Judge Janet DiFiore, after more than six years on the court, and whose legacy includes a sweeping opinion on gerrymandering, will leave her post at the end of August.

Janet DiFiore, the chief judge of the New York Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court, says she will step down at the end of August, even as lawmakers in Albany continue to codify and consider stronger laws on guns and abortion, measures at the heart of a national debate and whose legality could be determined by the state judiciary.

Tazewell County State’s Attorney submits unconditional resignation

TAZEWELL COUNTY (Heart of Illinois ABC) - Tazewell County State’s Attorney Stewart Umholtz has submitted his unconditional resignation from his post - effective November 30.

Umholtz says he is doing this to allow a candidate to be slated for the state’s attorney’s office in the general election on November 8.

An unconditional resignation, effective at future date, may not be withdrawn after it is received by the officer authorized to fill the vacancy, according to state statute cited by Tazewell County Clerk John Ackerman in a release. The resigning office holder may continue to hold such office until the date or event specified, but no later than the date at which the successor is elected and qualified.

Umholtz has served in the position since 1995

He has recommended chief assistant Kevin Johnson be selected to serve in the post.
