'Deprogramming' QAnon followers ignores free will and why they adopted the beliefs in the first place

Recent calls to deprogram QAnon conspiracy followers are steeped in discredited notions about brainwashing. As popularly imagined, brainwashing is a coercive procedure that programs new long-term personality changes. Deprogramming, also coercive, is thought to undo brainwashing.

 

As a professor of religious studies who has written and taught about alternative religious movements, I believe such deprogramming conversations do little to help us understand why people adopt QAnon beliefs. A deprogramming discourse fails to understand religious recruitment and conversion and excuses those spreading QAnon beliefs from accountability.

 

These โ€œcult-recovery experts,โ€ some of whom were involved with the old deprogramming model, are now being used for QAnon deprogramming advice.

 

Some, like Ross advocate for a more aggressive intervention approach. Others, like Hassan, offer a gentler approach that includes active listening. Cult specialist Pat Ryan says he only recommends intervention after a thorough assessment in conjunction with a mental health professional.

 

Despite the pivot to exit counseling, the language of deprogramming persists. The concept of deprogramming rests on the idea that people do not choose alternative beliefs. Instead, beliefs that are deemed too deviant for mainstream culture are thought to result from coercive manipulation by nefarious entities like cult leaders. When people call for QAnon believers to be deprogrammed, they are implicitly denying that followers exercised choice in accepting QAnon beliefs.

 

This denies the personal agency and free will of those who became QAnon enthusiasts, and shifts the focus to the programmer. It can also relieve followers of responsibility for perpetuating QAnon beliefs.

 

As I suggested in an earlier article, and as evident in the QAnon influence on the Jan. 6, 2021, capital insurrection, QAnon beliefs can be dangerous. I believe those who adopt and perpetuate these beliefs ought to be held responsible for the consequences.

 

But applying a brainwashing and deprogramming discourse limits our potential to understand the grievances of the QAnon community. To suggest โ€œthey were temporarily out of their mindsโ€ relieves followers of the conspiracy of responsibility and shelters the rest of society from grappling with uncomfortable social realities.

 

To understand the QAnon phenomenon, I believe analysts must dig deeply into the social, economic and political factors that influence the adoption of QAnon beliefs.

Russia publishes data on foreign mercenaries in Ukraine

 

400 foreign fighters remain trapped in Mariupol, where Kiev forces have refused an offer to surrender

 

An estimated 6,824 foreign mercenaries from 63 countries have come to Ukraine to fight for Volodymyr Zelenskyโ€™s government, the Russian Defense Ministry stated on Sunday. Of these, 1,035 have been โ€œdestroyed,โ€ while several thousand remain. Four hundred foreign fighters are holed up in Mariupol, where nationalist forces, including the neo-Nazi fighters, have refused to surrender.

 

The most numerous group of foreign fighters (1,717) arrived from Poland, while around 1,500 came from the US, Canada and Romania. Up to 300 people each came from the UK and Georgia, while 193 arrived from the Turkish-controlled areas of Syria.

 

These figures were announced on Sunday by Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov. According to the general, 1,035 foreign mercenaries have been killed by Russian forces and 912 fled Ukraine, leaving 4,877 active in the cities of Kiev, Kharkov, Odessa, Nikolaev and Mariupol.

 

Roughly 400 of these foreign fighters remain embedded with Ukrainian nationalist battalions in the besieged port city of Mariupol, Konashenkov stated. With most of the city under Russian control, these forces have dug in at the sprawling Azovstal metallurgical plant, a gargantuan Soviet-built factory complex spread over 11 square kilometers.

 

โ€œMost of them are citizens of European countries, as well as Canada,โ€ Konashenkov stated, adding that Russian forces have intercepted radio communications from the plant in six foreign languages. After the surrender of more than 1,000 members of Ukraineโ€™s 36th Marines Brigade at the Ilyich Steel and Iron Works in Mariupol earlier this week, which Ukraine denies, the Russian military offered the defenders at Azovstal a final chance to lay down their arms and surrender on Sunday morning, promising that โ€œall who lay down their weapons are guaranteed the preservation of life.โ€

 

No such surrender took place, and the pounding of heavy guns could be heard near the plant on Sunday afternoon. โ€œIn case of further resistance, all of them will be destroyed,โ€ Konashenkov said.

