Democrat Louisiana Judge Blocks State Trigger Law Banning Abortion

A Democrat judge has temporarily blocked Louisiana’s trigger law banning abortion from going into effect.

Judge Robin Giarrusso of the Orleans Parish Civil District Court issued an order temporarily halting the law after abortion providers in the state filed a lawsuit.

The law was written so that if Roe v. Wade was overturned, virtually all abortions in the state would be immediately banned, unless the mother is at risk of death or permanent injury.

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry tweeted on Friday that “Louisiana’s trigger law banning #abortion is now in effect.”

Abortion providers represented by Center for Reproductive Rights argued that “the abortion restrictions violate providers’ due process rights and ‘lack constitutionally required safeguards to prevent arbitrary enforcement,'” according to a report from Fox News.

They also claimed the laws were vague and did not set a specific start time for the law to be applied.

The judge will hold a hearing on the case July 8 and determine if the law will remain blocked.

“A public health emergency is about to engulf the nation. As expected, Louisiana and many other states wasted no time enacting bans and eliminating abortion entirely,” Nancy Northup, president and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, said in a statement obtained by Axios.

“People who need an abortion right now are in a state of panic. We will be fighting to restore access in Louisiana and other states for as long as we can. Every day that a clinic is open and providing abortion services can make a difference in a person’s life,” Northup continued.

AG Landry has vowed to keep fighting.

For now, abortions will remain legal in the state.

January 6th Committee Announces Surprise Hearing for Tuesday: “Recently Obtained Evidence…Witness Testimony”

The Pelosi-controlled House January 6th Committee investigating the Capitol riot and efforts by President Trump to stop the steal of the 2020 presidential election suddenly announced a hearing scheduled for Tuesday at 1 p.m. EDT “to present recently obtained evidence and receive witness testimony.”

The surprise hearing comes after Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) said last week there would be no more hearings until after the long July 4th recess. The committee had previously put off two hearings set for this week. No further details on the hearing were released.

Tuesday’s hearing will be the sixth the committee has held.

NBC News reporter Gary Grumbach observed the committee has been knocked out of the news cycle by recent events, “They were knocked out of the news cycle by the signing of gun legislation and the overturning of Roe v. Wade, but the Jan. 6th committee is back – they will hold a hearing tomorrow “to present recently obtained evidence and receive witness testimony.”

Last Thursday’s hearing focused on former Trump Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark. By sheer coincidence the FBI staged a dawn raid on Clark’s home the day before, seizing his electronic devices while forcing him to wait outside his home in his pajamas.

Biden administration drops tens of thousands of illegal immigration cases in 'de facto amnesty'

President Joe Biden's administration is forcing federal prosecutors to drop tens of thousands of cases against illegal immigrants, creating a sort of "de facto amnesty" that could permit up to 1 million people to seek permanent legal status in the U.S. by 2024, according to a report.

A whistleblower from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement — a federal prosecutor — told the Washington Examiner Friday that Biden administration officials have instructed ICE prosecutors to deal with a backlog of 2 million immigration cases by throwing out cases from before the November 2020 election.

In an April 14 virtual meeting, ICE principal legal adviser Kerry Doyle laid out the Biden administration's policy to the more than 1,200 ICE prosecutors handling cases against illegal immigrants, the Examiner reported. She told them only to prosecute cases against migrants identified as national security or public safety threats, or those who had crossed the border illegally after Nov. 1, 2020. Doyle instructed that prosecutors were to use their discretion to drop all other cases.

"As the memo explains — I think pretty clearly — we've put our thumb sort of heavily in favor of dismissal and durable solutions," Doyle reportedly said. "Even if you’ve spent a lot of time on the case, if it's a nonpriority, you should be moving to offer [prosecutorial discretion] in that case."

Essentially, the Biden administration is selectively enforcing immigration law. The result is that since April 25, between 60,000 and 80,000 illegal immigration cases have been closed, the ICE prosecutor told the Examiner.

"If the agency's 1,200 prosecutors keep the current pace of 60,000-80,000 case closures every two months, ICE could hit 360,000 to 480,000 closed cases by next April and 1 million by early summer 2024, months before the presidential election," the Examiner reported.

Without a pending immigration case against them, these illegal immigrants will be able to apply to become permanent legal residents, the first step toward U.S. citizenship.

"This is a de facto amnesty," the whistleblower said.

Commission of Inquiry hears little done to stop paedophile James Geoffrey Griffin despite report of child abuse material on laptop

A person who bought a laptop from Launceston nurse James Geoffrey Griffin found child exploitation material on it and told police almost two decades before Griffin was finally charged over child sexual abuse, Tasmania's Commission of Inquiry has heard.

