Biden to unveil plan for next pandemic while seeking $88 billion in funds

 

The Biden administration is preparing a new defense strategy against pandemics and other biological threats that applies lessons from COVID-19 and puts the White House at the center of any future US response.

 

Research suggests there’s a 50-50 chance of another COVID-like pandemic — or one that is more deadly — over the next 25 years, according to a senior administration official who spoke under the condition of anonymity as the strategy isn’t yet public, and the administration’s plan is the result of more than a year of work by U.S. national security and public health experts to improve the nation’s framework for preparedness, response and recovery.

 

As soon as this month, the administration is expected to release a National Biodefense Strategy that will outline its approach to facing biological threats to humans, animals, environments and crops, according to people familiar with the matter. The plan, along with $88.2 billion in funding the president is seeking, would shift how the government handles pandemic preparedness by more clearly describing responsibilities, goals and deadlines — an attempt to avoid the confusion and agency infighting that plagued the U.S. pandemic response.

 

“The bottom line is that we know what it takes to prevent and essentially take outbreaks off the table as a threat to society,” said Andrew Hebbeler, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy’s principal assistant director for health and life science, who has been involved in developing the strategy. “This is probably the most focused plan to date that aims to do that.”

 

But people familiar with the new strategy have concerns that the lengthy, jargon-filled document won’t strengthen U.S. biodefense unless the government invests tens of billions of dollars to back its ideas.

 

The new National Biodefense Strategy builds on Biden’s previously released American Pandemic Preparedness Plan and his request in the 2023 budget for $88.2 billion in mandatory funding for biodefense purposes, which, if approved by Congress, would be made available over five years. The ideas communicated in those documents will be the backbone of the forthcoming report, according to the people.

Interest surged during the George W. Jan Koum, who controls a multi-billion-dollar charitable foundation, has not uttered a public word even as many other wealthy Ukrainians and Russians announce donations toward humanitarian relief efforts.

 

But based on an examination of tax returns filed by Koum’s foundation before the war, the publicity-shy WhatsApp founder, who arrived in California as a teenager, is more entwined than meets the eye with the events rocking the country he left behind as a 16-year-old. His donations, only a sliver of which have been previously reported, include tens of millions of dollars to Jewish organizations now involved in relief efforts in Eastern Europe.

 

For example, from 2019 to 2020, the latest year for which there is a tax return, the Koum Family Foundation donated about $17 million to the European Jewish Association, an organization headquartered in Brussels that launched a campaign in March to provide housing, food and clothing to refugees from the war. Nearly all of the group’s 2019 budget came from Koum.

 

With $10.6 million in gifts over that same period, Koum’s foundation is also one of the most significant donors to another group involved in relief efforts: the Federation of Jewish Communities of the CIS. The group, whose name refers to the Commonwealth of Independent States, an association of former Soviet territories, announced the establishment of an ambulance fleet to evacuate patients throughout Ukraine.

It is unknown whether Koum continued to make donations in 2021 and afterward because his foundation and all of the past grantees contacted by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency have either ignored requests for comment or declined to speak on the record. JTA contacted more than a dozen of the nonprofits, several of which said they were prohibited from publicly acknowledging Koum’s giving as a condition of their gift.

 

Due to the secrecy marking his charitable giving, as well as his personal life, Koum’s profile as a philanthropist over the past several years has gone almost unnoticed. However, tax returns reveal that Koum, with a fortune estimated between $9.8 billion and $13.7 billion, has quietly become one of the largest donors to Jewish causes in the world.

More than 40 years ago, Orson Welles, the legendary actor and filmmaker, in an iconic TV commercial, intoned in his distinctive baritone, “Some things can’t be rushed – good music and good wine.” Welles then concluded the ad for Paul Masson wines with the famous slogan, “We will sell no wine before its time.”

 

Though a bit far afield, similar thoughts about the passage of time ran through this writer’s mind when considering the Talmudic Encyclopedia, known in Hebrew as Encyclopedia Talmudit.

 

Initiated by Rabbi Meir Bar-Ilan (1880-1949), the Talmudic Encyclopedia was developed with the goal of summarizing the major halachic subjects discussed in the Talmud and post-Talmudic rabbinic literature from the Gaonic period to the present day. The first volume was released in 1947, and over the years, 47 additional volumes have been published.