 

โ€œLet me remind you that foreign mercenaries do not have the status of โ€˜combatantsโ€™ under International Humanitarian Law,โ€ Konashenkov said. โ€œThey came to Ukraine to earn money by killing Slavs. Therefore, the best that awaits them is criminal liability and long prison terms.โ€

 

Within days of Russiaโ€™s military assault on Ukraine, the government in Kiev promised visa-free entry for foreigners willing to take up arms against Moscowโ€™s forces. Potential recruits visited Ukrainian embassies across the West and signed up to fight โ€“ often with the blessing of their own governments โ€“ and made their way to the battlefield.

 

However, recruitment was narrowed in March to those with military experience, and paused entirely at the beginning of April. A spokesman for Ukraineโ€™s so-called โ€œInternational Legionโ€ told Canadian media that sending untrained volunteers to the front was becoming more of a hindrance than a help, and supplies of firearms and ammunition were running low.

 

Some of those who made the journey shared horror stories online of being sent to the front lines with inadequate weapons and ammo, while recruitment suffered after a Russian missile strike leveled a training center for these foreigners near the Western Ukrainian city of Lvov. โ€œUp to 180 foreign mercenaries and a large quantity of foreign weapons were destroyed,โ€ Konashenkov said at the time.

Orthodox Christians will celebrate the holiday on April 24, a week after than the feast was held in most of the Western world. According to Mizintsev, the attacks are planned in the Zaporozhye, Nikolaev, Odessa, Sumy, and Kharkov regions. The plan is to later โ€œaccuse Russian troops of mass murder of civilians on this holy day,โ€ he stated.

Serbia accuses UK of violating UN resolution

 

President Vucic has criticized Britain for allegedly shipping anti-tank missiles to Kosovo

 

Senior officials in Serbia have blasted Britain after a report in local media claimed that the country had secretly supplied advanced weapon systems to Kosovo, a breakaway region that Belgrade considers to be under its sovereignty. 'Novosti' claimed on Sunday that 50 NLAW shoulder-fired anti-tank missiles had arrived in the partially recognised statelet, with more weapons to come.

 

According to the newspaper, the delivery was agreed upon by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Albin Kurti, who holds the office of prime minister of Kosovo, in late February.

 

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said the news highlights the hypocrisy of the Western position on Kosovo and its relationship with Serbia, particularly when it comes to weapons purchases. Western nations are preparing Kosovo so it can field its own fully-fledged armed forces, he alleged.

 

โ€œNot only are the British arming them. And they do so with dangerous missiles that proved themselves in Ukraine, so we received the message,โ€ Vucic told Pink TV in an interview on Sunday. โ€œThey are also being armed by the Americans, and the Turks are training their pilots for the future.โ€

 

Kosovo is not allowed to have an army under the 1999 UN Security Council Resolution 1244. The document formalized self-governance in the region after a NATO bombing campaign, which assisted Pristina in breaking away from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The resolution established KFOR, an international peacekeeping force provided by NATO, as the sole authorized military presence in the breakaway region.

 

โ€œMy question is simple: is Resolution 1244 still valid or not. Or has it ceased to be valid after the declaration of independence? It seems that way,โ€ Vucic said, referring to the Kosovo parliamentโ€™s declaration of independence from Serbia in 2008. Belgrade did not accept it, but many Western nations, including the UK, consider Kosovo a sovereign state.

 

Serbian Interior Minister Aleksandar Vulin expressed similar concerns in somewhat stronger terms. โ€œYou cannot arm terrorists and hope for peace,โ€ he told Pink TV.

 

Vulin blasted the authorities in Kosovo for asking NATO to offer them membership, stating that Kosovo has neither the money nor the manpower to be a valuable member of the US-led bloc. He alleged that Pristina wants to be in the alliance to provoke a new military attack by NATO against Belgrade.

 

The allegations from Serbia come one week after the reported delivery of advanced Chinese anti-aircraft systems to the country. Speaking on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said that Beijing was โ€œready to cooperate with all nations.โ€ The diplomat added that the โ€œChinese space station is inviting foreign astronauts to conduct research in outer space together with Chinaโ€™s taikonauts.โ€

 

Wang noted that China is holding consultations with the UN regarding a joint space mission, saying that space exploration should be a joint venture involving the entire international community. According to the official, an international team could get to work as early as the end of this year.

