A ferry crashed into the dock at Fauntleroy on Thursday morning, suspending service to the West Seattle terminal.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced Tuesday that it will officially consider migrants' US military service before deciding whether to enforce civil immigration actions, such as deportation, against them or their family members.

 

 

While ICE has previously recognized US military service as a mitigating factor, the Biden administration's directive makes consideration of US military service an official agency policy. The department will take into account the non-citizen US veteran's type of discharge, length of service, and other related factors before deciding to take action against an illegal immigrant and their immediate family members.

 

 

Immigration enforcement actions include "arrest, detention, return, and removal from the United States of foreign nationals who are inadmissible to or removable from the United States under U.S. immigration law," according to the Department of Homeland Security.

 

 

The Biden administration stressed in a press release announcing the policy that the focus of ICE is "the apprehension and removal of noncitizens who are a threat to national security, public safety, and border security."

 

 

The newly official policy will also create training, tracking, and reporting requirements for current and former US service members who are illegal immigrants.

 

 

"ICE values the incredible contributions of noncitizens who have served in the U.S. military," ICE Acting Director Tae D. Johnson said in a press release. "Through this directive, ICE will consider U.S. military service by a noncitizen or their immediate family members when determining whether to take civil immigration enforcement decisions against a noncitizen."

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoed $35 million in government spending for a new practice facility for the Tampa Bay Rays after the baseball team posted a tweet in support of gun control, according to a report.

 

The move comes just weeks after the GOP governor — and rumored 2024 presidential hopeful — stripped Disney of its self-governing status after the Mouse House came out in opposition to a new law banning explicit sex and gender education for young children.

 

ln the most recent skirmish, DeSantis penalized the Tampa franchise after a tweet from the team’s official Twitter account took a swing at the nation’s gun laws following the mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, Texas, according to the news site OutKick.

 

“This cannot become normal. We cannot become numb. We cannot look the other way. We all know, if nothing changes, nothing changes,” the team tweeted.

 

The Rays, who have edged out the Yankees to win the AL East the past two years, were hoping that DeSantis would sign off on funding for the new spring training complex in Odessa, Florida.

 

DeSantis this week signed a $109.9 billion budget for the fiscal year starting on July 1 — but killed the funding for the Rays’ facility.

 

The governor defended his veto of the sports complex at a press briefing Friday.

 

“I don’t support giving taxpayer dollars to professional sports stadiums,” he said. “Companies are free to engage or not engage with whatever discourse they want, but clearly … it’s inappropriate to subsidize political activism of a private corporation.”

 

The horrific May 24 mass shooting at the elementary school in Uvalde, in which 19 students and two teachers were killed by an 18-year-old gunman, has reignited a national debate about gun control.

 

The deadly attack came 10 days after another 18-year-old gunned down 10 people at a Buffalo supermarket.

 

In the aftermath of the Texas shooting, the Rays and the Yankees both agreed to suspend usual game coverage on their Twitter feeds and instead posted information about gun violence.

 

The Rays’ statement that was posted to the team’s Twitter feed began: “We all deserve to be safe — in schools, grocery stores, places of worship, our neighborhoods, houses and America.”

 

“The most recent mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde have shaken us to the core. The Tampa Bay Rays are mourning these heartbreaking tragedies that took the lives of innocent children and adults,” OutKick reported.

 

OutKick is a sports media entity that was recently acquired by the Fox Corporation, whose sister company, News Corp., owns The Post.

Could possibly be used for delaying a vote in the Senate, but that could easily be countered. Happens to Dems and RINOs exclusively, it seems, and they've usually got the votes to spare. Nothing is really close. Even declaring war on Russia today passed the Senate unanimously. Covid takes them out of the public space for a few days, but they always return. Kind of slim pickins at the Homo Depot I just got back from but that is to be expected this time of year. I stockpile seeds and store them on a container in a cool corner of the garage. I basically replenished my green pepper, corn, cabbage and got some beets for this year. The rest are for next year as I am almost complete in planting from last years seed stock.. Got 2 green pepper plants and a few tomatoes to go in later today. Pre grown plant shelves were full.

I fucking love gardening.

In his testimony, David Eby said that the money laundering problem in British Columbia was so notorious that it was known among international intelligence groups as “the Vancouver model”.

