Putin expands simplified Russian citizenship acquisition on all residents of Ukraine

The previous version of the decree only covered residents of DPR, LPR and Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions of Ukraine

The option to obtain Russian citizenship via simplified procedure has been expanded to cover all residents of Ukraine, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decree published Monday.

"Declare that citizens of Ukraine, Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) or Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR) and people without citizenship permanently living in DPR, LPR or Ukraine […] are entitled to appeal for admission to citizenship of the Russian Federation via simplified procedure in accordance with the […] law ‘On citizenship of the Russian Federation," the decree says.

The previous version of the decree only covered residents of DPR, LPR and Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions of Ukraine.

Meanwhile, service in armed forces or law enforcement of Donbass republics will not be an obstruction for acquisition of Russian citizenship, the decree says.

"Military service, service in national security or law enforcement agencies of Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republic cannot be considered an reason for denying Russian citizenship," the document said.

Under Russian legislation, the simplified procedure makes it possible to apply for Russian citizenship without fulfilling a number of preconditions, such as living in Russia for five years, have a source of income and undergoing a Russian language examination.

The simplified procedure has been introduced for DPR and LPR residents by Putin’s decree in 2019 (back then, the republics were still considered parts of Ukraine). The decree said it was signed "in order to protect the rights and freedoms of a man and a citizen, under universally recognized principles and norms of international law." In late May this year, the decree was expanded to cover Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions of Ukraine.

The latest subvariant of the novel coronavirus to become dominant in Europe, the United States, and other places is also, in many ways, the worst so far.

Major US Christian denomination declares Israel an apartheid state

One of the largest mainline protestant denominations in the U.S. has voted to declare Israel an apartheid state, becoming the first major American Christian denomination to do so.

The governing body of the Presbyterian Church USA on Friday passed a resolution that said the laws, policies, and practices of the Israeli government toward Arabs living in the region known as Palestine "fulfill the international legal definition of apartheid."

Delegates to the church's biannual General Assembly, which took place in Louisville, Kentucky, and online, voted 266-116 to adopt the resolution. The church government — which oversees 1.19 million members — also voted to designate a Nakba Remembrance Day on its calendar — the Palestinian commemoration of Israeli independence in 1948, which Palestinians regard as the destruction of Palestinian society.

The resolution accuses Israel of "establishing two sets of laws, one for Israelis and one for Palestinians, which give preferential treatment to Israeli Jews and oppressive treatment to Palestinians." It also repeats accusations that Israel expropriated Palestinian land for Jewish-only settlements and that the country has forced Palestinians into "separate reserves and ghettos."

Palestinian activists celebrated the vote. "This is an excellent stand by the US Presbyterian Church declaring Israel Apartheid State," said Atef Dalgamouni, one of the "founding fathers" of the Al Jazeera news network.

But some Christian and Jewish leaders condemned the General Assembly's declaration. Rabbi Eric J. Greenberg, director of United Nations Relations and Strategic Partnerships for the Simon Wiesenthal Center, said the resolution was "an insult to Jews and Christians alike which damages interfaith relations."

"PCUSA leadership has violated G-d's commandment not to bear false witness, rendered itself irrelevant in the world of peacemaking, and made a mockery of honest dialogue and interfaith relations," Greenberg said after the vote, according to CBN News.

Jonathan Greenblatt, president of the Anti-Defamation League, also criticized the resolution.

"This resolution does not seek to heal or resolve, but rather deepens divides between people of different faiths and hinders the peace process," Greenblatt said. "We encourage the #PCUSA to use its influence in a way that constructively contributes towards a peaceful future for all."

Drugmaker Asks US Regulators for Approval of Over-the-Counter Birth Control Pill

A drugmaker has asked U.S. regulators for approval for an over-the-counter birth control pill.

The pill would be the first one available in the United States over-the-counter (OTC) if the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves the application from HRA Pharma.

The progestin-only daily pill could be obtained without a prescription if approval goes through.

“This historic application marks a groundbreaking moment in contraceptive access and reproductive equity in the U.S.,” Frederique Welgryn, chief strategic operations and innovation officer at HRA Pharma, said in a statement. “More than 60 years ago, prescription birth control pills in the U.S. empowered women to plan if and when they want to get pregnant. Moving a safe and effective prescription birth control pill to OTC will help even more women and people access contraception without facing unnecessary barriers.”

Many birth control pills contain both estrogen and progestin. But estrogen increases the risk of serious blood clots, leading more companies to develop pills with only progestin, a synthetic form of a hormone that works by preventing the release of eggs, according to the National Library of Medicine.

A number of large medical groups, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, have in recent years called for regulators to allow access to birth control pills without a prescription.

The college in 2019 also said that access should not be restricted due to age.

The pill from HRA Pharma, Opill, has been used as a prescribed form of birth control for nearly 50 years after being approved by the FDA in 1973.

Perrigo, which bought HRA Pharma for about $2 billion in 2021, said that removing the prescription requirement for Opill “would improve access to a contraceptive method that is well tolerated and notably more effective at preventing pregnancy than all current methods available OTC.”

The move comes weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade, giving states the power to regulate abortion without running afoul of the earlier Supreme Court ruling.

That’s triggered efforts from Democrats and health care groups to widen access to both birth control and abortion medications.

