A silent heart condition is predicted to kill 40,000 Brits over the next five years.
Hundreds of thousands of over-55s are living with aortic valve stenosis (AVS) but new analysis suggests the NHS will be unable to diagnose and treat it, reports the Mirror.
Without treatment up to 59% of these Brits will die over the five years to 2024. Around 10,000 of these deaths will be among 55 to 64-year-olds, with 29,548 among 65 to 74-year-olds.
Previous analysis suggests that without symptoms, the chance of a sudden cardiac death is less than 1%. Once symptoms develop the risk goes up to 34%.

I think this field is very exciting. At this moment, there's a explosion of publications on pericarditis. In particular, you have advanced imaging that helps diagnose pericarditis and now you have therapeutics such as the IL-1 blockers, rilonacept in the treatment. Patients are coming here for these new imaging and treatments.
… The outlook is quite good for recurrent pericarditis if you catch it early. The biggest mistake that we see here is that the acute episode is not recognized properly and when recognized it's undertreated and patients come here with multiple recurrent pericarditis episodes.
Now, one thing that I should mention is that the MRI is very, very useful because it can prognosticate how bad the severity is and how many months to years you may need to be put on therapy.
… Another important point is that now the mRNA vaccines such as with Pfizer and Moderna, can rarely cause myocarditis or mild pericarditis. The phenotype or a certain person that gets this would be a young 20-year old male that has a lot of testosterone and testosterone may play some role, and they can get a myocarditis, pericarditis. Usually, this is very self-limited, very self-limited and goes away over time. And the treatment is very, very similar to treating recurrent pericarditis from other causes.
So in summary, I think there's a lot of excitement in this field. Pericarditis, as I mentioned, we have the advanced imaging and new therapeutics in treating this problematic disease. Thank you very much.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh found that nearly nine in 10 people who could only think of fewer than 13 animals within the allotted minute had a tumour.

Fellow inmates planned to strangle Ghislaine Maxwell in exchange for money, her lawyers have claimed, as they pleaded for leniency at her sentencing for sex trafficking later this month.
“One of the female inmates in Ms Maxwell’s housing unit told at least three other inmates that she had been offered money to murder Ms Maxwell and that she planned to strangle her in her sleep,” her attorneys claimed.
“Ms Maxwell has to live with this threat every day that she is housed in the MDC and every day that she is incarcerated in the prison where she is designated.”

A U.S. District Court judge sentenced Joél-Léhi Organista to 15 years in federal prison Wednesday, after the former Salt Lake City school board member pleaded guilty in January to federal charges for production and distribution of child pornography.
Organista, 30 — who resigned from the school board in 2021 — will also be required to register as a sex offender and complete 15 years of supervised release after his incarceration.
… Organista had also pleaded guilty in November to two state-level charges: one first-degree felony for aggravated sexual abuse of a child, and one second-degree felony for enticing a minor by Internet or text. Nine other counts, including object rape of a child, were dropped.
… Organista was first elected to the school board in fall 2020 and previously volunteered at Horizonte Instruction and Training Center. The interactions with minors and downloads occurred between January 2021 — when Organista took his position on the school board — and June 2021, according to court documents.

When Utah County Attorney David Leavitt decided to go to Ukraine earlier this week to collect documents from his Kyiv apartment, he’d planned for several contingencies in case the city was invaded by the Russian military.
He had extra cash in case the internet went down and the ATMs didn’t work. He’d also rented a car, deciding it safest to not rely on public transportation in case the trains stopped running.
But something unexpected happened that halted what was supposed to be a quick trip to Ukraine to gather a few personal items: Leavitt is stuck in Amsterdam after he tested positive for COVID-19.
It’s the second time Leavitt has been ill with the coronavirus.
Leavitt, who taught in Ukraine with the American Bar Association for more than a decade, has owned an apartment in Kyiv for several years. With news of a threat of a Russian invasion, Leavitt said in an interview on Wednesday that he’d booked the hasty trip to Ukraine to get paperwork proving ownership of his apartment and to collect some personal effects.
“We flew from Salt Lake to Amsterdam and Amsterdam to Kiev,” he said Wednesday, “and spent 24 hours there and got things taken care of then visited with some close friends of ours.”
… “So much of what I do in the United States, as the Utah County Attorney, is directly tied to years in the Ukraine,” he said. “I’m sad about it, because I not only love the Ukranian people, I have worked hard to help the legal system.”
