Police say attackers used rifles and a 9mm pistol

At least 19 people were killed, and eight others were injured in a pair of shootings at two separate bars in South Africa late Saturday night.

The incidents come roughly two weeks after 22 teens were found dead inside another bar in the coastal town of East London. The teens showed no outward signs of injury, however, and authorities turned to a toxicology lab to determine their cause of death.

Initial reports suggested the teens may have died in a stampede, but that was later ruled out. Authorities have yet to release results from the toxicology lab.

The deceased include at least nine girls and 12 boys. Police discovered at least 17 of the teens dead when they arrived at the nightclub at roughly 4 a.m. on June 26, while five others later died at the hospital or on the way to the hospital.

France prepares for total cutoff of Russian gas

The French government is preparing for a total cutoff of Russian gas supplies, which it sees as the most likely scenario in its forward planning, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said on Sunday.

With about 17 per cent of its supply coming from Russia, France is less dependent on Russian gas than some of its neighbours, but the government has been preparing contingency plans.

A cutoff is particularly problematic now because France’s nuclear power generation would struggle to pick up the slack as many reactors are currently down for maintenance.

Billionaire philanthropist and socialite Lily Safra dead at 87

The cause of death for the Brazilian-born New York socialite, 87, who owned sprawling homes around the world, including a $600 million estate in the South of France, was not reported. She is scheduled to be buried Monday in a family plot in Geneva.

Lily Safra is the widow of banker Edmond Safra, her fourth husband, who died in a mysterious fire at his penthouse in Monaco in 1999.

Edmond Safra, the scion of a storied Lebanese banking family, owned the Trade Development Bank and New York’s Republic National Bank, which was sold to HSBC shortly before his death. At the time, Lily Safra inherited more than $4 billion.

Before she married Edmond, Lily was married to an Argentine businessman and Brazilian appliance magnate Alfredo Monteverde, who died in a suicide in Rio de Janeiro in 1969, shooting himself twice in the chest.