In advance of the decision—but after a draft of the ruling was leaked and published—Sens. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and other Democrats introduced a bill that states the FDA should approve an application for an OTC birth control “without delay” if it is determined safe and efficacious. The bill also seeks to make sure women will be able to easily get a pill if one is approved.

“All Americans should have access to comprehensive, affordable health care, including over-the-counter birth control,” Kaine said at the time. “I’m proud to support this critical legislation that will empower women to make decisions that are best for their health, economic security, and future family planning.”

New York City launched its newest PSA on Monday with a focus on preparing for a possible a nuclear attack.

The short public service announcement identifies three steps New Yorkers can take "as the threat landscape continues to evolve."

In the event of a nuclear incident, the PSA advises the following actions:

-Get inside: Move indoors and away from any windows.

"If you were outside after the blast, get clean immediately. Remove and bag all outer clothing, to keep radioactive dust or ash away from your body," the PSA advices.

New Yorkers are encouraged to sign up for Notify NYC, the city's official emergency communications program, and receive free emergency alerts by visiting NYC.gov/notifynyc or by calling 311.

As it turns out, we’ve been bamboozled yet again by an agency that keeps rewriting the rules on the fly. Toby Rogers, Ph.D. — a political economist whose research focus is on regulatory capture and Big Pharma corruption6 — explains how they sneaked this one by us:7

“Yesterday [June 28], the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee approved a bivalent COVID-19 shot with the Wuhan strain and the Omicron variant …

At the meeting, the manufacturers (Moderna, Pfizer, and Novavax) were asked what their production timelines are… and they said out loud, ‘So long as we don’t have to provide any clinical data, we’ll have them ready by fall.’ No one had a problem with that …

Wait, hold up, I thought the FDA was voting on the Future Framework yesterday? The policy question was whether reformulated COVID-19 shots would be treated as new molecular entities (which they are) in which case they should be subject to formal review or whether reformulated shots would be treated as ‘biologically similar’ to existing Covid-19 shots and be allowed to skip clinical trials altogether.

Apparently the FDA did not have the votes to just pass this as a policy question. If you ask anyone whether reformulated mRNA represents a new molecular entity, well of course it is, so that would require formal regulatory review.

What the FDA did instead was to smuggle the policy question in disguised as a vote about reformulated ‘boosters’ for the fall.

In essence, the FDA just started doing the Future Framework (picking variants willy nilly, skipping clinical trials) and essentially dared the committee members to turn down a booster dose — knowing that all of the VRBPAC members are hand-picked because they’ve never met a vaccine they did not like.

So of course only two people on the committee had the courage to turn down a booster dose — even though it was based on this preposterous process (that was never formally adopted) where there was literally no data at all … By stealth, the FDA replaced a system based on evidence with a system based entirely on belief.”

Worst Idea in the History of Public Health

A decision to release reformulated mRNA shots without additional clinical trials is the worst development yet, by far, and has the power to radically change medical science moving forward.

Not only will completely untested COVID injections be churned out, but this “framework” may also, over time, be widened to include other vaccines and drugs that drug makers may want to tinker with. Heck, it could even lower standards for drug trials in general, which historically have required at least 10 years of multi-phase testing.8

In a May 31, 2022, Substack article, Rogers explained the origin and purpose of this incredibly dangerous proposal:9

“Pfizer and Moderna have a problem — their mRNA COVID-19 shots do not stop infection, transmission, hospitalization, nor death from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Everyone knows this … Pfizer and Moderna are making about $50 billion a year on these shots and they want that to continue.

So they need to reformulate the shots. Maybe target a new variant, maybe change some of the ingredients — who knows, these shots don’t work so it’s not clear what it will take to get them to work. This is a problem because reformulated shots mean new clinical trials and new regulatory review by the FDA.

There is a decent chance that any reformulated shot might fail a new clinical trial and the public is deeply skeptical of these shots so the scrutiny would be intense.

As of Tuesday, a gallon of regular gasoline at a Costco gas station cost $4.55, which is about 25 cents less than the statewide average for unleaded.

I am in California. During the last primary election I took my mail in ballot in to the actual polling place and had a rather interesting conversation with a poll worker.

After finding the right table I showed my driver's license, ostensibly to make it easier for them to get the spelling of my name right when looking it up. While waiting for them to find me in the printout I offered my blank mail in ballot and said that it was my understanding I was supposed to turn it in to vote there. At this point another, I assume senior, poll worker came up and said that I could just fill out the mail in ballot and put it into a specific box in the middle of the room, after signing and sealing it etc. This would then be taken to the county offices to be counted. I asked why I couldn't just run it through what I assumed was a machine sitting nearby and was told there weren't any machines on site, just boxes. A closer look showed this to be correct. I was then told that I could turn in the mail in ballot if I wished to but they preferred I didn't as that would require them to call in to the county office to cancel my mail in ballot and issue me a new one. I was under the impression, having inquired several elections previously, that ballots were not tied to a particular person, so I asked if the ballot was marked in some way to identify it specifically and was shown a number along the edge which I was told was unique to that ballot and linked to my name. I then went to one of the carrels and filled out my ballot, signed and sealed the envelope, etc. Saved me a stamp at least.

Anyway TL;DR: In California, at least in Mendocino county, there is a link between you and your ballot.

This implies to me that it is possible they know exactly how you voted that ballot, i.e. ballots are not anonymous.

It also suggests that if they wished to they could tell you exactly how your ballot was counted so you could in theory do an audit of one. Imagine if every voter were to do that.