In this model, gamblers, usually from China, who do not have cash, take money from gangsters and deposit them into a casino – these are the proceeds of gang crime, often in amounts as high as hundreds of thousands of dollars. The gambler then transfers money from his Chinese bank account to a bank account under the control of the gang. The illicit cash he took from the gangsters is taken into the casino, a FINTRAC reporting form is completed, and the gambler is free to buy chips, gamble, and then, cash out.

A series of media reports in the past few weeks suggested that there was a clear relation between shady transactions, crime proceeds and the skyrocketing housing market around Vancouver and in the Lower Mainland, in particular.

Due to the high value of luxury cars and pleasure craft, these items are excellent for storing illegal cash and reintroducing it to the legitimate economy. It turns out that multiple sectors in British Columbia have been affected by money laundering activities. International crime gangs have been targeting Vancouver’s economy, flooding it with proceeds from drug sales and other criminal activity. According to Eby, this continued for many years and is probably happening right now. Whether authorities will be capable of breaking that cycle and clearing Canada’s reputation remains to be seen.

Prosecutors Oppose Ghislaine Maxwell's Last-Minute Bid To Delay Sentencing

 

The prosecutors in the case against Jeffrey Eppstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell on June 26 dismissed claims raised by the defendant’s attorneys, who told the judge that Maxwell was unable to access her legal documents because she had been placed on suicide watch.

 

In a June 25 letter to Judge Alison Nathan from Bobbi Sternheim, one of Ghislaine Maxwell’s defense attorneys, Sternheim informed the court that Maxwell was placed on suicide watch on June 24 by the Manhattan Detention Center (MDC), which in turn could cause a delay in Maxwell’s sentencing, scheduled for this Tuesday.

 

Sternheim went on to write, “She is not permitted to possess and review legal documents and is not permitted paper or pen. This has prevented her from preparing for sentencing.”

 

She states this was done “without having conducted a psychological evaluation and without justification.”

 

The attorney goes on to say, “Ms. Maxwell was abruptly removed from general population and returned to solitary confinement, this time without any clothing, toothpaste, soap, legal papers, etc. She was provided a ′suicide smock′ and is given a few sheets of toilet paper on request. This morning a psychologist evaluated Ms. Maxwell and determined she is not suicidal.”

 

The prosecution investigated the allegations and came to a different conclusion.

 

In a letter to Nathan dated June 26, the prosecution wrote, “This morning, the Government spoke directly with the Warden and the Chief Psychologists of the MDC. Based on that conversation, the Government understands that the defendant currently has access to all of her legal documents in hard copy and is able to confer with defense counsel. Accordingly, there is no basis to adjourn sentencing in this matter.”

 

The letter confirms Maxwell was indeed placed on suicide watch, after the Bureau of Prisons Inspector General’s Office (the IG) had received an email from Maxwell claiming to be in fear for her safety, specifically from members of the MDC staff.

 

However, it goes on to say, “Although the defendant has claimed to psychology staff that she is not suicidal, she has refused to answer psychology staff’s questions regarding the threat she reported to the IG.

 

“While she claimed to the IG to be in fear for her safety, she refused to tell the psychology staff what that fear is.”

 

The prosecution claims the warden and the chief psychologist have confirmed that Maxwell “will be able to prepare for sentencing unencumbered.”

Michael Sussmann, a former lawyer for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, is set to go on trial Monday for a single charge of lying to the FBI, as part of Special Counsel John Durham’s three-year investigation of the Trump-Russia investigation. 

 

But the trial is shaping up to be about something much bigger than whether Sussmann lied about his clients while passing on a tip to the FBI alleging suspicious ties between former President Donald Trump and Russia. 

 

Durham’s prosecution team, in court documents and pre-trial hearings, has pursued a strategy of casting Sussmann’s actions as part of a dirty smear campaign to use political opposition research to spur an FBI investigation and to use the resulting press coverage against Trump and his campaign. 

 

The former President has long claimed the FBI probe into his 2016 campaign was the “crime of the century,” and pointed the finger at Clinton and an assortment of “deep state” government officials for orchestrating it. Under Trump in 2019, then-Attorney General William Barr appointed Durham to examine what Barr characterized as an unfair investigation of Trump. 

