what it is gets it meaning from Talmud or the Rabbinic tradition … they have to come up with something new after the temple was destroyed and partly as a reaction to the Christianity … (one could say Judaism is a younger religion than the Christianity) the rabbis naturally describe it as a continuity from the old testament era, but that's their self identification … outsiders need not to see it that way.
