Azovstal is Ukraine’s third largest steel producer, with 15 percent of the country’s total steel output. The company is a large exporter of steel slabs and steel billets. The company also suppHes steel strips to steel pipe producers throughout the CIS. Azovstal is a large pro¬ ducer of other long steel products, including railways and beams. The company is majority-owned by Metinvest, the metals company that is wholly owned by Ukrainian business conglomerate System Capital Management (SCM). This alliance gives Azovstal access to materials through SCM-owned coking coal producers and iron ore producers. Azovstal also benefits from this alliance on the sales side, from its SCM connection with one of the largest pipe makers in the CIS, Khartsysk Pipe. Azovstal also benefits from a favorable location near Black Sea ports, reducing the transportation costs of exports.^
