There are only a handful of Western journalists on the ground in Donbass, while the Western mainstream press is rubber-stamping fake news about the Ukrainian crisis using the same templates it previously exploited in Iraq, Libya and Syria, says Dutch independent journalist Sonja van den Ende.

Sonja van den Ende, an independent journalist from Rotterdam, Netherlands, went to the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics as an embedded reporter with the Russian army to see how the special operation is unfolding with her own eyes.

The sound of shelling and explosion does not frighten her: she’s gotten used to it. Seven years ago, van den Ende worked in Syria, months before the Russians stepped in at the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and changed the tide. The parallels between the Western mainstream press’ coverage of the Syrian and the Ukrainian conflicts are striking, according to her.

“They lie continuously about everything just to implement their own agenda,” van den Ende. “Like in Syria, President Assad was ‘the murderer’ and now President Putin is ‘the butcher.’ They had used this script for many years in Iraq, Venezuela and [other] countries which don’t comply with their agenda; they need a bad “guy”. But they (media) are not even there on the ground, they can’t judge. Only a handful of journalists from the West are here: Graham Philips, Patrick Lancaster, Anne-Laure Bonnel and me.”

However, this is not the only parallel, according to the Dutch journalist. She has drawn attention to Kiev’s fake reports and “false flag” operations including the Snake Island hoax, hype over Russia’s alleged “attack” on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), the now-debunked story of Russia’s “strike” on a Mariupol hospital, and the most recent Bucha provocation, to name but a few. Van den Ende says that it resembles nothing so much as jihadists’ false flags and the White Helmet’s staged “gas attacks”. She specifically recalls the 4 April 2017 chemical provocation in Khan Sheikhun, Idlib, which was debunked by investigative reporters including Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Seymour Hersh.

“The same happened in Bucha,” says the Dutch journalist. “Many witnesses are saying that the Russian army left on 30 March. Even the Ukrainian military who came in on 1 April didn’t report about corpses on the streets. This happened on 3 April, according to the Western media. Also, evidence is saying that the bodies had white armbands, the sign of the Russian army, the soldiers wear them. So the soldiers are killing the Russian Ukrainians? No way.”

Ukrainian Neo-Nazism is No Myth

Van den Ende talked to many Ukrainian civilians while travelling across Donbass. According to her, nearly everyone condemned the Kiev government for prohibiting the Russian language and depriving them of many cultural and domestic human rights.

“The majority of the people whom I spoke with were very happy that the [Russian special] operation has started,” the Dutch journalist says. “Of course, nobody wants violence and war, but they have been suffering already eight years from the war, carnage and destruction by the Ukrainian forces. The worst were the Nazi battalions, who were fighting along with the regular army.”

Ukrainian neo-Nazism is not a myth, emphasises van den Ende. When she visited the Ukrainian port city of Odessa in 2016 and 2017 she noticed the fascist sentiment which has been spreading across the nation for quite a while. Actually, Ukrainian Nazism has been there since the Second World War, says the Dutch journalist.

The ideological successors of Stepan Bandera, the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), the 14th SS-Volunteer Division “Galicia,” and the Nachtigall Battalion went underground during the Soviet period. However, after many years these forces are alive again with the US, the UK and EU using them to destabilise Ukraine, she says. Previously, these Western geopolitical actors much in the same vein used Islamists to unseat Assad, adds the journalist.

Feeling Protected at Long Last

The West is continuously trying to blame Russia for all the damage inflicted on Ukrainian villages and towns. However, Eastern Ukrainian eye-witnesses say that most of destruction in the civilian areas was caused by the retreating Ukrainian army and neo-Nazi formations, including the notorious Azov Battalions, according to the Dutch journalist. In addition to using civilian facilities as shields, the Ukrainian military are reported to have indiscriminately shelled the positions they left and cede to the Russian forces.

To illustrate her point, van den Ende describes the shelling of a hospital in Volnovakha, in the Donetsk People’s Republic. The building was not bombed from the air, but attacked with grenades and rockets, she says, citing a Volnovakha resident.

“The West claims it was bombed by the Russians, but as a lady told me, that she worked there all her life, and that the Ukrainian [military] – who were quartered in the hospital – shelled and destroyed the facility and her house, which was next to the hospital.”

According to the Dutch journalist, Eastern Ukrainians are treated very well by the Russian army and regularly receive humanitarian aid in most locations. What’s more, the locals say that at long last they feel protected, she adds.

Fierce fight between the Ukrainian armed forces and neo-Nazi battalions on the one side and the Russia-backed DPR and LPR militias on the other side left many houses ruined. However, the people of Donbass have not given up, highlights the journalist.

“As a woman said: ‘We are strong, we can rebuild it, for our children and grandchildren, to have peace,’” notes van den Ende.

Is Russia Losing an Information War?

Some observers suggest that Russia is losing the information war with the West. The Western Big Media machine is working day and night with the backing of Big Tech, while most Russian news outlets have been either censored or completely silenced in the Western countries.

