The Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA) harboured a now-notorious paedophile in its ranks for 29 years between 1979 and 2007, the organisation has confirmed.

Roy Wenlock, for whom the WACA created the full-time role of 'development officer' in 1979, was one of three sex offenders investigated in WA Supreme Court Justice Peter Blaxell's 452-page parliamentary inquiry into historical child sexual abuse at Anglican hostels, published in 2012.

WACA chief executive Christina Matthews confirmed to ABC Sport that the organisation became aware of Wenlock's offending during the 2012-13 summer and has since taken a range of measures to address the issue, which is the subject of ongoing civil litigation against the WACA.

In Justice Blaxell's report, Wenlock, who died in 2007, was revealed to have been a prolific abuser who gained sexual gratification from "wrestling" sessions — simulated sex in which Wenlock would ejaculate — with boys placed in his care between 1963 and 1977. In some cases, Wenlock's offending escalated to masturbation and oral sex with the boys.

Blaxell's report was also unequivocal in its conclusion that Wenlock's grooming and abuse of boys continued at the WACA.

One of those boys, now a man in his mid-40s, confirmed to ABC Sport that while performing WACA "drinks boy" duties under Wenlock's direction in the late 1980s, he was taken back to Wenlock's house with other boys and witnessed abuse.

Between 1979 and 2007, Wenlock fulfilled a range of roles at the WACA, most of which gave him unsupervised access to children.

For decades, he was the organisation's full-time development officer, conducting junior coaching clinics around the state, and also served as WACA ground announcer, museum curator, and as a WACA pennant umpire. He also umpired in junior competitions and was secretary of the Western Australian Youth Cricket Council.

In 2000, Wenlock received the Australian Sports Medal for services to cricket.

'Whatever you do, don't go to his house'

In 2012, Justice Blaxell concluded there was "ample evidence to show that Wenlock would engage in grooming behaviour" with boys he encountered across his four decades at the WACA.

"In this position he was required to engage in various cricketing activities with young teenagers, and he would sometimes invite individual boys back to his home," Blaxell wrote.

Corruption watchdog releases report on lobbying of the Queensland government

A report by Queensland's Crime and Corruption Commission suggests the risk of corruption had "intensified" inside the state government, amid a surge in lobbying.

It found a small number of key groups and individuals appeared to have a "disproportionate amount of access" to the government and could be using those relationships to "influence government decision."

"In some instances, the individuals or groups afforded access have long-standing and close political or personal connections with the decision-makers or government they are seeking to influence," the report, published on Friday, said.

"Further, in some circumstances these individuals have been engaged by a political party or government agency while still involved in influencing practices, such as lobbying."

Meanwhile, the report, Influencing Practices in Queensland, also found there had been "a substantial increase" in lobbying activities in the state.

"The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and associated economic recovery efforts, appear to have contributed to the recent surge in lobbying activities in Queensland," the report said.

More than 80,000 homes across Queensland have been left empty, prompting calls for action to be taken against those owners who don't rent them out.

The revelation comes as Australia experiences its worst rental crisis on record.

Australian Bureau of Statistics data revealed that 87,000 residential properties in Queensland weren't being rented out, while there were 577,000 across Australia, The Courier Mail reported.

Property expert Michael Matusik believes there should be new tax measures put in place to 'incentivise or penalise' owners to release the homes for rent.

'Around 29 per cent of investment properties are not rented out. They are sitting there vacant,' Mr Matusik said.

According to Urban Utilities, the Sunshine State's largest water provider, 19,500 houses in lower southeast Queensland had their water connection turned on.

However, it was discovered that there were no one living in those homes for many months.

Unitywater executive manager customer and community Katherine Gee said their numbers showed 2,104 houses had used 1,000 litres or less water over a 90-day period.

Ms Gee added: 'It is important to note that it cannot be categorically stated that these properties are 'vacant'.

'We operate in a desirable region and some of these properties may be holiday homes or homes that are occupied for only parts of the year.'

Fairfax County Police reported, “Officers on scene for shots fired at 7900 Tysons Corner Center. A fight broke out between a small group, one man described as a blk male in a blk hoodie w/blk jeans & white shoes displayed a firearm & discharged weapon. No reports of injuries right now. Avoid area.”

Hawaii teacher bragged about sex with 13-year-old boy during school lunch breaks, shared child porn with fellow teacher: Feds

A Hawaii teacher shared child porn with a fellow teacher and bragged about having sex with a 13-year-old boy during school lunch breaks, according to federal prosecutors.

Alden Bunag was arrested on Wednesday by FBI agents at an Oahu high school – where he worked as a summer school teacher, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported. Honolulu FBI agents also executed a search warrant at Bunag's home.

Bunag was charged with distributing child pornography.

The Hawaii public school teacher reportedly sent more than 3,300 messages to another teacher in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Included in the messages were photos and videos of child porn, according to federal court documents. The teacher in Philadelphia was arrested in October.

KHON-TV reported, "The documents added that 'Bunag claimed to have sex with (the boy) at the school during lunch breaks… Described (the boy) as a former student and knew that he was a minor at the time.'"

