Wines like Manischewitz aren't very good - but we love them anyway. The story of a uniquely American tradition.

 

"A seder without sweet Manischewitz," the comedian Jackie Mason once said, "would be like horseradish without tears, like a cantor without a voice, like a shul without a complaint, like a yenta without a big mouth, like Passover without Jews." To the uninitiated, Passover wine is an ethnic curiosity, or a culinary ordeal on a par with lutefisk. Those who grew up drinking it, though, find in Concord grape wine the taste of Jewish tradition. And that's ironic, because there may be no more thoroughly American beverage.

 

The central ritual of Passover is the seder, a recounting of the Exodus over four cups of wine. Jewish law stipulates that kosher wine be produced and handled only by Jews, a requirement that initially proved difficult to meet in North America. Early cultivars of native grape species were poorly adapted for viticulture, and imported grape vines succumbed to cold, mildew, and fungi. The few who could afford it imported wine from Europe. Others relied on a stipulation that, in exigencies, allowed other premium beverages to be substituted for wine. So Jews filled their seder cups with everything from hard cider to clear Jamaican rum.

Horace Greeley named the Concord the best grape for general cultivation in 1866, awarding it a $100 prize and declaring it "the grape for millions."

The most popular solution, though, was adapted from a common custom of the old country. Immigrants soaked raisins in water and boiled down the liquid, producing an ersatz wine. It was thicker and sweeter than wine from grapes. Most raisin wine was non-alcoholic, either because American Jews mistakenly conflated fermentation with leavening, which was proscribed on Passover, or because this left it exempt from excise taxes. Some made the wine at home, but production also migrated to small shops and basement wineries. By 1890, the six leading vendors in New York alone sold 40,000 gallons of this Passover wine.

Enter the Concord grape. It was developed by an eccentric Yankee named Ephraim Wales Bull, who was determined to breed a grape hardy enough to thrive in New England by planting the seeds of native vines. In 1849, after six years of labor, he plucked a bunch from an early-ripening vine, and declared success. The Concord grape went on sale in 1854, and rapidly spread throughout the country. Horace Greeley named it the best grape for general cultivation in 1866, awarding it a $100 prize and declaring it "the grape for millions." Bull was immensely proud of having developed the leading "native grape."

In that, Bull was only partially correct. The Concord was "probably the result of at least two generations of mixed breeding," one scholar recently concluded. But if, as the hybrid offspring of immigrant and native stock, it failed to meet Bull's goal of national purity, it nevertheless perfectly embodies our more modern understanding of our national character.

The Concord helped create the category of table grape, and proved well-adapted to jellying. In New Jersey, a Methodist dentist named Thomas Welch decided to pasteurize its juice, to produce a non-alcoholic beverage for sacramental use. Churches friendly to the temperance movement soon embraced Dr. Welch's Grape Juice, which was also touted for its health benefits.

Much to the dismay of its early backers, though, the Concord produced disappointing wines. In 1869, one reviewer observed that "some were of incredible nastiness, while others, made from perfectly ripe grapes with the addition of sugar, were comparatively palatable, although by no means of great merit." And that was the verdict of an enthusiast.

But to Jewish immigrants, the Concord grape promised an attractive alternative to Passover raisin wine. It was fairly cheap, abundant, and most important of all, local. Controversy raged over California wines arriving in eastern markets, with some influential rabbis questioning whether they could really be trusted. Concord grapes could be harvested, and turned into wine, under local rabbinical supervision. The wine also had another key advantage: shelf-life. "[W]hen I was a little girl," one former denizen of the Lower East Side recalled, " … my father used to buy a gallon and have it for a whole year."

The first commercial kosher winery in New York opened just four years later as the California Valley Wine Company, emphasizing its American sophistication. It fermented Concord grapes from upstate New York into a fortified, syrupy, highly alcoholic wine that soon took the name of the proprietors—Schapiro's. Others followed. The Monterey Wine Company in Brooklyn sold Lipschutz Kosher Wine. Chicago had the California Wine Company, which became the Wine Corporation of America. These companies were not marketing tradition–they were offering a new, American way to fulfill an ancient obligation.