 

In December, the 48th volume of the Talmudic Encyclopedia was issued, and the editors have now reached the Hebrew letter “mem.” The issuing of this volume was marked by a special celebration celebrating the 75th anniversary of the project at the official residence of Isaac Herzog – who in addition to currently serving as president is the grandson of Rabbi Yitzhak Halevi Herzog, the first chief rabbi of the State of Israel and a supporter of the project at its outset.

 

The Talmudic Encyclopedia, with its distinctive yellow cover and green design accents, has long been a staple on the bookshelves of Jewish homes, yeshivot and institutions of higher learning. It also mentions "mental health" a dozen times, with a focus on youth. The White House will "identify promising practices" to ensure schools provide "accessible and supportive" mental and other health services for LGBTQI+ students, likely meaning the gender-affirming care model that prioritizes drug therapy and even surgery.

 

The order lumps in talk therapy to address a child's possibly transient gender confusion, a more cautious approach than starting puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones, with active counseling to "suppress or change" sexual orientation.

 

Such "conversion therapy" is a "discredited practice that research indicates can cause significant harm, including higher rates of suicide-related thoughts and behaviors by LGBTQI+ youth."

Northern Syria Chaos: Turkish-Backed Al-Shamiya Launches Large Attack On Ahrar Al-Sham Over HTS Ties (Video)

 

On June 18, the al-Shamiya Front launched a large-scale attack on key positions of the Ahrar al-Sham Movement in the Turkish-occupied part of northern Syria.

According to Syrian pro-opposition sources, including the Syrian Observatory for Human Right, al-Shamiya Front militants stormed the villages of Tall Battal and Abla in the northern Aleppo countryside, where Ahrar al-Sham maintains key positions.

 

Al-Shamiya Front militants managed to captured some positions in the two villages. However, clashes are still taking place there.

 

In response to the surprise attack, Ahrar al-Sham militants attacked positions of the al-Shamiya Front near the town of Jarabulus that is located right on the border line with Turkey.

 

Now, the al-Shamiya Front is preparing for a new push. The faction is amassing hundreds of militants and heavy weapons, including battle tanks, in the outskirts of Tall Battal and Abla. Ahrar al-Sham has also brought in fresh reinforcements.

Israel Strikes Military Positions In Gaza Following Rocket Attack On Ashkelon (Videos)

 

On June 18, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) carried out a series of strikes on positions of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Hamas Movement, in the Gaza Strip.

 

The strikes were a response to a rocket attack targeted the town of Ashkelon. Palestinian fighters launched a single rocket at the Israeli town, which is located some ten kilometers to the north of Gaza, in the early morning hours. The IDF said that the rocket was intercepted by the Iron Dome system.

However, as the war in Ukraine drags on, started by the West in 2014, after its political and intelligence elites launched the Neo-Nazi Maidan insurrection, Europeans don’t only lack even a mere semblance of unity on most crucial matters concerning the EU (itself fading into geopolitical insignificance and obsolescence), but are even severely divided on how its future should look like.

 

The once-powerful colonialist continent pillaging the rest of the planet for centuries has become a cheap bargaining chip in a conflict between the old Cold War rivals. As the 19th-century French writer Alphonse Karr said, the more things change, the more they stay the same. If there ever was any illusion of European sovereignty, it vanished on February 24, when Russia decided it has had enough.

 

Despite initial “moral support” by the EU public, it seems Ukraine was just another (very) temporary trend in the minds of the amorphic masses. According to the poll conducted by the Center for Liberal Studies, Europeans remain “largely united” in backing Kiev, but are divided over how long they’re willing to endure the conflict’s economic fallout. The survey across 10 countries suggests attention may turn to fears about the conflict’s wider impact, particularly the rising cost of living. ”EU governments will have to contend with this as they seek to maintain pressure against Moscow,” according to authors Ivan Krastev and Mark Leonard. A bit more than a third of those surveyed want the conflict to be over as soon as possible, even at Ukraine’s expense, while over a fifth (22%) stated it should “last as long as it takes to punish Russia and restore all of Ukraine’s land.”

Department of Justice Stymies Congressional Attempt to Get Information on Hunter Biden Probe

 

The Department of Justice (DOJ) headquarters has intervened in a congressional effort to get details on the agency’s probe into President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden.