Court records said that Bunag confessed to law enforcement that he recorded his sexual encounters with the 13-year-old boy – who was a former student – and sent the videos to others through the Telegram messenger app.

The outlet added, "Records said, 'he also admitted to distributing the video recording of his sexual contact… admitted to distributing child pornography involving other minor victims.'"

Bunag appeared in federal court on Thursday. He will remain in custody until his next hearing on June 21.

The Pearl City High School listed "Alden Bunag" as a teacher in a cached version of the school's website, but he is not listed as a teacher in the current listing of staff.

A former student told Hawaii News Now, "It's absolutely disgusting. To be honest, though, I wouldn’t put it past him just because he was an odd guy."

Another former student said, "Definitely was very friendly with all of the kids, especially the male students."

The former student added that Bunag would offer to take senior portraits for students “free of charge.”

Another former student said, "I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s another case that is related to him that somebody has been groomed by him."

The FBI said Bunag was a teacher, ran a photography business, and taught dance classes.

Criminal defense attorney Victor Bakke told Hawaii News Now, "Many people who are attracted to children or suffer from pedophilia, they do seek out job positions or employment where they’re around children. It is just a sign of the times when people with like interests can find each other and engage in this type of activity and discussion."

Biden Downplays Plans To Meet With Crown Prince MbS, Saudis Immediately Contradict Him

On Friday, President Biden attempted to downplay his first face-to-face meeting with the crown prince and de facto ruler of the kingdom since Khashoggi's death, saying discussions with MbS will take place as part of a broader "international meeting".

"I’m not going to meet with MBS. I’m going to an international meeting. And he’s going to be a part of it, just like there were people part of the discussion today," Biden claimed. He stressed that the reason for the trip to Riyadh is not to meet the crown prince per se. This also following the dubious White House assertions that it's not about pressing the Saudis to pump more oil.

When Biden was asked by reporters about how he's going to address and handle the Khashoggi killing with MbS, the president simply replied - "The same way I’ve been handling it," but without explanation.

Biden is expected to attend a meeting of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) heads of state; however, recent reporting in CBS News contradicts Biden's assertion that he isn't going to meet with MbS, given it seems the Saudis have it in their minds that a meeting will indeed happen:

Toyota faces $2 billion class action as 260,000 Aussies affected by ‘defective’ vehicles

More than 260,000 Aussie car owners could score a major payout from car giant Toyota, with the largest class action in Australia underway.

Ken Williams will never forget the “horrendous” moment his car suddenly began belching smoke at a set of traffic lights – leaving his young children fearing the vehicle was on fire.

The Queenslander had purchased a new Toyota Prado in 2016 – but within eight or nine months, problems started to emerge with the vehicle emitting worrying levels of foul-smelling white smoke.

The concerned dad took the Prado back to the dealership to rectify the issue, and was told there was a quick fix – but to this day, the problems remain, despite Mr Williams returning to the dealership up to 12 times as he desperately tried to find a solution.

He told news.com.au he could still remember the look of fear on his kids’ faces when the smoke began billowing as his family sat in traffic.

“It was pretty scary – all of the kids were in the back and I remember the look on their faces, because they thought the car was on fire,” he said.

“We didn’t know what was going on and it was horrendous – it’s still stuck in my mind to this day.”

In 2019, Australian law firm Gilbert + Tobin brought a class action against Toyota on behalf of people who owned a Prado, HiLux or Fortuner in the years 2015 to 2020.

The cars in question were defective, owing to faulty diesel particulate filters, and caused financial loss to the vehicle owners.

The Federal Court ruled against Toyota in a landmark judgment in April, awarding Mr Williams – the lead applicant – more than $18,000 in damages.

But it’s just the tip of the iceberg for Toyota, with the company now facing what could become the largest ever class action payout in Australia, with more than 260,000 vehicle owners potentially entitled to damages totalling more than $2 billion.

Toyota has already lodged an appeal in the Federal Court of Australia, challenging the “factual and legal basis for the award of damages.”

From Monday, Gilbert + Tobin will start sending out court-approved notices to the hundreds of thousands of eligible vehicle owners across the nation, urging them to register their details.

With families across the country now feeling the pinch as cost of living pressures start to bite, it could mean a very welcome payday for eligible Toyota owners, who stand to pocket the approximate reduction in value of each vehicle at the time it was sold, which is 17.5 per cent of the average retail price, plus an additional 10 per cent for excess GST.

For a person who paid $60,000 for their vehicle, that equates to at least $10,500, with up to $14,000 per vehicle on the table.

More than a dozen fire crews have been called to a fire at a major power substation south of Sydney, with Fire and Rescue NSW reporting multiple explosions at the site.

A large smoke plume from the blaze is affecting nearby Wollongong and Unanderra, with flights at nearby Shellharbour Airport delayed.

Fire and Rescue NSW urged residents to stay indoors with windows and doors closed until air quality improves.

"The fire is not escalating and emergency services are now preparing to extinguish the fire," a Transgrid spokesperson said.

"All personnel on site are accounted for and safe.

"The smoke emanating from the site is not toxic. This will continue for some time."