 

During the 2020 campaign, Trump called Durham’s investigation “one of the most important investigations in the history of our country” and publicly pushed for an October surprise – prosecutions of his political enemies in time for the election.  

 

Durham hasn’t delivered on either.

 

The special counsel hasn’t alleged Clinton and her campaign broke any laws, and he hasn’t brought any conspiracy charges to tie Clinton and her campaign to Sussmann’s alleged crime.

 

But Sussmann’s trial will be the first opportunity for Durham’s team to litigate some of the hotly debated questions that have hung over US politics since soon after Trump descended an escalator in New York to declare his candidacy for president. 

 

Was the cloud of alleged Russia ties a legitimate subject for a national security investigation – as has been established by multiple government investigations – or a political hit job, as Trump has claimed?

 

Special Counsel Robert Mueller spent two years investigating and produced a report detailing the Trump campaign’s myriad ties to Russia. As part of the Mueller probe, multiple Trump associates were convicted of lying to the FBI and other more serious crimes, but Mueller never charged anyone with conspiring with the Russians.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov pointed out Thursday that Stingers and Javelin missiles, supplied by the West to Kiev, were already being sold at a discount on the black market and have surfaced in Albania and Kosovo.

It is worth noting that armed police and troops have been stationed at fuel stations in Sri Lanka.

 

In April, a motorist was shot dead by police in the central town of Rambukkana during a clash over the distribution of rationed petrol and diesel.

 

Over the weekend, police reported three separate incidents involving motorists. In one clash, at least six constables were injured, and seven motorists were arrested.

 

The government announced a two-week shutdown of state institutions and schools in an effort to reduce commuting and conserve the impoverished country's depleting fuel stocks.

 

In addition, the country is experiencing record-high inflation and lengthy power outages, all of which have contributed to months of protests.

 

It has also defaulted on its $51 billion foreign debt in April and is negotiating a bailout with the International Monetary Fund.

“This is a dangerous decision from a court hell bent on pushing a radical ideological agenda and infringing on the rights of states to protect our citizens from being gunned down in our streets, schools, and churches,” Newsom tweeted.

 

Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the majority opinion and was joined by the other five conservatives on the nine-member court, three of whom were nominated by former Republican president Donald Trump.

 

Thomas said the New York law prevents “law-abiding citizens with ordinary self-defense needs from exercising their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms in public for self-defense.”

 

“We conclude that the State’s licensing regime violates the Constitution,” Thomas said.

 

The ruling comes as the US Senate is considering a rare bipartisan bill that includes modest gun control measures.

 

Democratic Senator Dick Durbin said the ruling “makes it all the more important for Congress to take actionable steps to protect our kids and communities from this nation’s gun violence epidemic.

 

“In a nation of almost 400 million firearms, this Supreme Court decision is an invitation for more gun deaths and chaos in America’s neighborhoods,” he said.

 

On May 14, an 18-year-old used an AR-15-type assault rifle to kill 10 African Americans at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York.

 

Less than two weeks later 19 children and two teachers were shot and killed at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, by another teen with the same type of high-powered, semi-automatic rifle.

 

In the decision, Justice Samuel Alito dismissed arguments that guns outside of homes lead to great violence, including when it comes to mass shootings.

 

“Why, for example, does the dissent think it is relevant to recount the mass shootings that have occurred in recent years?,” he wrote.

The New York law said that to be given a permit to carry a firearm outside the home, a gun owner must clearly demonstrate that it is explicitly needed for self-defense.

 

Gun-rights advocates said that violated the Second Amendment of the Constitution, which says “the right of people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

 

The three liberal justices on the Supreme Court dissented from the ruling.

 

“Many states have tried to address some of the dangers of gun violence,” Justice Stephen Breyer said.

 

“The Court today severely burdens states’ efforts to do so.”

 

More than half of US states already allow permitless carry of firearms, most of them only doing so in the past decade.

 

The New York state law dated to 1913 and had stood based on the understanding that individual states had the right to regulate gun usage and ownership.

 

Over the past two decades more than 200 million guns have hit the US market, led by assault rifles and personal handguns, feeding a surge in murders, mass shootings and suicides.