 

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), a member of the panel, in May asked U.S. Attorney for Delaware David Weiss, who is investigating Hunter Biden, for answers because attempts to get information from the DOJ have met with silence or little information.

 

Grassley and Johnson expressed concerns over conflicts of interest, including noting that Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicholas McQuaid was a partner with an attorney that has represented Hunter Biden.

 

They also pointed to information they said indicates that the Biden family may have “undue influence” over judicial officers in Delaware.

 

They asked for details such as how many employees under Weiss have recused from the Hunter Biden probe, which involves the younger Biden’s business dealings with China among other areas.

 

Instead of hearing from the office of Weiss, a Trump appointee, the lawmakers received a letter (pdf) dated June 9 sent by Peter Hyun, who is the acting assistant attorney general and is based in Washington.

 

Hyun noted he was responding to the senators’ letter to Weiss.

 

Hyun said the DOJ has previously outlined the agency’s policies with regards to ethics and recusal protocols.

 

“While the Department appreciates your interest in this matter, consistent with its policies, it will not be able to provide you with any further information regarding Department officials’ employment or specific recusal decisions,” he said.

 

“With respect to your remaining inquiries, while the Department strives to provide Congress with as much information as possible to satisfy its oversight interests, the Department also has a longstanding policy, spanning Administrations, not to confirm, deny, or comment on individual matters that may be under investigation, except under limited circumstances not applicable here,” he added.

 

“We hope this information is helpful. While we are unable to provide anything further on these topics, please do not hesitate to contact us on other matters where we may be able to be of assistance,” Hyun concluded.

 

Hunter Biden said in December 2020 that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware was “investigating my tax affairs.”

 

“Per DOJ policy, we cannot comment on an ongoing investigation,” the office said in response at the time.

A librarian who confessed to spraypainting "groomer" on two libraries targeting children with "Pride Story Time" events has been charged with "multiple hate crimes" and two counts of malicious destruction of property, Prince George's County Police announced on Thursday.

Prince George’s County Police detectives charged a man for vandalizing two public libraries in the county. These incidents occurred at the Greenbelt Branch Library and the New Carrollton Branch Library. The suspect is 30-year-old Charles Sutherland of Takoma Park.

 

The preliminary investigation revealed Sutherland spray-painted the word “groomer” on the exteriors of both buildings. The vandalism at the Greenbelt location occurred on June 4, 2022, and on June 9, 2022, at the branch in New Carrollton.

 

The PGPD assumed the investigation into these incidents on June 15, 2022.

 

Sutherland is charged with two counts of malicious destruction of property and multiple hate crimes related to defacing the building. He has confessed to the incidents.

‘Betraying the American people’: Leaked video reveals Joe Biden’s ‘hush hush’ migrant invasion

The men were standing beside a Boeing 737 flown in from Fort Bliss, Texas, by iAero Airways under charter by the federal government.

Damning footage

 

The 51-minute footage was obtained under a Freedom of Information Act request by former Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, a Republican candidate for governor in 2022.

 

Throughout the footage, police Sgt. Michael Hamborsky expresses frustration that local police have been given no information about the flights arriving after curfew at the airport, in breach of security protocols.

 

“You’re on a secure facility here; we really don’t know anything and we’re in charge of security,” he tells one of the federal contractors.

 

“This is anti all our security stuff.”

 

The iAero flight that so puzzled Hamborsky that night was just one of the almost nightly charter flights that began shuttling migrants into the suburban Westchester airport after curfew from places like McAllen, El Paso and Houston, Texas, last year beginning at least as far back as Aug. 8. The flights stopped only after The Post revealed their existence in late October.

 

The bodycam footage shows Hamborsky courteously but persistently questioning a dozen federal contractors who are bustling around the tarmac overseeing migrants disembarking and boarding American Dream charter buses waiting on the tarmac between about 6:15 and 7 a.m.

 

Hamborsky ascertains that the plane arrived at 11:48 p.m. the previous night with 142 migrants on board.

 

Also on board were 12 “chaperones” — employees of MVM Inc., a controversial private security firm that was a major contractor for the CIA and the NSA in Iraq, and which last year signed a $136 million contract with the federal government to transport illegal migrants and unaccompanied children around the country.

 

The bodycam begins in the pre-dawn darkness at 6:09 a.m. when Hamborsky parks his squad car on the airfield next to the hangar of Ross Aviation, whose employees are assisting with refueling the plane.