“No, Russia is not losing the information war completely,” argues van den Ende. “I think it’s up to us, the handful of Westerners, to awaken the majority of Westerners who are still asleep and getting bombarded with fake news and made-up stories day by day.”

One should bear in mind that this conflict is being fanned by the Western politicians in the first place, says the Dutch journalist. According to her, the West did completely the same in Syria but has largely lost that war.

The world is changing and the Western establishment has yet to reconcile itself with the emerging multipolar world order, according to van den Ende. She notes that Russian President Vladimir Putin outlined the beginning of this change in his 2007 Munich speech.

Although they opted to neglect his words at that time, it is becoming obvious that a unipolar world is gone for good, the journalist concludes.

TOWARDS A SANE MARIJUANA POLICY FOR OKLAHOMA AND AMERICA

Since the passage of state question 788, Oklahoma has experienced the boom of a billion dollar industry creating around 45,000 jobs in our state. At this point, 47 States now have some form of medical cannabis program. Unfortunately, that boom has also flooded our State with operations led by organized crime cartels. While Oklahoma is making progress against bad actors, we need action at the federal level, now. Lack of action has allowed criminal operators to move from state to state for over a decade, regardless of if the system is one of over regulation and high taxes like California, or a free market system like Oklahoma. Being criminals, they ignore whatever state laws exist. This will continue without substantial federal action.

As a Pastor, I have never used marijuana. However, the people of our state and nation overwhelmingly support its use for medicine. Our Government must respect this, but take action to ensure their safety and our national security. In Oklahoma, we have seen first-hand the problems created by our federal officials failing to act on this issue. States are left to fend for themselves against powerful crime syndicates who exploit new state laws. In fact, these criminal organizations are funneling money overseas to our greatest geopolitical adversary, China. How can we fight off this external threat, while allowing it to exist in our own backyard?

Beyond this clear and present danger, there are other real issues with marijuana that must be addressed immediately. Legitimate businesses are denied access to banking, this forces them to deal mostly in cash making them targets for robbery and murder. Businesses should also be allowed to deduct normal expenses in tax filings, which is currently disallowed. This increases their costs making them less competitive against illicit market forces. People are forced to be dependent on big pharma for health issues that may be better treated with plant based medicine. We need federal action that respects a state’s right to govern its own program, doesn’t overburden business or consumers with costs and fees, and provides resources to take action against the bad actors. There is actually precedent for this at the federal level.

In 2018, the Farm Bill legalized production of Industrial Hemp. Both hemp and marijuana are the same plant, cannabis. The difference is a legal definition, hemp is cannabis grown with less than 0.3% THC and marijuana is cannabis grown with more than 0.3% THC. Failure by the current administration has allowed for hemp to be concentrated into marijuana after being grown and legally sold online in all 50 states. We need to move swiftly to address cannabis policy as a whole. Nothing less than national security and public safety are on the line.

My opponent, James Lankford, fought hard for SQ788, the Medical Marijuana Legalization Initiative, to be rejected by the people of Oklahoma. In fact, Lankford WENT ON RECORD with his thoughts of what a medical marijuana program in Oklahoma would do to our State. None of the wise prognostications of Mr. Lankford have come true. In fact, like with other issues, fear, uncertainty, and doubt seem to be the go to stance of “look away” Lankford.

Last week the US House of Representatives voted to decriminalize the possession of marijuana. Since Oklahoma has legalized medicinal marijuana I don't think possession is a federal crime. I would vote in the US Senate for this house-passed measure. I am calling on Senator Lankford to tell us how he intends to vote. If elected, I will bring the Oklahoma Standard to Washington and work to take this issue head on, unlike James Lankford who continues to look away from these problems and is complicit in the Biden administration’s failure and broken promise to address cannabis.

Twitter CEO tells employees company not 'held hostage' by Musk offer-source

April 14 (Reuters) - Twitter (TWTR.N) Chief Executive Officer Parag Agrawal sought to reassure employees during an all-hands meeting on Thursday that the company was not being "held hostage" by news of Elon Musk's offer to buy the company, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.

As Agrawal took questions from staff that were posted on the company's Slack messaging service, he encouraged employees to remain focused and told them "we as employees control what happens," said the source, who did not want to be identified because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Agrawal responded that the board was acting in the best interest of shareholders.

"I have a strong point of view that people who are critical of our service, their voice is something that we must emphasize so that we can learn and get better," he said.

Lansing — Activist and real estate broker Ryan Kelley of Allendale became the fifth Michigan Republican to file petition signatures to run for governor Wednesday, saying "election integrity" is the top issue across the state.

Kelley, 40, a first-time candidate, gained attention in 2020 as an organizer and speaker at protests against COVID-19 restrictions and against the results of the presidential election.

Kelley has vowed on his first day in office to cancel contracts with the three companies that provide equipment, including tabulators, for Michigan's elections. It's a promise that experts say he won't be able to fulfill and would lead to inaccuracies in the counting of votes.

