Pope, Chicago Cardinal Urges US Government to Enforce Gun Control Policies After Texas Mass Shooting of Children

BY OLIVIA CAVALLARO

MAY 26, 2022 06:56 AM EDT

Religious leaders have begun calling for more serious gun control in the U.S. following the deadly shooting of 19 children and two adults in a Texas elementary school.

The Pope has called for stricter gun control in the United States after the horrific Texas mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde on Tuesday. A Chicago Cardinal agreed with Pope Francis. The Pope spoke out about the Texas mass shooting of children and two adults from the Vatican's St. Peter's Square during the Pope's weekly general audience.

"I am praying for the children and adults who were killed, and for their families. It is time to say enough to the indiscriminate trafficking of arms," Pope Francis said on Wednesday, as reported by The Blaze. The Pope also urged the US government to "make a commitment" to avoid such "tragedies" from occurring again.

Pope Francis and a cardinal say it's time for the U.S. to act on guns

May 25, 20229:55 AM ET BILL CHAPPELL

Pope Francis says that his heart is broken over the mass shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, and that the U.S. must act to prevent the spread of guns.

"I am praying for the children and adults who were killed, and for their families. It is time to say enough to the indiscriminate trafficking of arms," Francis said on Wednesday, during his weekly general audience in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican.

In the attack, 19 students and two adults died. The 18-year-old gunman, who lived in Uvalde, reportedly bought at least two semi-automatic rifles after his most recent birthday.

People should be working now, the pope said, to ensure a similar tragedy can never happen again. In the U.S., his sentiment was shared by another senior Catholic leader: Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, the archbishop of Chicago.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superior_General_of_the_Society_of_Jesus

The Superior General of the Society of Jesus is the official title of the leader of the Society of Jesus – the Roman Catholic religious order which is also known as the Jesuits. He is generally addressed as Father General. The position sometimes carries the nickname of the Black Pope, because of his responsibility for the largest Catholic, male religious order and is contrasted to the white garb of the pope. The thirty-first and current superior general is theReverend Father Arturo Sosa, elected by the 36th General Congregation on 14 October 2016.[1]

Titles

The formal title in Latin is Praepositus Generalis, which may fairly be rendered as "superior general" or even, "president general". The term is like that of military usage (and Ignatius of Loyola had a military background) which is derived from "general", as opposed to "particular". This usage is consistent with other Catholic religious orders, like the Dominicans' "master general", Franciscans' "minister general", Carthusians' "prior general", and with civil posts such asPostmaster General andAttorney General. The Jesuits are organized into provinces, each with a provincial superior, (usually referred to as the "Father Provincial" or just "Provincial"), with the head of the order being the "general superior", for the whole organization. As a major superior, the Superior General is styled "Very Reverend".

Black Pope

"Black Pope" is an unofficial designation given to the position of Superior General of the Order of the Jesuits.[2] The name follows from his leadership of the largest Catholic, male religious order[3] and from the colour of the plain black cassock worn by members of the Society, including the Superior General.[4] This may have originated from a past concern (most prominent around the 16th and 17th centuries) among Protestant European countries concerning the relative power of the Jesuits within the Roman Catholic Church, and partly because the Superior General, like the Pope, is elected for life.

In October 2018, in an interview with EWTN, Sosa argued that "the pope is not the chief of the Church, he's the Bishop of Rome". This was opposed by Pecknold, who argued that it would be wrong to believe that Pope was "merely 'first among equals' ", and insisted that the pope has "supreme authority" over all bishops and the faithful.[23]

ugh oh!

The hairs on the nape of anons neck just rose up stiffly… kek

Did the Superior General put things into better perspective for us, Anons?