The yearly deployment to the Balkans is for a 10-day drill with NATO partners, but troops usually stay for longer. More than 400 paratroopers will deploy to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo, but they will be denied the medal and bonus compensation that they are accustomed to receiving for overseas deployment.

 

Instead of deployment, they have been asked to use the month to “reflect on where they have fallen short of what we all expect of our army.” Personnel that has been directly involved in the sex tape will be further removed from the upcoming Air Manoeuvre Battlegroup which is typically held for readiness to deploy in response to global crises.

In exclusive interviews with The Defender, more commercial airline pilots discuss COVID-19 vaccine injuries and the “hostile” industry environment injured and unvaxxed pilots must navigate.

These are just some of the many COVID-19 vaccine-related adverse events reported by commercial airline pilots and by a growing number of advocacy groups representing aviation industry workers.

 

According to these individuals and groups, the number of pilots speaking out about their vaccine injuries is dwarfed by the number of pilots who are still flying despite experiencing concerning symptoms — but not speaking out because of what they describe as a culture of intimidation within the aviation industry.

 

These individuals fear they will lose their jobs and livelihoods in retaliation if they reveal their symptoms or go public with their stories, sources told The Defender.

 

Still, a growing number of pilots are coming forward.

 

Last month, The Defender published the accounts of several pilots — and of the widow of a pilot who died from a vaccine-related adverse event.

 

Since then, more pilots have shared their stories, including one who is currently flying for a commercial airline.

 

A growing number of advocacy organizations, representing workers across the aviation industry and in several countries, are joining these pilots in speaking out.

 

The Defender previously reported on actions by the U.S. Freedom Flyers (USFF) and other legal advocates in the U.S.

 

Since then, representatives from the Global Aviation Advocacy Coalition (GAA) and the Canada-based Free To Fly also spoke with The Defender about their initiatives.

 

Meanwhile, pilots in Canada and the Netherlands recently reported significant legal victories in separate vaccine-related cases.

Steven Hornsby, a 52-year-old pilot with a legacy passenger airline company, was once an active weightlifter and cyclist, biking 10-26 miles every other day.

 

He is also a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and Operation Enduring Freedom. Per FAA requirements, he passed 24 medical exams in the past 12 years, including 12 electrocardiograms (ECGs).

 

Hornsby told The Defender, “I’ve never had any cardiovascular issues in my life, nor have I ever had any major health issues … I eat healthy and live what I believe to be a balanced lifestyle.”

 

Hornsby, however, is not flying today because, he said, he was “coerced … to get the COVID-19 vaccine,” and his employer “made it very clear that all employees would be required to get it and that medical/religious exemptions would be very difficult to get.”

 

Hornsby’s difficulties began after receiving the second dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

The confrontation between Lebanon and the Israeli occupation entity over a maritime border in the Mediterranean Sea intensified after a ship operated by gas exploration company Energean arrived on June 5 to begin drilling in the disputed Karish gas field, pushing Hezbollah to warn the Israeli entity of using force.

 

The Secretary-General of Hezbollah Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah warned the Israeli entity on 9 June that the Karish gas field is a "red line", demanding the entity to halt its activities in the field.

 

"Everything is on the table for the resistance […] we do not want a war, but we do not fear one. Israel must halt its activities in the Karish field and swiftly and immediately withdraw its ship from there," Sayyed Nasrallah warned in a televised speech.

 

"The company that owns the drilling ship should swiftly withdraw it, and it should be fully responsible for any losses, be they material or human", Nasrallah added. "We have the right to do everything needed to collect the required information to execute any option that we might find adequate."

 

"The Resistance surely has the financial, military, and security capabilities to prevent the enemy from extracting oil and gas from the Karish gas field," he added.

 

Hezbollah’s Deputy Secretary-General Naim Qassem told Reuters that Hezbollah is ready to take action "including force" against Israeli gas operations in disputed waters once the Lebanese government adopts a clearer policy on the issue.

 

"Main course is to defend our wealth"

 

Laure Abi-Khalil, a professor of political science at the Lebanese University, said that Hezbollah has been "representing the Lebanese Resistance" and will use force against any threat.

 

"When the resistance finds that there is a danger to the gas wealth, it has every right to respond and to defend our rights and the right of future generations," Abi-Khalil told Al Mayadeen English.

