It used to take decades of research to trace your family tree. But now thanks to Internet search sites, we know now Al Sharpton's family were slaves owned by Strom Thurmond's family. Barack Obama and Dick Cheney are cousins and so - apparently - are Hillary Clinton and Madonna!

 

Sites like Ancestry.com have helped find possible connections between your own family roots and some celebrities.

 

To trace the roots of Mayor Adrian Fenty, former Mayor Marion Barry, Justin Timberlake and Beyonce Knowles, ABC 7/NewsChannel 8 started our project armed with same basic information. ABC 7/NewsChannel 8 found on the Internet about each person, including dates and locations of their births and their parents' names. Then we went to Ancestry.com and used their search engine.

 

In fact, the site may have helped link D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty to pop-star Rihanna. Mayor Fenty learned of the possible connection after his father Phil found the ship manifest showing the Mayor's great-grandfather's immigration from Barbados and Panama in 1923 to New York's Ellis Island.

 

Meanwhile, a search of Beyonce Knowles uncovered her Presidential connections. Beyonce has the same 9th great-grandfather, Hans Heinrich Hirtzel, born in Switzerland in 1619, as President George W. Bush making them tenth cousins once removed and tenth cousins with Former President George H.W. Bush.

 

President Bush is also related to another pop-superstar, Justin Timberlake. They are 9th cousins once removed.

 

Timberlake is also related to President Richard Nixon, Elvis Presley, Marlon Brando and Mae West. Plus he's related to some of Virgina's earliest settlers, like Carter Braxton and Francis Lightfoot Lee.

 

As Mayor Fenty's father Phil noted, we're all related. It just turns out that some of us are more closely related then we ever guessed.