Kosher wineries flourished even during Prohibition, using the Volstead Act's exemption for sacramental beverages. Many Jews also took to fermenting batches at home, since the government permitted them 10 gallons each year for religious use. Inevitably, Concord wine flowed into the black market, where it gained a more general audience. The burgeoning popularity of Concord grape juice likewise accustomed American palates to the distinctive flavor of the grape. The repeal of Prohibition brought a boom in kosher wine.

It was in the postwar years, as wineries struggled to hang onto their rapidly assimilating clientele, that the emphasis shifted from novelty to nostalgia. In 1947, the Wine Corporation of America took the name of its leading product, Mogen David, and began to market it as "the wine like Grandma used to make." One rival proclaimed that, "For generations, New Yorkers have preferred Schapiro's."

Concord wine, it turns out, has hipster cred. It is also enjoying a boom in exports to Asia.

But vintners also pushed their product into the mainstream American market, following a well-worn path established by other ethnic foods. By 1952, Mogen David was among the most popular wines in the Midwest, selling more than 5 million gallons. "Manischewitz is everybody's wine," a 1958 ad insisted. Two years later, the company hired Sammy Davis Jr. to croon the praises of its Sweet Concord White, reviving its radio-era slogan: "Man-o-Manischewitz." The campaign helped the company gain a loyal following in the African-American community, a segment that continues to account for a large percentage of its sales. The slogan itself became an enduring part of pop culture. (Years later, astronaut Gene Cernan, the last man on the moon, would exclaim "Manischewitz!" in lieu of using profanity while his microphone was on.)

As American consumers developed more sophisticated tastes in the late twentieth century, though, sales slackened. The past few decades have seen the development of a new kosher wine industry, offering wines capable of satisfying even the most demanding wine snobs. (It is, perhaps, a testament to the onetime popularity of Concord wines that the general press feels obliged to reveal this profusion of kosher wines as a new and stunning development each successive spring.) The sweetened wines came to be seen, by many younger Jews, as something of an embarrassment.

But fashions often come full circle. Just a few blocks from the old Schapiro's winery, a modern bistro attracts a trendy crowd with offerings that include the Drunken Pharaoh, a Manischewitz-and-bourbon cocktail. Concord wine, it turns out, has hipster cred. It is also enjoying a boom in exports to Asia, home to the world's fastest-growing wine markets.

And in 2008, on the campaign trail, three low-level staffers improvised a seder, serving Manischewitz to their unexpected guest, Barack Obama. I like to think that this year, at the White House seder that the Times labeled the "least likely of White House traditions," President Obama will again fill his cup with Concord red. The wine was produced from a hybrid grape, mixing European and native stock; popularized by immigrants, Americanizing an ancient ritual; imbued with nostalgia, as their children assimilated; and then embraced by the general public, as ethnic foodways fused. It may not be sophisticated or refined, but it's difficult to imagine a beverage better suited to the White House.

Let's pray the ‘Cold War’ between America and Russia doesn't turn hot

The Cold War, a term coined 75 years ago, is still here – and it’s better than what seems to be the only alternative

…The pivotal moment in modern US-Russia relations came following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. DespiteVladimir Putin being the first global leader to telephone US President George W. Bush and offer Russia’s unconditional support,

 

Washington returned the gesture in a way that Moscow would not soon forget. Just a few short months later December 13, 2001, Bush gave formal notice that the US would be withdrawing from the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty. Signed by Moscow and Washington in 1972, the ABM treaty maintained strategic parity – and more importantly, peace – between the nuclear powers, a type of balancing act that has been described as ‘mutually assured destruction’.

 

What did the US proceed to do shortly after walking away from the 30-year-old treaty? It went ahead with plans to bolt down a sophisticated anti-ballistic missile system in Poland, a mere stone's throw from the Russian border. To which they deployed soldiers this year.

 

“The U.S. Navy recently moved sailors aboard its newest base, a strategic installation in northern Poland that will support NATO’s European missile defense system,” Stars & Stripes reported in January. “Citing operational security, the Navy would not say how many personnel were assigned to the base or provide … details about the installation’s size or structure.”

 

Last year, Mikhail Khodarenok, a retired Russian colonel, discussed in an RT op-ed what this system means for Russia and European security.