 

"Let's not forget that the Resistance is offering its capabilities to support the Lebanese government so that it can improve its negotiating ability."

 

Should Hezbollah use force to stop "Israel" from developing the Karish gas field if talks to resolve the maritime dispute stalled, Abi-Khalil said, "The Resistance does not seek war for war, but whenever the need arises, the Resistance has its defense strategy."

 

"After Lebanon's economic crisis, the main course is to defend our wealth, to ensure our sustainability," Abi-Khalil noted.

Following Hezbollah leader's threats of using force to stop developing the Karish gas field, the US expressed concern on the second day, June 10, about the escalating tone and rhetoric being used around the issue.

After the US recognized "Jerusalem" as the capital of the entity, "the Knesset passed the Jewish National Law, which proves the enemy’s implementation of the policy of making everything an Israeli and Judaization inside occupied Palestine," Abi-Khalil added.

 

Abi-Khalil stressed that the Israeli enemy has moved to consolidate its influence abroad through the implementation of regional foreign policy, proving once again the "political-diplomatic capabilities of the enemy and its ability to persuade Western companies, including the Energean Power vessel, to explore Karish."

 

"This is due to the pressures exerted by the United States and the Zionist lobby on international companies that share with their economic interests and material capabilities," she told Al Mayadeen English.

 

Relaunching negotiations

 

Hochstein landed in Beirut on Monday and met on Tuesday with President Michel Aoun and other senior government officials and parliamentarians as part of the indirect negotiations to demarcate the maritime border.

 

President Aoun received Hochstein in the presence of the US Ambassador to Beirut Dorothy Shea, and Aoun informed Hochstein of Lebanon's official position regarding the demarcation of the maritime borders and stressed Lebanon's sovereign rights to water and natural resources.

 

Al Mayadeen Arabic correspondent, citing information obtained, pointed out that Lebanon will demand the preservation of the entire Qana field, and thus adherence to all oil wealth, even beyond the line 23, rejecting the line previously drawn up by Hochstein in February, whereby he cut off parts of Block no. 8.

 

The correspondent stated that Aoun "responded orally to Hochstein's previous offer and presented a new proposal," adding that Aoun "requested prompt answers through Hochstein from the other side, i.e. Tel Aviv."

 

Indirect talks between Lebanon and "Israel" fizzled out in 2021 after Lebanon pushed its claim in the disputed zone from a boundary known as "Line 23" further south to "Line 29", adding around 1,400 square km (540 square miles) to its maritime borders, including part of Karish.

 

To overcome the impasse, according to media reports, Hochstein proposed a field swap that would create an S-shaped boundary instead of a straight line, but Lebanon did not officially agree to the proposal.

 

Two unnamed official sources told Reuters on June 14 that President Aoun would demand from the US energy envoy that indirect talks resume as soon as possible and that "Israel" stop all works at Karish until negotiations are concluded, the two officials said.

 

Asked if Hochstein's visit to Beirut can relaunch indirect maritime border negotiations, Abi-Khalil said it is up to Hoshstein's proposals.

 

"Re-launching the negotiations is related to the proposals that will be presented by the American envoy, which must take into account the Lebanese interest," said Abi-Khalil.

 

"Views united on the decision taken by His Excellency the President of the Republic, which strengthens the Lebanese position," she added.

 

Previous talks stalled after Lebanon said that the map used by the United Nations in the talks required modification. It is not clear yet if Lebanon can resume talks now without the map being modified.

 

"We can say that the visit of the American envoy to Beirut today means the resumption of negotiations, especially if the United States does not want an escalation in the region," Abi-Khalil told Al Mayadeen English. "[Indirect] Negotiations are a necessity at this stage."

Western Intelligence Agencies Stole 97 Billion Global Internet Data in Just 30 Days

 

Western intelligence agencies are once again acting illegally, stealing data around the world and violating the sovereignty of the countries.

 

In a recent report revealed by the Chinese media, details of the data capture power of the so-called “Five Eyes”, the data sharing network of the secret services of the five Anglophone powers, were shown. In just a month, billions of data were stolen, and phone calls violated, creating a scenario of insecurity of privacy around the planet.

 

The report comes from a cybersecurity agency called Anzer, which gave information to the Chinese newspaper Global Times last Monday, June 13th.

