Facebook briefly suspends Palestinian news page following al-Aqsa raid coverage

 

Al-Qastal says suspension came after its extensive coverage of the violent Israeli raid, when two of its reporters were wounded

 

acebook briefly suspended the page of a Palestinian news site following its rolling coverage of the violent Israeli raid on al-Aqsa Mosque on Friday.

 

The Al-Qastal news site said on Saturday that Facebook had deleted its page without warning or explanation, causing it to lose thousands of followers. Hours later, however, the page announced it has been reinstated.

 

"Al-Qastal page is finally back after great efforts from its friends and lovers of al-Aqsa and al-Quds, who did not abandon it," it said in a statement to Twitter.

 

Earlier, the news site said that its Facebook page had been deleted "without any introductions or advance warning… due to its extensive coverage of events of Jerusalem and al-Aqsa Mosque, despite the strict adherence to Facebook publishing standards".

 

It remains unclear why Facebook had suspended Al-Qastal's Arabic news page. The bilingual Jerusalem-based outlet accused the social media platform of yielding to pressure from Israeli authorities who aim to "silence the voices of Jerusalemites," according to its intitial statement.

 

Earlier on Friday, Al-Qastal confirmed that Israeli forces had targeted two of its reporters during the unrest in East Jerusalem's al-Aqsa Mosque.

 

More than 150 people were wounded and at least 400 arrested by Israeli forces who attacked worshippers inside the mosque in a four-hour raid.

 

Al-Qastal confirmed that Israeli forces had shot a stun grenade at the head of one of its reporters, Nesreen Salem, during her coverage of the assaults. Reporter Mohammed Samreen was also wounded, with a rubber-coated steel bullet in the leg. He was later detained in the mosque's courtyard then taken to the Al Mascobiya interrogation centre, al-Qastal said.

 

It added that Facebook had previously imposed restrictions on its page without any explanation.

Censorship of Palestinians

 

Meta, the California-based multinational conglomerate that owns Facebook and Instagram, has often been accused of censoring the experiences of Palestinians and their narrative on its platforms.

 

Hours after the Israeli raid on Friday, Dutch-Palestinian supermodel Bella Hadid claimed she was "shadow banned" by Instagram for posting about Palestine. Omar Suleiman, a prominent American-Muslim preacher, also claimed on Friday that his account was restricted.

 

Earlier this year, a Palestinian news page with over a million-and-a-half followers on Facebook was forced to shut down its operations in Jerusalem after the social media giant banned its account.

 

The Maydan al-Quds news network covered stories from Jerusalem for more than 18 months.

Boston University Professor Ibram X. Kendi declares Republicans 'The Party of White Supremacy' and claims conservative efforts to limit teaching of critical race theory are really 'grooming' children to become racist

 

A professor at Boston University called Republicans 'the party of white supremacy' and not the 'party of parents,' despite the GOP 'branding' themselves as such.

 

Ibram X. Kendi, Boston University's Andrew W. Mellon professor in the Humanities and Director of the Center for Antiracist Research, took aim at the GOP in an op-ed for The Atlantic, citing Republican opposition to critical race theory as a reason why they're 'clearly' not the party of parents.

 

'This Republican Party is not the party of any group of parents, but the party of white supremacy,' Kendi wrote.

 

'The Republican Party is clearly not the party of parents. The Republican Party is certainly not the party of parents of color. But is the Republican Party even the party of white parents?'

 

'(They are) not the party of parents raising white kids. The Republican Party is not the party of parents raising girls, raising trans kids, raising kids of color, raising queer kids, raising poor kids, raising immigrant kids.'

 

'The Republican Party is making it harder for all of these kids to learn about themselves and their histories,' Kendi went on to write.

 

'(The GOP) is stripping parents and educators of their collective ability to protect vulnerable children from being indoctrinated by—or victimized by—the scourge of white supremacy.'

 

Kendi called Republican efforts to 'brand' itself as the 'party of parents' a 'myth,' on the scale of 'the great lie that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump.'

 

He added that the party has built that reputation on 'false conceptual building blocks.'

 

Kendi also noted in his editorial that it's a common refrain among Democrats that 'Republican politicians care about white children,' though he claims that '[banning] anti-racist education is harmful to white children' as well.

 

According to Kendi, if Republican politicians indeed care about white children, 'they would not be ignoring or downplaying or defending or bolstering the principal racial threat facing white youth today.'