However, Kelley argued Wednesday there are questions about the machines and emphasized that Democrats have also previously criticized them.

"There are so many questions here that we need to get rid of these machines," Kelley added. "We need to forge a new way. Maybe, there are electronics involved. But there needs to be a process in place for auditing them."

April 14 (Reuters) - "My offer is my best and final offer."

Elon Musk's $43 billion bid for Twitter (TWTR.N) takes a page out of Warren Buffett's take-it-or-leave-it playbook. But investment bankers, investors and analysts said he needed a blowout bid and more details on his financing for this strategy to work. They added that Musk's track record of reversing his positions also weighs against him.

Buffett is known for clinching large deals through his conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway Inc (BRKa.N), such as the $11.6 billion deal to buy property and casualty reinsurer Alleghany Corp (Y.N) and his $37 billion acquisition of aerospace equipment maker Precision Castparts Corp, by making only one offer and refusing to negotiate.

These offers were viewed as fair by their acquisition targets and were backed by committed financing from Berkshire Hathaway. Musk's bid, on the other hand, was deemed too low by the market and too thin on financing details.

In 2018, Musk, who is the chief executive and a co-founder of luxury electric carmaker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O), tweeted that there was "funding secured" for a $72 billion deal to take Tesla private but did not move ahead with an offer. He and Tesla each paid $20 million in civil fines, and Musk stepped down as Tesla's chairman to resolve U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission claims that he defrauded investors.

"Warren has demonstrated over 40 acquisitions in 60 years that when he says something, he does it. His word has enormous value. With Elon, I wouldn't trust him, … there's no reliability there," said Lawrence Cunningham, a law professor at George Washington University who has written extensively on Buffett.

Musk and Buffett did not respond to requests for comment.

Musk's cash offer of $54.20 a share, which values the company at $43 billion, represents a 38% premium to Twitter's April 1 close, the last trading day before his 9.1% stake in the social media platform was made public. But it is lower than where Twitter shares were trading as recently as November. For most of 2021, the shares traded at more than $60.

Uninvolved investment bankers say the closest comparison would be PayPal Holdings Inc's (PYPL.O) offer for Pinterest Inc (PINS.N), which the payments firm withdrew last October after a negative investor response to its interest. The offer valued Pinterest at 17.4 times sales. By comparison, Musk's offer values Twitter at only 8.6 times sales.

Twitter shares ended trading on Thursday at $45.08, a 1.75% drop since Musk unveiled his $54.20 per share offer, reflecting wide investor skepticism that a deal will happen.

"I don't think the Twitter board will have a really hard time saying no to this deal. It's not an excessive premium and it's not excessively valued now," said Chris Pultz, portfolio manager for merger arbitrage at Kellner Capital.

A Twitter spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.

FINANCING DETAILS THIN

Musk sold more than $15 billion worth of his Tesla shares last year, about 10% of his stake in the electric car maker, partly to settle a tax obligation.

It's not clear how much of that Musk now has available for a Twitter bid, and it's possible that he could sell more Tesla shares or borrow against them. He provided no details about his financing in a regulatory filing on Thursday.

A leveraged buyout is typically 60% to 80% financed with debt, so Musk would likely have to come up with an equity check of at least $10 billion. He could get partners, such as private equity firms, to help fund his contribution.

Another question is banks' willingness to provide debt for the deal given the uncertainty of how Twitter would be run if owned by Musk. He has criticized Twitter's current management but he has not disclosed who the replacement would be. He has also spoken against Twitter's relying on advertising, despite its comprising the majority of its revenue. Morgan Stanley (MS.N) is Musk's lead bank working on the bid.

Musk said in the offer letter that he would reconsider his position as a shareholder if Twitter rejects his offer. Later on Thursday, however, he hinted at the possibility of a hostile bid whereby he would bypass Twitter's board.

He tweeted that Twitter shareholders should get to vote on the deal and posted a poll asking for Twitter users' opinion on the subject. Typically, a company will put a deal to a shareholder vote only once its board of directors has approved it….

Syria accuses Israel of attack

Air defenses intercepted some missiles, Damascus said, but those that got through caused property damage

Israeli missiles targeted the countryside around Damascus late on Thursday, the Syrian military said, adding that some of the projectiles were intercepted by the country’s air defenses. The rockets allegedly came from the direction of the occupied Golan Heights, and caused material damage but no casualties.

The attack came around 11:20 local time, and targeted western Damascus governorate, a Syrian military spokesman told the news agency SANA. On rare occasions the Israeli government officially acknowledges the strikes, they are said to be self-defensive moves against Iranian personnel in Syria. Damascus has condemned the attacks as acts of aggression and violations of Syrian sovereignty, to no avail.

Iran and the Shi’a Hezbollah militia have both backed the Syrian government against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists and the Turkish-backed jihadists affiliate with Al-Qaeda, which have sought to overthrow the government in Damascus since 2011.