 

In all, 97 billion global internet data were stolen, in addition to 124 billion phone records infringed in the last thirty days alone. The main agencies reported by Anzer are US intelligence organizations, but there is also involvement of all agents participating in the scope of the “Five Eyes”, which brings together the secret services of the US, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand.

 

According to Anzer’s agents, such clandestine operations – called “black hand operations” – are mostly carried out by Tailored Access Operations (TAO), which is the cyber warfare agency that directly serves the US National Security Agency (NSA).

 

The report says that recently increasingly powerful cyber weapons have been used in data theft operations, being capable of indiscriminately capturing information from billions of internet users around the world simultaneously.

 

An anonymous expert quoted by Global Times commented on the topic saying:

 

“The NSA’s global indiscriminate intrusion has long been supported by a vast and sophisticated network of weapons platforms, of which TAO is an important weapon maker. Some of these weapons are dedicated to the products of US internet giants such as Apple, Cisco and Dell, and have been developed with the support and full participation of these internet giants (…) The US is taking highly engineered cyber weapons as the winning advantage in future cyber warfare, and is investing resources and increasing chips regardless of cost, bringing endless hidden dangers to global cyber security”.

 

One of the main advanced cyber espionage instruments used by the NSA/TAO to maintain this type of massive data theft strategy is the so-called NOPEN. Such a weapon had already been denounced by the Global Times, in May, and consists of a mechanism capable of accessing various types of confidential information on any equipment using the Unix/Linux system. Indeed, the weapon is used not only to steal secret files, but also to redirect network communication and view information on other computers connected to the assaulted one.

Internet Explorer gravestone goes viral in South Korea

 

Jung Ki-young, a South Korean software engineer, believes that Microsoft Corp's decision to retire the Internet Explorer web browser marked the end of a quarter-century of a love-hate relationship with technology. This is when he decided to commemorate the browser's demise by spending a month and 430,000 won ($330) to design and order a headstone with the browser's "e" logo above the epitaph: "He was a good tool to download other browsers."

 

The tombstone's photo went viral after a memorial that took place at a cafe run by his brother in the southern city of Gyeongju.

 

On Wednesday, Microsoft cut back support for Internet Explorer after a 27-year run, to focus on Microsoft Edge, its faster browser.

 

Jung commented on the memorial by saying it expressed his mixed feelings for the older software, mainly since it played such a big part in his career.

 

"It was a pain in the ass, but I would call it a love-hate relationship because Explorer itself once dominated an era," he told Reuters.

 

He said it took him longer to make sure his sites and online apps worked with Explorer than with other browsers.

 

His clients, he added, kept asking him to make sure their websites looked good in Explorer, which remained for years the default browser in South Korea's government offices and many banks.

 

World's leading browser for more than decade

 

Explorer became the world's main browser for more than a decade after it was launched in 1995; it was bundled with the operating system of Microsoft's Windows and was pre-installed in billions of computers.

 

In the late 2000s, it started losing out to Google Chrome and became the topic of countless internet memes, with some developers suggesting it was sluggish compared with its rivals.

 

Jung's purpose for the gravestone was to give people a laugh, as he said, but was not expecting the joke would go that far.

 

"That's another reason for me to thank the Explorer, it has now allowed me to make a world-class joke," he said.

 

"I regret that it's gone, but won't miss it. So its retirement, to me, is a good death."

Photoimmunotherapy is destined to become the world’s fifth major cancer treatment after surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy. The breakthrough could enable surgeons to be more effective in surgery by lighting up cancer cells.

 

A European team of UK, Polish, and Swiss engineers, physicists, neurosurgeons, biologists, and immunologists joined forces to design the new form of photoimmunotherapy.

 

The light-activated therapy forces cancer cells to glow in the dark, helping surgeons extract more tumors relative to existing techniques. The technique was tried on mice that are suffering from one of the most common and difficult brain tumors to deal with, glioblastoma. The scans revealed that the new treatment exposed the tiniest cancer cells as it lit them up to assist surgeons in the extraction of the cancer cells and then wiped out whatever tiny leftovers.

 

Moreover, the Institute of Cancer Research in London led trials of the new form of photoimmunotherapy and results showed that the treatment could prime the immune system, preventing glioblastoma from reemerging after the surgery. With this in mind, scientists are now also looking into studying the new treatment in the context of a new treatment for children’s cancer, neuroblastoma.