 

The first module of Chinaโ€™s Tiangong was sent into orbit last April, with two more laboratory modules awaiting launch later this year. The addition of these two segments will make the space station fully operational. If everything goes as planned, the mission of the Tiangong, which translates as โ€˜heavenly palaceโ€™, will last more than a decade. According to the South China Morning Post, the space station is expected to become the โ€œbiggest structure built and maintained by a single country in near-Earth orbit.โ€

 

The three Chinese astronauts, who had been working aboard the Tiangong until recently, safely returned to Earth on Saturday. Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping, and Ye Guangfu set a new Chinese record for the longest space mission, spending 182 days in orbit. They performed two spacewalks, with Wang becoming Chinaโ€™s first female astronaut to venture into space.

 

During their stay, the crew installed components for an external mechanical arm, adjusted cameras, and carried out several tests.

 

The next crew is expected to blast off to the Tiangong in May, preceded by an unmanned supply mission. The team, who the Chinese authorities say is currently in training, will be tasked with overseeing the docking of the remaining two laboratory modules.

 

Beijing has yet to announce the names of the astronauts who will be taking part in the mission, or the exact date of the launch.

Turkey comments on its military operation in Iraq

The Turkish military operation in northern Iraq, which was launched on Sunday, has achieved all of its initial objectives, the countryโ€™s defense ministry said in a Monday morning update. Ankara is targeting Kurdish militant forces in Iraqi Kurdistan.

 

The military has reported killing a large number of โ€œterroristsโ€ and destroying many sites associated with them. โ€œAs of now, all of the planned targets have been achieved,โ€ Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said.

 

He added that the operation will continue โ€œwith determination until the last terrorist is neutralized,โ€ although no projected time frame for that was provided.

 

The official was monitoring the progress of the incursion alongside the countryโ€™s senior military leadership. Turkey launched the military action, dubbed Operation Claw-Lock, on Sunday evening.

 

According to the Defense Ministry, Turkish forces destroyed shelters, bunkers, caves, tunnels, ammunition depots, and command posts belonging to those whom Ankara labels as terrorists. Turkish commando forces and artillery were participating in the operation, which also involved multiple air strikes from manned and unmanned aircraft, the report said. Turkey offered no initial casualty assessment.

 

Turkish officials said the operation is targeting the forces of PKK, or the Kurdistan Workersโ€™ Party, an ethnic Kurdish militant force that fought against Ankara for decades, as well as the Syrian Kurdish militia YPG. Both are considered terrorist organizations in Turkey.

 

The Turkish military has conducted a number of cross-border campaigns against Kurdish forces in both Syria and Iraq over the years. The latest operation focused on the Iraqi regions of Metina, Zap, and Avasin-Basyan, according to the Turkish ministry. Ankara claimed its incursion into Iraqi Kurdistan was legitimate under the national self-defense clauses of the UN Charter.

 

โ€œOur activities are carried out in a way that respects the territorial integrity and sovereign rights of friendly and brotherly Iraq,โ€ the defense minister said.

 

The official claimed his nationโ€™s armed forces only targeted โ€œterrorist forcesโ€ and did everything possible to avoid harm to civilians, cultural and religious sites, and the environment.

The virtual summit will take place on May 12. Belize, as chair of the Caribbean Community; Germany, holding the G7 Presidency; Indonesia, holding the G20 Presidency; and Senegal as African Union Chair, will co-host the event.

The owner of this electric car has attached a belt to the rear wheel and generator to his Chevy Bolt which charges the batteries while driving.

Now it's amazing to me that no multi billion dollar EV companies with all their "advanced" technology haven't thought about this logical idea to use movement of the wheels to generate the electricity for charging.

There would no longer be a need to stop and charge batteries at charging stations, or to charge them at home while you sleep. When the car is running it charges the batteries.

Its that simple and they want to tell us that these EV companies that have billions of net-worth, can't hire one competent engineer to make this work?

Let's recap on their "advanced" tech so far.

We have electric cars, which you have to charge everyday, they take ages to charge, lithium causes major pollution and you are dependent on government to provide you with electricity.

So 1 step forward, 3 steps back?

Wall Street bank raises alarm over US economy

Goldman Sachs predicts a 35% chance of a recession within the next two years

The Federal Reserve will face a difficult task in tightening monetary policy enough to cool inflation without causing a recession in the United States, Goldman Sachs Chief Economist Jan Hatzius wrote in a research report on Sunday and seen by Bloomberg. The analyst sees the odds of economic contraction at about 35% within the next two years.