 

That threat, according to Kendi? 'White supremacy.'

 

'Instead of focusing on this very real threat, Republican politicians—to justify Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law—have cited QAnon conspiracy theories about public schools being overrun by child predators who are "grooming" children to be gay,' Kendi wrote.

 

'A spokesperson for Governor Ron DeSantis reframed the "Don’t Say Gay" bill as an "anti-grooming" bill. But if QAnon Republicans really cared about white children, then they would be worried about white-supremacist grooming.'

 

'This is the grooming that parents of all children should be worried about.'

Oil Mogul Bankrolls Attempt To Buy Democratic Primary

 

To crush Nina Turner, oil mogul taps strategic petroleum reserve of cash for Shontel Brown.

 

A super PAC bankrolled by a fossil fuel magnate is launching last-minute ads to try to crush the congressional candidacy of a leading proponent of a Green New Deal as scientists warn that oil and gas emissions are making the planet unlivable. If successful, the gambit would deliver an intimidating message from the fossil fuel industry to other Democratic candidates pressing the government to address the climate crisis.

 

One month after Samson Energy mogul Stacy Schusterman poured $2 million into DMFI PAC, the group purchased TV ads starting Monday to boost Rep. Shontel Brown (D-Ohio) in her primary campaign rematch against former Ohio State Sen. Nina Turner in a newly redrawn Cleveland congressional district. The primary election date is May 3.

 

Last year, DMFI PAC spent $1.9 million attacking Turner and promoting Brown, helping the latter win the seat in a special election. The group also spent $1.4 million attacking Sanders during his 2020 campaign.

 

Turner, who co-chaired Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (Ind.-Vt.) 2020 presidential campaign, has been campaigning for a Green New Deal and pressing the Biden administration to ban fracking. Brown has declined to co-sponsor some of House Democrats’ most high-profile climate legislation, including the Climate Emergency Act — even after United Nations scientists’ recent dire warning about the crisis.

 

While Brown’s campaign website says she supports “the principles laid out in the Green New Deal,” she has not co-sponsored the measure in Congress.

 

Schusterman chairs Oklahoma-based Samson Energy, whose website describes it as a company that “was formed to allow the Schusterman family to remain in the oil and gas exploration and production business following their sale of Samson Investment Company in 2011.” The company has been one of the country’s largest per-well emitters of greenhouse gas emissions.

Biden, accountant hit with IRS whistleblower claim that prez owes at least $127K

"President Biden and his accountant are facing new IRS whistleblower complaints alleging that Biden owes at least $127,000 in back taxes.

 

The complaints were filed by Chris Jacobs, a former Republican aide on Capitol Hill, to coincide with Monday’s federal tax filing deadline.

 

“Federal agencies must implement laws on a non-partisan basis,” Jacobs told The Post. “The fact that the IRS did not audit Joe Biden’s 2017 through 2019 returns, despite several articles publicly raising questions about the propriety of his actions, raises questions about how the IRS administers our nation’s tax laws, and whether political considerations played a role in the IRS’ decisions.”

 

Biden and his wife Jill avoided paying Medicare taxes on book income and speaking fees in 2017 and 2018 by routing $13.3 million through “S corporations” and counting a small amount as eligible for the federal healthcare tax."

"The strategy is commonly used by wealthy people to dodge the 3.8% Medicare levy on large amounts of income and experts say the IRS lacks the resources to aggressively pursue cases of underpayment.

 

Republicans are vowing to investigate Biden’s tax situation next year if they retake Congress and regularly accuse him of hypocrisy for urging the wealthy to pay their “fair share.” Biden last year proposed legislation to close the tax loophole and boost IRS enforcement.

 

Democrats say that Biden used a common tax strategy and there’s no directly analogous case that indicates he was wrong in his calculations."

Lawsuit alleges Otonomo Inc. secretly collects and sells real-time GPS data from more than 50 million cars

 

Last year as part of a Motherboard investigation, experts said Otonomo could face legal issues. Now the company is facing a class action lawsuit.

A new class-action lawsuit filed in California targets Otonomo, a data broker that harvests location data from tens of millions of vehicles around the world and then sells access to that information.

 

Otonomo says it has systems in place that protect peoples’ privacy. But in June last year, Motherboard published an investigation based on a set of Otonomo data and used the information to find where people likely lived, worked, and where else they drove. At the time, experts said that Otonomo could face legal consequences because of how it handles consent and its data. The new lawsuit focuses specifically on those issues.