 

“The development of the Aegis Ashore complex in Poland worries Russia,”Khodarenok wrote. “Here is the problem. The Mark 41 launching system can be quickly adjusted, and the SM-3 would be replaced with Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles.”

 

“What is Russia supposed to do in this situation, when such a transformation of the land-based Aegis system in Poland could pose a very real threat to its national security,” he asked.

 

Nobody should think, however, that Moscow has not been busy finding ways to respond to the US and NATO efforts at building anti-ballistic systems in Eastern Europe. In fact, Moscow immediately got to work on ways to overcome the US anti-missile systems once Washington pulled out of the ABM Treaty. Those efforts paid off in ways that the US may not have anticipated.

 

In 2018, Putin delivered a rather unorthodox State of the Nation speech in which he announced the creation of hypersonic missiles that travel so fast that “missile defense systems are useless against them, absolutely pointless,” he said.

 

“No, nobody really wanted to talk to us about the core of the problem [US anti-missile systems in Eastern Europe], and nobody wanted to listen to us,” the Russian leader stated defiantly. “So listen now.”

 

Moscow’s concern over the strategic military architecture being constructed in its ‘near abroad’ is no secret. Back in 2007, Putin delivered a speech to the Munich Security Conference in which he emphasized that for Russia, NATO expansion “represents a serious provocation that reduces the level of mutual trust.” He went on to ask the rhetorical question: “against whom is this expansion intended?”

 

At this point, many more pages could be written on other areas of US-Russian relations that demonstrate the two nuclear superpowers may have survived the Soviet times, each in their own way, but the vestiges of the Cold War continue to live on. From unproven accusations that Russia interfered in the 2016 US presidential election to Washington’s unconcealed displeasure over Russia’s decision to intervene in the Syrian civil war against Islamic State, tensions between the US and Russia are reverting back to Cold War levels, and then some.

 

And now, with hostilities in Ukraine threatening to spill over into something beyond control, it may be a good time to pray that it remains a Cold War and doesn't turn hot.

Russia needs a new pension reform that would lower thepension age to 45, businessman Oleg Deripaska, founder of aluminum giant Rusal and, for a time in the late 2000s, Russia’s richest man, told the news outlet Expert. He believes the assets of state-owned companies could be used to fund the plan.

 

“It is necessary to replenish the assets of the pension system in such a way that for people over 45 there is a source of pension payments that does not depend on the federal budget. And that's where state property comes in handy… We have these assets: Gazprom, Rosneft, all other state-owned companies…” Deripaska suggested.

 

The businessman noted that such companies should be restructured in order toeliminate the scheme whereby they must first transfer the funds to the state budget and then to the pension fund. According to Deripaska, steps to change this must be taken as quickly as possible.

 

“And to those who are under 45, or to such active guys like me, we’ll say: earn money yourself,” he added.

 

Russia passed a pension reform in 2018, raising the retirement age to 65 for men and to 60 for women. However, the reform reduced the length of service required for early retirement to 42 years for men and 37 for women. Russian President Vladimir Putin explained at the time that the reform was necessary to ensure the stability of the pension system.

 

The changes were met with criticism among the public, which was uneager to work the extra years without the additional payments provided by pensions. Mass protests against raising the retirement age were held across the country.

Riots spread in Sweden amid far-right plans to burn Koran

Chants of ‘Allahu Akbar’, police cars set on fire, and officers injured – this is what the run-up to Easter looked like in multiple towns and cities across Sweden this week, after the authorities gave a far-right anti-immigration group the go-ahead to stage rallies, which included plans to burn the Koran.

 

Unrest broke out on Thursday in the city of Linkoping, where gangs of youths clashed with police, injuring three officers. At least two people were detained.

 

The violence was sparked by the Swedish authorities’ decision to grant permission for a series of anti-Islam rallies. Organized by Rasmus Paludan – a right-wing Danish politician who has spent time in prison on racism-related charges – the events in various places across Sweden were intended to feature the burning of Islam’s holy book, the Koran.

Tensions came to a head on Friday when the Danish firebrand descended on the city of Orebro.

 

While Paludan and his supporters were initially allowed to hold their rally, it eventually had to be “dissolved” in light of the “serious security situation.” Mobs of rioters protesting against the far-right group pelted police with stones and set fire to four law enforcement vehicles.