In 2001, the buyer of James Griffin's laptop told police "I do not want to think he is working in a kids ward in Tasmania unsupervised, given what I have found"

Griffin had already started at the Launceston General Hospital a month earlier, and in September 2001 moved to the paediatric ward

The inquiry into the Tasmanian Government's responses into child sexual abuse is holding hearings in Launceston for two weeks, focusing on the health system and the Launceston General Hospital (LGH), where Griffin worked as a nurse on the children's ward.

In her opening address, counsel assisting the commission Elizabeth Bennett SC told the hearing that the case of James Griffin was one of "notoriety, rumour and fear", and that he had had contact with children through his work as a nurse, a volunteer ambulance officer, netball volunteer, on the Spirit of Tasmania and at the Ashley Youth Detention Centre.

"We acknowledge that some people have chosen not to speak to the commission and we respect their decision and acknowledge that parts of the story may remain untold."

Ms Bennett told the commission that Griffin sold his laptop to someone in the late 1990s, who then connected it to the internet in 2000 and found child exploitation material and links to child pornography websites.

She said that person made a complaint to Tasmania Police in September 2000, but counsel had been "unable to determine the outcome of that complaint".

Two countries apply to join BRICS

Iran and Argentina see potential in Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa bloc

The Islamic Republic of Iran has officially submitted its application to join the group of five emerging economies made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, the foreign ministry in Tehran announced on Monday. The move comes after the Iranian president addressed the BRICS summit last week.

While BRICS is not a treaty bloc, it has a “very creative mechanism with broad aspects,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Monday, according to the Tasnim news agency. He added that Tehran has already had “a series of consultations” with BRICS about the application.

Iran’s membership would “add value” for everyone involved, said Khatibzadeh, noting that BRICS members account for up to 30% of the world’s GDP and 40% of the global population.

On Friday, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi addressed the BRICS virtual summit hosted by China, and expressed Tehran’s readiness to share its capabilities and potentials with the group.

Argentina has also applied to join BRICS. President Alberto Fernandez on Friday urged the creation of cooperation mechanisms that could represent the alternative to ostensibly private institutions run by – and in the interest of – the West.

During the session on Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the five-member group was working on setting up a new global reserve currency “based on a basket of currencies of our countries.”

Zelensky claims Russia hit shopping mall

Kiev says the incoming Russian missiles set fire to a shopping center in Kremenchug in central Ukraine

A shopping center in the central Ukrainian city of Kremenchug caught fire after what the government said was a Russian missile strike on Monday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said “over a thousand civilians” were inside the mall. The regional governor later reported 10 people were killed and around 40 were injured. Russia denies targeting civilians in its offensive in Ukraine.

“The occupiers fired rockets at the mall, where there were more than a thousand civilians,” Zelensky announced on Monday afternoon. “The mall is on fire, rescuers are fighting the fire, the number of victims is impossible to imagine.”

He said the shopping center posed “no danger” and had “no strategic value” to the Russian military.

Preliminary reports from Ukrainian emergency services said two people were killed and at least 20 injured at the Amstor shopping center in Kremenchug in Poltava Region, after a blaze broke out “as a result of rocket fire” in the afternoon. Twenty vehicles and over 115 firefighters have been deployed to contain the blaze.

Poltava regional governor Dmitry Lunin later said that there were 10 dead and more than 40 wounded.

Videos from the scene showed dozens of men – many in military uniforms – running in the mostly empty parking lot outside the burning building, as black smoke rose into the sky.

The Russian military has not commented on this particular incident so far. Multiple social media users have pointed out, however, that a factory for production and repair of heavy machinery – Kredmash – was located right on the other side of the shopping center. Also nearby was a railway junction, often a target of Russian missile strikes.

Previous local reporting also indicated that Kredmash had been involved in repairing and refurbishing military armored vehicles.

Moscow has maintained that the Russian military takes great pains to avoid civilian casualties and targets only the military and logistics assets of the Kiev government with high-precision weapons.

On Sunday, the Ukrainian government claimed that a Russian missile had struck a residential building in Kiev, killing one person and injuring four. The military in Kiev also said it had shot down two out of the six incoming Russian missiles.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, however, four precision missiles were aimed at the Artyom rocket plant in Kiev, which produced ammunition for Ukrainian artillery. No civilian infrastructure was damaged in the process.

Two Ukrainian S-300 air defense missiles that went up to intercept the Russian rockets were shot down by friendly fire from Ukrainian Buk 1M systems. The debris of one of them struck the residential building and caused the civilian casualties, said Russian Defense Ministry spokesman General Igor Konashenkov.

Recently, a local Republican decided to run in the primary race against Matt Gaetz.