“Defendant Otonomo Inc. is a data broker that secretly collects and sells real-time GPS location information from more than 50 million cars throughout the world, including from tens of thousands in California. This data allows Otonomo—and its paying clients—to easily pinpoint consumers’ precise locations at all times of day and gain specific insight about where they live, work, and worship, and who they associate with,” the lawsuit, filed by lawyers from Edelson PC, reads. Courthouse News first reported on the lawsuit.

 

The plaintiff in the case is Saman Mollaei, a citizen of California. The lawsuit does not explain how it came to the conclusion that Otonomo is tracking tens of thousands of people in California. Otonomo originally started in Israel and has an office in California.

 

Mollaei drives a 2020 BMW X3, and when the vehicle was delivered to him, it contained an electronic device that allowed Otonomo to track its real-time location, according to the lawsuit. Importantly, the lawsuit alleges that Mollaei did not provide consent for this tracking, adding that “At no time did Otonomo receive—or even seek—Plaintiff's consent to track his vehicle’s locations or movements using an electronic tracking device.”

Former Raiffeisen Switzerland Chief Executive Pierin Vincenz was jailed for nearly four years on Wednesday at the end of a fraud trial which exposed his huge strip club bills and misuse of company expenses.

 

After one of Switzerland’s highest-profile corporate crime trials in decades, Zurich’s district court convicted Vincenz, a former Swiss “banker of the year” who was charged with making millions through illicit deals while he was CEO of the bank.

 

Vincenz, who was acquitted on several counts, was fined 840,000 Swiss francs (US$900,600) and ordered to pay nearly 1.6 million francs in damages to compensate firms in which he was involved, as the court also found the 65-year-old guilty of using business expenses for private purposes.

 

His lawyer said that Vincenz, who denies any wrongdoing, would appeal the verdict after he was sentenced to 3¾ years in prison.

 

Vincenz had told the court that a near 200,000 Swiss franc expenses bill for strip club visits was largely business-related, while a 700 franc dinner with a woman he met on dating app Tinder was justified because he was considering her for a real estate job.

 

But Judge Sebastian Aeppli told the court that the expense claims went too far and were not in his employer’s interests.

 

“[His] understanding, whereby practically all expenditures of a business person fall under disposable company expenses so long as any remote connection to the business activity exists, clearly went too far,” Aeppli said.

 

“The relationship maintenance he carried out in cabarets, strip clubs and contact bars was no longer in the primary interest of Raiffeisen,” the judge said, adding prudent handling of Raiffeisen’s money would have meant limiting tabs to 1,000 Swiss francs or less per occasion.

The trial, which was moved from a courthouse to Zurich’s Volkshaus theatre due to the intense public interest, centred around conflicts of interest on deals between a number of firms in which Vincenz and another defendant were involved.

 

All seven defendants in the trial, which began in January, had denied the allegations against them.

Is the Shanghai Lockdown Being Broadcast to Make America's Future Lockdowns Seem Less Evil?

 

The people of Shanghai are suffering tremendously over a disease that has an extremely high survival rate. Is this just China being bad or is there more to it that involves the whole world?

 

An extremely interesting video was dropped recently by Greg Reese at Banned.Video. Titled, "Forced Lockdowns Are Coming Back To America," it suggested that the reason we're seeing so much coverage of the Shanghai lockdown that's causing mass starvation, psychological damage, and countless deaths, is because American media is preparing us for lockdowns of our own.

 

The theory is by seeing how bad things are in Shanghai, we won't feel so badly about having to stay in our homes or shut down our businesses when Pandemic Panic Theater rears its ugly head again. Moreover, the video suggests that we've seen something like this before in the early days of the pandemic when video out of China showed people literally falling over while simply walking in the streets.

 

That didn't happen in the United States. Yes, people got sick but what we were seeing in "leaked" videos from China regarding Covid-19 didn't match our experience here at all. Is this all a propaganda campaign?

 

One piece of circumstantial evidence that does make sense is the fact that we're seeing the videos from Shanghai at all. China does not let information get out very easily. In fact, one would assume they could essentially lockdown the internet completely, making it nearly impossible for any videos of what's being done in Shanghai to see the light of day. Instead, we're seeing fresh videos come out constantly.

