There was a several million year period called the Carboniferous, where swamp forests covered massive areas. The flora that died, fell into the swamp and didn't decay. Time, heat, and pressure cooked the carbon rich "stew" into oil and coal, which release natural gas. These are now the geologic formations we mine and drill for so-called fossil fuels.