 

“Brain cancers like glioblastoma can be hard to treat and, sadly, there are too few treatment options for patients,” the study leader, Dr. Gabriela Kramer-Marek, told the Guardian. “Surgery is challenging due to the location of the tumors, and so new ways to see tumor cells to be removed during surgery, and to treat residual cancer cells that remain afterward, could be of great benefit.”

The Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA) harboured a now-notorious paedophile in its ranks for 29 years between 1979 and 2007, the organisation has confirmed.

 

Roy Wenlock, for whom the WACA created the full-time role of 'development officer' in 1979, was one of three sex offenders investigated in WA Supreme Court Justice Peter Blaxell's 452-page parliamentary inquiry into historical child sexual abuse at Anglican hostels, published in 2012.

 

WACA chief executive Christina Matthews confirmed to ABC Sport that the organisation became aware of Wenlock's offending during the 2012-13 summer and has since taken a range of measures to address the issue, which is the subject of ongoing civil litigation against the WACA.

 

In Justice Blaxell's report, Wenlock, who died in 2007, was revealed to have been a prolific abuser who gained sexual gratification from "wrestling" sessions — simulated sex in which Wenlock would ejaculate — with boys placed in his care between 1963 and 1977. In some cases, Wenlock's offending escalated to masturbation and oral sex with the boys.

 

Blaxell's report was also unequivocal in its conclusion that Wenlock's grooming and abuse of boys continued at the WACA.

 

One of those boys, now a man in his mid-40s, confirmed to ABC Sport that while performing WACA "drinks boy" duties under Wenlock's direction in the late 1980s, he was taken back to Wenlock's house with other boys and witnessed abuse.

 

Between 1979 and 2007, Wenlock fulfilled a range of roles at the WACA, most of which gave him unsupervised access to children.

For decades, he was the organisation's full-time development officer, conducting junior coaching clinics around the state, and also served as WACA ground announcer, museum curator, and as a WACA pennant umpire. He also umpired in junior competitions and was secretary of the Western Australian Youth Cricket Council.

 

In 2000, Wenlock received the Australian Sports Medal for services to cricket.

'Whatever you do, don't go to his house'

 

In 2012, Justice Blaxell concluded there was "ample evidence to show that Wenlock would engage in grooming behaviour" with boys he encountered across his four decades at the WACA.

 

"In this position he was required to engage in various cricketing activities with young teenagers, and he would sometimes invite individual boys back to his home," Blaxell wrote.

Corruption watchdog releases report on lobbying of the Queensland government

 

A report by Queensland's Crime and Corruption Commission suggests the risk of corruption had "intensified" inside the state government, amid a surge in lobbying.

 

It found a small number of key groups and individuals appeared to have a "disproportionate amount of access" to the government and could be using those relationships to "influence government decision."

 

"In some instances, the individuals or groups afforded access have long-standing and close political or personal connections with the decision-makers or government they are seeking to influence," the report, published on Friday, said.

 

"Further, in some circumstances these individuals have been engaged by a political party or government agency while still involved in influencing practices, such as lobbying."

 

Meanwhile, the report, Influencing Practices in Queensland, also found there had been "a substantial increase" in lobbying activities in the state.

 

"The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and associated economic recovery efforts, appear to have contributed to the recent surge in lobbying activities in Queensland," the report said.

Amos Yadlin, the head of the Israeli Institute for National Security Studies, spoke out on Saturday regarding a number of concerning fronts in the confrontation against Iran and Hezbollah.

 

In an interview with Channel 12, Yadlin said there was some confusion in "Israel" vis-à-vis the Iranian nuclear program, saying that the confrontation that should worry us is on a number of fronts.

 

The first front, according to Yadlin, concerns Iran's ability to enrich uranium up to 60%, pointing out that "Israel" is currently in a situation wherein it doesn't know which way Tehran will go.

 

Yadlin wondered whether "Israel" should support a return to the deal that will bring Iran back on the nuclear level but will give them a lot of money, or support a break from the deal, which is "Israel's" formal policy. But then "what would we do if Iran enriches up to 90% or withdraws from the NPT?"

 

Al Monitor had published an article by Israeli commentator Ben Caspit, discussing the division in the Israeli leadership regarding the Iranian nuclear deal, clarifying that the Israeli leadership cannot reach a consensus on whether or not the JCPOA's revival is beneficial for them.

