DeSantis Foe Rebekah Jones Discredited: Miami Herald, CNN, MSNBC Hardest Hit
The sordid saga of former Florida Health Department “data scientist” Rebekah Jones has closed. Jones ran the state’s Covid statistics dashboard for a few months starting in March 2020 and later became a press hero for falsely accusing Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of manipulating data and even hiding Covid deaths in order to facilitate reopening the state from lockdown.
She claimed she was told to falsify data and was fired for not doing so – data she never had access to. And a new state report shows Jones wasn’t told to falsify data at all.
Jones is not a scientist, as some press coverage stated, but a data mapper with a master’s degree in geography. She is also a conspiracy theorist hyped in the press, appearing as a DeSantis basher on CNN with disgraced former host Chris Cuomo, and hailed by lefty host Joy Reid on MSNBC.
But perhaps most disappointing was Jones’ hagiographic treatment in the news pages of the Miami Herald, where investigative reporter Sarah Blaskey in particular wrote provocative articles in support of Jones, while minimizing the disturbing charges of Jones cyberstalking a former boyfriend, and other run-ins with the law.
Blaskey didn’t get a byline (just a contributor’s tag) for Saturday’s story that quietly discredited her previous cheerleading for Jones. The headline was passive and underwhelming. “Report: ‘Insufficient evidence’ to prove whistleblower’s claim state manipulated COVID data.”
The trouble began in May 2020, after Jones claimed she was censored by the Florida Department of Health. The Herald, critical of DeSantis’s policy to reopen the state for business and life, eagerly criticized the governor for supposedly withholding death data.
Jones was fired by DeSantis for insubordination, but the Herald continued to cover her bizarre tales of the state manipulating COVID data.
More hagiography came in May 2021, when Jones qualified for “whistleblower status.” Blaskey blasted her Republican opponents and treated her as a Cassandra.
Jones first went on national television last May after Gov. Ron DeSantis slammed her to the press while standing next to former Vice President Mike Pence. DeSantis ignored her concerns and instead questioned her credentials.
Her trumped-up “whistleblower” triumph was accompanied by a harrumphing Herald editorial:
Unfortunately, the possibility of [the Department of Health] manipulating information is not a stretch.
But the most egregious coverage arrived June 4, 2021, in a 5,000-word story by Blaskey: “What whistleblower case reveals about Florida’s COVID response.” Blaskey began after Jones’ house was raided for evidence of illegally accessing a state messaging app.
The raid, at least in Jones’ mind, represented a dramatic escalation in her public dispute with the Florida governor. The months-long feud she said she never wanted or expected transformed her from an anonymous public servant in the information technology department into either a beacon of science and truth or an attention-seeking grifter, depending on whom you ask.

With 5,000 words, Blaskey couldn’t ignore all the negatives, but gave her subject the benefit of the doubt: reckless, but not a liar.
Any mistake, large or small, real or perceived, is red meat for those calling her a fraud.
This sounds ludicrous in retrospect:

Moskowitz, the former head of Florida’s Division of Emergency Management, is a Democratic politician, so his alliance with Jones isn’t a surprise.
Whether or not she was right for the job, Moskowitz told the Herald he recognized Jones was the most trusted source of COVID-19 information for many terrified Floridians, who clung to her every word and tweeted suspicion as gospel.
After the release of the report discrediting Jones’ accusations, National Review writer Charles Cooke’s Twitter thread noted the Herald’s failures to get basic facts right.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is using the recent tragedy in Uvalde Texas as an excuse to push gun control in his country.
Last night he announced that his government is introducing legislation to implement a “national freeze on handgun ownership.” “What this means is that it will no longer be possible to buy, sell, transfer or import handguns anywhere in Canada,” Trudeau explained. “We recognize that the vast majority of gun owners use them safely and in accordance with the law, but other than using firearms for sport shooting and hunting, there is no reason anyone in Canada should need guns in their everyday lives.”
Later, Canadian Minister of Public Safety Marco Mendicino added there would be a “mandatory buyback” program for “assault-style weapons” if the bill passes, calling it Canada’s “most significant action on gun violence in a generation.” Trudeau previously announced a ban on 1,500 types of “assault style” firearms in 2020, which revealed that the term “assault-style” had no legal definition in Canada.
Lastly, Trudeau’s legislation will create new red flag laws to allow courts to both remove guns and suspend licenses of those they deem pose a threat to themselves or others, and magazine sizes will be limited to five rounds.
Meanwhile in America, Biden has turned to bullet control while calling for Congress to offer up bipartisan gun legislation. “They said a .22-caliber bullet will lodge in the lung, and we can probably get it out — may be able to get it and save the life. A 9mm bullet blows the lung out of the body,” Biden said, further demonstrating that he has no idea what he’s talking about.
“So, the idea of these high-caliber weapons is… there’s simply no rational basis for it in terms of self-protection, hunting. Remember, the Constitution was never absolute.”
Previously Biden had seemingly called for banning 9mm pistols too. During a presidential townhall event in 2021 Biden said “The idea you need a weapon that can have the ability to fire 20, 30, 40, 50, 120 shots from that weapon, whether it’s a 9-millimeter pistol or whether it’s a rifle, is ridiculous. I’m continuing to push to eliminate the sale of those things.”

The “fact checkers” were quick to play defense for Biden after that remark, with PolitiFact rating the claim that Biden wants to ban handguns “false” because he “only” wanted to ban 9mm pistols, and that would mean most handguns are still legal. And as if that fact check isn’t pointless enough, a year earlier in 2020, PolitiFact rated it false that Biden wanted to ban 9mm pistols, further proving that they, like Biden, have no idea what they’re talking about.

Further strengthening our gun control laws

Keeping Canadians safe is the Government of Canada’s top priority. We know that one Canadian killed by gun violence is one too many, which is why, two years ago, we banned over 1,500 types of military-style assault firearms. We also strengthened our gun control laws to expand background checks and keep firearms out of the wrong hands. These measures are helping to keep our children and communities safe.
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced the introduction of new legislation to further strengthen gun control in Canada and keep Canadians safe from gun violence. Bill C-21 puts forward some of the strongest gun control measures in over 40 years.
These new measures include:
Implementing a national freeze on handguns to prevent individuals from bringing newly acquired handguns into Canada and from buying, selling, and transferring handguns within the country.
Taking away the firearms licenses of those involved in acts of domestic violence or criminal harassment, such as stalking.
Fighting gun smuggling and trafficking by increasing criminal penalties, providing more tools for law enforcement to investigate firearms crimes, and strengthening border security measures.
Addressing intimate partner violence, gender-based violence, and self-harm involving firearms by creating a new “red flag” law that would enable courts to require that individuals considered a danger to themselves or others surrender their firearms to law enforcement, while protecting the safety of the individual applying to the red flag process, including by protecting their identity. In addition, the government will invest $6.6 million to help raise awareness of the new law and provide supports to vulnerable and marginalized groups to navigate the provisions.
In addition to this new legislation, the Government of Canada will require long-gun magazines to be permanently altered so they can never hold more than five rounds and will ban the sale and transfer of large capacity magazines under the Criminal Code.