 

By no means am I suggesting, nor is Reese suggesting, that the suffering of the people of Shanghai is staged. The Chinese Communist Party has no qualms with letting their people suffer for effect. It's conspicuous that the coverage is so widespread. Not only are the videos making it out of Shanghai, but American corporate media is broadcasting it instead of taking their standard China-Owns-Us-So-Do-Not-Hate-On-China approach to "journalism."

 

IF world governments are planning another massive lockdown and IF they want to soften the blow for maximum compliance, this is exactly the type of propaganda they would allow to be shown from Shanghai.

The Florida lawsuit was filed by a group called the Health Freedom Defense Fund in July 2021.

 

The CDC first issued a public health order requiring masks in interstate transportation in February 2021. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) issued a security directive to enforce the CDC order.

 

The judge sent the issue back to the CDC. It was not immediately clear if the judge's order would take immediate effect.

22 Air Force Academy cadets kicked out for cheating

 

The U.S. Air Force Academy kicked out 22 of its cadets last week after they were reportedly caught cheating.

 

According to Air Force Magazine, Air Force Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Richard M. Clark informed the academy’s Board of Visitors of the expulsions on Wednesday. In addition to the 22 cadets who have been kicked out of the academy, another 210 had been placed on probation.

 

The separations come after 249 students were accused of cheating in a range of different ways in Spring 2020, during an eight-day period in which the cadets were sent home and transitioned to an at-home curriculum.

 

The expulsion and probation decisions resolve nearly all of the cheating cases. The academy concluded no violation had occurred in seven of the cases, while another three cases were dropped for unspecified reasons. Other accused cadets have resigned and three cadets’ cases are either on hold or have a decision pending, according to Air Force Magazine.

 

Those placed on probation will typically lose the privileges of leaving campus, wearing civilian clothes, participating in sports or other clubs and holding jobs, according to Air Force Times. They are also typically required to complete journal entries and attend meetings for honor code-related discussions. The probation period typically lasts about six months.

 

231 of the accused cadets had ultimately admitted to cheating, according to information Clark shared with the Board of Visitors and reported by Air Force Times.

 

“We had some that were using unauthorized websites, some that plagiarized on papers, some that collaborated on tests when they weren’t authorized to do so,” Clark said. “It wasn’t just one group. It was just a bunch of different actions that we were made aware of.”

 

Clark said the cheating incident also prompted the academy to examine its honor code policies overall.

 

“First, we realized that we weren’t emphasizing the ‘why’—why is this important that our Cadets own the mantra of living honorably?” Clark said.

 

Clark also said, “We realized there was a lack of trust in the system, that they didn’t see the consistency in the way the honor code was administered.”

 

Clark said the academy has increased its staffing and curriculum for teaching and maintaining its honor code following the 2020 cheating episode.

 

Honor code violations have reportedly dropped from 311 cases in the 2020-2021 school year to 44 in the 2021-2022 year, according to Air Force Times. The 2020-2021 year represented the highest number of honor code violations in a year since 2009. The 2021-2022 period saw the lowest number of honor code violations in that same time period.

Infowars Alex Jones’ Files for Bankruptcy for Multiple Companies

 

Infowars has filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as the websites fonder Alex Jones faces defamation lawsuits over his comments that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax.

 

The bankruptcy filing happened on Easter Sunday in Texas puts civil litigation on hold while the business reorganizes its finances.

 

In its court filing, Infowars said it had estimated assets of $50,000 or less and estimated liabilities of $1 million to $10 million. Creditors listed in the bankruptcy filing include relatives of some of the 20 children and six educators killed in the 2012 school massacre in Connecticut.

 

According to the case against Jones’ the plaintiffs claim they have been subjected to harassment and death threats from Jones’ followers because of the hoax conspiracy that Jones promoted. Jones has since conceded that the shooting did happen.

 

The families have already won defamation lawsuits against Jones in court.

 

“Alex Jones is just delaying the inevitable: a public trial in which he will be held accountable for his profit-driven campaign of lies against the Sandy Hook families who have brought this lawsuit,” said Christopher Mattei, who represents the families in a Connecticut lawsuit against Jones.

 

Last month Jones was fined $75,000 for failing to appear for a deposition in a defamation case but a judge last week ordered the return of the money because Jones eventually showed up.

 

Yet another lawsuit trying to silence Jones has been filed and accuse him of hiding millions of dollars in assets, but an attorney for Jones has said the allegation was “ridiculous.”

 

Jones was sued in Texas and Connecticut by 13 different plaintiffs who rejected Jones’ settlement offers of $120,000.