 

According to the report, the regulatorโ€™s main challenge is to narrow the gap in what is a plentiful supply of jobs but scarce labor supply. The Fed also needs to slow wage growth to a pace consistent with its 2% inflation goal by tightening financial conditions enough to reduce job openings without sharply raising unemployment.

 

Achieving a so-called soft landing may be tough, because historically large declines in the job-worker gap in the United States have only occurred during recessions, Hatzius said. โ€œTaken at face value, these historical patterns suggest the Fed faces a hard path to a soft landing.โ€

 

However, the chief economist said that a recession isnโ€™t inevitable because the post-Covid-19 normalizations in labor supply and durable goods prices will help the Federal Reserve. There are more examples of other countries in the Group of 10 advanced economies that have pulled off such a soft landing, he said.

 

According to Hatzius, 11 out of 14 tightening cycles in the United States since World War II were followed by a recession within two years. However, only eight of them can be even partially attributed to Fed tightening โ€“ and soft or โ€˜softishโ€™ landings have been more common in recent times, he said. He has forecast the odds of a US recession in the next 12 months at about 15%.

If you think pierced mutants with blue hair and gender confusion have some sort of right to leverage their position as public school teachers to groom your kids with racist Marxism and sexual confusion, you hate democracy. Schools were not established so that narcissistic stange-os with galaxy-sized daddy issues could work out their personal psychodramas using our childrenโ€™s minds as props. They were established to teach our kids to read, write, do some math, and be useful citizens. And thatโ€™s what we, the People, want.

 

And we, the People, get to make the decision about what gets taught in our classrooms. The emphasis is on โ€œour classrooms,โ€ as in โ€œnot the government employees we hire to instruct classesโ€ classrooms. I know where these people got the idea that the classrooms are their domain and we mere citizens are mere interlopers. They got it in their college education course classrooms, where they were taught that they are entering some sort of special caste by being teachers and have some sort of special claim on what goes on inside the schools that mere parents may not interfere with.

 

Baloney.

 

The kids are ours.

 

The schools are ours.

 

And the curriculum is ours.

 

Public education is not a vehicle to vindicate the feelz and thotz of the nimrods who teach in them. Itโ€™s to do the job we โ€“ the bosses โ€“ decree should be done, and nothing else. Teach our kids their ABCs and how to count.

Taiwan should ramp up its military cooperation with the US and start hosting American troops on its soil as it did before the 1979 switch of diplomatic recognition to Beijing, former US National Security Advisor John Bolton proposed at a policy event on Saturday.

 

Both the Washington and Taipei should boost military spending on the islandโ€™s defense, Bolton insisted, adding that the formal stationing of American troops could be part of a solution to the threat from China.

 

The US maintained a military presence on Taiwan between 1950 and 1979, with as many as 19,000 troops deployed during the period. This changed with the Nixon-era rapprochement with Beijing, which culminated in Washingtonโ€™s change of diplomatic recognition of China to the mainland under Jimmy Carter.

 

However, the US kept informal diplomatic, trade and military relations with Taipei, including by keeping some military personnel as trainers and advisors, as well as guards at the American Institute in Taiwan, the de facto US embassy. The presence of US military personnel in Taiwan had long been an open secret, although last October Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen made an escalatory move by openly acknowledging their presence on the self-governed island.

 

Bolton, who is seen as one of Americaโ€™s most hawkish officials, has long advocated beefing up the number of American troops in Taiwan and taking other steps toward what he describes as deterring an aggressive China. According to Foreign Policy magazine, he managed to push through a troop surge in Taiwan when he was advising the Trump administration. This policy was continued by President Joe Biden.

 

Beijing considers Taiwan part of its sovereign territory and has repeatedly warned the US against supporting any separatist sentiment there. Another uptick in tension over the island was expected last weekend, when US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was supposedly scheduled to visit. Beijing said such a move would cross its โ€œred line.โ€ However, the trip was postponed, reportedly due to Pelosi having tested positive for Covid-19.

 

Bolton made his proposal at the annual Global Taiwan National Affairs Symposium, a high-profile event organized by groups that want the island to formally declare itself a sovereign nation. Senior Taiwanese officials, including President Tsai and Vice President William Lai, were among the speakers.

