Why is Trudeau appearing in random places for no apparent reason?
The usual explanation for prime ministers showing up in haphazard locations is that they’re pitching some new bill or spending initiative. After the Liberal government unveiled their budget in April, for instance, Trudeau embarked on a series of cross-country stops to tout the budget’s more headline-worthy pledges. On a stop in Edmonton, for instance, Trudeau played up the budget’s promise of small business tax cuts.

But there’s no indication that Trudeau is pitching anything this time around. His office isn’t issuing any press statements to accompany the visits and he’s not making any speeches. None of the venues he’s visited have featured either a lectern or a teleprompter — both of which are ubiquitous tools on any politically motivated visit.
“It is not believed (Trudeau) will be making any significant announcements, with his appearances being described to the media as photo opportunities,” was how the Okanagan visit was described by the Kelowna-based Castanet.
Another explanation for prime ministers showing up in unexpected locations is that they’re attending a fundraiser; some out-of-the-way riding association books a $500-a-plate dinner with the prime minister as the keynote, and his aides use the opportunity to book a few goodwill visits while they’re in the area.

But the prime minister’s office is quite diligent about publishing the details of upcoming fundraisers, and none were scheduled for the Gatineau, Scarborough or Kelowna areas at the time of Trudeau’s respective visits. Trudeau won’t be canvassing for money until Wednesday, when he’s scheduled to attend a fundraiser in Halifax.
There is some speculation that all the random visits are a sign that the prime minister is already in campaign mode for an election he intends to call in the fall. After all, that’s what happened last summer: Trudeau held an impromptu goodwill tour and then called a surprise election on Aug. 15.