 

Yadlin also added that the second disconcerting front, which was not given enough attention in "Israel" is Hezbollah's precision missiles, while the third front is Syria.

According to Urban Utilities, the Sunshine State's largest water provider, 19,500 houses in lower southeast Queensland had their water connection turned on.

 

However, it was discovered that there were no one living in those homes for many months.

 

Unitywater executive manager customer and community Katherine Gee said their numbers showed 2,104 houses had used 1,000 litres or less water over a 90-day period.

 

Ms Gee added: 'It is important to note that it cannot be categorically stated that these properties are 'vacant'.

 

'We operate in a desirable region and some of these properties may be holiday homes or homes that are occupied for only parts of the year.'

A Hawaii teacher shared child porn with a fellow teacher and bragged about having sex with a 13-year-old boy during school lunch breaks, according to federal prosecutors.

 

Alden Bunag was arrested on Wednesday by FBI agents at an Oahu high school – where he worked as a summer school teacher, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported. Honolulu FBI agents also executed a search warrant at Bunag's home.

 

Bunag was charged with distributing child pornography.

 

The Hawaii public school teacher reportedly sent more than 3,300 messages to another teacher in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Included in the messages were photos and videos of child porn, according to federal court documents. The teacher in Philadelphia was arrested in October.

 

KHON-TV reported, "The documents added that 'Bunag claimed to have sex with (the boy) at the school during lunch breaks… Described (the boy) as a former student and knew that he was a minor at the time.'"

 

Court records said that Bunag confessed to law enforcement that he recorded his sexual encounters with the 13-year-old boy – who was a former student – and sent the videos to others through the Telegram messenger app.

More than 260,000 Aussie car owners could score a major payout from car giant Toyota, with the largest class action in Australia underway.

 

Ken Williams will never forget the “horrendous” moment his car suddenly began belching smoke at a set of traffic lights – leaving his young children fearing the vehicle was on fire.

 

The Queenslander had purchased a new Toyota Prado in 2016 – but within eight or nine months, problems started to emerge with the vehicle emitting worrying levels of foul-smelling white smoke.

 

The concerned dad took the Prado back to the dealership to rectify the issue, and was told there was a quick fix – but to this day, the problems remain, despite Mr Williams returning to the dealership up to 12 times as he desperately tried to find a solution.

 

He told news.com.au he could still remember the look of fear on his kids’ faces when the smoke began billowing as his family sat in traffic.

 

“It was pretty scary – all of the kids were in the back and I remember the look on their faces, because they thought the car was on fire,” he said.

 

“We didn’t know what was going on and it was horrendous – it’s still stuck in my mind to this day.”

 

In 2019, Australian law firm Gilbert + Tobin brought a class action against Toyota on behalf of people who owned a Prado, HiLux or Fortuner in the years 2015 to 2020.

 

The cars in question were defective, owing to faulty diesel particulate filters, and caused financial loss to the vehicle owners.

 

The Federal Court ruled against Toyota in a landmark judgment in April, awarding Mr Williams – the lead applicant – more than $18,000 in damages.

 

But it’s just the tip of the iceberg for Toyota, with the company now facing what could become the largest ever class action payout in Australia, with more than 260,000 vehicle owners potentially entitled to damages totalling more than $2 billion.

 

Toyota has already lodged an appeal in the Federal Court of Australia, challenging the “factual and legal basis for the award of damages.”

 

From Monday, Gilbert + Tobin will start sending out court-approved notices to the hundreds of thousands of eligible vehicle owners across the nation, urging them to register their details.

 

With families across the country now feeling the pinch as cost of living pressures start to bite, it could mean a very welcome payday for eligible Toyota owners, who stand to pocket the approximate reduction in value of each vehicle at the time it was sold, which is 17.5 per cent of the average retail price, plus an additional 10 per cent for excess GST.

 

For a person who paid $60,000 for their vehicle, that equates to at least $10,500, with up to $14,000 per vehicle on the table.

Actually not true for some browsers, because not all browsers leak.

In theory those trials could have been great and they would have made sense, but the ones behind all the evil acts were not caught or punished after all.

Only a few pawns were, and I even doubt they were actually executed, but maybe they were, idk.