 

So tense was the situation that police had to fire warning shots at one point, as confirmed by a police spokesperson to Swedish media.

 

While the local police department initially spoke of four injured officers and a bystander, it later updated that number, saying that “about ten colleagues” had sustained injuries.

According to the authorities, some of the policemen taken to the hospital had been hit on the head, while others had suspected arms fractures. Police described the events in Orebro as a “violent riot.”

 

Similar scenes played out in Sweden’s capital, Stockholm, as well as Malmo and Norrkoping.

 

On Saturday, unrest was reported in the town of Landskrona, with dozens of youths setting fire to vehicles, tires, and trash cans. According to the local police, none of the law enforcement personnel deployed in the town were harmed as a result. Officials noted that tensions were gradually dying down.

 

According to the Expressen newspaper, Paludan did manage to burn at least one copy of the Koran in Stockholm’s Rinkeby district on Friday. A video was also posted on Twitter, which appears to show him in the act

 

Explaining their decision to grant Paludan permission to hold the controversial rallies across the country, the Swedish authorities cited freedom of speech.

 

Paludan’s anti-Islam performances and the subsequent rioting came ahead of Easter, and during the month of Ramadan.

Russia raises export quotas on fertilizers

The measure aims to help support domestic producers

 

Russia has increased export quotas on complex mineral fertilizers to support domestic producers, according to a resolution published on the Cabinet of Ministers website on Sunday.

 

“The current export quotas for Russian producers of mineral fertilizers have been temporarily increased by nearly 700 thousand tons,” the resolution states. The measure will be valid until May 31, 2022.

 

“These measures are necessary to support fertilizer producers who face the risk of idle time due to low demand in the domestic market and sanctions from unfriendly states,” the announcement stated further, referring to sanctions placed on Russia by a number of Western states in response to Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine. Fertilizers, however, have so far largely been spared from restrictions.The US even removed fertilizers from its sanctions list earlier this monthin order to protect US farmers from shortages as food prices continue to soar.

The Russian authorities expect countries that have not joined the anti-Russia sanctions to take advantage of the move and buy more Russian fertilizers.

 

According to the document, the export quota for nitrogen fertilizers is set at about 5.7 million tons and for complex fertilizers at about 5.6 million tons.

The quotas will not apply to fertilizer exports to the Donbass region, as well as to Russia’s neighbors Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

 

Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Western countries would continue to buy Russian fertilizers because the commodity is in short supply.

Russia offers besieged Ukrainian troops chance to surrender

The Russian Defense Ministry has called on the remaining Ukrainian forces, besieged at a steel plant in the coastal city of Mariupol, to lay down their arms, offering safety guarantees, if they accept the proposal and halt all hostilities on Sunday morning.

 

“Considering the catastrophic situation at the Azovstal metallurgical plant, and being guided by purely humane principles, the Russian Armed Forces offer militants of nationalist battalions and foreign mercenaries to stop hostilities and lay down their arms starting 6am Moscow time on April 17, 2022,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a late-night announcement on Saturday.

 

“All who lay down their weapons are guaranteed the preservation of life,” the ministry stated.

 

Earlier on Saturday, Moscow revealed its estimate of Ukrainian casualty numbers, claiming that in the city of Mariupol alone, Kiev has lost more than 4,000 combatants, including “foreign mercenaries” and “Nazis” associated with the notorious Azov and Aidar regiments.

 

In its ceasefire proposal, the Russian military said that the remaining troops are in a “hopeless situation, with virtually no food and water,” citing the contents of hundreds of radio intercepts on Saturday alone. The holed-up fighters allegedly “persistently request permission from the officials in Kiev to lay down their arms and surrender,” while the Ukrainian authorities “categorically forbid it under the threat of wartime executions,” Moscow claimed.

 

Moscow offered to establish a direct communication line with the Ukrainian troops at 5am, and to indicate the beginning of the actual ceasefire at 6am by raising flags around the perimeter of Azovstal – red on the Russian side and white on the Ukrainian side. Biden breaks campaign promise

US will resume selling leases to drill for oil and gas

 

The US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced on Friday that it will resume selling oil and gas leases on federal lands, despite US President Joe Biden’s campaign-trail promise to end the practice. The move is a belated response to a 2021 court ruling, as well as an apparent effort to increase domestic fuel supply at a time when energy prices are near record highs across the US.

