To most people, former President Barack Obamaâs tweet about the brutal terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka on Sunday read as standard post-presidential material: correct, sensible, and essentially anodyne.
The attacks on tourists and Easter worshippers in Sri Lanka are an attack on humanity. On a day devoted to love, redemption, and renewal, we pray for the victims and stand with the people of Sri Lanka.

But then some right-wingers noticed that other prominent figures on the left, including Hillary Clinton and JuliĂĄn Castro, had used the phrase Easter worshippers too. Soon, a suspicion arose: âEaster worshippersâ is a euphemism used by âpeople who donât want to say âChristians.â â âWeâre actually called Christians not âEaster worshippersâ wouldnât hurt to maybe just say that,â a National Review writer tweeted. Obama and friends âcould not bring themselves to identify the victims of the attacks as âChristians,â â Breitbart huffed, deeming the phrase a âSympathy Snub.â An op-ed in the Washington Times called Obama and Clinton âanti-Christian.â
