12 Alleged Members Of Two San Jose-Based Norteño Street Gangs Charged With Racketeering-Related Crimes
SAN FRANCISCO - A federal grand jury indicted twelve California residents, charging each with joining criminal conspiracies as part of their alleged membership in San Jose-based Norteño street gangs. The crimes were set out in two separate indictments, both of which were unsealed today. The indictments describe defendants’ alleged membership in or affiliation with one of two gangs, known as El Hoyo Palmas and San Jose Grande, both of which fall under the prison gang, the Nuestra Familia.

Norteños use the number 14 which represents the fourteenth letter of the English alphabet, the letter N, in order to pay allegiance to Nuestra Familia.[11][12] It is sometimes written in Roman numerals as XIV, or a hybrid of Roman and Arabic numerals, X4. Norteños use the color red to signify affiliation.[11] Some Norteños will tattoo themselves with four dots.[13] A Norteño derogatorily refers to a Sureño as a "scrap" (Hispanicized scrapa) or "Sur rat" (south rat). Norteños also use images of the Mexican American labor movement, such as the sombrero, machete, and the logo of the United Farm Workers which is a stylized black Aztec eagle ("Huelga bird").[13]

Mara Salvatrucha, commonly known as MS-13, is an international criminal gang that originated in Los Angeles, California, in the 1970s and 1980s. Originally, the gang was set up to protect Salvadoran immigrants from other gangs in the Los Angeles area. Over time, the gang grew into a more traditional criminal organization. MS-13 is defined by its cruelty, and its rivalry with the 18th Street gang.