 

“I could have done a better job on Sandy Hook,” Jones said in an Infowars video after testifying. “Some of the anomalies that we reported were not accurate, and I admitted it YEARS before I was sued”

 

Jones in a 2019 deposition said, “almost had like a form of psychosis back in the past where I basically thought everything was staged, even though I’m now learning a lot of times things aren’t staged.” He added that “the media and the corporations lying so much” was to blame.

UAE used Israeli-made spyware to hack UK PM Johnson’s official residence — report

 

Researchers at Toronto-based Citizen Lab say Pegasus was also used to hack British Foreign Office at least five times in 2020-21

 

Hackers used software made by the Israeli spyware company NSO Group to infiltrate the official residence of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the New Yorker reported on Monday.

 

According to the report, which cited researchers from Toronto-based Citizen Lab, On July 7, 2020, hackers using NSO’s Pegasus spyware tried to hack into a device connected to the network at 10 Downing Street.

 

A UK government official confirmed the attempted hacking to the New Yorker, but did not confirm that Pegasus was used.

 

NSO’s Pegasus product allows operators to stealthily invade a target’s mobile device, giving them access to contacts, messages, and movement history.

 

The company says that Pegasus is sold only to foreign governments after approval by the Defense Ministry as a tool for catching criminals and terrorists. Although it says it has safeguards in place to prevent abuse, it has also acknowledged that it cannot control whom its clients monitor and it does not have access to the information that is collected.

 

According to the source, the National Cyber Security Centre, which is under the jurisdiction of the British Defense Ministry, investigated several devices at 10 Downing Street, including Johnson’s.

 

The source said that officials were not able to locate the infected device.

 

“When we found the No. 10 case, my jaw dropped,” John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher at Citizen Lab, told the New Yorker.

 

“We suspect this included the exfiltration of data,” Bill Marczak, another senior researcher there, said.

 

The researchers also showed that based on the servers to which the information was transmitted, it is likely that the UAE was behind the hack.

 

According to researchers, Pegasus was also suspected of having infected the Foreign Office on at least five occasions between July 2020 and July 2021.

 

This was linked to operators in the UAE, India, Cyprus, and Jordan.

 

Responding to the New Yorker article, NSO denied that its software was used in the alleged attack.

 

NSO Group has faced mounting scrutiny since a consortium of news outlets revealed in July last year that its Pegasus software had been used to spy on the phones of journalists, politicians, activists, or business leaders in many countries.

Judge strikes down CDC mask mandate for travel

 

A federal judge in Florida on Monday struck down the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) mask mandate for travel on planes, trains and buses.

 

Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle, an appointee of former President Trump, wrote that the CDC exceeded its statutory authority with the order.

 

The CDC had recently extended the order for 15 days, through May 3, amid some discussion of whether to end it. But the agency decided more time was needed to monitor an uptick in cases from the BA.2 subvariant of omicron.

 

Mizelle added that the CDC had also failed to follow the rulemaking processes laid out in law and provide a sufficient justification for its mandate.

 

The move adds to the legal fights over pandemic mitigation measures from the Biden administration. The White House’s vaccine-or-test mandate for large employers previously suffered defeat in the courts.

 

Steve Vladeck, a law professor at the University of Texas, tweeted that airports and travel should be at the core of the CDC’s legal authority to prevent the spread of disease.

 

“This is both a big deal and a truly preposterous (nationwide) injunction,” he wrote of the order. “The CDC’s statutory authority is specifically directed at preventing the spread of communicable diseases across state lines. Where else is such spread more likely to occur than transport hubs like airports?”

 

The ruling can be appealed, but there could be confusion in the short term.

 

The travel mask mandate was one of the few remaining mask orders, as states and localities across the country have largely lifted mask mandates for the general public. Philadelphia is a rare exception in reinstating a more general mask mandate in recent days due to the uptick in cases.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that Western countries had scored an own goal by imposing sanctions against Russia over Ukraine which he said had led to a "deterioration of the economy in the West."

Ukraine will receive a total of $500 million in aid from allies Canada and Japan in the coming days, Ukrainian prime minister Denis Shmygal announced on Monday.

The coronavirus pandemic ushered in what may be the most rapid rise in homeschooling the U.S. has ever seen. Two years later, even after schools reopened and vaccines became widely available, many parents have chosen to continue directing their children’s educations themselves.