Stop pretending teachers are, as a group, people worthy of our special respect and deference. Everyone had some great teachers. I remember a couple who made a difference for me. Neither was a pinko with delusions of genderfluidity. But letโ€™s face it โ€“ most teachers are undistinguished time-serving hacks who drone along awaiting their pension. When I think of teachers, I remember the middle school math teacher I saw stagger out of the bar half in the bag at the Dennyโ€™s I worked at. Yeah, the early eighties were lit โ€“ bars in Dennyโ€™s!

 

As a group, โ€œeducatorsโ€ are not smarter than us, and their track record of actually educating is a trainwreck. Do you think kids today are better educated than they were 40 or even 20 years ago? Maybe in terms of pronouns and privilege, but not in anything thatโ€™s not nonsense. For too long we gave teachers the benefit of the doubt. No longer. Now we need to give them orders and ultimatums.

 

Step Two:

 

Ban teachersโ€™ unions. Public employee unions are a disaster anyway, but teachersโ€™ unions are the worst. One lib teacher whining is insufferable. Hundreds of thousands banding together and funding the Democrats in return for influence is an apocalypse. It gives the worst people the most power over the most important thing โ€“ our kidsโ€™ future. Exhibit A: The COVID madness, in which the laziness and paranoia of unionized teachers stole years of our kids' lives. Put overpaid grifters like Randi Weingarten and the rest of her poisonous ilk out of a job, permanently.

 

Step Three:

 

When they called you a โ€œterroristโ€ for participating in democracy, they gave the game away. Activism works. Now we need to take it to the next level by not just going to school board meetings but by running for the school board. And we have to withstand the lies and slanders when we act. Ban CRT. Ban gender weirdness. Ban grooming behavior. Get rid of porn and propaganda. Impose pro-family, pro-American curricula in place of the Marxist dross masquerading as education nowadays. They will scream and they will shout. They will call you โ€œNazis,โ€ โ€œracists,โ€ and โ€œtransphobes.โ€ But guess what? They are already calling you โ€œNazis,โ€ โ€œracists,โ€ and โ€œtransphobes.โ€ Ignore their howls and protests; fire those who will not conform. Be ruthless โ€“ for your kidsโ€™ sake.

The document from late 2015 lists the addresses and some operational details of over one hundred data centers spread across fifteen cities in nine countries. To accompany this document, WikiLeaks also created a map showing where Amazonโ€™s data centers are located.

Amazon, which is the largest cloud provider, is notoriously secretive about the precise locations of its data centers. While a few are publicly tied to Amazon, this is the exception rather than the norm. More often, Amazon operates out of data centers owned by other companies with little indication that Amazon itself is based there too or runs its own data centers under less-identifiable subsidiaries such as VaData, Inc. In some cases, Amazon uses pseudonyms to obscure its presence. For example, at its IAD77 data center, the document states that โ€œAmazon is known as โ€˜Vandalay Industriesโ€™ on badges and all correspondence with building managerโ€.

Amazon is the leading cloud provider for the United States intelligence community. In 2013, Amazon entered into a $600 million contract with the CIA to build a cloud for use by intelligence agencies working with information classified as Top Secret. Then, in 2017, Amazon announced the AWS Secret Region, which allows storage of data classified up to the Secret level by a broader range of agencies and companies. Amazon also operates a special GovCloud region for US Government agencies hosting unclassified information.

Currently, Amazon is one of the leading contenders for an up to $10 billion contract to build a private cloud for the Department of Defense. Amazon is one of the only companies with the certifications required to host classified data in the cloud. The Defense Department is looking for a single provider and other companies, including Oracle and IBM, have complained that the requirements unfairly favor Amazon. Bids on this contract are due tomorrow.

While one of the benefits of the cloud is the potential to increase reliability through geographic distribution of computing resources, cloud infrastructure is remarkably centralised in terms of legal control. Just a few companies and their subsidiaries run the majority of cloud computing infrastructure around the world. Of these, Amazon is the largest by far, with recent market research showing that Amazon accounts for 34% of the cloud infrastructure services market.

Until now, this cloud infrastructure controlled by Amazon was largely hidden, with only the general geographic regions of the data centers publicised. While Amazonโ€™s cloud is comprised of physical locations, indications of the existence of these places are primarily buried in government records or made visible only when cloud infrastructure fails due to natural disasters or other problems in the physical world.

In the process of dispelling the mystery around the locations of Amazonโ€™s data centers, WikiLeaks also turned this document into a puzzle game, the Quest of Random Clues.
