The Reverend T. Anthony Spearman was found dead inside his Guilford County home, according to New Light Missionary Baptist Church's pastor.
Spearman was also a former president of the North Carolina Council of Churches.
He was active in his community for over 50 years, and rallied with college students as a former campus minister to support several causes.
Spearman was an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and a consultant with Faith in Action and Equality NC.
He also advocated strongly for voting rights and serving marginalized communities.
Spearman, who was in his early 70s, had filed a lawsuit recently against several state and national NAACP officials.
The lawsuit accuses NAACP leaders, including the national president and CEO, of defamation and conspiracy to remove him from the presidency.
These claims stemmed from a former employee's allegations of sexual harassment by the Reverend Curtis Gatewood.
Gatewood is another NAACP leader and a rival of Spearman.
