda, which have sought to overthrow the government in Damascus since 2011.