 

Homeschooling numbers this year dipped from last year’s all-time high, but are still significantly above pre-pandemic levels, according to data obtained and analyzed by The Associated Press.

 

Families that may have turned to homeschooling as an alternative to hastily assembled remote learning plans have stuck with it — reasons include health concerns, disagreement with school policies and a desire to keep what has worked for their children.

 

In 18 states that shared data through the current school year, the number of homeschooling students increased by 63% in the 2020-2021 school year, then fell by only 17% in the 2021-2022 school year.

 

Around 3% of U.S. students were homeschooled before the pandemic-induced surge, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The rising numbers have cut into public school enrollment in ways that affect future funding and renewed debates over how closely homeschooling should be regulated. What remains unknown is whether this year’s small decrease signals a step toward pre-pandemic levels — or a sign that homeschooling is becoming more mainstream.

 

Linda McCarthy, a suburban Buffalo mother of two, says her children are never going back to traditional school.

Unimpressed with the lessons offered remotely when schools abruptly closed their doors in spring 2020, she began homeschooling her then fifth- and seventh-grade children that fall. McCarthy, who had been working as a teacher’s aide, said she knew she could do better herself. She said her children have thrived with lessons tailored to their interests, learning styles and schedules.

 

"There’s no more homework ’til the wee hours of the morning, no more tears because we couldn’t get things done," McCarthy said.

 

Once a relatively rare practice chosen most often for reasons related to instruction on religion, homeschooling grew rapidly in popularity following the turn of the century before leveling off at around 3.3%, or about 2 million students, in the years before the pandemic, according to the Census. Surveys have indicated factors including dissatisfaction with neighborhood schools, concerns about school environment and the appeal of customizing an education.

 

In the absence of federal guidelines, there is little uniformity in reporting requirements. Some states, including Connecticut and Nevada, require little or no information from parents, while New York, Massachusetts and some others require parents to submit instruction plans and comply with assessment rules.

 

The new surge in homeschooling numbers has led state legislatures around the country to consider measures either to ease regulations on homeschool families or impose new ones — debates have gone on for years. Proponents of more oversight point to the potential for undetected cases of child abuse and neglect while others argue for less in the name of parental rights.

 

All of the 28 state education departments that provided homeschooling data to the AP reported that homeschooling spiked in 2020-21, when fears of infection kept many school buildings closed. Of the 18 states whose enrollment data included the current school year, all but one state said homeschooling declined from the previous year but remained well above pre-pandemic levels. The Pirate Bay, YouTube-DL And More 'Removed' From DuckDuckGo Search Results, Reinstated After Report

 

DuckDuckGo on Friday was found to have "removed" The Pirate Bay, 1337x, YouTube-DL and other "pirate" sites from their search results.

 

"Privacy-centered search engine DuckDuckGo has completely removed the search results for many popular pirates sites including The Pirate Bay, 1337x, and Fmovies. Several YouTube ripping services have disappeared, too and even the homepage of the open-source software youtube-mp3 is unfindable," TorrentFreak reported.

 

When doing some research earlier today we noticed that several popular pirate sites were no longer showing up in DuckDuckGo's results globally. Initially, we thought that some popular pages had been removed following DMCA takedown notices, but there is clearly more going on than that.

 

For example, searching for "site:thepiratebay.org" is supposed to return all results DuckDuckGo has indexed for The Pirate Bay’s main domain name. In this case, there are none.

 

The lack of results is not tied to a specific country and manually fiddling with the region settings didn't change anything either. Apparently, DuckDuckgo has simply removed all thepiratebay.org URLs from its index.

 

This whole-site removal isn't limited to The Pirate Bay either. When we do similar searches for 1337x.to, NYAA.se, Fmovies.to, Lookmovie.io, and 123moviesfree.net, no results appear. For RarBG.to and Fitgirl-repacks we only get one result, instead of the hundreds of thousands we see on other search engines.

 

The absence of results doesn't only apply to pirate sites themselves. For example, there are no results for the streaming portals Flixtor and Primewire. In addition, the associated status pages, which merely include links to the official domains, are not indexed either.

 

Even several popular stream-rippers have been completely wiped from the search results. That includes 2conv.com, Flvto.bid, and several others.

 

The most surprising omission, by far, is that the official site for the open-source software youtube-dl is not indexed by DuckDuckGo. This site certainly doesn't host or link to any copyright-infringing material.

 

DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weinberg denied "purging" search results on Sunday and blamed unspecified "issues" with the "site:" operator for the sites disappearing.

