NEW: Sweaty, self-healing living human skin for robots developed by Japanese scientists

Japanese scientists have taken us one step closer to human-like robots by implanting living human skin on robots, giving their fingers skin-like texture as well as water-repellent and self-healing capabilities.

While current silicone skin for robots can mimic human appearance, it falls short in delicate textures such as wrinkles and lacks skin-specific functions.

“The (new) finger looks slightly ‘sweaty’ straight out of the culture medium,” said first author Shoji Takeuchi, Professor at the University of Tokyo, Japan.

“Since the finger is driven by an electric motor, it is also interesting to hear the clicking sounds of the motor in harmony with a finger that looks just like a real one,” he added.

Takeuchi noted in the paper, which was published in the journal Matter, that in order to efficiently cover surfaces with skin cells, they developed a tissue moulding method to directly mould skin tissue around the robot, resulting in seamless skin coverage on a robotic finger.

The team began by immersing the robotic finger in a cylinder filled with a solution of collagen and human dermal fibroblasts, the two main components that make up the skin’s connective tissues.

Takeuchi attributes the study’s success to the collagen and fibroblast mixture’s natural shrinking tendency, which shrank and tightly conformed to the finger.

This layer, like paint primers, provided a uniform foundation for the next coat of cells — human epidermal keratinocytes — to adhere to. These cells constitute 90% of the skin’s outermost layer, giving the robot a skin-like texture and moisture-retaining barrier properties.

The crafted skin was strong and pliable enough to withstand the dynamic movements of the robotic finger curling and stretching.

When injured, the crafted skin could even self-heal like human skin using a collagen bandage that gradually morphed into the skin and withstood repeated joint movements.

“We are surprised by how well the skin tissue conforms to the robot’s surface,” said Takeuchi. “But this work is just the first step toward creating robots covered with living skin.”

The developed skin, on the other hand, is much weaker than natural skin and cannot survive for long without constant nutrient supply and waste removal.

Takeuchi and his colleagues intend to address these concerns by incorporating more sophisticated functional structures within the skin, such as sensory neurons, hair follicles, nails, and sweat glands.

“I think living skin is the ultimate solution to give robots the look and touch of living creatures since it is exactly the same material that covers animal bodies,” said Takeuchi.

NEW - ‘Ukraine today could be East Asia tomorrow’: Japan PM warns

Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida warned a security summit Friday that “Ukraine today may be East Asia tomorrow”, as concerns grow that China could invade democratic, self-ruled Taiwan.

US officials have said they believe China is closely monitoring how Russia’s invasion of Ukraine progresses to assess their own plans when it comes to Taiwan.

Tensions have been soaring over the island, which Beijing views as its territory and has vowed to seize one day, by force if necessary.

Kishida told the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore that while Japan is a peace-loving nation, the changing regional and global security landscape has prompted Tokyo to reassess its own defence position.

“In light of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, countries’ perceptions on security have drastically changed around the world,” he said in a keynote address to defence ministers, senior military officers and analysts attending the summit.

He cited Germany shifting its security policy by raising its defence budget to two percent of gross domestic product and Finland and Sweden abandoning their traditional neutrality to push for NATO membership.

“I myself have a strong sense of urgency that Ukraine today may be East Asia tomorrow,” said Kishida, whose country has joined Western-led sanctions against Russia.

As prime minister, Kishida said he has the responsibility “to protect the lives and assets of the Japanese people” while contributing to regional peace and security.

He warned however that the world must be “prepared for the emergence of an entity that tramples on the peace and security of other countries by force or threat without honouring the rules”.

Kishida called for the “rules-based international order” to be upheld, in what appeared to be a veiled reference to China’s growing assertiveness in the Asia Pacific region.

To protect itself, Japan needs to “enhance our deterrence and response capabilities”, he said, adding that his government will set out a new national security strategy by the end of this year.

Kishida’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party has laid out longer-term policy goals including expanding Japan’s defence budget beyond two percent of GDP, a ratio that would put it on par with members of NATO.

That would mark a departure from Japan’s political tradition of capping defence spending below one percent of its GDP, which stands at around $5 trillion.

Capitol Police report indicates January 6 security failures happened under Pelosi's supervision

An internal USCP report paints a damning picture of leadership that caused the ill-preparedness of the department for January 6.

An internal Capitol Police report about the Jan. 6 Capitol riot indicates significant security failures that day under House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's watch, according to a recent news report.

The report by the Breitbart News Network details numerous errors made by the department on the day of the incident, including a failure to mobilize specialized civil disturbance units, in addition to an earlier dismantling of an intelligence unit dedicated to tracking threats across social media platforms.

Specifically, the report, obtained earlier this week by Just the News, reveals that, as some have been saying for months, the Capitol Police received intelligence reports from branches of the U.S. intelligence apparatus – including the FBI – warning that there could be violence on January 6, 2021.

That information, however, never turned into a coherent action plan to thwart such a threat should it occur, which it did when protesters stormed the Capitol Building as lawmakers attempted to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election.

"The assessment for 1/6 contained a BLUF [bottom line up front] that did not express the severity of the threat or the fact that USCP [U.S. Capitol Police] actually had knowledge of a plan in place," reads one section of the report. "The statement that protesters may be armed was included, but it was never expressed with the urgency that they planned to overtake the Capitol and target Members of Congress."

Referring to Pelosi's leadership, the report also states: "The social media unit was immediately and essentially dismantled under the new leadership. New office reassignments and steering away from the concepts of having subject matter experts may have contributed to the tragedy.

"Individuals with the most experience extrapolating open-source material were not tasked with reviewing social media to glean intel related to the event."

The after-action report has reached circulation as members of the January 6 special House panel to investigate the riot on Thursday night premiered the first installment of their primetime presentation pertaining to their months-long investigation into the incident.

Pelosi has been implicated in a number of questions about security planning and execution on Jan. 6, but has yet to be scrupulously pressed by her colleagues or the media about her role in the security failures of the day.
