Since becoming mayor last year, Roberto Gualtieri has been pushing to build a rubbish incinerator in Rome to save on the €200 million that the city spends annually trucking rubbish as far as Germany for disposal.
“There is currently a long logistics chain for Rome’s rubbish disposal which involves numerous firms in a sector infiltrated by criminal groups. Now that we want to shorten that chain and cut the risk of criminal profiteering, the fires are starting,” Alfonsi said.