In the beginning, we thought we were going crazy. It just sort of snuck up on us, perplexing even we who thought were ‘in the know.’ We were fairly uncomfortable talking about it, because, well, it was weird. Though it may sound histrionic, propaganda has a well-documented history of inducing mass death and suffering. It decides elections. It manufactures consent for war.

 

Peer-reviewed research indicates that Internet algorithms can influence public policy by inflicting significant enough bias to skew U.S. election outcomes. Pound for pound, information is the most coveted asset on Earth.

When I was young, fearless and following what I thought was my dream, I got a glimpse into the grunt-level underpinnings of this machine and into my own personal hell. The corruption grew denser the further up the ladder. It wasn’t perfectly coordinated but it was moving in tandem along a similar path of self-interest and what ‘sells.’

 

Money controlled the news, and the bulk of money wasn’t coming from the readers. They appealed to our most basic human instincts and drive for social inclusion, food, safety, sex, power, and a sense of purpose.

 

The sinking feeling of being trapped in a mass delusion wasn’t something I could exactly describe or tell anyone about until #FakeNews became a hashtag decades later. Now, there is little dispute that it exists but merely the scope of it that defies imagination.

 

The lack of any real identifiable coordination between everyday white-collar workers is the barrier people often encounter when considering the scope of the operation.

 

Everyone can’t be in on it. The problem is that we don’t know if we are in on it.

 

Editors pull from a set of stories on the wire, subscribed to by media corporations across the world. Beyond local news, the daily itinerary features the same stories, though they appear with some variations in content and length. Higher-ups who have meetings with other higher-ups slate lead stories in advance. Editors piece together related material out from the same pot. Aside from some uncontrollable minor improvisations, the narrative holds.

 

The relationship between the general populace, including those who graduate to media vocations and the pounding narrative that surrounds them both is akin to a hierarchy of narcissists and the abused.

 

It involves heaps of gaslighting, the projection and coerced adoption of the abuser’s negative traits onto and by their victims by producing an artificial pulse in order to align our reality closer to theirs.

 

It is a hierarchy of bureaucratic slaves, and their most potent driving force is the replication of fear incongruent with reality, abstracted and redirected from actual experience, not much unlike the way actors conjure emotion in a play.

 

It is not beyond the present frontier that the system selects candidates for certain roles and influence. Some are clearly bought off or blackmailed, but the vast majority of those on the lower ranks are influenced indirectly, polarized and emotionally manipulated in tech silos by messages that conjure up delicate histories and their own need to overcome these, even if superficially.

 

This is true of the general population as well.

 

Astroturfing

 

A significant portion of the population has self-ejected from mainstream narratives, finding cover in yet another layer of information matrices with independent and alternative media.

 

These spaces, too, are infiltrated.

 

Grassroots creative and alternative info markets have been subject to the same controls, reduced to despotism through spec work and globalized markets, software monopolies, astroturfing, honeypots, selective boosting and suppression.

 

As an example, consider the context and complexity of the connected entities surrounding WikiLeaks.

 

Two of the architects of SecureDrop, the whistleblower software deployed after WikiLeaks’ Tor submission system went offline, namely Reddit founder Aaron Swartz and James Dolan, both died of apparent suicide. The third SecureDrop founder can still be found lightly covering aspects of these connected platforms and their misadventures as editor for Wired Magazine.

 

Snowden, who was first forged in the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) prior to his rendezvous with the National Security Agency (NSA), now sits at the end of the table of the board of directors of Freedom Press Foundation (FPF), which once funded WikiLeaks.

 

Hollywood directed our attention to the far-reaching capabilities and abuses of government surveillance. Although eye-opening, Snowden’s narrowed focus tends to leave unrestrained and poorly regulated corporate data collection and big tech with a comparatively free pass.

 

In 2013, Freedom Press Foundation, affiliated with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), which aimed to remove the final barrier — ISP gatekeepers’ ability to stall the advance of media monopolies, calling it “Net Neutrality” — took over the development of SecureDrop.

 

EFF hosts hackathons for the software and has received multiple six-figure contributions from George Soros and his Open Society Foundations.

 

Billionaire Pierre Omidyar, founder of eBay, also held significant shares with PayPal, the company that withdrew the funding mechanism for the WikiLeaks platform. FPF then organized to raise funding for WikiLeaks, before they too eventually abandoned support.