 

The BLM will only offer about 144,000 acres of government land for lease, 80% less than what the agency initially evaluated. It will also increase drilling royalties from 12.5% to 18.75%, the first such increase in decades.

 

The move complies with a ruling issued by the US District Court for the Southern District of Louisiana in June 2021 that required the government to resume granting leases on federal land. While the exact location of the new leases will not be revealed until they are auctioned by the BLM on Monday, they will be located in nine states: Alabama, Colorado, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Utah, and Wyoming.

 

The timing of the move appears to be aimed at bringing down the price of gasoline, which shot up to record high levels in response to the US and Europe’s heavy-handed sanctioning of Russia over the conflict in Ukraine. However, experts have suggested it would take as much as a year before any new drilling could produce enough additional supply to lower the cost of fuel, making any hope of leveraging lower gas prices for the midterm elections somewhat hopeless.

Ukraine outlines position on Russia peace deal

A peace agreement with Russia might consist of two separate documents that would cover the two key issues – security guarantees for Kiev and its future relations with Moscow, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday.

 

Speaking to Ukrainian media, Zelensky claimed that the Kremlin would like to have one comprehensive document that would address all the issues. However, because the security guarantees involve other countries, two documents could be a solution, he outlined.

 

“A peace treaty with Russia can consist of two different documents. One of them should concern security guarantees for Ukraine, the other to directly address its relations with the Russian Federation,” Zelensky said.

 

He explained that a document covering security guarantees could be signed by those countries “who are ready for these security guarantees,” while another document could cover future relations between Ukraine and Russia.

 

Zelensky claimed that the UK, US, Italy and Turkey have shown a willingness to provide security guarantees for Ukraine, but there has been no final answer from any of them. A previous list of potential guarantors also included Germany, France, Poland and Israel.

 

“Moscow would like to have one agreement that addresses all the issues. However, not all see themselves at the same table with Russia. For them, security guarantees for Ukraine are one issue, and agreements with Russia are another,” Zelensky said.

 

Despite the apparent progress achieved in the negotiations between Moscow and Kiev in Istanbul in late March, earlier this week Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the peace talks had “returned to a deadlock.” He explained that Ukraine has refused to fulfill one of Russia’s key requests:to recognize Crimea as Russian and the Donbass republics as independent.

 

Putin’s remarks followed an announcement by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that Kiev had submitted new written proposals that deviated from what was offered during the in-person talks. The new proposal, according to Lavrov, fails to mention that the security guarantees Kiev wants to obtain do not cover Crimea.

 

Obtaining security guarantees from world powers has been named by Kiev as a key condition for agreeing to a neutral status and abandoning its ambition to join NATO.

I will consider this advice…

 

Regarding my religious believes, which should hold no weight on one's decision to help a child in danger; I was a dedicated and staunch Christian for years. I trusted in Jesus and God. Much like I "trusted the plan". Both, proved to be absent in the face of crisis. Both God and Q, have gone AWOL, and my children and I have been left alone on the battlefield.

 

Faith… Was originally translated, "Pistis". This meant, "come to trust". Not some kind of blind allegiance. And how does one come to trust another? We trust others when they demonstrate dependability, honesty, and trustworthiness.

 

This was not demonstrated to me… And my trust in such beliefs has not been earned. Do I still believe in a God? Surely. Do I believe the Bible or any other earthly text will lead me to God, or help gain his favor? No… I once did, and was proved foolish for doing so. I will not be deceived again.

 

Like God, you seem to be telling me, "I will not help your children, unless do XYZ…"

 

I do not want help from such people. If a friend approached me wanting help with getting his children safe, it would be a priority for me, because I would empathize with my friend, and treat him how I would wish to be treated, were the tables turned.

 

I do not want help from those, who do not want to help children, and would rather receive some sort of compensation whether it be verbal or otherwise. Shall I allow my exploited children to be exploited further? No…

 

Help or don't help… You can explain your own actions and decisions to your God. No one is putting a gun to your head, anon.

 

You either want to help children in danger, or you don't Religion and God, doesn't have shit to do with it.
