There was a movie in the 1990s titled The Grifters. That was the first time I heard the term. The movie starred Angelica Huston, Annette Bening, John Cusack. It was a good story. Annette Bening was young and hot back then, and there's a good scene where she's running a toy car all over her naked body to seduce her landlord so she won't have to pay rent.
